Here are the full Samsung Galaxy A90 5G specs

The wait is finally over for Samsung’s first non-flagship 5G smartphone. As the name suggests, the Galaxy A90 5G is that device. Samsung has unveiled the handset today and will start selling it in South Korea starting tomorrow.

With the kind of specs that it has under the hood, this new device seems to be almost encroaching on the flagship tier. One can be sure that the Galaxy A90 5G isn’t going to be cheap by any stretch of the imagination, then again, it’s a 5G smartphone.

Full Galaxy A90 5G specs

You’ll notice the device’s 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display right off the bat. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor under the hood. Samsung will offer this device with 6GB and 8GB RAM options coupled with 128GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot.

Take a look at the graphic down below to check out the full Galaxy A90 5G specs. It comes with a 4,500mAh battery and 25W Super Fast Charging. Some had expected it to feature 45W charging as the Galaxy Note 10+ but that’s not present on the handset.

Samsung hasn’t said as yet when it’s going to bring this handset to other markets where 5G has gone live. The United States is one of them. The Galaxy A90 5G is first going to be released in South Korea tomorrow. Pricing will be confirmed in the very near future.

Galaxy A90 5G is the first A series phone to support Samsung DeX

Even though Samsung has significantly improved its Galaxy A series handsets over the years, there has remained a firm distinction between it and the flagship Galaxy S series. That gap is now coming down a bit though. One feature that has only been present on flagship handsets till now has trickled down to this series.

The Galaxy A90 5G also has some of the swankiest specs that we’ve seen on a handset in this series. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset for example, the preferred option for most flagship Android smartphone manufacturers this year.

Galaxy A90 5G is the first of its series to get 5G and DeX support

It’s the first Galaxy A series device from Samsung to have support for DeX. Samsung’s PC-like environment has been limited to flagship devices so far but the A90 5G will enable users to access that PC-like experience by simply hooking up their monitor to an external display over USB-C.

It does make sense for Samsung to enable support for DeX on this device. Not only does it appear to have the requisite tech under the hood, this feature might also make the Galaxy A90 5G a compelling option for customers in 5G-enabled countries that may also want to get some work done on the move.

The Galaxy A90 5G also gets support for Microsoft’s Your Phone app. It enables users to mirror their phone’s display onto their Windows desktop. They’re also able to check their notifications, send and receive messages, and browse through recent photos on the PC itself.

Samsung is releasing the Galaxy A90 5G in South Korea tomorrow. It will gradually release the device in other 5G-enabled countries down the line.

Galaxy A90 5G goes official with Snapdragon 855 and 48MP camera

A couple of recent leaks had revealed what Samsung’s upcoming device looked like and the company has now announced it officially. The Galaxy A90 5G does indeed exist and it touts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. Yes, this premium mid-range device has the same chipset as the Galaxy Note 10, largely because of 5G compulsions. It also happens to be Samsung’s first non-flagship device to offer support for 5G mobile networks.

The Galaxy A90 5G is the pinnacle of Samsung’s “Era of Live” strategy for its Galaxy A series devices this year. Samsung is targeting the younger, always-connected generation with this series. They will no doubt appreciate a more affordable 5G device that also has other respectable features.

Samsung unveils the Galaxy A90 5G

The design itself is not all that different from other handsets in the Galaxy A series. It was initially rumored that the triple-camera system of this device will be mounted on a rotating slider like the Galaxy A80 but that’s evidently not the case. The Galaxy A90 5G has a separate front-facing camera in addition to the triple-camera at the back. Speaking of the back, the company says that this device has a “unique geometric pattern” on the back glass and will be available in black and white color options.

You’ll find the Snapdragon 855 under the 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display. The chipset is paired with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon x50 5G modem. The device will be available with 6GB and 8GB RAM options with 128GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. There’s a 48-megapixel primary sensor in addition to the 5-megapixel depth and 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensors.

Camera features like Super Steady, Scene Optimizer and Flaw Detector are all present. The 32-megapixel front camera also gets Live Focus mode for bokeh pictures. A 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging will keep the lights on.

Samsung will start selling the Galaxy A90 in South Korea from tomorrow. It will bring the device to other 5G markets in the near future. Pricing will vary by markets.

Dongle or wireless buds: Which are you using with your Galaxy Note 10?

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ may be excellent phones (read our reviews here and here), but they don’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Note 10 and Note 10+ aren’t the first Samsung phones without a headphone jack, but they are the first mainstream offerings, and that makes all the difference. It’s a sign of things to come, and a clear indicator that no matter how much Samsung may have mocked others for doing the same thing, it has now decided to join the enemy instead of continuing to blaze its own path.

Without a 3.5mm port, the only possible solution to use existing audio gear with 3.5mm jacks on the Note 10 and Note 10+ is to buy a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle. One can also switch to wireless earbuds (which is probably what Samsung wants since it sells the Galaxy Buds), or they can use the AKG-tuned USB-C earbuds that Samsung supplies with its new Note flagships or buy third-party USB-C earbuds or headphones. And for our latest poll, here’s a question to our Note 10 and Note 10+-owing readers: Which of those options are you using?

Vote in the poll below, and then tell us more by getting a discussion started down in the comments section!

Galaxy Fold pre-registration is now open in the US

It has been a month since Samsung confirmed that it would finally release the Galaxy Fold in September. The company hasn’t confirmed a release date so far but it won’t be long now before it comes through with that information.

Samsung has opened up pre-registrations for the Galaxy Fold in the United States. That’s just an opportunity for customers to be notified when the handset goes on sale. Remember, pre-registrations aren’t the same as pre-orders.

Samsung opens up Galaxy Fold pre-registration in the US

Samsung had delayed the Galaxy Fold’s launch to make some changes in order to improve the device’s durability. There are new protection caps for the hinge, additional metal layers under the foldable display and other improvements to enhance durability. Samsung says that it has conducted rigorous testing of these changes to ensure that the handset doesn’t run into any problems when customers use it in the real world.

Folks in the United States who are interested in picking one up can head over to Samsung’s website right now and pre-register for the Galaxy Fold. AT&T will be offering it for $1,980, the very same price point that was communicated earlier this year for the April launch. T-Mobile was initially going to carry the device but it has now decided to no longer offer the Galaxy Fold to its customers.

It shouldn’t be long now before Samsung officially confirms when the Galaxy Fold is going to be released. A recent report out of South Korea claims that the company’s first foldable smartphone might finally hit the market on September 6.

Exclusive: Galaxy Watch Active 2 gets ECG and Fall Detection in Q1 2020

It has been a month since the Galaxy Watch Active 2 was officially announced. This is Samsung’s first smartwatch with a touch-sensitive bezel, allowing you to navigate the UI by simply sliding your finger around the bezel. It also gets some great new health features some of which won’t be available at launch.

We exclusively reported earlier this year that the Galaxy Watch Active 2 features include Fall Detection and the ability to take an ECG on your wrist. We can now confirm that both features will be rolled out in the first quarter of next year.

ECG and Fall Detection to be out in Q1 2020

Samsung said last month that ECG and Fall Detection won’t be available at launch because it’s still waiting on approval from the FDA. We hear that the ability to take an ECG and Afib notifications will both be rolled out for users in the United States in February next year.

Fall Detection is going to get a much wider roll out but it’s slated to arrive in the first quarter of 2020. It’s unclear when ECG and Afib notifications will be offered to users in other markets. The rollout will definitely be contingent on local regulations.

There’s a possibility that Samsung might update One UI for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 when it gets ready to release these features. It remains a possibility that the upgraded One UI may include some additional software-based features.

Samsung confirmed last month that the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will be released on September 23 in the United States. Customers in South Korea will be able to pick one up starting this week. It goes on sale in Samsung’s home country on September 6. Do check out our Galaxy Watch Active 2 hands-on in the meantime to learn more about this smartwatch.

Galaxy A20s exposed by China’s regulatory agency TENAA

Just a few days ago another mid-range smartphone from the 2019 Galaxy A lineup received its Bluetooth certificate. The same device bearing the model number SM-A207 has now been spotted in the database of the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA, complete with a handful of live photos and a few specifications.

The model number has been tied to the so-called Galaxy A20s, i.e., the second 2019 model based on the standard Galaxy A20, following the Galaxy A20e. Unlike the latter, the Galaxy A20s is supposed to be an upgrade over the original Galaxy A20, boasting three rear-facing cameras instead of two. The TENAA listing also mentions a generous 6.49-inch display along with a 4,000mAh battery and dual SIM capabilities. The phone’s dimensions clock in at 163.31 x 77.52 x 7.99mm, making it a bit wider and taller than the regular A20.

TENAA doesn’t mention which version of Android OS the Galaxy A20s is running but we can confirm the phone is being tested with Android Pie. We’ll have wait for more details to emerge, but seeing how the smartphone is now picking up the regulatory certificates necessary for its market release, an official announcement shouldn’t be too far into the future.

The real question is whether there’s still a place on the market for yet another Samsung low-to-mid-range smartphone, given that there already are plenty of choices and a new 2020 Galaxy A series is reportedly being developed. Either way, Samsung’s earlier plans to making its budget and mid-range lineups less confusing seem to have been thrown out the window in the second half of 2019, as more spin-offs denoted by the letters “e” and/or “s” have emerged from both the Galaxy A and M series.

Amazon India teases key Galaxy M30s specs and confirms the launch date

It has been known for some time that Samsung is working on a Galaxy M30s. From the leaks and the company’s strategy for the ‘s’ variants in general, it was evident the M30s will be an upgraded version of the existing M30. Amazon India has now confirmed some of the Key Galaxy M30s specs on its website by creating a dedicated page for the upcoming device.

As we reported previously, the Galaxy M30s will sport a mammoth 6000mAh battery, making it the largest Samsung has ever put in one of its smartphones. The Amazon page also hints at a 48-megapixel primary camera, probably the same one found in the A80. The teaser also contains images supposedly captured by the Galaxy M30s, although it doesn’t explicitly say so.

Other than that, Amazon also mentions “a new powerful processor,” which, going by the leaks and the benchmarks so far, appears to be the Exynos 9610 found in devices like the Galaxy A50. A couple of days back, the Galaxy M30s was also spotted on Google’s Android Enterprise devices website, sporting a 6.4-inch display, 4GB RAM, and 64 and 128GB storage options.

The teaser page for the M30s says the device will launch on September 18 at 12 PM. Amazon has been Samsung’s online partner for the Galaxy M series in India. It appears the partnership will continue for the Galaxy M30s as well.

Daily Deal: 35% off this USB-C fast charging cable

USB-C is now the preferred standard for almost all modern smartphones. It’s used for both charging and data-transfer with fast charging often supported. Unfortunately, cables can be finicky and can easily get frayed to the point of breaking. We also tend to carry cables with us since we never know when we might need to charge our devices.

It’s therefore handy to have some extra cables laying around. Think about an extra cable in your living room, bedroom, office and car so you can charge or transfer data anytime you want. At 35% off, this is the perfect time to stock up on USB-C cables and get a couple of extra ones. They also ship to a lot of countries for a little extra so almost everyone should be able to enjoy this deal.

No, the Galaxy Note 10 does not have an IR blaster

Does the Galaxy Note 10 have an IR blaster? That’s a question people are still asking so it makes sense to put this to rest once and for all. Samsung used to include an IR blaster in its flagship smartphones but it stopped doing that several years ago. Early leaks of the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ made it seem like Samsung would bring it back.

A lot has changed since the time we used to get IR blasters in smartphones. There are smarter technologies available now to control consumer electronics like TVs which don’t suffer from range or line-of-sight limitations. An IR blaster would make no sense on a modern smartphone as it would be useless for file transfer as well.

Does the Galaxy Note 10 have an IR blaster?

No, the Galaxy Note 10 does not have an IR blaster. Neither does the Galaxy Note 10+ for that matter. Some early renders of the flagship had given people this false hope. The device does have a small hole on the top right next to the SIM slot. It’s not present on other Samsung devices and its shape reminded people of an IR blaster. Thus the rumor was born and people started hoping that it would come true even though an IR blaster would serve little purpose in this day and age.

galaxy note 10 speaker top

We recently explained in detail exactly what this hole does. It’s not a dedicated speaker and certainly not an IR blaster. It’s simply a hole that allows sound from the earpiece to escape the device. The bezels are so slim that the earpiece grille had to be significantly trimmed. Samsung simply provided another way for the sound to escape the device to retain the same stereo output as its other recent flagships.

One has to wonder why people got so excited about an obsolete technology (IR is still useful in many other industries) for a mobile device. We’re living in an age where everything has to be “smart.” From door locks to doorbells, airconditioners to washing machines to even rice cookers. Everything is connected and can be controlled using voice commands.

Short of the novelty, or juvenility, of sneakily flipping channels on the TV in the doctor’s waiting room, for example, there’s really no use for an IR blaster on a modern smartphone.

[Updated] Samsung releases Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3 and Tab A (2017)

Nearly a year after its official release by Google, Samsung has finally started rolling out the Android Pie update to the Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Tab A (2017). The former is a flagship tablet from 2017, while the latter is a budget device from the same year. Both of them launched with Android Nougat onboard, making the latest release the second and possibly the last major update for these tablets.

Currently, the update for the Tab S3 seems to be rolling out only to the LTE variant in Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. The update for the Tab A, meanwhile, is available only in Malaysia. As is the case with all Galaxy devices, the Android Pie update brings One UI and all its related changes to these devices. You can read our One UI Feature Focus series to learn about all the new features the latest release brings to the table.

Apart from the Android Pie update, the release also brings the August 2019 security patch to the Tab S3. As detailed in the August security bulletin, the latest security patch fixes, among other things, seven critical Android vulnerabilities and 17 Samsung-specific threats. The Tab A (2017), on the other hand, will still be on the June security patch even after the update.

If you haven’t received the update notification on your Galaxy Tab S3 or the Tab A (2017) yet, you can go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option to check for its availability. If that doesn’t trigger the update, you have to either wait for your turn or download the latest firmware for your device from our firmware database and manually flash it. You can find the latest firmware for the Galaxy Tab S3 here and the Tab A (2017) here.

Update – The Android Pie update is now available to the Tab S3 Wi-Fi variant as well. It is currently rolling out only to the users in the UK, but you can expect that to change soon. The SM-T827 LTE version in Turkey is also receiving the same update.

Thanks for the tip, Pjaya!

Galaxy M10s will also have 32GB of internal storage

Samsung is back to its old ways of flooding the market with budget and mid-range smartphones. As if there haven’t been enough of them this year, the company is also planning to launch a Galaxy M10s. It will only feature some minor improvements compared to the Galaxy M10.

The Galaxy M10 is one of the most basic smartphones that Samsung has on the market today. This iterative upgrade would most likely bring a slightly better chipset. It will retain the same amount of internal storage, though.

Galaxy M10s will be another entry-level handset

The Galaxy M10s with model number SM-M107F was recently certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The device also made an appearance on Geekbench. The listing revealed that it’s going to have an Exynos 7885/7904 chipset with 3GB of RAM. That’s the one found in the Galaxy M20 and M30. The Galaxy M10 has an Exynos 7870 chipset. We hear that it will keep the same 32GB of storage as its predecessor.

It won’t be the only Galaxy M series handset to get a refresh this year. Samsung also has the Galaxy M20s and the Galaxy M30s in the pipeline. No word as yet if the battery size will be bumped up on the Galaxy M10s but the other two are expected to be the first Galaxy smartphones with a 6,000mAh battery. So there’s a possibility that the battery may also get a bump on the Galaxy M10s.

Samsung will most likely introduce this device in India first. Given all of the circumstantial evidence that has surfaced so far, it may not be long before the Galaxy M10s goes official.
