Galaxy S9 launch confirmed for MWC 2018

It was rumored last year that Samsung might launch the Galaxy S9 earlier than its predecessor with some even suggesting that a CES 2018 unveil was possible. That obviously hasn’t happened but there have been multiple reports about the possibility of the Galaxy S9 being launched at MWC 2018.

Samsung has now confirmed that it’s going to launch its first flagship smartphone of the year at the Mobile World Congress 2018 which takes place in Barcelona next month.

Galaxy S9 launch

The Mobile World Congress 2018 kicks off on February 26. The Galaxy S9 is still going to be launched a month earlier than its predecessor. The Galaxy S8 was unveiled at a special event at the end of March 2017.

During a press conference earlier today in Las Vegas, the president of Samsung’s mobile business DJ Koh confirmed that the Galaxy S9 launch is going to take place next month at MWC 2018, reports ZDNet. He also confirmed that the release date will be announced at the event.

Samsung not confirmed anything else about the handset so it’ll keep us waiting until February. Since it’s being launched a month before the Galaxy S8, it’s also going to hit the market earlier. We can expect it to be released by mid-March at least in some key markets across the globe.

Amazon India makes the Galaxy On7 Prime official

As reported recently, the Galaxy On7 Prime is launching in India as an Amazon-exclusive. Amazon India has started marketing the Galaxy On7 Prime on their website with a dedicated page. The webpage lists all the major features of the upcoming phone.

The Galaxy On7 Prime will be powered by an Exynos 7870 Octa-Core processor clocked at 1.6Ghz and will come in two configurations: 3GB RAM/32GB internal storage and 4GB RAM/64GB internal storage. It also supports MicroSD cards up to 256GB if the internal storage falls short in handling your multimedia needs.

Galaxy On7 Prime launching soon in India

The device flaunts a 5.5” Full-HD display and comes in an 8mm metal unibody. Both the front and back cameras are 13-megapixel and boast F1.9 aperture for better low-light performance.

The Galaxy On7 Prime in India will also come preloaded with Samsung Pay Mini. Samsung Pay Mini lacks MST and NFC-based payment options. It uses UPI (Unified Payments Interface) and mobile wallets like PayTm for making payments. Without MST and NFC-based payments, Samsung Pay Mini is just a glorified mobile wallet which stores other wallets.

There is no information on pricing and availability currently. But since Amazon India is already marketing the phone, it should be available for purchase very soon.

The Galaxy On7 Prime to be launched in India is different from the one currently available in UAE. The Indian variant has a 13-megapixel camera on the front while the Galaxy One7 Prime available in UAE has an 8-megapixel front camera.

The Indian variant also comes with Samsung Pay Mini which the UAE version seems to lack. By launching different phones under the same name, Samsung continues to further complicate their already confusing smartphone line-up.

New Galaxy A8 (2018) commercial highlights its dual camera

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) late last month. The new premium mid-range handsets are now gradually being made available in markets across the globe. Samsung started taking pre-orders in South Korea last week with sales starting from January 5.

The company is airing a new commercial for the Galaxy A8 (2018) in its home country that highlights the handsets’ dual camera. These are first devices from Samsung to feature a dual camera system on the front.

Galaxy A8 (2018) commercial

It makes sense for Samsung to highlight this feature in the marketing materials for the Galaxy A8 (2018). The dual front-facing camera is without a doubt one of the biggest selling features of the Galaxy A8 (2018).

The handset is equipped with a 16-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual camera system on the front with Live Focus. The handset also features a gorgeous Infinity Display, support for the Gear VR headset, and more powerful internals.

Samsung also highlighted the dual front-facing camera in a recent feel-good video that it posted online. That video also shed light on some of the other features of this handset such as water resistance.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) is now available for purchase in South Korea and in the Netherlands as well. It’s only a matter of time before it’s released elsewhere.

Samsung’s Q4 2017 earnings guidance predicts record profits

2017 was a great year for Samsung. The company’s revenues have surged on the back of the stellar performance of its semiconductor division leading it to post record profits in the past two quarters. It became the world’s most profitable tech company earlier this year. Samsung expects to post a record operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2017 as well. It’s on track for a full year record operating profit.

Samsung Q4 2017 earnings guidance

The company estimates consolidated revenue of 66 trillion won or just over $61 billion in Q4 2017 with a record operating profit of 15.1 trillion won or $14.13 billion.

While impressive in its own right, Samsung’s earnings guidance is below market estimates of 16 trillion won or $15 billion in operating profit for the previous quarter. Nevertheless, the guidance represents an increase of 64 percent in operating profit compared to the same period last year.

Samsung estimates full-year 2017 consolidated revenue of 239.60 trillion won or $223 billion and a consolidated operating profit of approximately 53.60 trillion won or $45.9 billion. It goes to show that 2017 has really been a record year for the company.

The question is whether or not it will be able to maintain this momentum as its semiconductor is expected to come under pressure in the future due to changes in the market conditions.

Samsung’s foldable phone could go into mass production in November

Samsung’s foldable smartphone may finally be close to becoming a commercial project, according to a new report by ETNews. Citing industry sources, the report says the Korean giant plans to come up with the foldable display’s final design in March, mass produce panels in September, and ultimately start mass production of the foldable smartphone in November. An official announcement of the device will reportedly come in December or early 2019. Yes, that’s not what one would classify as “coming soon”, but considering Samsung’s foldable phone has been in development for many years, a dozen more months wouldn’t seem all that long.

Samsung’s foldable phone might have a 7.3-inch display

According to ETNews, the foldable OLED display will measure 7.3 inches, with the device folding inwards to act as a phone and vice versa when required to perform tablet duties. Samsung Display is reportedly focusing on making a display folds in and out smoothly without showing any creases, and based on the erroneous translation of the report from Google, the company will be showing off the foldable display to “major customers” behind closed doors at the ongoing CES event in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, that’s what such reports always say, and even if the foldable display is on, well, display at CES, there’s no way to be sure that is actually the case.

And, of course, there’s no guarantee that the foldable phone will make an appearance by the end of this year. There have been so many rumors of “bendable” and “foldable” phones being ready for prime time in the last couple of years that it’s foolish to put stock on reports until we see something more substantial than “information from industry sources.” Yes, Samsung itself has said that it’s aiming to unveil its first foldable phone in 2018, but foldable smartphones aren’t going to be easy to mass produce, so it’s best to keep a lid on our hopes of seeing one in the flesh anytime soon.
