Unlocked Galaxy J3 (2016) compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T available on Amazon

Customers in the United States can purchase the Galaxy J3 (2016) through Sprint as well as prepaid carriers Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. Since all three are CDMA carriers the handset can’t be used on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile. Those who would like to use the Galaxy J3 (2016) on GSM networks can now purchase the handset from Amazon. It’s selling the unlocked version that’s compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile. Do keep in mind that AT&T is going to launch the Galaxy J3 (2016) on its network in May.

Amazon is selling the Galaxy J3 (2016) for $189.99, slightly cheaper than the $192 that Sprint is asking for it on its network. It works on AT&T and T-Mobile, and can be purchased in black, white and gold colors. Only the black and white are dual SIM. For $189.99 customers are getting a smartphone that has a 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 410 processor with 1.5GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage with microSD card support, 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, 2,600mAh battery and Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Samsung looks to sell coated NAND flash memory to Apple

Samsung is already part of Apple’s supply chain but it appears that the company wants to do more business with its rival. According to a new report Samsung wants to sell Apple coated NAND flash memory that’s protected against electromagnetic interference or EMI. Samsung is said to be working with a company called Protec to coat NAND flash memory modules so that Apple’s EMI shielding standards are met.

Electromagnetic interference is a big problem because space inside smartphones is shrinking as they’re getting thinner with each generation. This means that some components inside the phone are placed on top of each other and this can cause EMI. To mitigate this problem Apple is demanding that its suppliers use enough coating to prevent any EMI issues during the life of the device. The report says that Samsung will have the coated NAND modules available in quantity by early next year. Apple’s current flash memory supplier SK Hynix is also reportedly working on coated NAND modules so when the time comes for Apple to pick a supplier it might come down to whoever offers the best quality for the best price.

Galaxy S7 edge Olixar Rugged and Olixar Shield case review

We have been taking a few Galaxy S7 edge cases for a spin, and the latest cases we tested are the Olixar Shield and Olixar Rugged. Both are full-fledged cases that nicely wrap around Samsung’s edgy beauty and are stronger than the cases we have reviewed up until now. How do they work in real life? Well, let’s not waste any time and go straight to the review.

Olixar Rugged

There are regular cases, and then there are those that add considerable heft to your phone. The rugged case from Olixar is one such case. Compared to the Evutec and Spigen cases that we reviewed earlier, this one is rather hard to get the S7 edge into – you will be fiddling a bit with either the top or bottom depending on how you put your phone inside. Thankfully, getting the phone back out isn’t too hard. Once you have managed to put the case on, it covers the phone pretty well from every side.

olixar

You get big and thick silver-colored volume and power buttons that respond pretty well when you press them, though they do look a tad ugly at times and are somewhat loose. The back of the case is soft rubber that feels nice in the hand. In terms of grip, it can prove to be a bit slippery. But then again, it’s better than the back of the phone itself, which can be extremely soft and slippery at times.

olixar-case-review-5 olixar-case-review-4

The slots for the ports and sensors are huge, and as a result putting in or removing a USB or headphone cable is quick and easy. When it comes to getting your phone out of the pocket, the case offers no resistance and comes out without any struggle. Overall, the Olixar rugged case offers great protection and feels nice in the hand. The volume and power buttons are the only points of contention here, as they look rather cheap compared to the rest of the case.

Olixar Shield

The Olixar Shield case is a slightly thinner version of the rugged case from the company, with a polycarbonate backside. Small rubber pads jut out of holes at either side on the back, making for a funky look that you may or may not like. The polycarbonate material gives you a good grip, and slipping the case on and off the phone doesn’t pose a problem. You get a satisfying click when you put the phone inside the case, and it fits in rather well.

olixar-case-review-7 olixar-case-review-8

Both the Shield and Rugged cases from Olixar cover a major portion of the front and sides of the device, with easy access to the microUSB and headphone ports. Where they differ is the tactility of the volume and power buttons. The buttons are colored the same as the case itself on the Shield – they look good, but getting them to work can require a bit of pressure. That’s never a good thing, and it’s where the rugged case proves to be better despite having less visually appealing buttons.

SAMSUNG CSC

Overall, the Rugged and Shield cases from Olixar are nice if you want high-end protection for your Galaxy S7 edge. Some ugly buttons and the somewhat slippery nature of the Rugged case aside, the $15.49 price tag for both cases makes them good options. There are even better cases out there though, and we shall be testing them out in the coming days.

Head over to the links below to buy the Olixar Rugged or Olixar Shield cases from Mobile Fun.

WhatsApp for Tizen gets voice calling support on the Samsung Z3

The native WhatsApp app for Tizen has been updated today with support for a very important feature: voice calling. WhatsApp has flipped the switch for this feature on the Tizen-powered Samsung Z3 smartphone and this update will soon arrive for the Samsung Z1 as well. Users need to be on software version Z300HODD0BPD4 to use the voice call feature; this maintenance release is going to be released soon for the Samsung Z1.

WhatsApp voice calling arrived on the Samsung Z1 last year not too long after the company brought this feature to its iOS and Android apps. Since Tizen initially had an emulated version of the WhatsApp Android app users on this platform immediately got the features that WhatsApp added to its Android app. The official app is more stable on this platform and better suited to it, and now it has received one big feature that’s already available on other platforms.

Gear S2 Band Adapter goes official comes in two colors

The Gear S2 Band Adapter leaked in photos late last month and went live on a German retail site just last week, so it was only a matter of time before Samsung made it official.

Well, the day has come, as the company has officially announced the release of the Gear S2 Band Adapter for the worldwide market. The Band Adapter for the Gear S2 comes in two colors, dark gray and silver, and lets you pair any 20mm wristband on the market with the device itself. Now, you need only remove the original Gear S2 band, attach the adapter, and then lock in your favorite wristband to achieve the style you want. Samsung says that even the Gear S2 Classic wristband will now work with the original Gear S2.

Samsung has been on a roll lately, with the Korean giant committed to the idea of merging tech and fashion. Just last month, Samsung partnered with de GRISOGONO to produce a 100-diamond, gold-sculpted version of Samsung’s first circular smartwatch worth $15,000. The company’s Gear S2 Classic Platinum and Rose Gold variants, announced at CES earlier this year, are now available in India. With great design in the Gear S2 and all its variants, options for Ceramic bracelets and those of any material (including leather and metal), and four times as many apps as the wrist wearable had at launch just seven months ago, the Gear S2 is getting the kind of attention that Samsung only dreamed of back at the launch of the Galaxy Gear in 2013.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) arrive in Europe

Not long ago we confirmed the Galaxy J5 (2016) will be released in several European countries. That device has now surfaced on Samsung’s website in France. Furthermore, Samsung Spain takes away all questions regarding a European release for the larger Galaxy J7 (2016), as it has posted the official product page on its website.

A few weeks ago, Samsung launched both new J-series devices in China, but we figured it would be a while before either of those make its way to other markets. Still, it quickly became clear the Galaxy J5 (2016) will eventually make it to Europe, and with Samsung France listing the first support pages for that phone, all doubt is officially removed.

Somewhat less anticipated, is the full-blown introduction of the Galaxy J7 (2016) in Spain, where Samsung’s local branch is listing the device in full 5.5-inch, metal-framed glory, revealing a €299 price tag. Like the Galaxy J5 (2016), the J7 (2016) runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box.

samsung-galaxy-j7-2016-europa-nederland

The Galaxy J5 (2016) comes with a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1280 x 720 resolution, where the J7 (2016) packs the same pixels in a slightly larger 5.5-inch screen. Curiously, the Chinese J7 (2016) has a display with a 1080p Full HD resolution. The latter also comes with 3GB of RAM, while the European version seems content with 2GB of RAM.

Processor-wise, the Galaxy J5 (2016) comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410, while the new J7 packs more punch thanks to its Exynos 7870 or Snapdragon 617 soc. Both phones have a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter with dedicated LED flash. Power is provided by removable batteries offering 3,100 and 3,300 mAh capacities respectively.

With the appearance of both new Galaxy J devices on European Samsung sites, it is of course not confirmed both phones will be available in all European markets. Still, we would not be surprised to see both phones released widely, as they do present attractive lower mid-range options for Europeans looking for affordable smartphones with a great display, solid battery life, and part-metal design.

Samsung Pay partners with the largest POS providers to speed up adoption rate of mobile payments

Samsung has announced that its teamed up with the world’s largest point-of-sale (POS) manufacturers to improve the user experience and adoption rate of its mobile payment platform, Samsung Pay. This partnership should, in theory, result in more customers turning to the contactless payment service to purchase goods on a daily basis as it should be both smoother and quicker than inserting a card into a reader and entering a PIN.

The South Korean company also made it extremely clear that it hopes working with the POS vendors will enable Samsung Pay to be accepted in all bricks-and-mortar stores that process credit/debit card payments. It’s predicted that only once it’s welcomed in the majority of retailers will consumers start to use the service as their main wallet as there will be virtually no reason for them to carry a physical card.

Samsung vows to use technology to revolutionize the global fashion industry

The head of Samsung’s fashion unit has said that the company is going to use technology to revolutionize the global fashion industry and take the lead in this market. These comments were made at the second annual Conde Nast International Luxury Conference in South Korea by Lee Seo-hyun, the president and CEO of Samsung C&T’s fashion division. “Technology can never surpass human creativity, but there is greater potential when the two are combined. And I’m confident that Samsung is up to the task,” she said.

The speech was Lee’s first formal appearance on the global fashion stage six months after she was made the head of Samsung’s fashion arm which happens to be the largest apparel group in South Korea. The youngest daughter of Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee, Lee is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design. She noted in her speech that technology has a rising impact in every sector and that the fashion industry has to embrace these changes quickly, adding that “if the industry acts quickly and embraces technology, I think that future luxury will be limitless. The possibilities are limitless. And that is a future we can all look forward to.” Lee sees Samsung Fashion being expanded overseas in the next five to ten years.

Galaxy S5 survives the outdoors for seven months

The Galaxy S5 was Samsung’s first flagship to feature IP67 dust and water resistance, the handset was capable of taking on the elements as it was completely protected against dust and against up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. What if the Galaxy S5 was exposed to the elements for far longer, say seven months? Well as it turns out the Galaxy S5 is more than capable of surviving the outdoors for several months.

A South Korean man named Bae Gyu-ryong lost his Galaxy S5 in his persimmon orchard last year. He kept searching for it but didn’t find it as the device was on silent mode and he presumably did not have Android Device Manager on the phone. Earlier this month Gyu-ryong discovered his lost Galaxy S5 by chance as he was working in his orchard. The handset had been exposed to the elements for over seven months, including the winter months. His Galaxy S5 was wet when we found it but after it was cleaned and dried the phone worked like it didn’t spend the last seven months in an orchard. As they say, all’s well that ends well!
