Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance

The upcoming Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) have been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. This news comes less than a week after both of the handsets made a pitstop at the Federal Communication Commission in the United States—so it’s likely they will hit the shelves in the region in the not-too-distant future.

Related: Galaxy A5 (2018) makes an appearance at the FCC

Recent leaks and rumors point towards both the Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) shipping with an Infinity Display, an in-house Exynos 7785 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. They should also both ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat skinned with Samsung’s Experience user interface.

Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018)?

It’s possible, however, that the Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) will come with different vanity monikers when they’re released. As we detailed in a (speculative) post we published this week, Samsung may be unifying its model names—and if that’s true, we could be looking at the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018).

Galaxy C7 is being updated to Android 7.0 Nougat in China

The Android Nougat update has been hitting a slew of mid-range and budget Samsung smartphones recently, more than two months after Android 8.0 Oreo made its public debut, and the update has begun making its way to the Galaxy C7 this week. The update comes as a 1141 MB download over the air and bumps the phone’s build number up to C7000ZCU2BQJ6.

Unfortunately, it looks like Samsung isn’t offering the latest version of Android Nougat and its Samsung Experience UX. The C7 is getting Android 7.0 and, therefore, Samsung Experience 8.1, which debuted on the Galaxy S8 and is now running two versions behind if we count the Oreo beta that has been available for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. This wouldn’t be such a big deal if the more affordable Galaxy J lineup of phones wasn’t getting newer software compared to the C7, although we’re guessing this is based purely on sales figures (the C series is too limited in availability and doesn’t hold a candle compared to the popularity of the Galaxy J handsets).

In any case, Nougat is now available for the Galaxy C7 in China and is reportedly in the works for the C7 Pro as well. There’s no guarantee the C7 will get the Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade, but given the stiff competition Samsung is facing in the Chinese market, it would be in the interest of the company to keep consumers happy with more than just one major update.

Marriott teams up with Samsung to showcase the ‘hotel room of the future’

Marriott International, the world’s largest lodging firm, has teamed up with Legrand and Samsung to showcase what the “hotel room of the future” could look like—and truth be told, it’s making us want to sell up and move into the suite (until our money inevitably runs out).

The IoT Guestroom Lab—located in Marriott’s Innovation Lab at its corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland—is decked out with a number of Samsung’s IoT appliances, including an air conditioning unit and plug socket adapters, which are both controlled using a Smart TV.

“At Samsung, we aspire to make life easier and better for our consumers, whether they’re at home or their home away from home,” said James Stansberry, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ARTIK Internet-of-Things (IoT), Samsung Electronics North America.

The firm elaborated on its collaboration with Marriott in a blog post:

The IoT Guestroom Lab incorporates multiple responsive IoT systems, devices and applications that communicate with one another to serve guests and optimize hotel operations. Customizable, intelligent experiences mean that guests on vacation can enjoy the ultimate relaxation environment, while business travelers can achieve heightened productivity based on their personal preferences.

Underlying the smart hotel room’s capabilities are end-to-end IoT services powered by the Samsung ARTIK platform and the Samsung SmartThings Cloud. From intuitive lighting to voice-activated room controls, the ARTIK platform is enabling a future where hotel guests enjoy an elevated guest experience in rooms designed and constructed with greater efficiency.

Samsung Pay has been updated with support for Banco Bradesco, one of the largest financial institutions in Brazil, bringing it in line with competitors Banco do Brasil, Banco Inter, Banrisul, Caixa Econômica Federal, Porto Seguro, Santander and Neon.

We should point out, however, that even though Samsung released the upgrade on Thursday, it can take up to a week to reach your handset—but as soon as it does, you’ll be able to start making contactless payments in brick-and-mortar and online stores.

“The partnership with Bradesco reinforces our constant search to increase possibilities within Samsung Pay,” said Antonio Quintas, VP of Mobile, Samsung Brazil. “Our intention is [to provide] more and more consumers with [the benefits of the platform.]”

Is Samsung Pay compatible with my smartphone?

Samsung Pay is available on a whole host of smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6, though support varies region by region. To see if it’s compatible with your handset in Brazil, head over to Samsung’s website.

Samsung promotes 99 executives in chip-making unit

Samsung has promoted a total of 221 executives—118 vice presidents, 60 senior vice presidents, 27 executive vice presidents, 15 masters and one fellow—with 99 of them coming from its lucrative chip business, revealed The Korea Herald on Thursday, November 16.

“The promotion of 99 executives reaffirmed the firm’s personnel principles thoroughly based on performance,” said a Samsung spokesperson. “Within the chip unit, more than 50% of promotions came from the research area that was the base for the latest record earnings.”

Related: Samsung posts record profits in Q3 2017

In the July to September period, Samsung recorded a total operating profit of 14.5 trillion won ($13 billion), with 70 percent coming solely from its chip-manufacturing division—so it’s only fitting that those responsible for the firm’s success deserve a promotion.

Samsung promoted seven female and nine foreign executives

The Korea Herald also reported that Samsung promoted seven female and nine foreign executives, including senior vice presidents James Elliott, Dermot Ryan, Hadrian Baumann and Dipesh Shah, all of whom led their divisions to achieve record sales figures in the quarter.

Samsung crushing memory chip rivals with massive spending

Samsung’s components business has proven to be a veritable cash cow for the conglomerate. The company already accounts for almost half of the global DRAM market. This is a position that it certainly wants to hold on to. As smaller rivals position themselves to take on Samsung, the company wants to effectively crush them with a massive surge in spending.

According to market analyst IC Insights, Samsung’s plan to maintain its dominance in this key market has involved doubling its capital expenditure in the semiconductor division for this year.

Show me the money

Samsung’s capital expenditures for the semiconductor division clocked in at $11.3 billion last year. It more than doubled the capital expenditure for the division to an unprecedented $26 billion this year.

$14 billion of that has been allocated to a significant capacity increase at Samsung’s Pyeongtaek fab. Samsung allocated $7 billion for process migration and further capacity increase. It also spent $5 billion to ramp up the 10nm process capacity.

The $8.6 billion that Samsung has spent on semiconductors in Q4 2017 this year accounts for 33 percent of the $26.2 billion capex that the industry as a whole spent during this period.

The surge in spending will enable the semiconductor division to further expand its development and production capabilities. It’s a preemptive measure by the company against the rise of potential competitors from China.

China buys almost a fifth of the global DRAM supply. It has funded the creation of domestic memory producers to reduce imports and establish Chinese presence in the semiconductor industry.

Samsung’s massive surge in spending is going to make that difficult for the Chinese rivals. It’s virtually impossible for them to compete at the same level unless they establish a joint venture with an existing large memory supplier.

Analysts believe that this surge in spending can cause problems in the future. It may lead to a supply glut in the 3D NAND flash market as major rivals SK Hynix, Toshiba, Intel and Micron have also increased spending.

Leaked images of SM-W2018 vs SM-W2017 exhibit finesse

We exclusively reported last year that Samsung was working on a new high-end flip phone for China. The SM-W2017 was then unveiled by the company in November. We’ve seen a lot of leaked images of the handset’s successor recently. The apparent changes suggest that the flagship flip phone has gone through a process of refinement.

Leaked images of SM-W2018 vs SM-W2017

The leaked images of the SM-W2018 that we’ve seen so far show some great design improvements. Gone are the rounded corners of its predecessor. This gives the handset a more solid feel. Samsung seems to be shooting for an industrial look and feel with this handsets. The accouterments certainly betray that as there’s lots of polished metal and a glass back.

It’s because of this glass back that the gold color of this new handset is more muted than its predecessor. Samsung has achieved a nice contrast between the black and the gold. The back also houses the fingerprint sensor alongside the rear camera.

The sensor’s position has been changed from beneath the camera lens to right alongside it. That’s how it is on recent flagships like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

A final judgment on the feel of this device can only be passed once there’s some hands-on time with it. The initial impressions are very good, though.

As far as the specs go, the SM-W2018 is expected to feature two 4.2-inch Full HD displays. It’s going to be powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. A 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera will be onboard as well with a 2,300mAh battery.

Since its predecessor was launched in November last year, it’s likely that Samsung might officially launch the SM-W2018 soon. It’s expected to cost $2,000 in China.

Bixby Voice Chinese support goes live on November 30

Samsung initially had to delay Bixby’s launch in China following revisions to local cybersecurity laws. The company expanded Bixby Voice to more than 200 countries across the globe in August this year, China included. The assistant only supports English and Korean languages right now. Samsung has been working on adding support for the Chinese language.

With the beta that it launched a couple of weeks ago wrapping up, Samsung has now confirmed that Bixby Voice Chinese support will be launched on November 30.

Bixby Voice Chinese support

Samsung China added support for the Chinese language to Bixby in beta a couple of weeks back. The beta participants were encouraged to use the Bixby Voice feature frequently so that the assistant can get a better understanding of the language.

It wasn’t surprising to see that many Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 owners in China were waiting for Bixby to support their language. Bixby Voice is currently supported on three handsets – the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and the Galaxy Note 8. The day Samsung announced this beta all 15,000 spots were filled up very quickly.

Samsung China previously confirmed that this beta test would conclude on November 29. It has now revealed that the Bixby Voice Chinese support will go live on November 30.

Galaxy S7 November security patch rolling out now

Samsung has now started rolling out the Galaxy S7 November security patch. The firmware update is being rolled out for the unbranded Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the Netherlands. These are the first handsets in the country to receive the November security patch from Samsung.

The update weighs in at just under 20MB. That’s not surprising, given that this firmware update doesn’t bring anything else than the latest security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Galaxy S7 November security patch

The security patch for the month of November 2017 was detailed by Samsung last week. It brings the fix for a major Wi-Fi security flaw. The Krack Wi-Fi vulnerability has been fixed with this update.

This vulnerability can enable hackers to eavesdrop on traffic between wireless access points and connected devices. The patch also includes fixes for 61 vulnerabilities found in the Android OS. Patches for six vulnerabilities in Samsung’s software are included as well.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware update G930FXXS1DQK1 and G935FXXS1DQK1 for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the Netherlands respectively. The update is being rolled out over-the-air.

The November 2017 security patch will soon be released for the carrier-branded versions of the handsets soon as well.

Samsung revamping its strategy to target Xiaomi in India

The latest market data published by IDC reveals that Xiaomi has made it to the top of the Indian smartphone market. The company is tied with Samsung with 23.5 percent share of the Indian smartphone market. This is troubling for Samsung as it has long been the dominant player in the country. It may only be a matter of time before Xiaomi overtakes Samsung in India.

According to a new report, Samsung is now revamping its strategy to particularly target Xiaomi in India. The company will launch new affordable models and even increase incentives for retailers to claw back market share from its main Chinese rival.

Samsung vs Xiaomi

Our Editor-in-Chief noted in his opinion yesterday that Xiaomi has primarily been successful in the Indian market for its value-for-money budget smartphones. Xiaomi continues to offer handsets with specs that Samsung’s 3x expensive Galaxy devices can’t best.

Since the bulk of the sales in the Indian market are concentrated in the affordable segment, Xiaomi has quickly caught up with Samsung. What’s more impressive is that Xiaomi has been able to achieve this level of success without focusing a lot on offline sales.

According to a new report, Samsung is going to strengthen its Galaxy J and Galaxy ON series handsets in India. It may be planning aggressive model launches in the Rs. 8,000 ($123) to Rs. 15,000 ($230) range. The new models will directly target some of Xiaomi’s best-selling models and will match them on pricing.

Samsung is also going to leverage its strong position in the country’s retail market by offering a 2-3 percent higher margin to retailers. It will also increase their credit period to 45 days from 30-35 days.

Samsung is also expected to revamp its mobile business team in India as it gears to make a decisive push against Xiaomi in this key market. Whether or not this will work remains to be seen.

AT&T releases October security update for the Galaxy Note 8

AT&T has released last month’s Security Maintenance Update, which addresses a number of vulnerabilities in Samsung’s modified build of the open-source Android operating system, for its carrier-branded variant of the Galaxy Note 8.

Related: Samsung details contents of October security patch

The main purpose of the upgrade, according to Samsung, is to implement a patch for the KRACK vulnerability, which—if not addressed—makes it possible for hackers to eavesdrop on your data when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

It also transports a fix for the BlueBorne exploit, reports PhoneArena.

Galaxy Note 8 review: More than just a Galaxy S8+ with an S Pen

This news comes less than a month after Samsung released a near-identical update for the Galaxy Note 8 in China and Hong Kong; however, it’s still yet to arrive in a number of European countries, including France and the United Kingdom.

How do I install the update on my Galaxy Note 8?

To check to see if the release is ready for your Galaxy Note 8, open Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can always wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to install the OTA.
