Samsung expected to post solid Q1 earnings despite Coronavirus situation

Samsung is going to announce its earnings guidance for Q1 2020 next week. Analysts expect the company to post solid earnings despite the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Even though the Galaxy S20 series didn’t take off as well as the South Korean firm had expected, chip sales are believed to make up for the losses in the smartphone division.

The company is expected to clock in KRW 55.3 trillion ($44.9 billion) in revenue during Q1 2020, which is 5.5 percent up from the same quarter in the previous year. However, operating profit is estimated to drop 0.09 percent to KRW 6.22 trillion ($5 billion). These numbers have been verified by 21 brokerages in South Korea.

Analysts say that Samsung’s semiconductor business will keep the company stay afloat due to the increase in sales of memory and storage chips for servers. The prices of these chips have been steadily improving as well. It is believed that Samsung’s electronics, smartphone, and TV sales have taken a big hit due to the COVID-19 situation.

Hana Financial Investment estimates that Samsung’s smartphone sales during Q1 2020 would be around 62.2 million units, down from 71.5 million units from the previous year. Samsung Display, which makes LCD, QLED, and OLED display panels, has taken a huge hit due to slump in smartphone and TV sales. TV sales dropped due to the postponement of major sporting events such as the Tokyo Olympics and the UEFA championship.

Analysts believe that the smartphone sales slump will remain until Q3 2020 and the numbers will start rising in the fourth quarter of the year. In Q2 2020, sales of semiconductor chips are expected to decline. The company had to close its chipset, smartphones, and TV factories across the world.

Samsung SDI to become more self-reliant in making electric vehicle batteries

Samsung SDI, which makes batteries for various products ranging from smartphones to electric vehicles, plans to become more self-reliant. The company wants to stop using battery components from other brands and make as many parts in-house as possible.

According to a new report from South Korean technology publication The Elec, Samsung SDI is planning to cut costs and become self-reliant by manufacturing cathode internally. A cathode is an essential part of any battery, and the company currently buys it from local cathode makers L&F and Unicore.

Samsung’s battery manufacturing arm reportedly wants to make at least 50% of its cathode supplies in-house by 2023. Currently, the company only makes 20% of cathodes it requires to make batteries. For the successful completion of this move, the company has named the chief of its ESS (Energy Storage Systems) business team to head STM, its cathode-making arm.

Manufacturing cathodes internally will give Samsung SDI a price advantage. As a part of this massive effort, the company has decided to partner with Eco Pro BM for supplying materials to STM. I Eco Pro, the parent firm of Eco Pro BM, had jointly developed cathode for Samsung SDI and Cheil Industries in 2005 and has since attained cathode orders for Cheil Industries.

Samsung SDI’s primary source of revenue is electric vehicle batteries, and the company plans to invest up to KRW 1.2 trillion in its factory in Hungary by 2030. After the completion of this investment, the company plans to make 18 million batteries per month.

Samsung Electronics plans to not depend on Samsung Display for foldable glass

With the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung introduced the Ultra Thin Glass panel to protect the foldable phone’s screen from scratches. The new protective material offers a glass-like feel, something that was missing from the Galaxy Fold’s plastic protective layer.

The Ultra Thin Glass and the foldable OLED panel used in the Galaxy Z Flip are developed by Samsung Display, the South Korean firm’s display manufacturing arm. Samsung Display is the major shareholder in Dowoo Insys, which manufactures foldable glass using German firm SCHOTT’s base material. The Ultra Thin Glass is then merged with the foldable OLED panel, which is then supplied to Samsung Electronics as a single module.

Samsung Electronics wants to develop thicker and cheaper foldable glass

It is now being reported that Samsung Electronics, the business division which makes smartphones, is planning to manufacture foldable glass on its own. There are two reasons why the company wants in-house development of foldable glass: better performance and lower price. Samsung Electronics reportedly wants a more durable foldable glass, which is at least twice as thick as the current version of Ultra Thin Glass. The company reportedly thinks that its current supplier can’t make such a foldable glass.

Moreover, each Ultra Thin Glass panel used in the Galaxy Z Flip costs $40, while the tempered glass used in other phones cost just $2. Samsung Electronics wants to improve the yield of foldable glass and reduce the manufacturing cost. The company has reportedly started working with various foldable glass manufacturing companies for the development of foldable glass. If Samsung Electronics succeeds in making a relatively thicker and cheaper foldable glass, it would be a game-changer.

Samsung Display plans to supply Ultra Thin Glass panels to other smartphone manufacturers who are planning to launch foldable phones. The Galaxy Fold 2, which is expected to be released later this year, will reportedly use Ultra Thin Glass as well.

Only time will tell if Samsung Electronics succeeds in making better foldable glass than Samsung Display. Still, we will surely see a tough competition between the two companies in the future.

Samsung chip division ‘humiliated’ over Snapdragon Galaxy S20 for Korea

The Exynos vs Snapdragon debate has heated up again. Several reports have highlighted the differences between the two chipsets with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 edging out Samsung’s Exynos 990 processor. It’s evident that in the Snapdragon 865 vs Exynos 990 fight, Qualcomm has emerged on the top.

Samsung continues to sell both Snapdragon and Exynos variants of its flagships. It ships the Exynos variants in most markets while markets like the United States and China get the Snapdragon variant. This year it decided to make a significant change for its home country of South Korea. The Galaxy S20 lineup comes with the Snapdragon 865, not the Exynos 990 in South Korea.

Samsung’s chip division tried to get the decision reversed

Qualcomm chips are evidently more efficient than their Exynos counterparts. More efficiency translates to improved battery life and that’s something that directly impacts customers’ experience with Samsung’s handsets. The end result is that some customers feel that they got a slightly inferior product even though they paid the same amount of money as customers in regions where the Snapdragon variants are sold.

Samsung’s shareholders grilled company executives at the recent general meeting about the Exynos chip’s struggles and if there was a plan to improve it. President of Samsung’s mobile division DJ Koh said that Samsung Electronics doesn’t just stick with the Exynos chip because it generates a significant chunk of revenue for the company’s System LSI division, it’s the branch that makes the Exynos chip, but that this decision is made based on “competitive logic.” However, local media reports at that time suggested that the explanation hadn’t adequately addressed shareholders’ concerns.

A report out of South Korea mentions that the decision to ship the Snapdragon Galaxy S20 in South Korea took many at Samsung by surprise, not just at its offices in South Korea but also at the US headquarters. This decision was reportedly made because the Exynos 990 didn’t quite meet performance expectations even after multiple evaluations. Since the 5G push was critical for Samsung’s marketing strategy for the Galaxy S20, the company have decided to favor the more efficient Snapdragon 865 for South Korea, which was the first country to fire up commercial 5G networks and has seen rapid deployment of the next-gen mobile network since last year.

The report also mentions rumors that floated in the company that the System LSI Division had felt “humiliated” because of the decision to ditch the Exynos in favor of the Snapdragon for South Korea. Officials reportedly tried to convince the mobile division to reverse the decision but that obviously did not happen. There’s little evidence to back up these rumors but they do make some sense. It would have been a matter of pride for workers at System LSI and they might not be too happy about seeing a chipset that was designed, engineered and manufactured in South Korea for the flagship series of a company that is a titan of the South Korean industry to not be picked for variants meant for South Korea. That’s gotta hurt.

Samsung may not be giving up on its Exynos chips despite these performance concerns because they still provide the company with leverage against Qualcomm. If the company didn’t have an alternative, it would be completely at Qualcomm’s mercy for chips and may not have much wiggle room in price negotiations. It’s hard to imagine that Qualcomm wouldn’t want to sell chips to Samsung given the kind of numbers that its flagship smartphones sell but in such high-stakes negotiations, it’s always a good idea to have some leverage.

Keeping the Exynos program alive is also part of Samsung’s plan to diversify its revenue streams. The company has been selling chips to several other manufacturers as well. Companies like Vivo are gradually shifting some of their models to Exynos processors. Samsung’s profits took a huge hit last year because of the slowdown in the memory market so the Exynos program can provide a buffer against price shocks for the semiconductor business.

The performance gap between the Exynos and Qualcomm chips is largely down to the former using custom CPU cores. Samsung may have decided to fix this once and for all by ditching custom CPU cores altogether in favor of licensing ARM designs going forward. Some reports have even claimed that Samsung could collaborate with ARM for semi-custom cores. It’s all a bit up in the air right now but it’s evident that the Exynos program is far from done. We know that Samsung fans have had it with the Exynos processors just not being as good as their Snapdragon counterparts. Hopefully, the company has a plan to turn this around.

[Poll] Which Samsung app do you use the most on your Galaxy?

Samsung Galaxy smartphones come preloaded with a number of apps that are made by the company itself, and it also publishes some apps on the Google Play Store. Many complain that some of the preloaded apps are unneeded because all Android devices — including Galaxy devices — also come preloaded with Google apps, which offer much of the same functionality.

However, while that may be true, Samsung has some truly excellent apps and services that you can’t do without, such as Samsung Pay, Samsung Notes, and Samsung Health. Others, like Samsung Music and Samsung Internet, provide functionality that you won’t find on the Google alternatives. There’s also Good Lock, an app that’s filled to the brim with customization options, even though it’s not officially available in many countries and doesn’t come preloaded out of the box, either.

Still, it can’t be denied that every proprietary Samsung app has something to offer for everyone. Of course, some of those apps are more useful than others, and you might also have a favorite or use one more than the others. And in our latest poll, we want to know exactly which of the Samsung apps you use the most on your Galaxy phone. So go ahead and vote below; The poll only lets you select one answer, so if you have more to say, be sure to tell us in the comments section!

US Newberry plant shut down, two employees test positive for coronavirus

Samsung has halted operations at its home appliance manufacturing facility in Newberry County, USA, after two employees tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), according to the local media.

The report from The Newberry Observer citing a Samsung spokesperson reveals that the facility has been temporarily closed today and is to be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before operations resume on April 6.

Samsung’s Newberry plant employs around 1,000 people

Samsung’s Newberry facility in South Carolina is responsible for the manufacturing of home appliances, including the company’s Energy Star-certified washing machines. It employs roughly 1,000 people.

Three years ago, the company invested $380 million in the state of South Carolina for the 151,000 square feet factory to become operational, and production began a year later in 2018 with the help of over 800 full-time and contract workers. That number is said to have increased by roughly 200 over the past two years.

A new coronavirus case was also confirmed at Samsung Austin Semiconductor earlier this week. But unlike in Newberry County, the facilities in Austin have remained operational, and production was not affected.

Meanwhile, Samsung is making worldwide efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus. It has donated $29 million worth of funds and goods over the past three months and has temporarily shut down all of its retail stores across the United States in support of social distancing.

Samsung Gallery update improves Single Take integration

A new update to the Samsung Gallery app is currently being pushed via the Galaxy Store. Its changelong is rather succinct, only mentioning improvements to manner the app interacts with Single Take.

As such, software version 11.1.01.3 will primarily benefit the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung’s first product range with support for Single Take. The move is still a reminder that Single Take functionality is also currently on its way to the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series in addition to the Galaxy Fold, as the One UI 2.1 update for these devices is now rolling out.

Samsung improved Single Take integration

The aforementioned improvements appear to primarily come down to somewhat smoother transitions between Samsung Gallery and Camera while using the Single Take feature. It’s possible some minor, unrelated bug fixes are part of the package as well, though Samsung’s changelog makes no mention of them.

Touted as one of the main selling points of the Galaxy S20 line, Single Take allows you to rely on Samsung’s AI magic to get the best possible shot in any scenario. Using it means holding the virtual shutter button while your flagship captures a wide variety of frames in a 3-10 second window, then presents you with a collection of photos, GIFs, and even videos it deems optimal for the given circumstances.

The newest Samsung Gallery build arrives just in time for the One UI 2.1 update for the Snapdragon 855 variants of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 models which is set to begin rolling out tomorrow. Single Take is part of that comprehensive software package that has already been rolling out to Samsung’s 2019 flagships since last week.

Latest Galaxy S20 update fixes annoying focus issue with zoom camera

Earlier this week, Samsung released yet another update in an attempt to improve the camera performance on its latest flagship series. That update was initially released in Hong Kong and Taiwan and has begun rolling out in Korea today, and changelog for the Korean release reveals that the update fixes an annoying autofocus issue when switching between the main rear camera and the and zoom camera.

As we noted in our Galaxy S20 Ultra review, while autofocus issues with the 108MP primary camera have been fixed, some focus issues remain with the zoom camera. The zoom lens also fails to focus or takes time to focus on the subject every now and then, especially when you are zooming in at a small object (like a bird or a flower) after taking a photo of the same scene with the regular camera. That problem should now be fixed, or at least somewhat alleviated, thanks to the new software update.

The update also makes a lot of other improvements to the camera experience. Quality of Super Slow-mo (960 fps slow motion) videos in low-light conditions has been improved, and the camera should also be less prone to blurring out moving objects when taking regular photos. The translation from Korean is a bit rough, but it seems the camera will now be able to more accurately capture dark and pale skin tones as well.

The update comes with software version G98xNKSU1ATCT in Korea and includes the April 2020 security patch, which Samsung is yet to detail in its monthly security bulletin. It can be downloaded over the air from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu; you can also download the latest firmware from our archive for updating manually. The update will probably roll out in other markets in the coming days, and we will be sure to let you know once that happens.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite US price revealed in new listing

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite has appeared in yet another premature listing, confirming its incoming arrival to the United States. Samsung’s upcoming mid-range tablet has been making the rounds recently so it won’t be long before the tablet is officially launched.

Samsung was already expected to price its new mid-range tablet rather competitively, whereas the slate itself already got prematurely listed on German Amazon several days back.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite’s chipset remains a point of contention

B&H has now followed suit, listing the device with a $350 price tag and a “coming soon” label. That figure is over $100 lower than the aforementioned Amazon one, though the difference isn’t significant when accounting for the fact B&H has no VAT to add to the MSRP, and has only listed a Wi-Fi version of the slate. For reference, one previous leak suggested that the base price of the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite in Europe will stand at €399.

The newly spotted liating also introduce some confusion regarding the system-on-chip inside the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Whereas previous reports suggested the Exynos 9611 will be part of the package, today’s listing mentions the Exynos 9610. It’s possible that this may have just been a placeholder for the B&H website listing, we’ll get to know for sure once the device actually launches.

Following certifications from Bluetooth SIG, as well as telecom authorities in the U.S. and Taiwan, the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite should be hitting the market sooner rather than later. According to previous reports, the tablet will sport a 10.4-inch FHD+ display and come in 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB memory configurations, both of which will make use of a 7,040mAh battery.

Stay Mobile and Protected

This article is written in partnership with bestvpnrating.com

Modern life has shifted to the online and Internet dimension. Everything can be done without the need to leave the comfort of one’s home. Would you like to travel? No problem, with web cameras placed in almost every corner of the world and online museums, it is possible to admire marvels of the planet from a couch.

Even though there can be some geographic restrictions on certain resources, for instance, on Netflix, one may just google how to watch Netflix with VPN and find a suitable service that will help find the solution to remove this restriction.

There is no need to list the benefits provided by the present-day level of technological development. The world is fast and connected, however, there are some pitfalls and even dangers behind this. Let’s get closer to the matter and find out how to protect ourselves.

The Dangers of the Internet-connected World

With the advent of technology, humanity has started using the prefix (or adjective) cyber- with plenty of words: cyber currency, cyber sports, cyber technologies, and more. Cybercriminals and cyber attacks are on the list as well. It means that unlimited possibilities provided by technological innovations are restricted by those who are trying to make money in the new dimension of human activities.

1.   Internet Service Providers Have Access to All the Activities

Everything a person does on the Internet is recorded on servers of providers. Once you open a browser and go online, everything you are doing can become known to the third party. This, undoubtedly, depends on how decent the ISP representatives are. Some of them can commit illegal activities themselves, for example, get the list of compromising sites a person has used and start blackmailing. Some may simply sell these data to someone who will use it in the future.

In the worst case, someone is planning to rob a house. For this, they may collect all the information on owners to be aware of the lifestyle and schedules. Once criminals are sure when hosts will be away, they can break in and steal everything they can take.

You may believe it or not, however, the traces people daily leave on the web may tell a lot to a person who gets access to this information. Besides, if there are smart devices connected to the Internet, intruders may get much more information. Does your coffee machine start automatically every morning while your alarm clock is waking you up? Collection of logs, information from smart gadgets, and the history of visited sites are not only about revealing that someone has watched adult content.

2.   Possible Interception of Sensitive Data

As people are making purchases on the web daily, the information on their bank cards is transmitted from them to the relevant service. Have you ever wondered how quickly your money will disappear from the bank card if this information is stolen in the process of transfer? These are so-called Man-in-the-Middle attacks. An intruder gets access to the connection between a user and a resource and intercepts data that is being sent.

How many times have you sent emails with scans of your documents to the bank or an insurance company? In the same manner, these emails and attachments can be intercepted by people with malicious intentions.

3.   The Internet Is Not Free in Every Country

You are aware of the geographical restrictions of Netflix or the prohibition of YouTube in China. However, this is not just about having no free access to a certain resource in a particular country. Of course, in the countries where no one is talking about censorship, one may find the list of VPNs to use in Canada or the USA, make a choice, and remove any possible geographical restrictions.

However, it is vital to remember that in, for instance, Middle Eastern countries, the use of censored services and resources can be strictly punished even if you are a foreigner. In the United Arab Emirates, even tourists at the territories of hotels are not allowed to use restricted services. Moreover, the utilization of the software that helps eliminate these restrictions is fined for more than a hundred thousand USD with the possibility to be sentenced and imprisoned.

4.   Viruses and Malware

There are plenty of hackers who utilize specially developed software to make money on this. The range of such programs is unimaginable. Some can get access to banking operations and applications and transfer money to the accounts of hackers. However, these are the most complicated types of software.

Other programs simply encrypt everything one has got on the hard drive. To decrypt the information on the PC, a user should have a special key. To obtain it, it is necessary to pay money to a cyber-criminal. Some software will just destroy everything on the hard drive completely. Probably, these programs have been developed to get rid of databases and other information that can be a threat to criminals.

Such software has got algorithms that send emails or messages to people on the list of contacts so that as many users as possible follow a link or download an attachment and get their PC infected.

5.   Always-online Mobile Devices Are in Danger

You are used that your cell phone is constantly connected to the Internet. At home, using your WLAN network is safe. However, going out with a WLAN switched on can be dangerous. It can work as the channel to get access to data on your mobile device that contains not less vital information than a PC. You are probably using a banking app, as well as check your email on the mobile device. Well, email account data and bank passwords suffice to harm you.

All the applications may track your activities and movements. They claim that these data will never be revealed to anyone. Though what if an intruder breaks the system of protection and gets access? Besides, one may also try to install a tracking app that will let a criminal know your location in real-time.

Above, we have listed the most dangerous situations. Of course, it does not mean that every person using the Internet is imposed at the same level of danger. One should understand that, unfortunately, there are threats in the digital world and take measures to avoid getting in trouble.

Ways to protect yourself on the Internet

Every time you are online, remember that this cannot be safe. Thus, before the next time you connect to the Net, make sure that at least some below measures have been taken.

  1. Find a reliable VPN and install it on every device connected to the Internet. Make sure that this service encrypts all the data from your gadgets. The best way is to protect the PC, mobile devices, smart TV, and the router that provides access to the Internet to all the other devices.
  2. Restrain from sending confidential information as a usual attachment to an email. If there is no possibility to bring documents in person, create an encrypted archive and let the other person know the key by an alternative means of communication. The latter should also have encryption algorithms.
  3. Always switch your WLAN off whenever you go out of your home. If there is an urgent need to connect to a public hotspot, which is highly unrecommended though, be sure that a VPN is on.
  4. Install trustworthy antivirus software on your PC, laptop, and mobile devices. It is crucial to regularly update it and check if it functions properly.
  5. Regularly change passwords. Besides, forget about setting the same password to all the accounts and profiles you use. This is the most dangerous approach. Keeping these passwords in the notes or documents on the cell phone is also dangerous. There are various tools that may help you with the generation of reliable passwords.
  6. Never open attachments or click on links if there is even a shadow of a doubt or if you have not expected any information from a sender. Call this person and ask if he/she has sent anything to you. If not, you should report on this email or message. Probably, contact the support team and inform that messages with such content are spread over this service. This will help to reveal who these criminals are.

If you have noticed anything suspicious, it is better to start by informing your bank about this and blocking all the transfers from your bank accounts. Then, inform your relatives and friends so that they do not become the next victims. It is also recommended to report to the police. Cybercrimes have appeared recently, while the development of cyber means to cheat people is faster than the development of preventive and protective measures. Be careful online and follow our recommendations to avoid getting in trouble.

Galaxy A21s with unknown Exynos 850 SoC shows up in benchmark

The Galaxy A21 continues to elude the market, and yet, Samsung is working on an updated version of the device bearing the Galaxy A21s moniker. We exclusively reported on its development two months ago, and now the device popped up online in the Geekbench database.

As expected, the Galaxy A21s is identified by model number SM-A217F, whereas the standard Galaxy A21 is being referred to as the SM-A215. According to the benchmark entry, the Galaxy A21s will be powered by a mysterious Exynos 850 chipset. It features eight CPU cores that seemingly operate at a base frequency of 2.0Ghz, but other details remain unknown.

The Exynos 850 should be a budget chipset, no doubt

It’s unclear if the eight CPU cores will be split into different clusters of 4×4 or 4x2x2 cores, or if they will all have identical characteristics. Samsung will hopefully shed more light on this silicon sooner rather than later, but regardless, the Galaxy A21s is undeniably destined to be a budget phone. Don’t expect any miracles in terms of performance from the so-called Exynos 850. But it will be interesting to see how it performs in its weight class in real-life usage scenarios.

The benchmark also reveals 3GB of RAM and Android 10, and it’s worth reminding that the Galaxy A21s should be equipped with a generous 5,000mAh battery, as per previous reports. The phone is expected to ship in 32GB and 64GB flavors and should be available in black, blue, red, and white. We were also able to confirm that it will carry a 2MP macro camera on the back.

The survey was conducted from March 1 when the campaign began, up until March 31. Throughout this timeframe, the Galaxy S20 became the most popular smartphone across 12 different online channels including communities, social media platforms, blogs, and so on. The flagship’s coverage had reached 53.18% and was followed by the iPhone 11 with 41.12%, and the LG V50s with 5.68%.

BTS Jimin’s Galaxy S20 advert seemingly had a lot of traction

According to the report, the BTS Jimin advert, in particular, had a significant impact on the Galaxy S20’s successful marketing campaign across various online channels. That’s not to say the other members of BTS haven’t pushed the Galaxy S20 into the spotlight. On the contrary, Samsung’s YouTube ads featuring V and Jung Kook have amassed the most views, hovering at around the 850,000/870,000 marks as of this writing, and surpassing Jimin’s ad with 375,000 views.

It’s only fitting for the Galaxy S20 series to become the most popular smartphone of the month, at least as far as exposure is concerned. Samsung has introduced new features and improved upon different areas, including the screen and camera. You can check our Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra reviews for a more in-depth analysis of what the new flagship is capable of.

More Samsung employees test positive to coronavirus

The number of Samsung employees who tested positive to coronavirus continues to rise as the global pandemic rages on, wreaking havoc in communities and the global business landscape.

In recent days, the company has been dealing with isolated COVID-19 cases within its ranks, implementing various precautions and emergency measures to navigate through the crisis.

Samsung not shutting down any more branches following new cases

The chaebol has now confirmed two of its staffers who were in Brazil since January tested positive for COVID-19 following their Monday return to South Korea. No new operations will be suspended in light of the development because both employees were already in self-isolation, in accordance with emergency company policy.

One Samsung official already contracted the new coronavirus strain in Brazil. In response to the outbreak in the South American country, the smartphone giant already shut down operations at its factories in Manaus and Campinas, Sao Paolo. The full effects of those moves are yet to be felt as Samsung is still doing what it can to keep its consumer-facing business chugging along. For example, the firm was even fulfilling Galaxy S20 pre-orders in Brazil earlier than promised so as to avoid contributing to the spread of the virus while still launching its newest Android flagships.

Just yesterday, Samsung confirmed another COVID-19 case at its semiconductor factory in Austin, Texas. The Seoul-based electronics behemoth also reported that one of its workers was infected on a while visiting Europe on official business.

On the other side of the globe, Samsung Vietnam is still trying to keep things going as per plans in spite of a partial lockdown imposed by the Vietnamese government.

Samsung updates its community on its fight against coronavirus worldwide

Samsung’s contribution to fighting the spread of coronavirus is felt in many regions across the globe. The company’s activities in this time of need have covered various countries and numerous areas of expertise, and in a recent statement addressed to its global community, Samsung has provided an update on its response to coronavirus (COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2) so far.

In navigating these uncertain times, Samsung has an important role to look after our employees, support our customers, and aid our communities. We are dedicating resources to help those in need and help us, as a society, emerge stronger on the other side.

Supporting the global workforce

Samsung has a responsibility to keep its employees away from the threat of coronavirus as much as possible. To this end, the company has strongly advised its employees to work from home and has provided its workforce with resources and updates on guidelines issued by health authorities to combat coronavirus.

The company has restricted business travels except for when they are deemed critical. Likewise, Samsung mandated temperature checks and health screenings for employees working in offices and facilities that need to remain operational to provide services and products to customers. They have also implemented regular deep cleaning to decrease the chances of infection.

Meanwhile, countless facilities and stores across the globe – including but not limited to Canada, China, Malaysia, and the USA – have been temporarily shut down in support of social distancing.

Maintaining customers and partners relationships

It must be difficult for a company of Samsung’s caliber to maintain its relationships with customers and partners in these tumultuous times, particularly when many of its operations have taken a hit or have been shut down.

The company’s online customer care lines have remained operational, but its service centers have been shut down due to COVID-19. Therefore, customer warranties that were bound to expire while services are unavailable have been extended by one month.

Samsung has donated $29 million worth of funds and goods since January

According to Samsung’s recent update on coronavirus, throughout the year so far, the company has donated $29 million worth of funds and goods to communities and governments, including medical supplies and hygiene kits.

Meanwhile, one of Samsung’s facilities in South Korea has become a care center for COVID-19 patients. The company’s engineers have lent their expertise to domestic manufacturers, bolstering the production of face masks, creating molds, and establishing smart factories. With Samsung’s help, the South Korean government was also able to secure critical material for mask manufacturing from overseas.

Samsung is donating equipment, smartphones, and tablets

Samsung is also donating air purifiers and appliances to hospitals and quarantine centers, including in India. Likewise, it has donated smartphones to patients in quarantine to help them communicate with their friends and families. Tablets have been donated to educational institutions, and the company’s CSR education modules are made available online.

The company had concluded its recent report on the progress against coronavirus by thanking its customers, partners, employees, and communities for their support, adding that Samsung will stand strong with you as we look ahead to a promising future.

Galaxy Note 9 picks up update with April 2020 security patch

The April 2020 security patch has rolled out to a handful of Galaxy devices in the last week, and it is now making its way to the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung has released a new Galaxy Note 9 update in Germany that bundles the April security patch. The update sports build number N960FXXU5DTCA and should begin rolling out in other markets in the next few days.

For those wondering, this update does not bring One UI 2.1 to Samsung’s 2018 Note flagship. According to the latest available information, Samsung isn’t planning to bring One UI 2.1 to the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9. That is bound to disappoint many owners of these devices, especially when you consider the fact that One UI 2.1 includes a Pro Video mode for the camera, a feature that was initially available on the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 but was taken away with the One UI 2.0 update.

So, if you own a Galaxy Note 9, you should be prepared for the possibility that you will not be getting any new features on your phone with updates going forward, unless Samsung makes some much-needed changes to its software update policy. Security patches, however, will continue to come out monthly (for the most part) till at least the end of 2021.

You can download the April security update that’s rolling out now directly on your Note 9 by opening its Settings app, navigating to Software update, and selecting Download and install. The latest firmware is also available for immediate download from our firmware archive.
