Stable Galaxy S10 and Note 10 Android 10 update coming in January?

Every year, Samsung posts a roadmap for when it expects individual Galaxy devices to get the update to the next version of Android. Samsung Israel has published the roadmap for the Android 10 update on the Samsung Members app, and, well, it says that the stable Android 10 update will not make its way to any Galaxy phone or tablet before January 2020. Yes, that includes the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10.

Galaxy S10, Note 10, and Note 9 in January, Galaxy S9 in April

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy Note 9 will get the update in January, according to Samsung Israel, while the Galaxy S9 is scheduled to be updated much later in April. Now, it’s entirely possible that these are just early estimates that could change later. Google revealed earlier this year that Samsung has promised to update some of its devices to Android 10 before 2020, and with the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta program progressing so quickly, it’s a bit doubtful that Samsung will not be able to release the stable update this year.

Another explanation is that Samsung will not roll out the official Android 10 update to the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series in every country this year, which would be in line with how the company usually deals with major Android OS upgrades. Also odd is the three-month gap between the release time frame for the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9. The Note 9 did get the One UI 2.0 beta before the Galaxy S9, but since the S9 is also expected to get the beta soon, it’s another sign that the roadmap published by Samsung Israel won’t apply to every market.

Some mid-range phones to also get Android 10 by April

According to the roadmap, mid-range phones like the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A70 will also get the update in April, while owners of devices like the Galaxy Tab S4 will have to wait until September. As always, all we can do is wait and watch how things will unfold and whether these estimated release time frames pan out to be accurate. Hopefully, Samsung will start posting a roadmap in more countries soon so consumers can get a clearer picture of when they can expect their device to make the jump to Android 10 and One UI 2.0.

You can check if Samsung has posted the Android 10 roadmap for your country by opening the Samsung Members app and tapping the bell icon on top to go into the Notices section.

Samsung awarded for environmental sustainability of its semiconductor products

Samsung Electronics’ 512GB eUFS 3.0 solution has become the first mobile memory in the industry to be awarded the Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint Certifications from Carbon Trust, an independent, UK-based non-profit organization that’s on a mission to push various industries into sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and water usage throughout the production cycle.

Samsung’s eUFS 3.0 solution is inherently more sustainable

One of the greater advantages of Samsung’s fifth-gen V-NAND memory technology is that it allows eUFS 3.0 storage to be more power-efficient while boasting twice the capacity of eUFS 2.1 based on fourth-gen V-NAND. By using a unique etching technology, Samsung can create chips that are 25% smaller and pack nearly two times more stacked layers compared to fourth-gen V-NAND.

The benefits of this technology, however, are not limited to better performance. The manufacturing process of each fifth-gen V-NAND cell layer requires fewer resources and minimizes the overall increase in carbon and water footprints. Therefore, Samsung’s 512GB eUFS 3.0 storage has been recognized as the most sustainable solution in the industry. Its environmental footprint consists of 0.31m3 H2O and 13.4Kg CO2, which is comparable to the level of CO2 that would be absorbed by two 30-year-old pine trees over the course of one year.

Aside from the award given by Carbon Trust, Samsung also received Environmental Product Declaration labels from the Korean Ministry of Environment for its 1TB eUFS 2.1 and fifth-gen 512GB V-NAND solutions.

The award ceremony will take place at the British Embassy in Seoul, and Samsung said that it is going to continue and employ high-capacity premium memory solutions for “many more flagship smartphones” – the Galaxy S11 would be an easy guess – all the while aiming to strengthen its global partnerships with other OEMs.

Galaxy S11 series could adopt laser auto-focus for the main cameras

To nobody’s surprise, the Galaxy S11 series has become a hot topic of conversation fueled by leaks and rumors. The recent unofficial CAD renders depicting the alleged Galaxy S11e and Galaxy S11 have led to a few speculations, one of which pertains to the main camera setup and the possibility that the Galaxy S11 flagship lineup could make use of laser auto-focus technology.

As usual, some educated guesses can be made as to what the future lineup will have in store for Galaxy fans, but other aspects remain unclear or shrouded in complete mystery. As far as laser auto-focus is concerned, this isn’t a groundbreaking or new technology so it’s not so outlandish to consider the possibility that Samsung will adopt it. Then again, unofficial CAD renders are the basis of this rumor so it remains open for debate.

Rumors point at laser auto-focus, which could mean the end of PDAF?

Laser auto-focus was first employed by the LG G3 more than four years ago but was abandoned by the company in favor of Phase Detection Auto-Focus with the launch of the LG G6. In theory, laser auto-focus provides the fastest focusing method and performs great in any lighting conditions, but its biggest downside is that it has a difficult time focusing on long-distance objects.

Assuming that the rumor turns out to be true and the Galaxy S11 series will adopt a laser auto-focus module, this could mean that Samsung will abandon PDAF as well; unless the company can use both.

Obviously, there’s no way of knowing for sure at this point, but if Samsung could find a way to combine both PDAF and laser auto-focus into a single package then the Galaxy S11 camera might be able to deliver great results both in landscape and macro photography.

It’s still too early to tell, so a bit of skepticism might be healthy

However the Galaxy S11 series will turn out, we advise readers to take these hypotheses for what they are and keep a pinch of salt nearby. At the end of the day, that indication of a small additional sensor visible in the recent CAD renders could be anything.

Even if the dimensions used to create the CAD renders are accurate, there’s not much information that these files can confirm in terms of internal specifications. The new camera layout could mark the end of Samsung’s signature design, but time will tell just how fundamentally different the setup will be under the hood.

As always, we’ll keep you posted if we find out more. Until then, what’s your take on this recent rumor, and do you think bringing back laser auto-focus would be a good idea? Leave a comment below.

Show your love of Star Trek on your Samsung phone with these fresh themes and stamps

Samsung has embraced the Star Wars universe in its own way, first by launching an ad to promote its Galaxy ecosystem along with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and then by announcing a full-fledged Galaxy Note 10+ Star Wars Special Edition.

Now, if you’re a fan of both Samsung and Star Trek then you might feel a bit left out in light of these events. But fret not, there are still plenty of ways for you to show your love of the Star Trek universe using official smartwatch and smartphone themes, icon packs, Always on Displays, and even stamps for your photos and videos.

Galaxy Themes has plenty of goodies for Trekkers

CBS Studios launched a couple of new Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Mirror Universe stamp sets throughout November, and if this is the first time you’re hearing about them then you might want to check them out on the Galaxy Store. They aren’t free of charge (none of the items mentioned in this story are) but they look very nice indeed and they could make for interesting additions to your photos and videos.

Now, if you’re more interested in customizing your phone then you might be happy to learn that the Star Trek: Captain Kirk theme was also added to the Galaxy Themes Store earlier this month to complement the existing Star Trek: Spock theme. They come with different icon designs as well as appropriate yellow and blue color schemes.

There are plenty of other themes to choose from for The Next Generation, Enterprise, Discovery, as well as the Mirror Universe. As usual, buyers can acquire full themes or buy icon packs, wallpapers, and Always on Displays separately. You can go one step further into customization and mix and match different components of various themes together if that’s your thing.

Remember that these Galaxy Themes and Icons can be downloaded in trial mode and used for 10 minutes; that way you can see for yourself how a theme would look like on your Galaxy smartphone before you engage and make a purchase.

Are there any Star Trek fans among our readers? Do you like or own any of these themes and goodies? What other Star Trek-related themes would you like to see on the store? I, for one, wouldn’t mind if they’d add a Q theme. Join us in the comment section below.

Samsung’s SSDs could be employed by the next-gen Sony PS5 console

Over the past month or so, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 next-gen console, particularly in regards to storage mediums and how SSDs will improve the next generation. What does this have to do with Samsung, you may ask? Well, it turns out that Samsung might be Sony’s SSD supplier for the PS5.

The Korean tech giant hosted the Samsung SSD Forum 2019 in Tokyo last week. At the event, the company reportedly confirmed that it is working on a new NVMe SSD solution which should be the perfect fit for gaming consoles. Although the Sony PS5 wasn’t outright mentioned on stage, Samsung did show a slide depicting the PS4 along with the caption SSD is required for proper game play.

Now, it could be that Samsung aims to bag both Sony and Microsoft as its SSD customers, but the presence of the PS4 in the aforementioned slide has fueled the idea that at least the Sony PS5 will be taking advantage of this technology once it launches next year.

Samsung’s SSD will help to improve load times

It seems like the next-generation of gaming consoles will put a greater emphasis on minimizing load times. Some contenders like Google’s Stadia aim to do this by abandoning the traditional console format and relying on cloud computing/streaming instead. On the other hand, Sony, at least, seems to want and achieve higher performance through better (local) hardware, which is arguably the preferred way to go.

Ongoing gaming consoles like the PlayStation 4 Pro ship with an HDD instead of an SSD, but this is expected to change with the next-gen PS5. There is, of course, a matter of cost to consider. SSD prices have dropped over the years but 1GB of SSD storage still costs a lot more than 1GB of HDD storage, so it will be interesting to see how the next-gen consoles will tackle this issue.

In any case, Samsung’s semiconductor division is bound to profit from this apparent collaboration. NAND flash and DRAM sales have slowed down in the first half of the year, and Intel is threatening to take back its top spot from Samsung by the end of 2019 even if the latter company managed to increase its DRAM market share in Q3.

Either way, Sony’s gaming division has a very large customer base, and if the PS5 will employ an SSD made by Samsung then the company’s semiconductor business is surely going to benefit from it. Even more so if Sony is not going to be the only client and if Microsoft’s next-gen console will also rely on Samsung’s SSD solution.

[Poll] Would you buy a mid-range Galaxy phone for the S Pen?

When the Galaxy Note series first debuted back in 2011, it was supposed to offer two attractions that you couldn’t find on any other smartphone, Galaxy-branded or otherwise: a big screen, and the S Pen stylus. Over the years, big screens have become quite mainstream, but the S Pen has remained unmatched and is currently the only feature that truly differentiates Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup.

While Samsung has been making mid-range tablets that support the S Pen, the stylus has not been seen on any Galaxy smartphone other than a Galaxy Note flagship, except for the Galaxy Note 3 Neo that was launched in 2014. Now, Samsung is working on a device called the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, which could possibly be a upper mid-range device that’s bundled with the S Pen. And, recently, we speculated that the S Pen may end up coming to the Galaxy A series as well, after discovering a mysterious new Samsung device that doesn’t fit any of the company’s current smartphone lineups.

In short, the S Pen may soon cease to be exclusive to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note smartphones. For many, that will hurt the charm and uniqueness of the Galaxy Note series, but for Samsung, it makes sense. The company’s latest flagships are doing quite well, but the general trend in the smartphone market these days suggests that consumers are no longer as interested in flagship phones as they were a few years ago.

People are also holding on to their phones longer, and competition in the mid-range market is getting more and more intense at the same time. Samsung may not be able to match the competition when it comes to the value-for-money quotient in the mid-range segment, but it can attract customers by offering a feature like the S Pen and the related software functionality, which no other manufacturer has been able to replicate.

And here’s the question we’re asking today: Would you buy a mid-range Galaxy smartphone for the S Pen? Vote in the poll below, then tell us why you would or would not buy a mid-range phone for the S Pen — and any other thoughts you may have on the matter — down in the comments section.

T-Mobile Galaxy S8 November security update released

Late last week, the November 2019 security patch was released for the unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the US. Today, T-Mobile is rolling out the latest security update to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on its network, becoming the first carrier to do so. The November security update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ comes a little over a week after T-Mobile’s previous update for the device, which brought improvements to RCS messaging.

The November update for Galaxy devices brings fixes for two critical vulnerabilities. One of those allows unauthorized access to a phone’s photos and videos and its camera to malicious apps, while the other allows full control of a device by taking advantage of an exploit within the Chrome web browser. Both vulnerabilities affect Android devices from other manufacturers as well and are not exclusive to Samsung phones and tablets.

T-Mobile’s November update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is currently available via our firmware database (S8 | S8+). It doesn’t seem to have been released over the air yet, but that should change within a day or so. You can check your phone to see if it’s already available over the air by opening the Settings app and going into the Software update menu. The software version for the update is G950USQS7DSK2 and G950USQS7DSK2 for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ respectively.
