Stainless steel on Galaxy Note 10? Samsung now says it’s metal

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ do not have a stainless steel frame. When Samsung first published the Galaxy Note 10 introduction video, it talked about how “stainless steel and glass meld seamlessly to minimize bezel” on the new flagships, but it has now uploaded an updated video that makes no mention of stainless steel.

And it seems someone in the marketing team didn’t get the memo that they’d be updating that video, as the older video is still online on YouTube. It’s not just the official introduction video that talked about the stainless steel. It was also mentioned on the Galaxy Note 10 website, and Samsung has now replaced “high-polish stainless steel” with “high-polish metal.” Nothing else seems to have changed, thankfully, so there’s probably no need to worry that some other advertised features may not be available, either.

Or at least we hope there isn’t. The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are already under fire from longtime Galaxy Note fans for stripping features like a headphone jack and then giving unsatisfactory reasons for doing so. The Korean giant also took down some of its ads mocking Apple about forcing dongles and notches on iPhone customers, something Samsung itself is guilty of doing with this year’s flagship devices.

Check out the old and new videos below and tell us in the comments whether you’re okay with having an aluminum frame on the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ or if you would have liked to see stainless steel as Samsung had incorrectly touted earlier.

[Poll] Are you going to buy the Galaxy Note 10 or Note 10+?

Samsung pulled a 1-2 punch this year with the Galaxy Note 10 series. It consists of two models instead of the usual one, and customers who are thinking of upgrading from a previous flagship model are now faced with multiple choices. Should you buy the Galaxy Note 10 or the Galaxy Note 10+? Should you pre-order them, buy them later at a reduced price, or skip them altogether?

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are very similar yet still quite different. Aside from the fact that the Galaxy Note 10+ has a larger screen with a higher resolution, it also has an additional ToF camera and expandable storage. The standard Galaxy Note 10 is available only with 256GB of non-expandable storage, and both models lack a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

There are plenty of reasons to want and pre-order/buy one of the two Galaxy Note 10 models, now or later at a future discount. Likewise, there are reasons to consider not upgrading if you already own a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Note 9. It depends on your budget and expectations, but whichever they may be, we’d like to hear from you.

We’ve prepared a new poll so feel free to take a vote and join us in the comment section below. You can also participate in another poll and tell us which Galaxy Note 10 color you like the most.

Samsung to unveil new (high-res) ISOCELL camera sensor next week

Samsung is gearing up for the announcement of a new ISOCELL camera sensor for mobile devices. The event was confirmed via Twitter along with the hashtag #NextGenCapture so we’re assuming that the company has something big in store for its fans.

The upcoming sensor will be unveiled on Monday, August 12. Since the company’s final flagship phone of the year was announced just a couple of days ago, we’re assuming that the upcoming sensor will either be employed by the next generation of flagships or the next generation of mid-range phones. In other words, the Galaxy Note 10 uses the same S5K2L4 main sensor as the Galaxy S10 series, but the upcoming ISOCELL sensor could be used by the 2020 Galaxy S11 or Galaxy A lineups.

The next ISOCELL sensor might have a much higher resolution

While Samsung has yet to reveal any technical details regarding the new camera sensor, the early promotional material might provide some hints. Particularly, the headline “Resolution Redefined” strongly suggests that the upcoming ISOCELL model will have a considerably higher resolution compared to other ongoing sensors. Then again, it could also mean that the pixel arrangement or pixel grid is going to be different.

In recent years, the competition for the highest pixel count has died off as more OEMs began emphasizing the importance of low light photography. However, recent rumors and events throughout the industry suggest that OEMs might get back into the race for high pixel count once again.

We don’t yet know if it’s a flagship-grade or mid-range sensor

It’s unclear whether Samsung will want to jump on the pixel bandwagon as far as the Galaxy S11 is concerned, but the company did announce the ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor earlier this year. It has a resolution of 64 megapixels and is expected to be used by Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi. The Bright GW1 has a resolution higher than any other sensor employed by Samsung’s own flagship phones.

We’ve previously discussed why we think Samsung’s 2020 flagship should elevate the mobile camera game to new heights, as pressure is mounting up from competitors in China. But only time will tell if the ISOCELL sensor set to be unveiled next week will play a role in this.

If not, then the sensor could be reserved for the mid-range market where Samsung has plenty of devices to offer. The Galaxy A series will likely get a handful of models next year, and the race for a higher pixel count might be more appropriate for this market segment. On the other hand, the aforementioned ISOCELL Bright GW1 is another contender for the Galaxy A (2020) series, and this only leaves us wondering where the upcoming ISOCELL will fit into the picture.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as Samsung reveals more about the upcoming module. Until then, join us in the comment section and let us know what you desire the most out of the company’s next mobile camera sensor.

You can now pre-order Galaxy Note 10 accessories in some markets

The Galaxy Note 10 series introduced earlier this week will be accompanied by a wide range of optional accessories, from different covers to the USB-C 3.5mm headphone jack adapter. Most of these accessories are now available for pre-order in some countries, including the United States and the Netherlands.

Accessories for fast charging, USB Type-C adapters, and more

The Galaxy Note 10 comes with 25W fast charging while the Galaxy Note 10+ takes advantage of 45W. However, the latter model is paired with a 25W charger in the box, so to use the full 45W charging capacity you’ll have to buy the 45W USB C charger separately. It can be pre-purchased for $49.99 in the US and € 50.82 in the Netherlands.

Likewise, the 15W wireless charger stand is now available for pre-order in the US for $79.99 while Samsung Netherlands sells the device for € 81.07.

Meanwhile, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable — which is what the Note 10’s official super fast chargers (both 25W and 45W) use — costs $14.99 in the US but it’s missing from Samsung’s e-shop in the Netherlands. And lastly, you can get a USB-C 3.5mm headphone jack adapter for $14.99 and € 10.89. It doesn’t seem to be included for free, after all, or at the very least it’s not going to be offered for free in every market.

Galaxy Note 10 covers

The Galaxy Note 10 series will be compatible with a handful of protective cover designs, ranging from simple silicone covers starting at $22.99 (€ 29.99) to the more intricate LED Wallet Cover for $64.99.

There’s also a new S-View Flip Cover which comes with a stripe of plastic/glass offering notifications at a glance through the Always On Display functionality. It costs $49.99 or € 54.99.

Check out Samsung US and Samsung Netherlands for the full list of Galaxy Note 10 accessories available so far. If you find that the list is not complete or identical across the board, keep in mind that the products have barely been introduced on pre-order terms. Availability will continue to expand to other markets.

Galaxy S9 and newer could get the new DeX features with One UI 2.0

The Galaxy Note 10 series takes advantage of new DeX features that allow users to connect the flagship to a PC and easily transfer files between the different platforms. Now, according to a new rumor passed along via Twitter, the same DeX functionalities will eventually be made available for the Galaxy S9 and newer flagships.

Reportedly, the updated DeX features will be launched on the Galaxy S9 and newer flagship models along with the Android Q update. We’ve exclusively revealed last month that Android Q will mark the release of One UI 2.0 for Samsung, and this will happen prior to One UI 2.1 being released along with the Galaxy S11 next year.

Other Galaxy Note 10 features could launch for older flagships with One UI 2.0

Samsung’s strategy to update older flagships with newer features is not new. And if this rumor turns out to be true then the updated DeX might not be the only Galaxy Note 10-specific feature that will eventually make its way onto older devices like the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S9 series. That is, as long as the hardware supports said features. Things like AR Doodle which are more dependent on the S Pen and ToF camera might not make it onto the Galaxy S9 series, but others could.

These types of retrograde feature updates usually happen when major software versions are being released, so we’ll likely have to wait until Android Q and One UI 2.0 arrives. Case in point, the Galaxy S9 got the ability to run DeX directly through a USB connection — introduced on the Galaxy Note 9 — without requiring the special dock when it got Android 9 Pie.

What other Galaxy Note 10 features would you like to see making their way onto older flagships? Let us know in the comment section.

[Poll Results!] Will Galaxy Note 10’s 256GB storage make you care less about the microSD slot?

When we asked our readers if they’d skip the Galaxy Note 10 if it has no microSD slot in a poll a month ago, we saw more than 50 percent voters respond in the affirmative. We published that poll just a couple of days after the first rumor about the possibility of the regular Galaxy Note 10 lacking expandable storage came out, and recent leaks and reports have pretty much sealed the deal on that front. Yes, Samsung is yet to make the Galaxy Note 10 official. Still, it does seem the microSD slot is going away, along with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

256GB base storage a good way to make up for no microSD slot?

Not all is lost, however: It’s said that both the Note 10 and Note 10+ will have 256GB of storage on the base variant. We had discovered signs of a 128GB model a few months ago, but it doesn’t look like that storage variant is on the cards anymore. Samsung has always taken the lead in the smartphone industry when it comes to equipping its flagship smartphones with higher base storage – the company made the switch to 128GB of base storage with the Galaxy Note 9, and it’s not hard to believe it is doubling that with the Galaxy Note 10.

Perhaps Samsung wouldn’t have done it if it hadn’t decided not to put a microSD slot on the smaller Galaxy Note 10 and make it more of a Galaxy-S10-with-S-Pen Note than a proper powerhouse. But it did, and the higher out-of-the-box storage means not everyone will need to use a microSD card. Which brings us to the question we’re asking today: Would the 256GB of base storage make you care less about not having a microSD slot on the Galaxy Note 10?

Vote in the poll below, then take to the comments section to discuss your thoughts on the matter and get a conversation started!

Results: The highest percentage (39 percent) of voters said they would still need a microSD slot, although almost as many folks (35 percent) said they think 256GB storage is good enough. 17 percent of voters believe they should have the option to expand storage if they are paying so much for a smartphone, while 8 percent of voters say they are okay with even 128GB of storage without a microSD slot. The remaining 2 percent would be fine with the smaller Note 10’s lack of microSD expansion if the Note 10+ didn’t have a microSD slot, either.

Samsung has removed some of its old ads that mocked Apple

Over the years, Samsung has attacked Apple’s iPhones on many occasions through its ad campaigns. Some of the recent attacks centered on iPhones’ notch design and removal of the headphone jack. The Korean company was able to do this as its older flagships had a notch-free design and came with a headphone jack.

However, Samsung lost those bragging rights this year as it launched flagship devices with hole-punch displays to cut down the bezels. With the launch of the Galaxy Note 10, the company also started ditching the headphone jack and the microSD slot. Even the soon-to-be-released Galaxy Fold comes with a big notch on the inside and lacks a headphone jack.

Samsung no longer has the bragging rights

Now that Samsung can no longer mock Apple on these issues, it removed some of the older attack ads from its YouTube channel in the US. Most of these adverts are from the Galaxy S9’s ‘Ingenius’ ad campaign that attacked iPhone X’s dongle life, slower download speeds, lower DxOMark scores, and more. Interestingly, Samsung has removed even those ads that are not related to a notch or the headphone jack. Apart from the ‘ingenious’ ads, the Korean company’s famous ‘Growing up’ ad from 2017 has also disappeared from its YouTube channel.

Of course, it’s not just Samsung, even Apple retracted some of its old ads mocking the big-screen phones once it launched the iPhone 6/6+. Interestingly, in both these cases, removing the ads brought more attention to them due to what is known as the Streisand Effect. Though these ads are missing from the official channels, you can still find them easily online.

Galaxy A20, A30, J5 Prime, and more get August security patch

Samsung has been aggressively pushing out the August 2019 security patch to more and more devices every day. Not just for the flagships, the company has released the latest monthly update to many budget and midrange devices as well. These include the Galaxy A20, A30, A6+, J4+ and the J5 Prime in the last couple of days.

Among these devices, the Galaxy A30 and A6+ are receiving the update only in Brazil as of now, while the Galaxy J4+ is getting it in Turkey and A30 in India. The update for the J5 Prime, meanwhile, is available in multiple markets such as Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Russia.

From what we can gather, the release seems to bring nothing more than the latest security fixes to these devices. And that’s not such a bad thing as all these devices, barring the J5 Prime, are already running Android 9 Pie with One UI on top. According to Samsung’s security bulletin, the August SMR (Security Maintenance Release) includes patches for seven critical and plenty of high-risk Android vulnerabilities and 17 more of varying severities that affect only Galaxy devices.

If you own any of these devices but haven’t received the update yet, you can go to the Settings app, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option to trigger the update. If that doesn’t work, you can consider downloading the latest firmware for your device from our firmware database and manually flash it. You can access the latest firmware for the Galaxy A20 here, A30 here, A6+ here, J4+ here, and the J5 Prime here.

Photo confirms massive 6,000 mAh battery coming to Samsung phones

An image from a South Korean test lab confirms recent rumors about a Samsung device packing a 6000 mAh battery. The alleged Galaxy M20s will apparently outdo the battery of the original Galaxy M20 by quite a margin.

Galaxy M20s with 6,000 mAh battery confirmed

Some time ago, the first rumors surfaced about a Galaxy M20s with a battery that surpasses even the M20’s large 5,000 mAh cell. Now, GalaxyClub points to a photo that emerged from the belly of South Korea’s testing facilities, confirming the earlier mentioned information. Pictured is a Samsung battery with product code EB-BM207ABY, which logically belongs to a device with model number SM-M207F.

Despite the rather crappy quality, one number can be made out more or less clearly: the 22.45 Wh capacity. Given that phones operate at 3.85 Volt, a quick calculation gives us the capacity in mAh: 5,831. Mind you, this is the battery’s rated capacity. The typical capacity is not very legible but seems to be a round number. A 6,000 mAh typical capacity fits both the image and the confirmed rated capacity.

Aside from the battery information, not a lot is known about the Galaxy M20s (SM-M207F). We could guess it might arrive alongside the Galaxy M30s, but that still leaves us with no idea when the device will launch, and where. Still, Samsung seems committed to offering bigger batteries in affordable phones, which is not something anyone will object to. 2019 is proving a busy year with many devices launched, and it does not look like Samsung is slowing down anytime soon.

Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy Note 9 get August security update

There’s a new Galaxy Note flagship in town, but it doesn’t mean older devices in the lineup are going to be forgotten, as Samsung is proving by rolling out the August security update to the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Note 8 on the same day. Oddly enough, both devices are getting the update in mostly the same countries, which is not something that happens often.

The Galaxy Note 9 update is out in Switzerland, Romania, France, Poland, Bulgaria, the Baltic states, and Greece and comes with software version N960FXXS3CSG5. The Note 8 update is out in France, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, and Italy and bumps the software version up to N950FXXS7DSH1. The updates are likely to have only the new security patch to offer, as indicated by the S after ‘XX’ in the build numbers (when there are other changes or new features onboard, the S is usually replaced by a U).

If you own either a Note 9 or Note 8, you can open the Settings app on the device, navigate to Software update, then select the Download and install option to manually download the update over the air. You can also upgrade by flashing the firmware for the new update using a Windows PC – you can download the latest firmware for both devices from our firmware database (Note 8 | Note 9).
