Dubious images of the Gear S3 leaked

The Gear S2 smartwatch was very well received and now we’re looking forward to seeing what the company has in store for us next. There have been a few rumors and leaks about the Gear S3 but the latest seems rather dubious. A couple of images have leaked online claiming to offer us our first glimpse of the Gear S3 smartwatch.

The images show a smartwatch fashioned out of metal and in my view it looks a bit too similar to the 36mm Rolex Datejust 2. It appears to have the same fluted bezel and oyster bracelet that are iconic to the Rolex and I don’t think Samsung will come out with a device that looks so similar to the real deal and not expect the Swiss watchmaker’s lawyers to come down on it hard. It looks like we may have to wait a while before we get to see some images of the Gear S3 that have some aura of legitimacy to them.

We exclusively reported a couple of days ago that Samsung’s next smartwatch is codenamed Solis and that it runs Tizen. It’s the successor to the Gear S2 and is very likely going to have a circular display. While many would appreciate having a larger display on the Gear S3 there’s no evidence as yet to show that Samsung will move away from the 1.2-inch display size of the Gear S2. Samsung may unveil the Gear S3 smartwatch later this year in the fall.

Samsung Gear 360 vs. LG 360 camera quality compared side by side

Samsung’s first consumer grade 360-degree camera, the Gear 360, was unveiled along with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. However, Samsung isn’t the only brand to release a 360-degree camera. LG released its 360-degree camera which works with the Android and iOS smartphones.

Both, the Gear 360 and the LG 360 Cam, are very similar cameras, and it was natural to wonder which is better. Now, a video has been posted on YouTube, which compares the video and audio quality of both these 360-degree cameras. As you can see in the video, the Gear 360 has much better video quality than the LG 360 Cam.

The Gear 360 shoots videos in close to 4K resolution, while the LG 360 Cam captures them in 2K resolution, hence the difference in image quality. What are your thoughts about this?

Note: You should watch this video on your smartphone or tablet, preferably with a VR headset for a better experience.

Samsung spending $6.8 billion to boost OLED display production ahead of iPhone release

There have been plenty of reports in the past stating that Samsung bagged a major order from Apple to supply OLED displays for the iPhone that will be released next year. Now, it is being reported that Samsung is planning to spend a considerable amount of capital to boost production capacity of OLED panels ahead of the iPhone release next year.

According to a report from Nikkei, Samsung plans to spend around KRW 8 trillion (or $6.8 billion) to boost its smartphone OLED panel production capacity by over 50% or 200 million panels per year, and the company can already ship 300 million panels each year. Reports state that Samsung will supply 100 million 5.5-inch OLED panels to Apple starting next year.

Apart from Samsung, LG Display and JDI are said to be minor OLED supplier for the upcoming iPhone next year. The South Korean electronics giant aims to grow its components business as its earnings are on par with those from smartphones. Samsung was accounted for 95 percent of all OLED shipments during Q1 2016.

More smartphone manufacturers, including the Chinese, are turning towards AMOLED displays as they provide much better image quality and the cost associated with AMOLED panels has reduced drastically in the past one year.
