Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ get Bixby update and May security patch on T-Mobile

Earlier today, T-Mobile rolled out the much-awaited Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Surprisingly, the company also released Android 7.0 for the Galaxy Tab S2. It has released a firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ as well, but it’s not Nougat, as both devices come with Android 7.0 out of the box.

The update that T-Mobile is rolling out today for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ brings the May security patch for both handsets. The May security patch brings fixes for 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in the Android operating system as well as fixes for 11 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s own software.

The changelog mentions that this firmware release also brings an update for Bixby. There’s no need to be excited just yet, though. This Bixby update doesn’t enable Bixby Voice and it’s still unclear when the voice capabilities of one of the Galaxy S8′s biggest features will be available.

The usual slew of device stability and performance improvements are included in this update that weighs in at over 375MB. It also ensures improved stability for microSD cards. T-Mobile is rolling out this update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ over-the-air and it should be live for all users soon.

T-Mobile releases Nougat for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy Tab S2

T-Mobile confirmed a couple of days back that the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge was ready. It promised to release said update in the near future. T-Mobile subscribers who own either handset should keep an eye out for an update notification today as Magenta has now released Nougat for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

That’s not all. While T-Mobile didn’t mention the Galaxy Tab S2 earlier this week, it has also released the Nougat update for this tablet. Not like Galaxy Tab S2 owners on T-Mobile are going to mind, they will be excited to finally get a taste of Nougat as well.

Firmware version G920TUVU5FQE1 and G925TUVU5FQE1 has been released by T-Mobile for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. Galaxy Tab S2 owners on T-Mobile should keep an eye out for firmware version T817TUVU2BQE2.

All of the features that come part and parcel of Android 7.0 Nougat are included in the update for all three devices. You should definitely check out our Whats’s New with Nougat series to find out everything that you need to about Nougat on Samsung devices.

T-Mobile is rolling out these firmware updates over-the-air so it may take a couple of days before they arrive for all users across the United States.

SamMobile Daily Recap: June 7, 2017 — Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 and more!

If you’re sick of accidentally pushing the Bixby button on your Galaxy S8, you need this case

If you’re sick of accidentally activating Bixby by pressing the dedicated physical key on the left-hand side of your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+, you may want to donate a few bucks to back this project over on Kickstarter, which aims to put an end to your frustration.

Read more: [Poll] Are you unhappy that Samsung won’t allow remapping of the Bixby button?

As you can see from the image below, the solution is essentially a case that covers the Bixby button; a pretty ingenious answer to a problem that should never have been there in the first place, especially when you consider pricing for the Galaxy S8 starts at $724.99.

Anti Bixby

For those unaware, Bixby Voice was originally intended to launch in the UK and US alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ back in April, but it only went live in South Korea, as Samsung’s reportedly been having trouble teaching the assistant English.

S-Patch3 wearable with Samsung’s Bio Processor spotted at FCC

Samsung announced in late 2015 that it had developed a Bio Processor to improve health tracking features in wearable devices. It was going to make products powered by this chip and was also going to sell the chip to other manufacturers who wanted to improve their fitness and activity trackers.

At the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas, Samsung showcased a prototype wearable device that utilized the Bio Processor it had announced a few weeks back. It was called S-Patch. The prototype featured Bluetooth connectivity and built-in memory. It could be attached to the user’s chest to track heart rate in real time.

It appears that Samsung has developed the commercial version of the prototype that it demonstrated at CES in January last year. A Samsung device called S-Patch3 has been spotted at the FCC. An image included in the filing reveals that this is a “wearable health monitoring system.”

No further details are available at this point in time so we’ll have to wait and see when Samsung reveals more about this new wearable device. Whenever an unreleased device makes an appearance at the FCC, it’s normally taken as an indication that the launch is not that far off.

That’s likely going to be the case with the S-Patch3 as well.

Get a free Gear Fit 2 when you buy the Galaxy S7 in the UK

Samsung is running a great promotion for customers who decide to purchase the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge in the United Kingdom. Customers who purchase the handset before June 30 will be eligible to receive a free Gear Fit 2 fitness tracker from Samsung.

Customers must have purchased the handset from a participating retailer. They then have to visit the promotion page on Samsung UK’s website and provide the relevant information to claim their free gift.

The online claim form needs to be filled and proof of the handset’s purchase has to be provided. Customers also have to provide the device’s IMEI number and their contact information. The device must have been purchased in the month of June 2017 in order for the customer to be eligible for a free Gear Fit 2.

Even though the purchase period ends on June 30, the claim window will be upon until August 28, so customers have until then to submit their claim and then wait for Samsung to ship out a free Gear Fit 2 to them.

I am sure that while many would have preferred it if Samsung offered this free gift with every purchase of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the Galaxy S7 is no slouch either, and it’s actually a great option if you’re not that keen on Samsung’s new flagship.

Connect an external battery to your Galaxy S8 with Mophie’s new charge force case

Mophie has launched a new charge force case for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ which enables users to connect an external battery with the device for true wireless charging on the go.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ already have support for PMA and Qi wireless charging, just place the handset on any charging pad that supports either standard and it will charge the phone, but Mophie’s products are meant for helping you out when there’s no charging pad available.

Mophie charge force for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is a slim case that’s wrapped in leather. The built-in magnets hold Mophie’s charge force powerstation mini in place. It’s a 3,000mAh external battery that wirelessly charges the device upon contact with the case.

Users won’t have to remove the case if they happen to come across a wireless charging pad. Mophie’s charge force case is compatible with conventional wireless charging pads so users will be able to wirelessly charge their device by directly placing it on the pad, without having to remove the cover.

Mophie is selling the charge force case for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on its website for $49.95. The charge force powerstation mini also costs $49.95.

Samsung updates Bixby with support for short voice commands

Samsung highlights Bixby as a major selling point of the Galaxy S8 but the company has only released this feature properly in South Korea. Bixby’s voice interface only has support for the Korean language and it was released to users in the country a couple of weeks back. Samsung has now updated Bixby with support for short voice commands.

Bixby is the new voice interface that Samsung debuted with the Galaxy S8. The company claims that Bixby will enable users to do everything that they can do on the device by tapping on the display with just voice commands.

The latest Bixby update enables the voice interface to remember keywords from a particular voice command so that the next the user wants to perform the same task, they can give Bixby a short command.

For example, if the user says “Bixby, please check the balance of my bank account,” it will remember keywords like “balance” and “bank account.” When the user wants to check the balance next time, they can just give Bixby a short command like “account balance” or “bank account.”

The latest Bixby update that’s rolling out to users in South Korea also brings changes for Bixby’s background color and fixes several bugs.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to enable Bixby’s voice capabilities in other markets across the globe.

Coral Blue Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ possibly headed to the US

It appears that Samsung will soon start selling the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Coral Blue color in the United States. A render has been leaked online today which gives us our first look at the US-bound Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in Coral Blue.

Samsung is currently selling its new flagship smartphones in the United States in Midnight Black, Arctic Silver and Orchid Gray colors. There has been no official confirmation from the company as yet about expanding the color options to include Coral Blue

You might remember that Samsung first introduced this color option with the Galaxy Note 7 last year. It was very well received, so much so that after the Galaxy Note 7 met its demise, Samsung decided to release the Galaxy S7 edge in Coral Blue just to reignite customer interest in the handset again.

It’s no surprise that Samsung is bringing over this color option to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ as well, the new flagship will undoubtedly look gorgeous in Coral Blue as the Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S7 did.

It’s unclear at this point in time which carriers will be offering the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in this color. Samsung is yet to confirm details about the availability of this color option for Galaxy S8 owners in the United States.

Samsung Display may begin iPhone OLED production this month

Samsung’s display-making affiliate, Samsung Display, is reportedly going to start mass production of OLED panels for the next-generation iPhone this month. Samsung is believed to have been awarded the contract for OLED display panels for the iPhone 8, it’s going to be Apple’s first smartphone to feature an OLED display if the reports are correct.

According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung Display is expected to start mass production of OLED panels for the iPhone 8 later this month. Apple has reportedly approved the prototype panels and Samsung is now said to be making orders for parts and materials.

Samsung is likely going to ship more than ten million screens every month. Apple is believed to have ordered 80 million screens this year alone. The screen may use a flexible OLED to cover the entire front of the device but it’s not said to be curved like the one on the Galaxy S8.

Apple is expected to launch three new iPhones in September this year and at least one of the new models is said to feature an OLED display, a first for Apple’s smartphones. It’s also said that Apple is going to launch OLED-only iPhone models from 2018.

Samsung will likely be a major supplier of OLED displays for Apple in the following years given its virtual monopoly on the small-to-medium OLED panel market.

Samsung is reportedly working on its Bixby smart speaker

The market for voice assistant-powered smart speakers has exploded over the past year as Amazon has seen runaway success with its Echo series of devices. Amazon’s Echo speakers are powered by the company’s Alexa voice assistant. Apart from controlling smart home devices and streaming music, the assistant has over 15,000 skills that it can perform in response to voice commands.

Microsoft chucked its hat in the ring as well by teaming up with Harman Kardon, which happens to be a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, on the Invoke. It’s a smart speaker that leverages Harman Kardon’s high-end sound technology and couples that with Microsoft’s artificial intelligence platform Cortana.

Even Apple jumped on the bandwagon earlier this week when it unveiled the HomePod. It’s a new smart speaker that the company will ship in December. It also focuses on providing a premium sound quality alongside all of the features that its voice assistant Siri offers.

Samsung introduced its own voice assistant called Bixby with the Galaxy S8. The company has made no secret of the fact that it will expand Bixby to other devices, including home appliances. The company already has a patent for a device that appears to be a smart speaker and now a report out of South Korea suggests that the company is preparing such a product.

It remains to be seen how long it will take Samsung to come out with its own smart speaker. The company hasn’t been able to launch Bixby with English language support as yet so that’s something it needs to accomplish first.

Galaxy Note 8 with bezel-less display and dual camera might be unveiled in August

Now that Samsung has got the Galaxy S8 out of the way, fans are looking forward to the company’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 8. Despite last year’s Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung has confirmed that it’s going to release another Galaxy Note flagship. It hasn’t confirmed much about the device so far, though.

There are plenty of rumors about the Galaxy Note 8. A recent leak suggested that the handset would have a bezel-less display, much like that of the Galaxy S8. It’s even believed to have the same aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8′s Infinity Display.

We have also heard countless rumors that the Galaxy Note 8 will be Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a dual rear camera system. Even the Galaxy S8 was rumored to come with it but Samsung appears to have decided to launch the dual camera system with its next flagship smartphone.

Rumor has it that Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 officially in late August which would give it a strategic edge over the iPhone 8 that’s due in September. Samsung has traditionally used the IFA stage to unveil new Galaxy Note handsets. IFA 2017 kicks off September 1 so perhaps Samsung might align the launch with this event yet again.

None of this has been officially confirmed by Samsung as yet so take it with a grain of salt.
