Galaxy Gaming: What we are playing in October 2021

It’s mid-October, so the days in the northern hemisphere are getting way colder, way too fast. But at least more time spent indoors means more opportunities for mobile gaming. So, here are the titles we’re playing this month, in order of our most to least played ones.

Monster Hunter Stories

At $20, Monster Hunter Stories is about as premium as mobile gaming gets. This price point is also what kept me away from Capcom’s port for over a year. It’s well above the impulse purchase territory, so if I’m paying it, that’s only if I have time to play it right here and now.

Well, the circumstances aligned just enough for that to happen this month. And all things considered, I’m enjoying my time so far, some 15 hours in. This is a port of a 2016 Nintendo DS game, so mechanically, it’s way more complex than what you’d expect from your average mobile release. It’s also more suitable for playing on the go than the typical Monster Hunter title. Largely on account of being a spin-off with turn-based battles instead of a fast-paced action RPG. Which is a format that’s just about perfect for smartphones and tablets.

Furthermore, the amount of new and varied content the game kept throwing my way quickly dispelled any thoughts about whether I was getting my money’s worth here. The main gameplay loop is like a combination of Pokemon, Jurassic Park, and Dragon Quest. It’s accesssible, addictive, and ever-evolving, constantly challenging your mastery of the game. But never so much so that you can’t brute-force your way through any section with a short level-grinding detour. If that’s what you feel like doing, that is.

All in all, Monster Hunter Stories is a game that’s bound to impress any RPG aficionado; doubly so if they happen to be avid fans of the series. If you’re looking to make a single big-buck purchase likely to keep you entertained for a 100 hours on its own, this would be one of the few games to consider. Not least because it was fairly easy on the battery of my Galaxy Note 10. All that’s missing is controller support, really.

Lastly, if you’re one the fence about getting this, a pretty sizable vertical chunk of the game is available for download free of charge, subtitled “The Adventure Begins”. So that you can spend a couple of hours with Monster Hunter Stories and see how you like the main gameplay loop, no strings attached. It will also let you transfer your save if you do end up buying the whole game in the end.

Broken Sword: Director’s Cut

A timeless point-and-click classic from the golden age of adventure games. Elegantly translated to touchscreens. Witty humor, memorable characters, and all-around sharp writing included. A masterful take on interactive storytelling for the price of a Happy Meal.

If you have never played the original Broken Sword, now is the time to right that wrong. If you have, you know you’ll enjoy another refresher just the same.

Pokemon Unite

By far the freshest release on this list, Pokemon Unite just hit the Play Store a few weeks ago. This is a super accessible MOBA designed for Pokemon fans first and foremost. So, coupled with the fact that it’s free-to-play and not aggressively monetized, it’s definitely worth giving a go if you like either the genre or pocket monsters themselves.

Seeing how the player base is still surging, you should have zero issues finding games within seconds. The only caveat is that you need to be on a decent connection, speed-wise, in order to have the intended gameplay experience.

Overdrive City

I actually stumbled on this old Gameloft release while doing a write-up on last month’s edition of Galaxy Gaming. Namely, I was looking for more mobile racing games bold enough to ditch the impossible task of adapting traditional racing gameplay to a touchscreen in favor of a more refined, linear experience. Overdrive City fits this bill perfectly, and it’s old enough to have evaded the modern era of hyper-aggressive monetization that newer Gameloft titles succumbed to. At the same time, it’s still a regularly updated game. Meaning it takes advantage of tall aspect ratios characteristic of pretty much every smartphone Samsung released in recent years.

This all amounts to a highly enjoyable experience combining racing with some tycoon genre staples such as incremental upgrades and micro-management. All free of charge, unless you’re so into the game that your sessions end up running for over an hour. Overall, Overdrive City is an easy recommendation for all sorts of racing fans.

Is the Galaxy S21 Ultra still worth it? Or should you wait for the S22 Ultra?

The Galaxy S22 Ultra should be three months away, assuming that Samsung will launch the series in January 2022. The phone will succeed the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which, as of this writing, remains one of the best smartphones ever made. But will the Galaxy S22 Ultra make the Galaxy S21 Ultra obsolete a few months from now? And more importantly, is it even worth buying the S21 model at the moment, knowing that the sequel is just around the corner? Or should you wait for the Galaxy S22 Ultra to arrive?

Well, starting with the obvious: no, the Galaxy S21 Ultra won’t be made obsolete by a new flagship. It won’t be rendered useless, but as is the case with yearly upgrades, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should have at least a few key advantages over its predecessor.

Reasons why you should go ahead and buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is tried and tested, and it’s the best Samsung smartphone to date, barring foldables and the Galaxy Note series. It has a fantastic camera with great optical zoom capabilities, and it’s powerful enough to handle virtually any task without difficulties — especially the 16GB model.

The 2021 flagship’s exterior design might also be more appealing, judging by the leaked Galaxy S22 Ultra renders so far. The ongoing model has a camera housing design that works very well for the form factor, but Samsung could change things around again next year, and not for the better.

Another reason is that the Galaxy S21 Ultra is cheaper now than it was at launch. And with the holiday shopping season closing in, customers will be able to find all sorts of attractive Galaxy S21 Ultra deals and discounts, especially since Samsung and its partner retailers know that the sequel is just around the corner. Some stores will want to clear up their inventory, so prospective buyers should have many opportunities to buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year for a much lower price relative to the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s cost at launch.

Finally, if you’re not a fan of the S Pen at all then you might prefer the Galaxy S21 Ultra over the sequel, since the 2021 flagship could be the last in the series to omit a dedicated S Pen slot.

Reasons why you should wait for the Galaxy S22 Ultra

One of the most obvious reasons is the S Pen — assuming you’re a fan. If you plan on using this popular accessory with your flagship phone, the Galaxy S22 Ultra should be the superior choice.

Samsung already brought the S Pen to the Galaxy S21 Ultra earlier this year, but the phone doesn’t have a dedicated S Pen holster. Instead, the accessory needs to be stored inside an S Pen case that Samsung sells separately, and it lacks Bluetooth features.

In contrast, recent leaks indicate that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will fully embrace the S Pen and come with a dedicated holster — which is one of the key characteristics of a Galaxy Note device.

Moving on beyond the S Pen, there are the usual yearly upgrades to look forward to. If you buy the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year, you’ll be missing out on the upcoming Exynos 2200 chipset, which should be considerably more powerful than the ongoing Exynos 2100 solution — in theory, at least. You can never be too certain about a chipset’s performance before release, especially now that the Exynos SoC is backed by AMD graphics. Preliminary performance reports look promising, but AMD has little experience in the mobile game so only time will tell how Samsung’s new chipset pans out. Besides, the Exynos 2200 might not be available in every market.

Finally, a new flagship will ship with a newer OS version, namely Android 12 with One UI 4.0 on top. Of course, the Galaxy S21 Ultra already has access to this firmware — in beta form — so it might run a polished build by the time the Galaxy S22 Ultra goes on sale. In this regard, you could say that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a head-start, particularly if you don’t shy away from beta firmware builds. However, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will ship with this latest OS version from day one, which means it will be supported for longer and receive one extra Android OS upgrade before it reaches end-of-life.

Galaxy S21 Ultra or Galaxy S22 Ultra? What’s the conclusion?

At the end of the day, the Galaxy S21 Ultra remains a great flagship and a safer purchase, at least in some areas. It has a fantastic camera system, a great display, and good performance, all wrapped in an elegant design. If you really need to buy a new flagship this year, you probably won’t regret getting the Galaxy S21 Ultra, especially if you find it at a good discount before the end of 2021.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 Ultra might become the best S Pen-enabled phone once it goes live early next year, and it will certainly deliver better firmware support than its predecessor. It technically should be faster too, and at the end of the day, there’s no telling what other unique features Samsung might have prepared to differentiate its upcoming flagship from the rest of the pack.

If you’d have to buy a flagship within the next few months, would you pick the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year, or would you wait for the Galaxy S22 Ultra to arrive early next year? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Google Pixel is about to become a big threat, so what can Samsung do?

Google is due to launch new Pixel smartphones later this month. There’s a lot of hype around these phones. That has to do with the fact that the new Pixel phones will use Google’s own Tensor chipset.

This is the first time that Google is using an in-house designed chipset for its Pixel smartphones. The company previously sourced them from Qualcomm. Google has worked closely with Samsung on its 5nm Tensor processor. There’s reason to believe that Tensor might actually be an unannounced Samsung Exynos processor.

Be that as it may, Google has made its intentions clear. The company has shifted to in-house designed chipsets for its smartphones because it wants them to be more competitive. The software experience used to be a big reason why people bought Pixel phones before.

They got a vanilla Android experience often with a couple of exclusive features. That and the processing software used for the camera were just about it. There weren’t any big leaps in hardware, design or camera technology to enable the Pixels to take on the flagships from Samsung and other Android OEMs.

Google has done incredible work on artificial intelligence and machine learning. A lot of its other products and services already rely on advanced iterations of these technologies to deliver powerful new experiences. It has leveraged this expertise to make the new Pixel smartphones stand out of the crowd.

It’s no surprise that Tensor is what Google has decided to call its smartphone SoC. The chipset shares its name with the Tensor Processing Units that Google uses in its massive data centers. The company has been keeping the technical details of the Tensor SoC a secret.

It did say that the chip possesses unmatched artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. The most visible impact of this technology will be on voice recognition, image and video processing on the new Pixel smartphones.

Even the best Samsung phones may not be able to match that. Many customers prefer the vanilla Android experience so that’s going to be another concern. Android 12 already has many One UI-inspired features. Samsung has lost the edge there as well since Google’s interface is almost at Samsung’s level.

Google’s Tensor chipset may also have been designed from the ground up to deliver a fully optimized Android experience. By having control over both the hardware and software, Google can make them gel well together. This is a page out of Apple’s playbook. Its products deliver a superior software experience for precisely this reason.

Google’s ownership of Android OS provides it with this edge too. Like other OEMs, Samsung has to abide by Google’s licensing agreement for Android. It can’t tinker with Android the way Google can. That’s always going to be a handicap for companies that make Android smartphones but never for the one that owns the OS.

Samsung was the first Android OEM to promise four years of security updates for its Android smartphones. Google is about to outshine the Korean giant here as well. Reports reveal that with the new Pixel smartphones, Google will guarantee five years of software support. This will put the new devices in a call of their own.

Could this be the start of a big shift in the Android flagship market? Remember, this is Google’s first attempt at a Pixel phone with its own SoC. It’s only going to get better down the line with the company adding more value to its devices.

It’s time for Samsung and other OEMs to seriously start thinking of the Pixel smartphones as a real threat. The question is, what should Samsung do if the Google Pixel becomes the new hype? It might not seem like that right now but might we be looking at a future where Pixel phones account for a big chunk of the flagship Android market?

Flagship phones are a big deal for Samsung. The company fights hard to maintain its lead but when it comes to Google, it goes into the fight with one hand tied behind its back. Samsung can’t dump Android. It has already given up on developing its own smartphone operating system. It’s highly unlikely that Samsung will go down that route again.

Android is also not something that Samsung can buy. The OS is deeply involved with many of Google’s other businesses. There’s no question that Android goes on sale. So where does that leave our favorite Korean company?

This is where it starts to make sense why Samsung has gone all-in on foldables. It chose to cancel the Note series this year and possibly the Galaxy S21 FE just to mainstream the new form factor. The lead that Samsung has already established in this segment keeps it secure for several years. Nobody is at its level right now and that may remain the case for the foreseeable future.

The fact remains like Google, Samsung only earns a tiny fraction of its profits from its smartphone business. The dawn of this new Pixel era is not going to put Samsung out of business. What it might do is force the company to adapt, switch up the playbook and develop new experiences for its devices.

That’s not difficult for Samsung to do. The company has made it clear over the years that it can innovate just like the best of them. It’s not afraid to think out of the box and to make bold moves that are equal parts shock and awe.

The foldables are a key part of Samsung’s strategy. It’s definitely going to stick with them. Samsung’s own AI and machine learning technology has improved significantly over the years. The company can leverage that to unlock new possibilities for its devices.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Google’s new Pixel pushes the entire industry forward. Other Android OEMs wouldn’t want to lose ground to the internet search giant as well. Competition is always good for the industry. It results in better products and services for consumers. That’s something all of us can get behind.

Samsung’s customer support service implements Sign Language Support

Samsung UK announced today a new addition to its Customer Support service, created for deaf or hard-of-hearing customers. The company has teamed up with SignVideo to better serve BSL (British Sign Language) users in the UK. Sign Language Support is now live at Samsung and available for customers every day between 8 AM and 10 PM.

The Sign Language Support service can be accessed by customers who are looking for information on Samsung Galaxy smartphones, TVs, and home appliances. The Korean tech giant’s product portfolio is vast, so the introduction of this new service should be of great help to BSL users who are unfamiliar with the company’s products or want to make an informed purchase decision. According to data from SignVideo, one in seven people in the UK suffer from some form of hearing loss.

The BSL service is now live on Samsung UK’s contact and accessibility webpage. Alternatively, customers can download the SignVideo app and get in touch with a registered BSL interpreter. A webcam is required for two-way communication, of course. Likewise, the service requires a minimum internet speed of 2mbps upload/download. SignVideo can be used on Windows PCs and Apple Macs, Android phones, iOS devices, and of course, the web interface linked above.

In its recent announcement, Samsung said it’s “committed to providing comprehensive accessibility features” and it plans on expanding its offer further next year.

Samsung improves Galaxy Buds 2 stability with new firmware update

The Galaxy Buds 2 earbuds are getting a new firmware update. It’s the first to roll out in the month of October, though the Buds 2 were also updated a couple of times before in September.

The latest update carries firmware version R177XXU0AUI9 and weighs a little under 3MB. It’s not a major release by any means, but according to the short changelog, the update should improve system stability. So, if you ever experienced stability issues while using the Galaxy Buds 2, this latest update might address them. Then again, the last couple of firmware updates had the same changelog.

Samsung began rolling out the new firmware update for the Galaxy Buds 2 in South Korea, though as usual, other markets should follow suit. Galaxy Buds 2 owners can always check if new updates are available via the Wearable app on their connected smartphones or tablets.

The Galaxy Buds 2 arguably are the best wireless earbuds from Samsung. They have a comfortable fit, good sound quality, and great ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) capabilities. They were released for $199, but customers can often buy them for cheaper through limited-time deals. If you want to learn more about the latest wireless earbuds from Samsung, make sure you check our hands-on video and review linked below.

Samsung opens its first online store in Kazakhstan

Samsung is constantly on the prowl to keep its in-store experience on par with a certain fruit-based competitor. Samsung’s Experience stores do a stellar job of highlighting its vast ecosystem of products. In locations where setting one up isn’t feasible, users have to settle for Samsung’s e-store. Kazakhstan is all set to get its first-ever online store in Kazakhstan.

Samsung enthusiasts based in Kazakhstan will be able to purchase a wide range of goods from Samsung.kz, including smartphones, smart TVs, household goods, and more. They can also take advantage of the promotions that Samsung throws in from time to time. Some of the upcoming promotions include free installation of equipment, discounts, gifts, and a loyalty program that will reward frequent customers with even more goodies. Free delivery in the books, too, but only in the city of Almaty. Other cities are expected to follow suit soon.

The presence of a direct-to-consumer store will certainly improve Samsung’s prospects in Kazakhstan. It eliminates middlemen and allows customers to deal with Samsung directly. It will also help Samsung determine how much interest Kazakhstanis have in its products. If things go well, we could even see a Samsung Experience store pop up in the country soon.

Samsung announces BESPOKE Design Contest winners

Samsung’s BESPOKE Design Contest has concluded, and the top-tree winning designs that were picked by the panel of judges will be displayed at the Samsung KX store in London for the remainder of the year.

The competition began earlier this summer and offered contestants a way to showcase their creativity and artworks using BESPOKE refrigerators as canvases. A total of 1,581 designs got submitted by Samsung fans all over the world, so the selection process went through a few stages.

In August, Samsung and the panel of judges picked 50 designs to move forward in the competition. They were displayed on Samsung BESPOKE’s Instagram page, inviting users to join in the fun and vote for their favorite designs. As a result, the list was narrowed down to 15 entries, which were then reviewed by the judges before picking three winners.

Samsung reveals the top-three BESPOKE Design Contest winners

The three winning designs are “Lost Landscape” by Rita Louis, “Foodie” by Weronika Slifierz, and “nestled” by Ioana Sabau.

Lost Landscape combines blue ink and milky white brushstrokes. The design was described by judges as “artistic, light and inspiring.” Meanwhile, the “Foodie” design is meant to express love for good food, and the design was picked thanks to its great use of colors and uplifting illustrations. Finally, the “nestled” design depicts two stylized people leaning in for a kiss. The design was chosen for its colors, scale, symmetry, and abstract beauty.

The three BESPOKE Design Contest winners will have their artworks displayed at the Samsung KX space in London. They’ll also receive prizes ranging from a BESPOKE 2-Door freezer to a Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch, a pair of Galaxy Buds Live earbuds, and a Samsung Solo Microwave Oven.

As Galaxy phones get deeper Material You theming, iOS is losing out

With Android 12, Google introduced a major UI customization feature called Material You. Samsung introduced this feature with the second beta version of One UI 4.0, and people can start customizing their Galaxy smartphones as per their preferred color schemes when the stable version of One UI 4.0 reaches their devices. On iOS, though, Google is taking a step back from the Material design language.

The internet search giant revealed that it will stop using Material design in its iOS apps. Google will start using Apple’s UIKit framework for designing its iOS and iPadOS apps going forward. This switch will result in significantly less work for engineers as they don’t have to create custom codes for UI elements. More importantly, using UIKit will make Google’s apps feel more like iOS apps rather than something weird that doesn’t feel native to Apple’s platform. It could also make Google’s iOS apps faster and easier to navigate.

Jeff Verkoeyen, engineering lead for Google Design on Apple’s platforms, revealed this decision on Twitter. If you are interested in reading more about this decision, you can read the whole thread by clicking on the source link below this article.

Google had unveiled the Material design language in 2014 to unify the look and feel of its apps and services across Android, Chrome OS, iOS, and the web. It was claimed back then that users would feel familiar with its products across platforms. However, seven years down the line, the company found that sticking to those old rules is creating more problems than solving them.

Verkoeyen revealed that switching to UIKit on iOS and iPadOS will “result in much tighter integrations with the OS than what we can reasonably achieve via custom solutions.” It means that future versions of Google’s apps on iOS could use fewer custom buttons that look like they belong on Android but were dragged to an iPhone.

Do you agree with Google’s decision to stop using Material design in its iOS and iPadOS apps?

Samsung opens third Experience Store in Spain, gifts flagship products

Samsung has widened its retail presence in Spain with the inauguration of a new Experience Store. The company announced the grand opening earlier this week. The new store is located on one of the main commercial streets of Barcelona — Avinguda del Portal de l’Àngel — and with an area of 400 square meters, the store includes a dedicated Customer Service area.

More specifically, the new Samsung Experience Store is located on the ground floor of El Corte Inglés, which is the biggest department store chain in Europe — and the third-largest worldwide. The store has a similar look and atmosphere as the other two existing Experience Stores at El Corte Inglés in Bilbao and Valencia.

Giving people new ways to discover Samsung’s ecosystem

The Experience Store was designed to give visitors a preview of Samsung’s latest products, from 5G to Bixby and SmartThings. Of course, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are on display, and so are the new Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatches.

Hardware aside, visitors can also experience some of Samsung’s best apps and services, including Samsung Pay, Samsung DeX, and Samsung Health. The commercial space is dedicated to regular customers as well as businesses.

To commemorate the store’s opening, Samsung has prepared various gifts for customers who visit the store on October 14 starting at 5:00 PM. Gifts include the Galaxy Watch 4, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and other unspecified products and goodies.

Samsung will showcase its smart device ecosystem in a new, interactive format

Outside of its Experience stores, Samsung is constantly looking for ways to show off its products in new and innovative ways. AR has become all the rage due to limited access to physical locations. Now, users will be able to experience a whole range of Samsung products in an entirely new environment thanks to the new ‘Life Unstoppable: House of Surprises’ initiative.

Life Unstoppable: House of Surprises is an interactive movie that follows the stories of multiple characters that showcase Samsung’s range of products. There are six different rooms that highlight the features of a certain product and how they interface with others, essentially highlighting Samsung’s smart home ecosystem.

The first chapter is centered around Samsung’s range of smart refrigerators, followed by Samsung’s Bespoke Jet blender. The next products highlighted are Samsung’s The Premiere projector and Q800 soundbar, after which the Neo QLED TV,  Q950 soundbar, The Serif, and The Frame smart TV make an appearance, along with a Galaxy Z Flip 3 cameo. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor rounds things off, along with the Bespoke AirDressersmrt wardrobe, Bespoke Jet, Jet Bot AI+ robot vacuum cleaners.

Life Unstoppable: ‘house of surprises’ will premier at the dedicated landing page on October 18th at 08:00 BST. Samsung Europe CMO, Benjamin Braun is expected to make a cameo in the presentation, too.

Galaxy M62 gets the October 2021 security update

After releasing the October 2021 security update to mid-range smartphones like the Galaxy A8 (2018), Galaxy A50, Galaxy A52, Galaxy F62, and the Galaxy M30s, Samsung has released the new security patch to the Galaxy M62. The mid-range smartphone is now getting the latest software update in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Galaxy M62’s new software update comes with firmware version M625FXXU2AUI2 and includes the October 2021 security patch. Samsung had mentioned earlier this month that its latest patch fixes more than 60 vulnerabilities in Galaxy smartphones and tablets. While we don’t have an official changelog just yet, the update could also bring general bug fixes and stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy M62 user in any of the markets mentioned above, you can check for the software update by heading to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. If you have experience flashing firmware on Galaxy smartphones, you can also try downloading the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flashing it on your device.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy M62 in Q1 2021 with Android 11-based One UI 3.1 software. The phone is currently listed under its quarterly software update schedule, and it will get at least two major Android OS updates.

Instagram will soon tell you when it’s down so you don’t tear your hair out

Instagram, along with Facebook and WhatsApp, had a major outage recently. Minor outages here and there are common, but this one was huge and knocked out all of Facebook’s big services for many hours. Not everyone knew it was a worldwide outage, though, leading them to think there was an issue only on their end, and it’s something Instagram is trying to address going forward.

Instagram has announced a new feature for its mobile app that will let people know about any technical issues the service might be facing, instead of leaving users to find out from other sources, such as their friends and family or websites such as ours and many others. Instagram says the user’s activity feed will notify them whenever there’s an outage and it determines that it has lead to widespread confusion and questions about what went wrong.

However, this particular feature seems to be geared more towards letting us know when specific aspects of Instagram — such as stories — aren’t working. It won’t be any use when everything is down and Instagram and Facebook have no way to send messages or notifications to their users through the apps, though it’s not like such massive outages are too commonplace anyway.

In any case, the new Instagram-is-out-for-everyone-not-just-you-alert functionality will first be tested in the US for a few months, and if successful, it will be rolled out to other markets in the future. It’s also going to be exclusive to iOS for a while, but the Android release shouldn’t be far off once the feature is ready to go for the masses. Whether or not the Facebook and WhatsApp apps will also get a similar alert system remains to be seen.

New video shows how Samsung tests its foldables for long-term durability

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the world’s first foldable smartphones with a water-resistant design. Both smartphones also feature stronger and more durable hinges and an Armor Aluminum frame. The South Korean firm is trying to make sure that durability-related doubts don’t get in the way of consumers who are thinking of buying the new Galaxy Z series devices.

Now, Samsung has published a new video that shows how it tests the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for long-term durability. The company said that it had to develop new ways to test foldable devices since there is no industry-wide blueprint available right now. The phones go through various stages of durability testing, including environmental chamber, water resistance, S Pen usability, and folding test.

The environmental chamber test checks whether the phones can do basic tasks such as video playback and web browsing in various climates (cold, dry, hot, and humid). The water-resistance test checks whether the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 can withstand being submerged in water in various folding positions.

The S Pen drawing test, which includes a robotic hand, ensures the durability of the digitizer that is placed below the foldable display. It also checks whether the S Pen works on the crease and edges of the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable display. To make sure that its foldable phones live up to 200,000 folds (good enough for 100 folds a day for up to five years), the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 go through a dedicated folding test.

Samsung has a serious problem with its new foldable smartphones

Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, have been very well received. They’ve already broken all sales records for the company’s foldable devices. There still appears to be high demand for these phones.

However, it appears that Samsung has a serious problem on its hands. The company is unable to raise supply to match the demand. It’s an unfortunate position to be in. Samsung wants to mainstream foldables but right now it’s unable to make as many as it needs to.

Samsung just can’t make enough foldables

The global chip shortage has seriously impacted Samsung’s ability to increase production of the new foldables. It’s because of this that the supply of its new foldables is still lagging behind demand.

Samsung has already taken significant steps to work around the chip shortage of its foldables. It didn’t launch new Galaxy Note flagships this year. That was a bold move, benching the star Note lineup for the foldables.

The chip shortage is also the reason why Samsung prioritized the foldables over the Galaxy S21 FE. That device’s launch has also been delayed. It remains unclear if Samsung even plans on launching it at all.

It took Samsung 39 days after launch to sell more than 1 million units of its new foldables in South Korea. Supply is so constrained that some customers are having to wait for up to one month to get their units. Some retailers in Korea aren’t able to sell the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 due to not receiving any inventory.

Local media reports also indicate displeasure over Samsung management’s fault to incorrectly forecast demand for the new foldables. The devices have turned out to be a bigger hit than the company may have been expecting. The sustained demand isn’t just limited to South Korea. It’s being witnessed in other parts of the world as well.

Samsung is leaving money on the table by not having enough units to sell even though customers are waiting with their wallets in hand. Hopefully it will be able to sort this out to realize the full potential of its new foldables.
