Samsung Electro-Mechanics might sell its wireless division this month

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is looking to sell its wireless communication business and numerous parties have shown an interest in acquiring it. According to a recent report from South Korea, a total of nine companies have lined up as potential buyers for Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ wireless business ever since the Korean tech giant has put it up for sale, but now there are only two contenders left.

Only one of these two unnamed companies will come out on top in this race and the preferred bidder should be revealed before the end of November. According to KB Securities analysts, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is asking more than 100 billion won ($89 million) for its wireless communication business.

The buyer could get the rights to sell Wi-Fi modules to Samsung Electronics

The buyer will not only acquire Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ Wi-Fi business but also over 100 of its current employees. In addition, the deal will likely allow the buyer to then sell Wi-Fi modules to Samsung’s own mobile business. This seemingly is a great prospect for potential buyers as they would not only acquire the business itself – and its employees – but also one of the biggest clients in the mobile segment.

As for the reasons why Samsung Electro-Mechanics wants to sell its wireless business division, they remain somewhat vague but they may have something to do with Samsung Electro-Mechanics failing to turn a profit from selling Wi-Fi modules to its sister company. Either way, the wireless business division covers only around 10% of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ sales, so a large chunk of the company will remain intact after the deal concludes.

Galaxy S21 Ultra and Exynos 1080 SoC acquire key regulatory approvals

It’s hard to believe that the Galaxy S21 series is only a couple of months away but recent evidence suggests that Samsung’s upcoming flagship lineup will indeed hit the market earlier than expected. The Galaxy S21 should be unveiled in January instead of February, and a couple of regulatory bodies have recently hinted at the series’ imminent release.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra, bearing model number SM-G998U to be precise, was recently mentioned by the NFC regulatory agency in a certificate that was approved earlier this week. The certificate doesn’t reveal any phone characteristics but it confirms that, as far as the NFC Forum is concerned, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is ready to hit the market. Meanwhile, Bluetooth has also approved another one of Samsung’s key products of 2021.

Bluetooth approves Samsung’s new Exynos 1080 chipset

In parallel with the Galaxy S21 Ultra acquiring its NFC certificate, the upcoming Exynos 1080 SoC also saw a surprise entry in the Bluetooth database. The chipset is compatible with Bluetooth version 5.2 and it was successfully tested by the regulatory agency over the past few days.

It’s important to keep in mind that even though the Exynos 1080 SoC is one of Samsung’s highly anticipated mobile products of 2021, the chipset might have nothing to do with the Galaxy S21 series. It’s believed that the Exynos 1080 will be an Exynos 980 successor, meaning that it’s being built as an upper mid-range solution.

Preliminary Exynos 1080 benchmark results already are impressive but even so, the Exynos 1080 might not be used by the Galaxy S21 Ultra or any other models in the 2021 flagship series. Instead, Samsung is reportedly working on another, more powerful chipset for its future flagship, called the Exynos 2100. The Exynos 1080 may have been built for Chinese customers like Vivo and Oppo. The chipset will be fully unveiled on November 12 at a press conference held in Shanghai, China.

Samsung amazingly isn’t done with Galaxy Tab S2 security updates

It would appear Samsung isn’t done with updating the Galaxy Tab S2, or whatever you have left of that tablet five years and two months following its release. Over the last several days, select variants of the said tablet began receiving a new Android security patch level dated October 1st, 2020. So, not the very latest one, but given how this thing released back when Spain was still the football world champion and Obama was in the White House, this really isn’t that big of a deal.

Identified by software version NRD90M.T818VVRS4BTJK, the unexpected security update for the Galaxy Tab S2 is reportedly already available to Verizon customers in the United States, as well as parts of South America. Only the 9.7-inch variant of the tablet has been confirmed as receiving this over-the-air release so far and it remains to be seen if and when the smaller Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 follows suit.

Just another reminder of Samsung’s industry-leading security practices

No other changes are understandably part of this over-the-air release, with the Galaxy Tab S2 still running the old Samsung Experience based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Expect this OTA version to soon show up in our firmware archives, just in case you want to manually flash it onto your device.

Overall, this is just yet another reminder of how much ahead Samsung truly is when it comes to conscientious mobile security practices. This whole year is, actually, given how it’s barely been a few months since the company made a historic commitment to deliver at least three generations’ worth of major Android OS upgrades to all of its future devices and my of its existing ones.

November 2020 security patch reaches the Galaxy S10 Lite in Europe

Yet another Samsung smartphone is receiving the November 2020 security patch. This time it’s the Galaxy S10 Lite that has the honors of welcoming the new firmware update. As far as availability is concerned, the Galaxy S10 Lite follows in the footsteps of the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, meaning that the latest update is available only in Spain; at least for the time being.

The latest update for the Galaxy S10 Lite carries firmware version G770FXXS3CTJ3. It doesn’t seem to be bringing any new features to the table so don’t expect your user experience to change in any significant ways once you apply the patch. Some changes will occur under the hood for the purpose of improving your phone’s security but that’s about it.

The November 2020 security patch was detailed by Samsung earlier this week and it fixes a bunch of security flaws found in Android OS and Samsung’s own software. The patch even addresses an Exynos 990 vulnerability but this won’t concern Galaxy S10 Lite owners given that the phone is powered exclusively by the Snapdragon 855 chipset.

As usual, you should be able to download the latest firmware update for the Galaxy S10 Lite in Spain by opening Settings on the phone, accessing Software update, and tapping Download and install. Or you can skip this procedure and apply the latest update manually. To do this, visit our firmware archive, download the latest update for the Galaxy S10 Lite (SM-G770F) in Spain, and install the firmware on your phone using a Windows PC.

If Apple can’t innovate anymore, what’s left for Samsung to copy?

It has taken years for Samsung to get rid of the copycat label. When the industry shifted toward multi-touch devices, many of its designs were said to be too familiar to the iPhone. Apple and Samsung fought costly legal battles for years, with the fruit company claiming that Samsung’s phones infringed on many of its design patents.

This battle captured the public’s imagination as well. A lot of people began subscribing to this notion of Samsung being a copycat. Fans had heated discussions in the comments section of blogs and YouTube videos. Memes derided Samsung for not being innovative enough. It just seemed like Samsung was waiting for Apple to introduce some new feature or tech that it would borrow for one of its own phones six months down the line.

Is that really true now, though? Samsung has switched up the game in the last five years. It has been blazing its own path. Samsung has taken several bold steps for its phones that Apple hasn’t come close to matching. It has advanced material science for mobile devices, explored new form factors and changed the way people think about Samsung phones.

Apple seems to be content with where it’s at with the iPhone. It seems to believe in the notion that when something’s not broken, there’s no need to fix it. The past few iPhones have simply been evolutionary updates. It has cautiously adopted things like multi-camera setups and only just jumped on the 5G bandwagon. Apple favors refinement over revolution for the iPhone.

That’s not a bad thing. This strategy works very well for its business. Apple has built an ecosystem of features and services that’s hard to leave behind once you get used to it. That provides it with a certain level of security against users who might shift from an iOS to an Android device.

If you’re using a Mac and an iPad for work, an Apple Watch for fitness tracking and an Apple TV for entertainment, you’d probably use an iPhone just to make the most of that ecosystem. That’s a big reason why most iPhone users stick with their iPhones. Android users can jump from a Huawei phone to a Pixel to a Samsung without losing out on much. iPhone users don’t have that choice. They’re either in the ecosystem or they’re not.

That’s one of the reasons why Apple can be so cautious with changes to the iPhone. Anticipating slow high-end phone sales and increased competition, the company has gradually been building up its services business over the past few years. The strategy seems to be working. Apple’s revenue from services hit an all-time high of $14.5 billion in Q4 2020.

Over the years, Apple has launched a music streaming service, a TV streaming service, a news subscription and it’s even venturing into game streaming and providing guided workouts. Not only are these services a hedge against that risk, they further lock in users to Apple’s ecosystem.

Samsung doesn’t have that luxury. It needs to be ahead of other Android manufacturers since it faces a greater risk of losing customers to them. So it needs to pull out all the stops. Samsung has been doing that for the past few years. We have seen how it has gone from strength to strength. The company has significantly improved the level of tech in its phones.

It’s also adapting to changing market dynamics quickly. The launch of the Galaxy S20 FE 5G, one of the best Samsung phones in its price range, is proof of that. A $700 5G phone with flagship-like specifications is just what the doctor ordered for 2020.

Samsung is now revolutionizing the industry with the foldable form factor as well. It has released three foldable smartphones so far with each being a testament to its engineering prowess. It has merely been a year since Samsung started releasing foldable phones. The best is certainly yet to come.

There’s no saying if and when we’ll see that level of innovation from Apple. It hasn’t really been doing much beyond iterative updates. Not that there’s anything wrong about that. Apple has built several moats around its business that make it difficult for rivals to steal customers. Ultimately what matters for a business is to have an efficient way of making money. Apple’s ecosystem is helping it do that hand over fist.

Samsung is doing the heavy lifting now. It’s having to think outside the box and move quickly with new technology to maintain its competitive advantage. Its successes over the past few years have indicated how brilliantly it has shed that copycat image. No longer can its devices be seen through the prism of Apple’s inventions. Samsung is on a completely different level now. Onwards and upwards, Samsung!
