Samsung Music update brings Android 8.0 Oreo support

Samsung is gradually updating some of its apps with support for Android 8.0 Oreo. This means that these apps will be compatible with the Android 8.0 Oreo update the day that it’s released for all users. Samsung has released a new update for Samsung Music today and the app has also received support for Android 8.0 Oreo.

Samsung Music supports Oreo

The Smart Switch app was one of the first Samsung apps to be updated with Oreo support two months ago. It was even before the Android 8.0 Oreo open beta program was launched for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Samsung Connect was next in line and it also received support two months back. Samsung VR was updated just two weeks ago with support for Oreo as well as Samsung’s new Galaxy A8 (2018) handsets.

The Samsung Music update rolling out today weighs in at just over 26MB. It bumps up the version number to 16.2.08.22. Aside from Android 8.0 Oreo support, it adds an alphabet scroll index, shuffle play and brings the ability to turn off the edge light on supported models.

The update is rolling out now via Galaxy Apps so you can get it right away. Still no word from Samsung about when it’s going to release Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to the public.

Galaxy J2 (2018) accessories spotted on Samsung’s website

The Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) has shown up in the accessories section of Samsung’s own website, although the device itself has yet to be announced. This reiterates recent reports that Samsung will soon announce the Galaxy J2 (2018).

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) accessories

The product page mentions that the Jelly Cove Cover is soft to the touch and lightweight, enabling it to conform nicely to the device’s shape. The cover will be available in Black, Coral Blue, Gold, and Pink colors, meaning that those will likely be the color options that the handset is offered in.

The Dual Layer Cover is just that; a dual layer cover for a bit more protection than the Jelly Cove Cover. It has a rigid outer shell that protects from bumps, and a soft inner coating that provides excellent cushioning. The same color options will be available for this case as well. This case weighs 28.9g as opposed to the Jelly Cove Cover which weighs 17.3g.

These two covers appear to be the only two accessories for this handset right now. It’s possible that there might be others but they’ve not been listed on the website as yet. It’s unclear when the Galaxy J2 (2018) is going to be unveiled.

The expected price of the Galaxy J2 (2018) recently surfaced in a retail listing. The handset is expected to cost around $140 when it’s released.

Which case would you purchase if you had the J2 (2018)? Let us know below.

Galaxy S8 inadvertent screen wakeup leading to battery drain

The Galaxy S8 is experiencing inadvertent screen wakeup which in turn is leading to battery drain. Numerous users from the official Samsung community, as well as Reddit have posted videos including a detailed description of exactly what it going on. At first the issue seemed to only affect the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but there have been a few cases of the issue plaguing Note 8 users, as well.

Inadvertent screen wake up draining battery

The issue seems to arise once a user has turned the screen off like normal via the power button or screen timeout. At that point, the screen turns back on showing the lock screen; it stays lit for about 10 seconds or so, and repeats the process. As you can imagine, this constantly happening throughout the day, will definitely lead to significant battery drain. Using the flip cover case that Samsung makes does not make a difference, the screen is still waking up with the flip cover closed.

Users have claimed to factory reset the device, reboot in safe mode, and wipe the cache partition hoping to resolve the issue, but to no avail; the issue persists.

It might be because of Bixby or because of something else entirely. It’s not known for sure at this point in time and the fact that Samsung has yet to acknowledge the situation doesn’t help. Needless to say, the screen is only turning on to the lock screen and not unlocking the device.

Have you experienced this as well? Let us know in the comments below.

Alleged Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ screen protectors appear online

A Weibo user has posted what appear to be the screen protectors for the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The screen protectors for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have also been posted next to these images to give us an idea of how the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ might look.

Alleged Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ screen protectors

From these images and numerous other leaks, it is evident that the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will not be dramatically different from the current Galaxy S8 and S8+. To be fair to Samsung, with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung already pushed the envelope on smartphone design. It is doubtful the design of Samsung flagship phones will change much until the next flagship that’s due in 2019.

In the leaked images, we can see sensor cutouts for the earpiece, camera, iris scanner, etc. There doesn’t seem to be any iPhone X-like notch in the soon to be launched Samsung flagships despite reports of new hardware to improve facial recognition. Apart from that, these alleged screen protectors for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ doesn’t reveal much about the yet to announced devices.

Recently, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were spotted at the FCC. With all the talk of Samsung bringing the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ early to the market to counter iPhone X sales, we won’t be surprised if the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are announced earlier than the usual schedule, possibly at the MWC 2018 in February.

[Poll] Is the Galaxy Note 8 battery charging issue also present on low-end devices?

Reports about some Galaxy Note 8 units dying after the battery was fully drained surfaced last week. The handset just wouldn’t turn on no matter how long it was left plugged in, and wireless charging didn’t help. Samsung has since acknowledged the issue that some Galaxy S8+ owners have experienced as well, but the company hasn’t explained what’s causing this.

The reports largely came from users with US carrier variants of the Galaxy Note 8, suggesting the issue is limited to the Snapdragon-powered variant. Samsung has offered those customers replacement units under warranty.

Is there more to this than meets the eye?

There haven’t been any reports about Samsung’s low-end or mid-range devices facing this issue. One of our low-end devices has exhibited similar behavior in the recent past, though. It’s a Galaxy A3 (2017). The device wouldn’t turn on after the battery was completely drained one day.

This happened before the holiday season and before reports about the Galaxy Note 8 dying after a full discharge came in. Samsung normally treats charging errors as the customers’ responsibility so in most cases they’re told to pay for the repair service.

We were initially told that it was a USB-C failure. The unit hasn’t come back as yet, so there are no details as yet about the work that was done to fix the problem. Samsung doesn’t usually fix these issues under warranty, but we were able to get it done for free by quoting recent reports about the Note 8. Others might not have been so lucky, though, especially if they ran into such a problem a few months earlier.

Have you experienced a similar issue with a low-end or mid-range Samsung device? There haven’t been any reports as yet, but that’s not surprising. Samsung sells more premium (and budget) handsets compared to mid-range ones, which is probably why the issue has first been reported by some Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8+ users. Flagship phones also have a lot more going on under the hood, making such problems more likely.

Let us know if you’ve experienced something like this by voting in the poll. Also let us know what device it was and whether you got the issue fixed under warranty in the comments section.

Premium TV shipments will surge in 2018 with Samsung in the lead

Industry data shows that the global market for premium TVs sized 75-inches and larger is going to increase sharply in 2018. Samsung is expected to lead the surge which means that its bet on large premium televisions is going to pay dividends for the company.

Industry tracker IHS Markit has compiled data which shows that the global sales of premium TVs sized 75-inches and larger is going to hit 1.69 million units in 2018. This means that shipments will sharply rise from the 1.15 million units estimated for 2017.

Leading premium TV shipments in 2018

The demand for big premium TVs is not likely going to peak this year. It’s expected to surge in the coming years as well, possibly reaching over 3.3 million units in 2020. Samsung has been focusing on big premium TVs and its strategy seems to be effective.

It’s estimated to have sold 151,800 units of TVs 75-inches and larger in the third quarter of 2017. Large premium TVs have accounted for 8.1 percent of Samsung’s combined TV sales in Q3 2017. That’s up from 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2017. Sony managed to sell 79,700 units while LG was only able to move 34,900 units according to the data compiled by IHS Markit.

Samsung is going to unveil new premium TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018. It won’t be surprising if we see new large premium models from the company next week.

Samsung C-Lab to showcase three new projects at CES 2018

Samsung has announced today that they will showcase three new C-Lab projects and commercial products from seven C-Lab spin-offs at this year’s CES. The three new C-Lab projects are S-Ray, GoBreath, and Relumino.

The company launched its Creative Lab or C-Lab innovation program in 2016. The program lets Samsung employees develop their business ideas into products. Samsung supports them by giving them time off and the resources to bring their ideas to reality. Over a dozen startups have been spun off from the Creative Lab program already and Samsung continues to support them with resources after they’re separated from this division.

Samsung C-Lab’s new projects

S-Ray (Sound-Ray) is a portable directional speaker. The demo video shows three S-Ray devices – Mini, Handy, and Neckband. The USP of these devices is to help people avoid having to put on earphones for a long time which can cause ear pain, and avoids the distractions to others Bluetooth speakers can cause.

GoBreath is a health-care solution developed by a doctor at Samsung Medical Center. It consists of a portable device and mobile app that can teach patients basic techniques such as inspiration, coughing or deep breathing.

Samsung says “It is a recovery solution for people who have experienced lung damage and suffer from postoperative pulmonary complications after general anesthesia.” The app provides exercise guidelines and helps patients to check how well their lungs have recovered. GoBreath also offers cloud service for Doctors to monitor their patients’ recovery progress.

The third project is Relúmĭno glasses. Relúmĭno app was first showcased at Mobile World Congress last year. Relúmĭno is Samsung’s visual aid application for people with visual impairments. The app uses Gear VR to assist visually-impaired people by enhancing their vision to overcome everyday challenges. Building on that concept, C-Lab built Relúmĭno glasses to utilize the technology more comfortably and discreetly. Samsung says the “glasses work in conjunction with a smartphone, utilizing its processors and batteries, which makes Relúmĭno glasses light and comfortable to wear”

Apart from these three projects, Samsung will also showcase products from LINKFLOW, Kitten Planet, lululab, KIDSOFT, Mangoslab, Innomdle lab, and analogue plus – seven start-ups which have been spun off from Samsung C-Lab.

Samsung aiming to sell 320 million smartphones in 2018

Samsung doesn’t seem to think that it’s going to see a surge in smartphone sales this year. A new report out of South Korea claims that the company is playing it safe this year and maintaining its sales goal for 2018 at a similar level as 2017. Industry sources cited in the report claim that Samsung is aiming to sell 320 million smartphones in 2018.

Samsung’s 2018 smartphone sales

The report claims that Samsung has informed its suppliers about its sales plan for 2018. The company is reportedly aiming to sell 320 million smartphones, 40 million feature phones, 20 million tablets and 5 million wearable devices this year.

The company may not have set a higher target than last year due to saturation in the market, particularly the high-end segment. Nevertheless, Samsung’s target is considerably more than that of its rivals Apple and Huawei. They sell around 200 million and 150 million smartphones annually every year.

The company may focus on improving profitability instead through premium handsets. The mobile division can certainly contribute more to the company’s bottom line and Samsung is expected to focus on that in 2018.

The new Galaxy A8 handsets are the first new devices that Samsung will sell this year. It will then release the flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in a couple of months.

If all goes according to plan, Samsung is likely going to retain its position as the world’s top smartphone vendor this year as well.

Sketchy Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ live image leaked

We’ve already seen countless leaked renders of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. A sketchy live image of the upcoming flagship handsets has been leaked online today. This is the first of many such images that we’ll see in the days leading up to the Galaxy S9’s launch.

This purported live image doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary. We’ve seen these design elements in the many renders that have already leaked online.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ live image

From what we’ve heard about the new handsets so far, they’ll look quite similar to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. That’s not a bad thing as they were two of the best Android devices on the market in 2017.

The specifications of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will more or less be the same. The camera is expected to be one major differentiating factor between the two devices. The Galaxy S9 will have a single camera on the back while the Galaxy S9+ is expected to have a vertical dual camera system. Another design change you can notice in this image is the repositioned fingerprint sensor below the camera.

There are some inconsistencies in this image which leads us to believe that it’s not actually showing us real units of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The Samsung logo on the Galaxy S9 appears to be too small and the reflections on the device seem too good to be true, for example.

Samsung is reportedly going to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in February. Expect to see many such leaks in the weeks to come.

Samsung’s new Chromebook will be the first to feature a 13-megapixel camera

It was first reported a couple of months back that Samsung is working on a new Chromebook bearing the codename “Nautilus.” Subsequent reports revealed that it’s going to be a 2-in-1 Chromebook with a detachable keyboard.

The upcoming Chromebook is also going to have a stowable stylus. This will enable users to get the most out of the 2-in-1 form factor. According to a new report, it may also be the first Chromebook ever to feature a 13-megapixel camera.

Samsung’s new Chromebook

New code references have been discovered in the Chromium Gerrit which confirm that the device codenamed “Nautilus” is indeed a detachable Chromebook by Samsung. It’s going to be powered by a 7th-generation Intel processor.

The code references also reveal the presence of the Sony IMX258 sensor. This suggests that the Chromebook is going to have a camera module with this sensor. The IMX258 is a 13-megapixel Exmor RS 1/3.06-inch sensor with 1.1-micron pixels. It has been used in flagship smartphones like the LG G6.

Samsung’s new Chromebook will thus be the first to feature a 13-megapixel camera. It’s a big step up for Chromebooks as no other manufacturer has put a camera with a resolution higher than 720p in their devices.

Just because it’s going to have a high-end camera sensor doesn’t mean the new Chromebook will be great at taking pictures. Software optimization plays a key role and it’s unclear right now what improvements are being made on that front.

Samsung unveiled two new Chromebooks at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in January last year, the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro. It’s possible that the company might unveil this Chromebook at CES 2018 next week even if it’s not released for a few months.

Samsung expected to see 73% increase in Q4 2017 operating profit

2017 was a good year for Samsung. The company posted record profits in two quarters and is on track for a full-year record operating profit. Market analysts are now predicting that Samsung will post an operating profit of 16 trillion won or around $15 billion in Q4 2017. If that’s accurate, it would be a 73 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The prediction is based on a survey conducted by Yonhap Infomax of 19 brokerage houses. Samsung’s chip division is likely going to be the biggest contributor to the company’s fortunes in this quarter as well.

Samsung’s Q4 2017 operating profit

The latest predictions come amid adjustments in expectations made by some analysts. Morgan Stanley recently cut its recommendation on Samsung as NAND prices have started to reverse and memory chip demand is going to peak soon.

Some investment firms have cut their Q4 2017 operating profit forecast for Samsung by more than 5 percent to $14.5 billion. Six investment firms have slashed their estimates in the past four weeks.

The latest survey suggests that some are still bullish on Samsung’s prospects for Q4 2017. Hanwha Investment & Securities predicts that Samsung’s fourth quarter earnings will likely hover below expectations due to one-off costs but the company’s business conditions remain robust.

It’s also of the view that Samsung is going to post earnings growth in the first half of 2018 as well. Samsung is yet to release its earnings guidance for Q4 2017, when that happens we’ll have a good idea of what to expect from the quarterly results.

Samsung trademarks ‘DeX Pad’ Galaxy S9 accessory

As the launch of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ inches closer, more details are emerging every day about the accessories that will launch along with them.

Dex Station was one of the headline-grabbing accessories launched with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ last year. It enables users to connect their Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note8, to a monitor, keyboard and mouse for a desktop-like experience.

New name and new form factor

While the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are rumored to follow the same design language and naming scheme of the last year’s flagship models, the newer version of Dex Station is expected to launch with a slightly different name and form factor.

Samsung has registered the ‘Dex Pad’ trademark at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). The registration almost confirms the launch of a new Dex accessory with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The name change also implies that the new Dex Station will probably come in a different form factor.

All the rumors have been pointing towards a new Dex Station which doesn’t require users to dock the phone but instead place it flat like on a wireless charging pad. The new form factor should also allow the smartphone screen to be used as a touchpad for the desktop experience.

While the Dex Pad seems to be a step up from the current Dex Station, it would have been more interesting if Samsung went the Huawei route and eliminated the need for a separate accessory. Huawei’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro offer Dex-like functionality by using a simple USB-C cable. While Samsung’s approach helps in better performance, the additional cost of buying Dex Pad may restrict it to a niche group of users.
