Galaxy M22 brings 90Hz refresh rate on a budget in another market

After launching in Germany a couple of weeks back, the Galaxy M22 is now available for purchase across the pond in Brazil. Samsung’s offering the phone with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in three color options: black, blue, and white.

The Galaxy M22 in Brazil costs R$1,499, or the rough equivalent of $275. The device costs less in other markets, but as usual, prices in Brazil are inflated by higher tax rates.

As to what the Galaxy M22 can offer for R$1,499, well, it features the MediaTek Helio G80 chipset and it’s powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 25W charging. However, prospective buyers should keep in mind that the phone ships with a 15W charger, and they’ll have to buy a 25W charger separately if they wish to maximize the battery’s capabilities.

90Hz display on a budget

The Galaxy M22 is equipped with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display featuring an HD+ resolution and a high refresh rate of 90Hz. Connectivity options include LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and a 3.5mm audio port.

Photography enthusiasts have four cameras to work with, including a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and 2MP depth and macro cameras. The device can record 1080p videos at 30fps. Meanwhile, the selfie camera embedded in the Infinity-U display cutout has a resolution of 13MP. The phone ships with Android 11 and takes advantage of Samsung Knox.

Samsung’s supposedly canceled Galaxy S21 FE was greenlit by the FCC

Samsung might never release the unannounced Galaxy S21 FE, but even if it won’t, we can be sure that pre-production models exist somewhere in Samsung’s labs. The phone was leaked plenty of times before, and Samsung seemed like it was getting ready to release the next FE-branded phone before the end of the year. That might never come to pass, but regardless, more documents found at the FCC (via @simransingh931) confirm that Samsung has at least developed the Galaxy S21 FE to the point where it was ready for the market.

The documents confirm that the Galaxy S21 FE (SM-G990E) — or at least the pre-production device — was manufactured at Samsung’s factory in Thain Nguyen. They also confirm that the smartphone was tested by the FCC between August 24-31. The FCC certificate was then issued a couple of days later, on September 2.

The papers further reveal that the Galaxy S21 FE is — or at least ‘was’ — planned to ship along with a 25W EP-TA800 travel adapter, a data cable, and a pair of earbuds. The international Galaxy S21 FE 5G was spotted at the FCC before, though this newer entry presumably has an Exynos SoC as opposed to one supplied by Qualcomm.

The FCC greenlit a Galaxy phone that might never see the light of day

Sadly for fans of the FE series, the future of the Galaxy S21 FE is more uncertain than ever. Samsung’s facing production issues due to the global semiconductor shortage, and while recent rumors indicated that the company may have solved the supply issues marring the Galaxy S21 FE, it might still be too late to bring this phone to the market. The Galaxy S22 series is getting close, and the Galaxy S21 is already available at a discount, which means there’s little room on the market for the Galaxy S21 FE. Meanwhile, the company recently started erasing bits of evidence of the Galaxy S21 FE’s existence from its websites.

Time will tell if Samsung will release the Galaxy S21 FE or not, but if it won’t, it means that the company has pulled the plug on the device at the last minute.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 gets new update with the October security patch included

Samsung started updating its foldable phones with the October 2021 security patch yesterday. The latest Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 were the first to receive the update, but it looks like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 wasn’t too far behind. And today, Samsung began rolling out a new firmware update — with the October 2021 security patch included — for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in South Korea.

The update is rolling out across multiple carrier variants, including LG U+, KT Corporation, and SK Telecom. Galaxy Z Fold 2 owners in South Korea can identify the new update by firmware version F916NKSU1DUI4, and as you may have noticed, the firmware number suggests that the update should include additional improvements aside from the October security update. The security patch has yet to be detailed by Samsung, but a changelog should appear by mid-October.

Likewise, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in other markets should join the version in South Korea soon. Customers will be greeted by a notification once the update is ready for download, and they can also check for new updates from the Software update menu inside the phone’s Settings app. As an alternative, SamMobile readers can download new updates from our firmware database for free and install them on their phones using a PC.

Galaxy S20, Note 20 series get a new firmware update and security patch

Samsung is now rolling out the October 2021 security patch to a handful of Galaxy devices released last year, namely the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 lineups. The company began deploying the new security patch a couple of days ago, and yesterday, Samsung released the update for its latest foldable phone models in South Korea.

Similarly, Samsung is now distributing the new firmware update for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 lineups in its homeland. And as always, the update will eventually reach more markets once the company determines that the first release can’t cause any unforeseen issues.

The new firmware update should improve more aspects beyond security

Judging by the firmware numbers accompanying these new updates, Samsung should be improving more than just the security level of the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series. We can’t confirm the new additions and changes for the time being, as the update is limited to Korea, but more details should emerge soon. Either way, the updates for the Galaxy S20 and Note 20 lineups can be identified by version numbers G98xNKSU1EUI3 and N98xNKSU1DUI2, respectively.

Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series customers in South Korea should now be greeted by an update notification. The same notification will eventually reach other markets. Users can also check if the update is available to download by opening the Settings app on their phones and navigating to Software update. And as usual, SamMobile readers have access to the latest firmware from our database, where they can download new Samsung updates for free and install them manually using a PC.

Galaxy S22 series cases lend even more credibility to the leaked designs

Third-party case makers have already received the necessary design details to begin manufacturing Galaxy S22 protective cases ahead of the series’ official launch. The first live photos of third-party Galaxy S22 protective cases have now emerged online, and they seem to confirm some of the design details revealed previously in renders.

Judging by these third-party case designs, the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will have the same type of camera housing design as the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+. At the same time, Galaxy S22 Ultra protective cases indicate that, indeed, the top-tier model will revert to an older design language based on a protruding camera housing that doesn’t wrap around the phone’s edges.

The Galaxy S22/S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra could look very different

Recent reports suggest that the Ultra model won’t be called the “Galaxy Note 22 Ultra” even if it will have a built-in S Pen slot. But regardless of its name, these early photos and renders lend more weight to the idea that the Ultra model won’t look anything like the standard Galaxy S22 and Plus variants.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra appears to be ticking a lot of boxes for Galaxy Note fans who were left out earlier this year. It has a boxier design and a dedicated S Pen slot, but on the other hand, Samsung doesn’t seem to be willing to use the same seamless camera housing design across the entire 2022 flagship series.

These Galaxy S22 Ultra cases don’t confirm whether the “P” shaped camera cutout will accommodate a single protruding camera element or two. But either way, it’s obvious from these photos that the camera bump won’t wrap around the edges, and that’s the one design element that’s setting the Galaxy S21 series apart from its rivals and even other Galaxy phones.

Of course, nothing is confirmed until it is, and in theory, things can change by the time Samsung hosts the next Galaxy Unpacked event. But realistically speaking, if case manufacturers have already started producing Galaxy S22 cases based on official specifications, then Samsung must’ve decided on the overall design.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 wishlist: How 2022’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 sequel can be better

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is great. We loved it when it came out, and we think it has held up excellently more than a month later. The Z Flip 3 is stylish, it’s got high-end hardware, and its price tag of $999 is crazy attractive. The Z Flip 3 is pretty much as mainstream as foldables can get right now, and it’s no wonder Samsung has been selling a lot of units around the world.

There’s plenty of room for improvement

That said, the phone is not perfect. There are many ways Samsung can make the package more compelling with next year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4. And in our latest video on SamMobile TV, we’ve put together a wishlist of improvements that we would like to see on the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s sequel.

Galaxy Tab Active 2 picks up the September 2021 security update

Over the past five weeks, Samsung has released the September 2021 security update to many Galaxy smartphones and tablets, including the Galaxy Tab S7 series. Now, the company has started releasing the security update to the Galaxy Tab Active 2.

The Galaxy Tab Active 2 is getting the new software update in Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. It comes with firmware version T395UBSCCUI5 and includes the September 2021 security patch. Samsung had mentioned earlier that this security patch fixes more than four dozen vulnerabilities related to user privacy and data security. General bug fixes and device stability improvements could also be a part of this new software.

If you are a Galaxy Tab Active 2 user in any of the countries mentioned above, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the new firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually using a Windows computer.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy Tab Active 2 four years ago with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board. It received the Android 8.0 update in 2018 and the Android 9 Pie update in 2019. We are surprised to see that such an old tablet is still getting monthly security updates.

Samsung’s game plan for the Galaxy S22 series is a bit surprising

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy S22 series early next year. If history is any indication, the company will launch the lineup in January 2022. Rumors suggest that next year’s lineup might deliver one of the most comprehensive changes to the Galaxy S series.

The company must have a game plan in mind about how it’s going to manage the three different models that will make up the Galaxy S22 series. The one being talked about now happens to be a bit surprising.

Samsung is betting big on the standard Galaxy S22 models

More than half of the shipments will be accounted for by the Galaxy S22 with the rest being made up by the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Up to 60% of all Galaxy S22 shipments will be of the 6.06-inch standard Galaxy S22. The 6.7-inch Galaxy S22+ will account for 20% of shipments while the 6.8-inch Galaxy S22 Ultra’s share will range between 20-30%.

Samsung might be expecting the cheapest model of its next flagship to perform better than its predecessors. The standard Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 models didn’t make up more than half of the entire shipments for the series.

The company did try to make the Galaxy S21 and S21+ more appealing to customers by adjusting their prices and specifications. It can’t significantly increase prices for these models due to intense competition in this segment.

The total planned production volume of the Galaxy S22 series is said to be in the low 20 million units. It’s a conservative estimate as shipments of Galaxy S flagships have generally been in the mid 30 million units range.

This might have something to do with the poor performance of the Galaxy S21 series. Its shipments are predicted to be in the mid 20 million units range. Analysts expect that the Galaxy S22 lineup might regain the series’ average shipments in excess of 30 million units.

What’s surprising to see is that Samsung isn’t expecting a significant surge in the demand for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. That’s despite the fact that this device will be a lifeline that Samsung throws to Galaxy Note fans.

It goes without saying that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will support the S Pen. However, it will go a step further than that. Leaked renders and multiple reports have revealed that it’s going to have a dedicated S Pen slot just like the Galaxy Note devices.

Users will no longer need to carry the S Pen separately. They would be able to store it inside the device just like they would have done on a Galaxy Note smartphone. While the dedicated silo might help absorb more Note fans into the Galaxy S series, it may not be enough to entice all of them.

The Galaxy A02 has finally started getting the Android 11 update. The new software is currently rolling out in Russia, but it could reach more markets over the next few weeks. The update also brings the September 2021 security patch that fixes more than 50 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities.

Samsung has released the new software update to the Galaxy A02 with firmware version A022GDXU2BUI3. It brings Android 11 along with One UI 3.1. It includes new features such as one-time permissions, chat bubbles, auto permissions reset, a slightly revamped UI, more lock screen widgets, improved stock apps, and a redesigned Device Care section.

Galaxy S22+ battery capacity downsize confirmed again

The Galaxy S22 series will no doubt bring a number of upgrades that are expected from every new yearly flagship, but at least one important feature will be sacrificed, at least on the Galaxy S22 and S22+.

The battery capacities on the two models are being downsized by 300 mAh, as revealed in recent weeks. The Galaxy S22 is going to have a 3,700 mAh battery and the Galaxy S22+ will have a 4,500 mAh battery, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra is set to sport the same 5,000 mAh battery as the S21 Ultra.

Earlier this week, we got confirmation that the base Galaxy S22 model will indeed have a smaller battery than its predecessor, and today, similar confirmation has arrived for the Galaxy S22+. The S22+ battery has been certified in Korea, and a live image of it shows the capacity figures quite clearly. The phone will have a 4,500 mAh typical battery capacity and a rated capacity of 4,390 mAh.

It will be interesting to see the kind of battery life the Galaxy S22 series phones will provide. The S22 and S22+ are said to feature smaller screens (6.1 inches and 6.55 inches), and if the new Snapdragon and Exynos chipsets are more efficient than this year’s chips, battery life may be similar to what we see on the Galaxy S21 and S21+.

But that’s something we will only find out once the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra go official and get into the hands of consumers and reviewers. That’s expected to happen sometime in early 2022, though there are whispers in the rumor mill that Samsung could push up the launch to December this year.

Galaxy S22 Ultra name change isn’t happening, according to latest rumor

Samsung could unveil the Galaxy S22 series in January 2022. Ahead of the launch, most of the specifications of the upcoming smartphones have been leaked. It was also rumored that Samsung could call the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s successor the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra because it features a built-in S Pen slot. However, a new rumor claims otherwise.

According to tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), Samsung’s next flagship smartphone will be called the Galaxy S22 Ultra and not the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra. Although the company is expected to bring back all the goodness of a Galaxy Note series smartphone with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, including the S Pen and the silo to store the stylus inside the phone, the company may not want to change its famous branding.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to feature a 6.8-inch Super AMOLED LTPO display with QHD+ resolution and a 120Hz variable refresh rate. It is expected to come equipped with the Exynos 2200 processor with an AMD RDNA2 GPU (Snapdragon 898 in some markets), 12GB RAM, and 256GB/512GB internal storage. It could continue to use a 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and two 10MP telephoto cameras.

The upcoming smartphone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, it is getting an upgrade in terms of charging speeds. It was recently revealed that it would be compatible with 45W fast charging. It will also feature GPS, Wi-Fi 6E, UWB, Bluetooth 5.x, NFC, USB Type-C port, stereo speakers, an IP rating, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

Samsung develops a 5G VoNR solution for smartphone brands, network carriers

Samsung has announced that it has developed a VoNR (Voice over New Radio) solution for 5G voice calls. The company said that its new solution can be used by all mobile phone brands and network carriers worldwide. With this new 5G VoNR solution, Samsung plans to offer a streamlined 5G SoC development and the deployment of VoNR services.

Usually, even when devices are connected to 5G networks, they drop to 4G signals during voice calls. However, with Samsung’s new solution, devices can stay on the 5G network for a truly next-generation experience and faster call connection times. Users can also stay on voice calls while playing online games or while streaming high-resolution videos.

The South Korean firm’s VoNR solution includes the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), Quality of Service (QoS), and a handover mechanism. IMS is the critical technology in VoNR, and it handles all multimedia tasks such as audio, video, and data services over a single IP network. Samsung’s IMS stack is designed for stable compatibility between 5G VoNR and 4G VoLTE services.

Samsung has also developed a QoS system that assists uninterrupted handover between nearby network base stations. It analyzes the flow of data in real-time and then prioritizes services for stable voice calls. The company is focused on localization and automation tests for 5G VoNR deployment with network carriers for improved reliability and performance.

Jonghan Kim, Vice President of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “With a surge in the number of 5G smartphone users, there is a higher demand for various 5G technologies and services. We will continue to deliver next-generation mobile communication technologies, including VoNR service support, that will bring users together, faster.

Galaxy smartphones with UWB can be used as digital car keys for Genesis GV60

Samsung had revealed earlier this year that it is working with automobile brands to allow consumers to unlock their cars using UWB-equipped Galaxy smartphones. It looks like the first integration of the Digital Car Key feature is going live with the Genesis GV60 electric car that was released this week.

The South Korean firm has announced that Galaxy smartphones equipped with both NFC and UWB can be used as digital car keys for the recently unveiled Genesis GV60. The feature will be available on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. With the Samsung Digital Key feature, users can lock and unlock their cars. They can also share their digital keys with their friends and family, and even set a time limit on how long the digital car key will be available to them.

Samsung said that users can also start the engine, open the trunk, and activate personalized settings like adjusting seats and mirror positions before getting in their Genesis GV60. These features will debut in South Korea and users would need to use the Samsung Pass app.

TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “We are proud to partner with Genesis as part of our mission to create exciting new mobile experiences that can make people’s everyday lives easier. As we continue to drive advancements in mobile technology like UWB, our priority is now to bring these new experiences to as many people as possible, in collaboration with our trusted ecosystem partners.

Why the Galaxy Watch 4 series launch is the greatest yet, at least in USA

Samsung got a lot of things right with the Galaxy Watch 4 series. Switching from Tizen to Wear OS appears to have worked in the series’ favor, and the new Exynos W920 chipset is better than the previous solution. The design was further improved, and speaking of which, one of my favorite things about the new Galaxy Watch 4 series is that it’s available in more design combinations than ever before.

The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are the only Samsung smartwatches that allow customers to choose a wrist strap design at checkout. Up until this series, Samsung smartwatch customers could pick a color for their wrist strap but couldn’t select a different style. This meant that Galaxy Watch 3 owners who didn’t like the default leather strap and wanted to pair the smartwatch with a silicone strap had to purchase one separately.

This year, Samsung is doing things a little differently by allowing Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic buyers to pick a wrist strap style and color before placing an online order. Thanks to this new philosophy, Samsung’s smartwatch series has never before been this customizable at launch, and the only issue is that the company isn’t treating every market the same.

Exclusive to Galaxy Watch 4 series customers in the USA

If you’ve purchased the Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and you’re about to yell at the screen that Samsung isn’t, in fact, allowing customers to pick a wrist strap style, that’s only because you probably bought the wearable outside the USA.

The option to pick a style isn’t available at Samsung’s online stores in every region. The service doesn’t even seem to be open in South Korea, where a dedicated Thom Browne Edition was recently launched. It is, however, available in the USA.

This could be a sign of things to come, as Samsung may eventually allow customers in other regions to customize their wrist strap options at checkout. For now, only customers in the USA have this privilege. Many Watch 4 enthusiasts may be looking across the pond with envy, but regardless, it’s a great initiative from Samsung, and hopefully, other markets will eventually get the same treatment.

If this is how the Galaxy S22 Ultra looks like, Samsung needs to wake up

The Galaxy S22 series is rumored to consist of at least three models, the best of which might have a dedicated S Pen slot and other Note-like design elements. Early renders depicting what could be the Galaxy S22 Ultra emerged a few days ago, and all the promising bits and pieces aside (such as the S Pen slot and uniform metallic frame), I think it’s safe to say that most of us hate the purported camera housing design.

On one hand, early unofficial Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ renders indicate that the two phones will refine the existing camera housing design that was introduced by the Galaxy S21 series.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will seemingly take a step back and revert to a less refined camera housing design that doesn’t wrap around the top-left corner of the phone. Instead, early leaks suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra camera housing looks like Samsung tacked it on to the back panel. It’s outdated, and it doesn’t make the Galaxy S or Note series justice.

Samsung had the right design formula already!

Samsung’s been toying around with various design languages over the years, but we felt like the company stumbled onto something great when it unveiled the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year. The new design language was refined and seemed more thought-out than any others before it.

Now, assuming that the recently leaked Galaxy S22 Ultra renders are even close to accurate, Samsung appears to have lost the confidence from its previous design decisions. Will Samsung ever be fully confident in this regard? We might never know, but if the company will indeed release the Galaxy S22 Ultra with a protruding, off-putting camera design, then someone will have to answer some questions because this indecisiveness we’re seeing every single year is becoming more than a nuisance.

Over the years, Samsung fans have only asked for a little bit of consistency from one generation of smartphones to the next, but sadly, Samsung doesn’t always seem to realize when it’s done something right and when it hasn’t. Case in point, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has one of the best camera housing designs in years (if not the best). But here we are, mere months away from the next Galaxy Unpacked event, worrying about Samsung possibly botching the design again.

Anyhow, feel free to let us know if you’re a fan of the Galaxy S21’s wrap-around camera housing design. Or perhaps you think that Samsung should indeed revert to an older camera housing design for the upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung gets Vanilla Ice to remix ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ for a new eco campaign

If you grew up in the ’80s or early ’90s, you already know that there are plenty of things in this world to remind you of your past teenage years and young adulthood. And if you get your kicks from walking down memory lane, Samsung’s latest campaign featuring Vanilla Ice might just teleport you all the way back to 1990.

Yes, you read that right. Vanilla Ice — the rapper — is back with a remix on the famous single “Ice, Ice Baby.” And in case you don’t know who Vanilla Ice is, don’t worry. It probably means that you aren’t in the target demographic for this campaign, as you might not be old enough to worry about your kitchen and/or BESPOKE refrigerator. But if you ask your parents, they’ll probably tell you all about Ice, Ice Baby and how hot the single was when it dropped a little over 30 years ago. (Dear Lord, has it been that long?!)

“Alright stop, long-term solution”

If you are a responsible adult who cares about the environment, then Samsung wants Vanilla Ice to tell you all about eco-friendliness. According to a recent study, if every household in Europe would decrease their freezer’s temperature by only 1 degree Celsius, it could lead to a decrease of over 1 million tons of CO2 emissions every year.

And yes, the campaign is launching primarily across Europe, where we suspect Vanilla Ice is more popular now than he is across the pond. You can check the remixed “Ice, Ice Baby” single below, though a word of warning: if you’re not a fan of Vanilla Ice or the famous single, this whole thing might backfire on you and could make you want to go out and pollute a lake.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 get October 2021 security update in Korea

The Galaxy S21 series was the first to receive the October 2021 security patch earlier this week, and now, Samsung is rolling out a similar firmware update for its new range of foldable flagships, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The new firmware update is rolling out for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in South Korea, but we suspect that Samsung’s new foldable phones in other markets will join the party soon.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 update carries firmware version F926NKSU1AUID, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 3 update can be identified by version F711NKSU2AUIE. The firmware numbers suggest that the update should include more than just the October 2021 security patch, and we’ll be able to confirm this — at the latest — once the update reaches the Galaxy Z3 series in Europe.

For now, the update appears to be rolling out across different networks in South Korea, including KT, SK Telecom, and LG U+. If you want to check for new updates, you can do so from the Settings app on your Samsung phone by accessing the Software update menu.

You can also download the latest update for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in South Korea from our firmware database and install it manually on your phone using a Windows PC.

Galaxy A33 in the works as sequel to the slow and laggy Galaxy A32

Chip shortages may be making things difficult for smartphone manufacturers, but Samsung isn’t letting anything get in the way of releasing as many new budget and mid-range phones as possible. For 2022, Samsung is working on making 5G more affordable with the Galaxy A13 5G, and it’s now been revealed that the company is also developing the Galaxy A33.

That’s pretty much it for what we currently know about the phone. There’s no information on its specs, release date, or pricing yet, though our friends over at GalaxyClub say that Samsung is well into the A33’s development, which means we could see some details surface over the coming weeks.

While it’s hard to speculate on specs at the moment, we hope the A33 will fix the biggest shortcoming of the Galaxy A32: weak performance. The Galaxy A32 suffers from a lot of stutter and lag that ruin what is otherwise a fairly good overall package, and Samsung would do well to make sure that isn’t the case with its sequel.

5G connectivity as standard instead of separate 5G and LTE models would also be nice to see. If Samsung intends on keeping them separate, then we hope the 5G model won’t offer faster network performance at the expense of other features, as many of Samsung’s 2021 mid-range 5G phones — including the Galaxy A32 5G — do.

Samsung might be fined €39 million for illegally inflating TV prices

If you purchased a Samsung TV in the Netherlands between 2013 and 2018, you might have paid extra because of Samsung’s influence on local retailers. The ACM (Authority for Consumers & Markets) recently led an investigation on Samsung and determined that the company used unfair practices to pressure shopkeepers to raise prices. The ACM gave Samsung Electronics a fine of more than €39 million following the investigation. But according to De Telegraaf, the Korean tech giant plans to respond with legal actions to challenge ACM’s decision.

The ACM started the investigation and discovered that Samsung was using prohibited commercial practices after some shopkeepers complained. It turns out that Samsung Electronics was getting in touch with sellers in the Netherlands via email and WhatsApp to control prices regularly. If a retailer was selling a Samsung TV for lower than the company wanted, Samsung messaged the seller and explained that the price had to be increased.

Samsung claims to have followed all the rules, will fight ACM’s decision

The ACM investigated WhatsApp and email traffic between Samsung and shopkeepers and determined that “Samsung’s behavior distorted competition at the retail level and led to higher prices for consumers.” Samsung would constantly monitor its online TV range and pressure e-tailers to adjust their prices to match the Korean tech giant’s expectations, and therefore, Samsung was able to protect its margins and those of its partner retailers at the cost of the consumer.

But a few shopkeepers that were contacted by Samsung came forward. And with their help, the ACM discovered that Samsung coordinated sales prices in the Netherlands in an unfair manner towards the consumer.

On the other hand, a Samsung spokesperson said that the company has complied with competition rules and is disappointed with the ACM’s decision. Samsung will reportedly take legal steps to challenge the €39 million fine.

Beyond issuing this fine, the ACM lacks the authority to enforce Samsung to compensate customers who bought a TV between 2013 and 2018 and might feel like they got wronged. Time will tell how the story unfolds, but perhaps a law firm will prepare a class action lawsuit to represent the consumers.
