[Video] See early Android 9.0 Pie software in action on the Galaxy S9+

An early build of Android 9.0 Pie for the Galaxy S9+ was leaked online earlier this week, offering us a look at some of the changes the new software will bring to Samsung’s 2018 flagship. We already saw the screenshots of Android Pie with the new Samsung Experience 10 UX on the Galaxy S9+, and the folks over at XDA Developers have now released a video showing Pie in action on the device.

Galaxy S9+ Android 9.0 Pie hands-on video

The leaked Android Pie build has a notably different card-based user interface, with even the options in the phone’s settings divided into different cards. On Pie, each subsection of the phone’s settings has the title of that menu at the top, followed by the various options that you can modify. Bixby has an upgraded UI as well, although the functionality reportedly hasn’t changed much. Of course, this is a very early build, so the final Galaxy S9+ Android 9.0 Pie release might be drastically different.

You can check out the video below and, if you have the Snapdragon version of the Galaxy S9+ in the US and are feeling adventurous, you can try out the leaked build yourself. Do tell us what you think about what you’ve seen of Pie on the Galaxy S9+ by voting in our poll.

[Poll] Hey Samsung, stop removing MST from your mid-range phones

The Galaxy A7 went official earlier today as the, er, latest version of the Galaxy A7 in Samsung’s mid-range smartphone lineup. Yes, the name’s confusing, and we here at SamMobile think the new Galaxy A7 is a product of Samsung responding to the competition that it has been facing from Chinese companies like Huawei. Its specs are fairly impressive overall, but there’s a problem with the Galaxy A7, one that we noticed with devices like the Galaxy A6 as well: Samsung seems less keen on implementing MST technology on its devices these days.

Samsung Pay without MST is like an OLED display without vivid colors

The Galaxy A6, Galaxy A6 Plus, the new Galaxy A7, and even the Galaxy Watch don’t have an MST chip. The Galaxy A7 and Galaxy Watch get support for Samsung Pay payments on NFC terminals, but Samsung Pay’s biggest draw has been its ability to work with virtually any payment terminal or card machine in the world. It’s especially important in growing markets like India, where NFC-enabled payment terminals are hard to come by. And even in other markets, it makes Samsung Pay far less useful if it only works over NFC.

Whether Samsung will be doing this over the long-term (not equipping any but the top mid-range and flagship devices with MST) or not remains to be seen. We certainly don’t like it that you can’t make MST payments over a device called the Galaxy A7 when the previous device of the same name could (or have no water resistance, as pointed out by one of our readers), and we’d like to know what you think about it.

Do you use Samsung Pay with standard payment terminals and card machines often and think MST support is important for Samsung Pay? Or do you think it’s high time the world started moving towards NFC payment and that the lack of MST support on a Samsung device isn’t that big a deal?

Let us know by voting in the poll below, then expand on your thoughts down in the comments section.

Do you think MST is important for Samsung Pay?

Samsung’s first serious response to Huawei and Chinese competitors is promising

Samsung has been finding it increasingly difficult to compete with its Chinese rivals. It’s struggling in the affordable and mid-range segments of the market. Their sheer dominance has eroded the company’s market share in China, the world’s most lucrative mobile market. It also threatens Samsung’s lead in the Indian market to which the Korean giant attaches due importance. Samsung has realized that its brand value alone won’t cut it. It has to focus more on this segment of the market.

The company has likely been working on revamping its strategy for this segment for quite some time. It finally revealed what it intends to do now in order to better compete against the Chinese. DJ Koh, the CEO of Samsung’s mobile division, said two weeks ago that the company will now be packing more technology in its mid-range devices to appeal to the vast majority of customers that don’t buy a flagship.

This meant that the company would now introduce new technologies even before they’re brought to the flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. New tech used to trickle down from those lineups previously. Two weeks after Koh revealed the strategy, Samsung launched its first smartphone with a triple camera system today.

Samsung vs Huawei: The Korean giant hits back

It was believed for the longest time that the Galaxy S10 would be Samsung’s first smartphone with a triple camera system at the back. It made perfect sense. The Galaxy S10 will be Samsung’s 10th anniversary flagship. It’s almost certainly going to bring major improvements. Samsung will ship that phone with three cameras that’s for sure. However, it’s no longer conceding space to its rivals by making its fans wait. If you’re a Samsung fan and you want a triple camera smartphone you will soon be able to purchase the new Galaxy A7.

The company is going to do something similar for the in-display fingerprint sensor as well. We have heard rumors every year for the flagship devices over the past couple of years that the upcoming high-end device will bring an in-display fingerprint sensor. Samsung is yet to do that. Even though some of its Chinese rivals have already been selling phones with display-based fingerprint sensors. Reports suggest that Samsung will likely launch a new smartphone with an in-display sensor a few months before the Galaxy S10 arrives with one.

Samsung is clearly reacting to the competition as it runs the risk of being left behind. Chinese manufacturers, particularly Huawei and its sub-brand Honor, have achieved milestones at an astonishing pace and at Samsung’s expense to some extent. It has captured the market’s attention with advancements in camera hardware, adopting new technologies and even new gradient colors which Samsung is also responding to now in China. Huawei is one of the fastest growing mobile brands on the planet. That’s despite the fact that it’s essentially non-existent in North America.

Soon after reports surfaced that Huawei is looking to launch a foldable smartphone before the end of the year, Samsung came out and acknowledged that it is indeed developing its long-rumored foldable smartphone. It also expressed its wish to be the company that launches the world’s first proper foldable smartphone. Samsung is now going to unveil the device at its annual developers’ conference in November even if it doesn’t end up shipping the device this year.

Evidently, it’s keeping a close eye on the likes of Huawei. Samsung is responding to ensure that the Chinese behemoth doesn’t challenge its dominance in the global smartphone market. Samsung fans have long been waiting to see this kind of response from the company.  It hasn’t really reacted to these developments in the past few years. To some, it felt that Samsung was simply resting on its laurels while the Chinese were dictating where the smartphone market was to go.

The new Galaxy A7 is the first salvo from Samsung in this tussle. The triple camera system is the handset’s biggest feature and that’s what customers will buy it for. If this wasn’t enough, Samsung has also developed a four camera smartphone which it will announce on October 11. It will then show off its foldable smartphone in the following month. Thus the news cycle this fall will prominently feature Samsung’s new and innovative products. They will be poles apart from what we have seen from the company in recent months. There are even reports that Samsung is looking to further cut its margins on affordable devices to be competitive on price as well.

Its Chinese rivals have also been playing up the integration of artificial intelligence in their camera software. They claim it provides a smarter imaging experience. Samsung has responded on this front as well. The Scene Optimizer that it launched with the Galaxy Note 9 has been released for the Galaxy A8 Star as well. The new Galaxy A7 also gets the Scene Optimizer. This smart feature automatically categorizes the subject of the image. It then adjusts the contrast, color and brightness on its own for better image quality.

Features like AR Emoji which were previously limited to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 have been rolled out for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8 as well. It goes to show that Samsung is attaching renewed importance to the camera experience on its devices, mid-range and flagship alike.

This is all very promising. Samsung has clearly recognized the threat. It doesn’t really come from Apple in the high-end segment. As far as its smartphones are concerned Apple is now headed in another direction entirely. Moreover, the flagship smartphones that Samsung makes are more than capable of holding their own against the iPhones.

Samsung’s dominance of the market has been built on its mid-range and entry-level devices. It certainly needs to keep this up and also has to be competitive on price going forward. That is key to taking on its Chinese rivals head on. They have almost perfected the art of selling smartphones packed with technology at really aggressive price points.

I just hope it’s not too little and too late, for Samsung’s sake.

Specs comparison: Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A7 (2017)

Samsung launched the Galaxy A7 (2017) in January last year so it has been almost two years since this device was released. This was a significant update for the Galaxy A series at that time. It had a metal frame and 3D glass back. It clearly took inspiration from Samsung’s more premium offerings such as the Galaxy S7.

A lot has changed for Samsung’s Galaxy A series since then. The company has now brought its Infinity Display to mid-range devices. The new Galaxy A7 gets it as well. Users upgrading from its predecessor will be pleasantly surprised.

Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A7 (2017) specs comparison

The new Galaxy A7 has a larger 6-inch FHD+ display as opposed to its predecessor’s 5.7-inch FHD display. It also has a faster processor in addition to more RAM and storage. The camera department is where the new Galaxy A7 also stands tall. Its predecessor has a single 16-megapixel f/1.9 aperture rear camera whereas this device has Samsung’s first triple camera system. It does have a slightly smaller 3,300mAh battery compared to the Galaxy A7 (2017)’s 3,600mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A7 price confirmed, to go on sale soon

Samsung announced the launch of the Galaxy A7 earlier today. It’s the company’s first smartphone with a triple camera system at the back. There has been a lot of hype for this device in the days leading up to its launch. Samsung has never made a triple camera smartphone before so naturally, many are interested in seeing just how good of a job it has done.

The company mentioned in the press release that this device will be available in select markets across Europe and Asia this fall. It will be offered in blue, black, gold and pink colors. The price of this handset has now been officially confirmed to us.

Samsung Galaxy A7 price

The main specs of the Galaxy A7 are quite similar an existing device as our Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A8+ (2018) specs comparison shows. The rear triple camera is the main difference between these devices. The Galaxy A7 has a 24-megapixel primary lens with f/1.7 aperture.

It’s coupled with an 8-megapixel Ultra-Wide lens with f/2.4 aperture. Samsung says that it has aa 120-degree viewing angle which is the “same viewing angle as the human eye.” The third camera is a 5-megapixel f/2.2 aperture depth sensor.

There’s a 24-megapixel camera upfront as well for selfies with f/2.0 aperture and an adjustable LED flash. The camera hardware does look promising on paper. However, only real world tests will show if they’re any good at what they’re supposed to do. A higher number of sensors does not automatically equal better performance after all.

Customers in select Asian and European markets will be able to purchase this device in the near future thereafter Samsung will release the handset in other markets down the road. It has confirmed to us that the Samsung Galaxy A7 price is 350 euro which is around $410. That’s going to be the price range for this handset in other markets as well.

Specs comparison: Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A8+ (2018)

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A7 earlier today. It’s the company’s first smartphone with a triple camera system at the back. It was rumored prior to its launch that this handset’s specs would be largely similar to that of the Galaxy A8+ (2018). That does appear to be the case as this Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A8+ (2018) will show you.

Galaxy A7 vs Galaxy A8+ (2018) specs comparison

There are quite a few similarities between these devices. They feature the same 6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display and the Exynos 7885 Octa 2.2GHz processor. The Galaxy A7 will also be available with 4GB and 6GB of RAM.

The main difference is obviously the rear camera. The Galaxy A8+ has a single 16-megapixel f/1.7 aperture camera at the back. The Galaxy A7 boasts a triple camera system, Samsung’s first. There’s a primary 24-megapixel lens with autofocus and f/1.7 aperture, an 8-megapixel 120° Ultra Wide Lens with the same viewing angle as the human eye and a 5-megapixel Depth Lens. They’re backed up by Samsung’s Scene Optimizer. It categorizes the subject and adjusts color, contrast and brightness automatically to improve image quality.

The Galaxy A7 will be available with up to 128GB of storage against the Galaxy A8+ (2018)’s 64GB. It also supports microSD cards of up to 512GB. It loses out slightly in the battery department as it has a 3,300mAh battery compared to the 3,500mAh battery in the Galaxy A8+ (2018).
