Verizon Galaxy Tab S4 Android 10 update is now available

It has been three months since Samsung started rolling out the Android 10 update for the LTE Galaxy Tab S4. The update was first released in France before gradually being made available in other markets. Android 10 for the Galaxy Tab S4 brought One UI 2.1 and many of the new features that this firmware promised.

Carriers in the United States often lag behind when it comes to rolling out updates. This won’t come as a surprise to those who subscribe to the country’s largest mobile carrier. The Verizon Galaxy Tab S4 Android 10 update is just now being released, three months after the update was initially sent out.

Verizon Galaxy Tab S4 finally gets Android 10 and One UI 2.1

Verizon is rolling out firmware version T837VVRU4CTH6 for the cellular variant of the Galaxy Tab S4 on its network. This brings the much awaited Android 10 update to users in addition to all of the features that are part and parcel of One UI 2.1.

Some of the new features include Live Transcribe, gesture navigation, Sound Amplifier, Focus Mode, Samsung Daily replacing Bixby Home and more. Other One UI 2.1 features that come with this update include Quick Share, Music Share and the new Gallery app. There’s an improved layout in the camera app as well as a redesigned Device Care section.

The update comes with the August 2020 security patch. It’s now being rolled out by Verizon so it may take a few hours before an update notification pops up for all users in the United States.

You can buy the Samsung 980 PRO SSD this month, price confirmed

Samsung today confirmed the price and availability details for its new PCIe 4.0-ready 980 PRO SSD. The company showed off this M.2 NVMe SSD at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January this year. The details revealed at that time were slim but it did confirm that the SSD was capable of reaching extremely high sequential read/write speeds.

We knew that this high-performance SSD was going to be launched soon as it was recently greenlit by South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency. PC owners looking for a fast and high-end storage solution now have a great option in the 980 PRO SSD.

980 PRO is Samsung’s first consumer PCIe 4.0 SSD

The biggest selling point of this SSD is its compatibility with M.2 slots over the PCIe 4.0 interface. Those who use the SSD with a compatible motherboard will be able to achieve sequential read / write speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and 5,000MB/s, respectively. Samsung claims that this makes the 980 PRO up to twice as fast as PCI 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times faster than conventional SATA SSDs.

PCIe 4.0 adoption is only just gaining steam and the arrival of this SSD may give PC builders an incentive to upgrade to a motherboard with a compatible M.2 slot in order to get peak performance out of the 980 PRO. Even when hooked up to a M.2 slot with PCIe 3.0 which is the interface that’s supported by most motherboards currently, the 980 PRO can reach sequential read / write speeds of 3,500MB/s and up to 3,450MB/s for the 1TB model respectively.

Samsung has confirmed that customers will be able to buy the 980 PRO SSD starting this month across the globe. It’s available in 1TB, 500GB and 250GB models for $229.99, $149.99 and $89.99 respectively. A 2TB model is also going to be released before the end of this year.

Watch free TV on your Galaxy phone with the new Samsung TV Plus app

Samsung today announced that it’s bringing the Samsung TV Plus app to select Galaxy smartphones. It’s is a free service that has previously only been available on 2016 – 2020 Samsung smart TVs. The app is now making its way for several Galaxy smartphones. It will be available for download from the Galaxy Store and the Google Play Store.

Samsung TV Plus provides viewers with instant access to free shows that they can binge watch and fresh content from 135 channels. The service was previously available completely free for owners of select Samsung smart TV models and it’s now being expanded to the company’s smartphones.

Samsung TV Plus is coming to Galaxy smartphones

Samsung TV Plus is unlike any other streaming service in that it’s only limited to the company’s own devices and it provides them with free TV with no strings attached. Users don’t have to download anything except the app, they don’t have to put in their credit card details, purchase a subscription or an additional device to access TV Plus.

Everything is delivered through a dedicated app that has previously been available for the company’s TVs. A new app is going to be available for select Galaxy smartphones from tomorrow. Only those who own a device from the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 10 or Galaxy S10 series will be able to use the app. It’s surprising that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 isn’t on the list even though it would have been perfect for some casual TV viewing.

Don’t expect any premium cable networks on TV Plus, even though it does offer a respectable list of channels and TV shows. The 135-strong list include channels like CBS News, Bloomberg TV+, ET Live, BeINSPORTS XTRA, FOX SOUL, Science TV and more. An internet connection is required to stream the content which may also have geo restrictions for users outside the United States.

[Poll] How are you liking the Samsung Galaxy Note 20?

It has been a month since Samsung’s new flagship phablet hit the market. Of the two models being offered, the Galaxy Note 20 is clearly one that you need to put a lot of thought into before buying. Its price tag took many by surprise and the consensus was that Samsung was asking too much for a phone that offered too little for the price.

As we pointed out in our Galaxy Note 20 review, the handset doesn’t feature 120Hz refresh rate, doesn’t have a microSD card slot, S Pen latency isn’t as low as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, doesn’t get Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and has a lot more humble camera specs compared to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Yet, it costs $999.

If you decided to buy the Galaxy Note 20, we’d like to know if you’re still liking the phone a month or so after using it as your daily driver. Are you satisfied with it or regretting the purchase? Vote below and share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

Fifth Samsung India E.D.G.E. campus program kicks off in virtual format

Samsung India’s campus program E.D.G.E. (Empowering Dreams Gaining Excellence) has kicked off once again, allowing students from the country’s top colleges to exhibit their talents in a series of competitions, interact with Samsung’s top leaders, and potentially gain a head-start in their careers.

This is the fifth edition of E.D.G.E and like many other Samsung events that kicked off this year – including Galaxy Unpacked – the 2020 campus program will take place exclusively in a virtual environment. We live in the age of social distancing after all, so the virtual format is not at all unexpected.

Regardless, E.D.G.E. participants consist of students from 20 campuses including engineering colleges, design schools, and top business schools. Students can form three-member teams and team members can belong to different years and/or specializations. Students and teams will compete in three rounds, the first of which will be focused on the concept of ideation. Participant teams will have to work on research and analysis, and formulate an innovative approach to a given problem.

Samsung India hasn’t yet revealed what this year’s topic will be, but the theme of E.D.G.E. 2019 was Driving for Change and participants had to come up with solutions to micro issues affecting local communities. The E.D.G.E. program welcomed 3,873 students last year and team Skyforce won the competition by proposing a technology-based solution for ASHA workers to address issues such as information asymmetry, tracking, and manual data registration.

Galaxy Tab S7 promo gives bad BTS drawing advice

If you want to learn how to draw BTS with an S Pen, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7 advertisements unsurprisingly aren’t the place to do it. They aren’t bad for inspiration, though, as evidenced by a new promo that just went live in Korea. The video that you can see below shows a sped up, hacky process of drawing BTS. The issue is that it relies on tracing, which is super easy to do on a tablet, of course, but isn’t an experience you are likely to learn from.

That aside, the promo also features Clip Studio Paint, whose Android version at last debuted alongside Samsung’s latest stylus-equipped gadgets, DeX Mode support in tow.

Samsung’s BTS collaboration will continue at tomorrow’s Unpacked

Overall, anyone interested in learning how to draw on their brand-new Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Tab S7 should turn to more conventional learning methods, be that classes or YouTube. As for an artist’s tools of choice, there’s no shortage of amazing S Pen drawing apps on the Google Play Store and Galaxy Store to choose from, so try to pick one you like best and focus on mastering it because constant switching will just be an unnecessary distraction.

Regarding BTS, Samsung’s collaboration with the megapopular boy band is scheduled to continue tomorrow when the K-Pop stars will be making an appearance at the final Unpacked event of the year. The one taking place in honor of the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, Samsung’s value-oriented flagship expected to hit the stores next month.

Sumit Walia rejoins Samsung India’s efforts to increase market share

Samsung India has reportedly brought Sumit Walia back on board with the company as part of its plan to compete more successfully against Chinese rivals. Sumit Walia has worked with Oppo for a full year until July and was largely responsible for the company’s relative success in the country. According to Canalys, Oppo was the fifth-largest smartphone brand in India in Q1 2020 but outperformed Realme in Q2 to capture fourth place.

Sumit Walia has been appointed the head of marketing for Samsung India’s mobile division. Nevertheless, he is no stranger to Samsung’s corporate structure. Prior to working with Oppo, Sumit Walia occupied various roles at Samsung over the course of nine years. He also has prior experience working with Huawei, LG Electronics, Videocon, and Tata Teleservices.

Sumit Walia’s appointment is crucial for the company’s efforts

Samsung seemingly wants the appointment of Sumit Walia as the head of marketing to create a ripple effect across the mobile landscape in India. Specifically, the company expects more people who are currently working for Oppo – and who have previously worked for Samsung – to follow Sumit Walia in rejoining Samsung’s side. According to an industry insider cited by ETTelecom, Sumit Walia’s appointment is crucial for the company’s efforts to increase market share in India.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung was the second-largest smartphone maker in India by shipment in Q2 2020 with a 26% share of the market. Xiaomi was leading the pack with 29% market share. Likewise, Samsung was the second-largest online smartphone retailer after Xiaomi over the same three-month period with 25% market share. Oppo had little-to-no online market share in Q2 and only time will tell if the company’s fortunes will change now that Sumit Walia has left to rejoin Samsung.

Galaxy Note 20 vs. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra drop test result might surprise you

There is quite a bit of feature parity between the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. They use different screens, cameras, batteries, and materials for their builds. While the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra uses Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and the rear, the Galaxy Note 20 has to make do with the Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and plastic at the rear. Now, the strength of the two phones and their materials have been compared in a new drop test video, and the results are surprising.

A new video by YouTube channel PhoneBuff shows how the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra fare when they are dropped. The video consists of back, front, and edge drop tests for the two smartphones. In the first test, the two devices were dropped on a concrete slab with their backs facing down. The Galaxy Note 20’s plastic back suffered minor scratches, but the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s glass back shattered towards the top left corner. Surprised? Well, the test shows that plastic might not feel premium and it picks up scratches relatively easily, but it doesn’t shatter as glass does.

Both phones fared well in the edge drop test and didn’t show any major sign of damage. Coming to the front drop test, both phones survived beautifully even after multiple drops on concrete, and made it to bonus rounds. The Galaxy Note 20 survived as many as ten drops on its face without showing any damage. The screen, touch panel, and the in-display fingerprint reader all worked as they should even after so many 5-feet drops. See the full drop test video below and let us know your thoughts about it.

How long will the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ be supported?

Samsung was previously committed to providing only two major OS upgrades for its Android smartphones. This meant that two years was as long as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were going to be supported. It came with Android 8.0 out of the box and has since received its Android 9.0 and Android 10 updates.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will not receive another major Android OS upgrade. However, Samsung does have the ability to bring additional features to the devices through new One UI updates. It has done that this year and it’s quite possible it may do so again in the coming months.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ no longer supported for Android upgrades

Samsung announced last month that it’s going to support select devices for three Android OS upgrades. The eligible devices don’t include Galaxy S models released before the Galaxy S10. All previous models are not eligible.

So this leaves the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ out of luck. It did take everyone by surprise when it announced that One UI 2.1 is going to be released for these handsets. Samsung eventually released One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ three months ago. The new update brought features like Music Share, Quick Share, Single Take, the new camera zoom interface and more.

One UI is Samsung’s custom skin and it’s not beholden to Android. Even though these devices won’t get another major Android OS upgrade, Samsung is free to release another One UI update if it deems fit. The company might actually be thinking about that.

Samsung revealed the list of devices that will receive One UI 2.5 last month and it includes both of these handsets. Remember, this iteration of One UI was introduced with the Galaxy Note 20 series. It will be very impressive if Samsung releases the update for the 2018 flagships. The company hasn’t confirmed exactly when it’s going to send out this update.

As for the question of how long will the Galaxy S9 be supported, new Android upgrades are out of the question and One UI 2.5 might possibly be the last update of its kind for these devices. Samsung will continue to provide security updates for another year. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are currently on the monthly cycle for security updates. They will eventually be demoted to the quarterly cycle the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are on now before software support completely dries up.

Samsung Pay now allows Australian users to make high-value purchases without PIN

Samsung has launched a new feature in Australia that allows Samsung Pay users to validate high-value purchases without entering the PIN. The CDCVM (Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method) feature, which applies to transactions above $100 (or $200 with some merchants), allows users to verify high-value purchases using their own device rather than touching the PIN pad on the PoS (Point of Sale) device.

Samsung Pay users in Australia can validate high-value transactions using fingerprint, iris, or PIN on their compatible smartphones. The CDCVM feature is not only faster but also allows users to maintain a greater level of hygiene, which is incredibly helpful during this pandemic.

The CDCVM feature is now available to Australian Samsung Pay users who have AMEX, MasterCard, and VISA cards via a software update. However, MasterCard users who added their cards to the Samsung Pay app before July 21 would need to delete their cards and add them again to enable the new feature.

Mark Hodgson, Head of Services at Samsung Australia, said, “The launch of Samsung’s new CDCVM solution is the result of our ongoing investment in offering our Australian customers with the best possible digital wallet experience. CDCVM provides users with a payment experience which is both convenient and secure, and faster at the checkout.

Us fans of Samsung and its foldables are asking Apple to do better

Samsung’s biggest rival in the mobile industry, Apple, will hold an iPhone launch event by the end of the year, but unless the company has a spectacular ‘one more thing‘ moment up its sleeve, it’s highly unlikely for it to reveal any fresh products aside from a new iPhone model. For reasons unknown, Apple has yet to jump on the foldable bandwagon and we can be almost certain this won’t change at the next keynote. This is both good and bad news for Samsung and fans of the brand.

Samsung has just released the sequel to the original Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, as its third-ever foldable smartphone. The mobile industry has had a working, viable foldable device for a year now, but no other OEM aside from Samsung has made a serious attempt at cracking this nut. For the most part, that’s totally understandable. Creating a foldable device implies a serious risk. The technology is young, costly, and it would be ill-advised for a small company to make a huge investment in a foldable device when there’s a high risk of no return. Apple, however, has no excuse other than its own obsession with cash flow.

Apple is often called an innovator, especially by its fans, but its lack of involvement with the emerging flexible display technology suggests otherwise. That’s not to say the company has no innovations under its belt, but Apple’s strength over the years has been its concise, clear vision and its ability to polish existing concepts and ideas to higher standards; not innovation. It has the ‘iteration’ component of ‘innovation’ expertly figured out, but it’s not willing to go all in with any innovative ideas unless they’ve been tested long enough by someone else.

Here we are, one year into the age of foldable devices and Apple has shown no involvement or intention to improve it in any way. The company sits on a pile of gold. It’s market cap of $1.3 trillion is higher than the GDP of most countries, yet Apple doesn’t seem to have the guts to compete with Samsung in the foldable segment unless its chances of success are high enough, according to its own metrics.

Apple’s lack of innovation might be hurting Samsung and its customers

At face value it’s easy to celebrate Apple’s lack of interest in foldable devices, especially if you’re a Samsung fan. It looks like Samsung is already winning the foldable device competition by a long stretch, so why would we care if Apple doesn’t want to create its own foldable device to compete with Samsung? That’s good for the Korean tech giant, right?

That may be true but Samsung not having any serious competition in the foldable segment isn’t going to do customers any favors in the long run. Samsung and Apple have been competing for a decade, but the former company wouldn’t be as successful as it is now if it wasn’t for Apple trying to one-up it every year.

Other, smaller OEMs have attempted to join the foldable segment early-on but failed. Apple seems to be the only company with the resources necessary to become a real competitor to Samsung’s foldable product portfolio, and without that competition, we’re fearing that Samsung itself will stop making its future foldable devices as good as they can be.

On one hand, we’re proud of Samsung’s courage to kickstart the foldable movement, but on the other, we’re worrying that Samsung will stop pushing the bar as high as it can because it has no real competition. And although it is unusual for Samsung fans such as ourselves to be looking with disappointment at Apple’s lack of involvement in the foldable segment, most Apple fans surely won’t demand anything more from their brand of choice… You could say we’re at a point where us Samsung fans demand more from Apple…

The good news is that Apple may have ordered foldable screen samples from Samsung, at least according to a recent rumor. This could indicate that Apple is not ignoring the foldable segment entirely and that the company might be following its usual strategy of letting rival companies do the real groundwork and then jump on the bandwagon whenever it feels safest. Unsurprisingly, Apple probably won’t leverage its own resources to truly break new ground, so it may take a few more years before it joins the foldable segment. Our only hope is that this lack of competition won’t persuade Samsung to stop pushing its own limits.
