Samsung announces Samsung NEXT, global fund to see startups achieve success

Samsung sees services as an important part of its future, and recognizes that innovation and talent can come from anywhere – even the smallest of startups. To that end, the Korean giant announced Samsung NEXT, a revamp of its former Global Innovation Center, to fund these startups that are paving the way in trending tech fields such as the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and AI (artificial intelligence). Samsung launched Samsung NEXT three months ago after starting a new incubation center in Tel Aviv.

Today’s announcement was about not just startups, but their funding, as funding can make or break a young, fledgling startup. Money is the key to opportunity in the tech business, and Samsung doesn’t want young startups destroyed before they grow. Since services are what the mobile experience is all about, Samsung’s financial support in this area can help bring “think-outside-the-box” ideas to its own mobile experience (particularly for its growing platform, Tizen).

Samsung’s Tel Aviv center is the fifth location the company has started so far (with other offices in Korea, San Francisco, New York, and Mountain View). Additional incubation centers will open up later this year.

Samsung brings new innovations across the board at CES 2017

Samsung has been a major player in the Internet of Things (IoT), but the Korean giant introduced new devices today across the board at CES 2017 for both work and play that will enhance the lives of consumers (no matter the task).

First, Samsung unveiled the new QLED TV, a 75-inch monitor that lets you view on-screen content from any angle. Samsung says that it’s perfect for viewing despite your viewing angle or room lighting. QLED, as Samsung says, doesn’t have the risk of burn-in that comes with OLED TVs, and Samsung has made a number of changes to the QLED TV so that color accuracy is better than ever before. Alongside of the QLED TV, Samsung introduced accessories such as the no-gap wall mount and the optional TV stands (Gravity and Studio) to beautify your home while providing the setup you want. Finally, new services such as the Samsung Sports Service and TV PLUS (now expanded to the US market) provide more content at your fingertips.

Additionally, Samsung has brought other innovations to the home such as its FlexWash+FlexDry setup that lets you wash both large loads and small loads simultaneously. Family Hub 2.0 takes Samsung’s own 21.5-inch touchscreen refrigerator and now expands its selection from 4 to 10 for greater choice and customization.

Apart from the home, Samsung’s greatest contributions at CES came in the form of laptops, with the Chromebook Plus, Chromebook Pro, the Notebook 9, and the Notebook Odyssey. These Chromebooks make Chromebook history, being the very first to come with a pen that can be used for drawing, doodling, and writing. The Notebook 9 is a 15-inch laptop that is headed to the US market this year and features a discrete GPU for intensive gaming tasks. While the Notebook 9 can be used for gaming, Samsung’s Notebook Odyssey is the company’s first gaming laptop that’s designed for any gaming tasks you throw at it. Coming in at 15 and 17 inches, Samsung says it will provide more details (other than those that can be found at the link below) later this year.

With new TVs, a unique washer and dryer system, alongside of an improved touchscreen refrigerator and new consumer and gamer laptops, Samsung shows that it can make home life and mobile life better.

You can view more details about these devices at the link below.

Samsung has shipped more than five million Gear VR devices

Samsung dropped an interesting figure during its press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 today. President and COO of Samsung Electronics America Tim Baxter mentioned during his talk that the company has shipped more than five million Gear VR devices and consumers have viewed more than ten million hours of immersive video using Samsung’s virtual reality solution.

The company has been working hard since last year to push its VR credentials. It has created an entire end-to-end virtual reality solution that includes the Gear 360 camera which enables users to easily capture VR content that they can then view with the Gear VR headset. Samsung launched a slightly improved version of its Gear VR headset last year.

Samsung has relied on promotions and offers to push virtual reality. Last year, it gave away a free Gear VR headset to all those who pre-ordered a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, and it goes without saying that millions of people across the globe pre-ordered one of the best flagships that Samsung has ever made.

Samsung addresses elephant in the room at CES 2017, says Note 7 report will be shared ‘very soon’

There was an elephant in the room this afternoon as Tim Baxter, President and COO of Samsung Electronics America walked out on stage at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 to kick off Samsung’s press conference. While many would have expected Samsung to simply not mention the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Baxter started off by addressing the elephant in the room.

“As you know, this year was a challenging year for Samsung. Some of you were directly impacted and some certainly saw the media coverage especially about the Note 7,” Baxter said, adding that “We continue our intensive efforts internally and with third party experts to understand what happened and to make sure that it does not happen again. He added that Samsung will be sharing its root cause report on the Galaxy Note 7 “very soon.”

Despite the setbacks, Baxter reminded the attendees that Samsung has not and will not stop innovating and then he kicked off the day’s proceedings. It was good move by Samsung to get this out of the way so that the press can now focus on everything new that it’s unveiling at CES 2017 instead of obsessing about why it didn’t mention the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco at all.

Samsung’s new Chromebooks are ‘Designed for Google Play’

We had heard rumors that Samsung was working on new Chromebooks and the company has officially announced them today at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017. Designed in partnership with Google, Samsung says that the new Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro have been “Designed for Google Play,” that’s because both notebooks come with the Play Store installed straight out of the box, allowing users to easily install and use Android apps on the Chromebooks.

The idea with these notebooks was to provide the power and productivity of a laptop without compromising on the flexibility and versatility that a tablet offers. Both models feature a 360-degree rotating touchscreen, a quad HD resolution display and a built-in digitized pen packaged in a new lightweight metal design.

“With the Chromebook Plus and Pro, we’re partnering with Google to pair a sleek design with supreme flexibility, encouraging users to experience more with Google Play and Android apps, while continuing to provide simplicity, top-rated security and shareability inherent in Chromebooks,” said Alanna Cotton, vice president of product marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

The 360-degree rotating touchscreen display of the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro allow the device to be used as both a notebook and a premium tablet. For the first time in Samsung’s Chromebook lineup, both models feature a built-in pen which is embedded on the side of the device. The pen enables users to easily take notes and capture on-screen content.

The Quad HD 2400×1600 pixel resolution display on these notebooks has 3:2 aspect ratio and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro come with updated ports which include two USB Type-C ports and have support for 4K video streaming.

Samsung Chromebook Plus has an ARM hexa-core processor while the Chromebook Pro packs an Intel Core M3 processor. Both have 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 720p front camera, and a 39Wh battery that promises eight hours of usage on a single charge.

Samsung will start selling the Chromebook Plus next month via major retailers with prices starting at $449. The Chromebook Pro will be available later this spring which is why its price hasn’t been revealed yet.

Gear S3, Gear S2 and Gear Fit 2 iOS support is finally live

Samsung confirmed in late 2015 that it would flip the switch on iOS support for the Gear S2 by mid-January 2016. That didn’t happen and Samsung kept us waiting for a very long time until it finally kicked off the Gear S2 iOS beta program some four months ago. Just last month we reported on the leaked Gear Manager app for iOS which enabled Gear S2 and Gear S3 owners to use the smartwatch with their iPhones. The company is finally following through on the promise it made back in 2015.

Samsung has officially announced today that the Gear S3, Gear S2 and Gear Fit 2 are now compatible with iOS. Users can download the Samsung Gear S app for the Gear S2 and the Gear S3 or the Gear Fit app for the Gear Fit 2 on compatible iOS devices from the App Store or via http://ift.tt/1OO5atX. Once the relevant app has been downloaded, all users need to do is connect to their iOS device by tapping on “Connect to Gear” and the app will automatically sync with the wearable device. Bear in mind that features and functions will vary by device.

Compatible iOS devices include all smartphones from the iPhone 5 and up running iOS 9.0 or above.

Samsung rolling out Nougat for the Galaxy S7 to some users

Samsung allowed members of the Galaxy Beta Program to test beta builds of Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The company ended the program late last month and said that it would try and release the update to the public in January. We’ve come across reports that Samsung is rolling out Nougat for the Galaxy S7 to a small number of users, it appears that the company is conducting a soak test ahead of the full-scale rollout.

This particular build bears version number G935FXXU1DPLR and features the January Security Patch. Bear in mind that since Samsung will not be releasing any more beta builds, this might just be the final build that the company will release to the public hopefully in the near future.

Are you one of the lucky few that appear to have been selected for this soak test? Do let us know in the comments below. If you’re interested in finding out about the improvements that Samsung has made in this update check out our What’s New With Nougat series.

Samsung Galaxy S8′s Continuum-like desktop feature might look like this

With top-of-the-line processing chipsets in smartphones reaching desktop-grade performance levels, it only makes sense to offer a desktop-like functionality. Microsoft is already offering PC-like functionality with its Continuum feature on Windows 10 Mobile. We reported a couple of days ago that even Samsung might start offering PC-like functionality with the Galaxy S8 when it is connected to an external monitor. We have now stumbled upon a concept image that shows how the Galaxy S8′s desktop experience might look like.

A concept image from Androbit neatly shows what the Galaxy S8‘s UI might look like when connected to an external monitor. With Android 7.0 Nougat offering Freeform Window Mode, it becomes even easier for Samsung to build such functionality. Moreover, there’s no dearth of apps on Android, so users can get their job done even when they’re out of reach of a real desktop PC. Since the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset is capable enough to run full-fledged Windows 10 OS and Win32 desktop apps, a similarly specced 10nm Exynos 8895 SoC might be capable of easily running PC-like functionality.

What do you think about a Continuum-like feature? Would you use it if this feature came built into the Galaxy S8?

Rumor: Samsung will release a flat variant of the Galaxy S8

For the past couple of years, Samsung has been launching two variants of its flagship Galaxy S series handsets. The Galaxy S6 has a flat display while the Galaxy S6 edge touts a dual-edge curved display. It’s a similar story with the Galaxy S7 and that’s how it was expected to be with the Galaxy S8 as well until a few months ago when rumors started circulating that perhaps Samsung would do away with the flat variant and launch the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus with both featuring a dual-edge curved display.

That might not be the case anymore if the latest whispers out of China that we’re hearing are believed. It’s said that Samsung is retaining the flat variant so we’re going to see the Galaxy S8 with a flat display as well. Of the two variants, the SM-G950 and SM-G955 are expected to feature the flat and dual-edge curved display respectively. There’s no final word as yet on the display size but recent rumors suggest that Samsung might go beyond the 6-inch mark for the SM-G955.

As always, take such rumors with a grain of salt. We’ve previously told you that Samsung has been testing several prototypes of its upcoming flagships which is why we’re seeing all kinds of contradictory reports and rumors about the device. Nothing is set in stone at this point in time. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 at an event in New York City this April.

Samsung will reportedly procure LCD panels from LG

If a new report from South Korea is to be believed, Samsung is in talks with fellow Korean giant, LG, to supply LCD panels for its upcoming televisions. While the two companies are rivals in the industry, a deal like this could turn out to be mutually beneficial.

Head of Samsung’s TV division, Kim Hyun-suk partially confirmed this at the CES 2017 event in Las Vegas, although he didn’t reveal much. He said “There are no specifics decided yet but the two companies are deliberating on the matter carefully and seriously.”

A previous report had talked about Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd and Sharp Corp stalling all shipments of LCD panels to Samsung, which has left the company in a tough spot. But it seems like both LG and Samsung are close to finalizing a deal. It is rumored that Samsung will outsource batteries for the Galaxy Note 8 from LG later this year (although a report from earlier today suggests Samsung SDI will continue to be the main supplier), so the partnership between the two companies could extend beyond LCD panels.

The best features of the Galaxy A (2017) smartphones

The Galaxy A (2017) series of mid-range smartphones finally went official earlier this week, and Samsung has hit it out of the park in terms of the features on offer. Samsung has brought quite a few features from its flagship line down to its mid-range; we have already compared the specifications of each new Galaxy A device with its predecessor’s, and today we’re taking a look at what we think are the most interesting new features on the Galaxy A (2017) lineup.

Water resistance

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 phones and the now discontinued Galaxy Note 7 were rated for IP68 water and dust resistance, the highest seen on any flagship smartphone this year, and the Korean giant is now offering the same level of water resistance at a lower price with the Galaxy A3 (2107), A5 (2017) and the A7 (2017). Water resistance might look like a fringe benefit to some, but it can make all the difference should you get caught out in the rain or when the phone takes an accidental dive in water. The best part is that these phones will look and feel premium while being protected against the elements, and it’s clearly one of the important new features of the A (2017) lineup.

Always On Display

Samsung’s 2015 flagships still haven’t received this feature (and probably never will because of their small batteries), but Always On Display is a part of the new A series smartphones. We’re yet to find out if this is the full-fledged version that supports notifications from third-party apps, but even in its basic form, Always On Display should be welcomed by quite a few folks. Sure, it will take its toll on battery life, but the A5 (2017) and A7 (2017) shouldn’t be hugely affected thanks to their 3,000 mAh and 3,600 mAh batteries.

Samsung Pay with MST

Samsung Pay was supported on the Galaxy A (2016) phones, but with the 2017 lineup, it is no longer limited to only the LTE model. Samsung Pay is set to expand to new markets over the coming months, and anyone buying one of the Galaxy A (2017) phones should be able to make contactless payments at supported merchants.

Floating shutter button in camera

The shutter button in the camera app on the new A series phones can float, which is to say it can be placed anywhere on the screen. Basically, no more awkwardly reaching for the shutter button when you’re trying to take a selfie, or hiding the screen with your hand while trying to reach the volume buttons to take a photo. It’s a minor feature, but one that should make a lot of difference when you’re using your new Galaxy A device to take pictures.

16-megapixel selfie camera

The Galaxy A (2017) handsets feature the highest-resolution front-facing camera seen on a Samsung device (not counting the China-exclusive, yet-to-be-launched Galaxy C smartphones). The 16-megapixel front camera should take selfies with considerably higher detail than even Samsung’s flagship phones, and the company can finally compete with all those smartphones from Chinese manufacturers that have been offering high-resolution selfie cameras for a while now. Too bad the A3 (2017) has only an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

USB Type-C port

Well, a USB Type-C port may or may not seem like an interesting feature to you, as it would make your microUSB cables unusable, but Samsung is future-proofing its mid-range smartphones by opting for the newest USB connector.

They come in blue!

The Blue Coral color that debuted on the Galaxy Note 7 has been renamed to Blue Mist on the A (2017) phones, but it should still be as cool as we found it to be on the Note 7 (and lately, the Galaxy S7 edge). The A series phones are completely blue instead of having a golden trim on the sides, but it’s great to see Samsung making these color options available in the mid-range segment.

There’s a lot to like about the new Galaxy A handsets, but the features above are what we think are the most interesting. See something we missed? Let us know by leaving a comment, and tell us what you think are the best features of Samsung’s latest mid-range smartphones.

Samsung details contents of January security patch

Samsung has today shared the contents of this month’s maintenance release on its official Security Blog. The upgrade addresses a total of 67 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and an addition 28 patches for the South Korean company’s latest smartphones, including security fixes for the Exynos 8895 and Snapdragon 835, which are the processors that the upcoming Galaxy S8 are expected to feature.

Like usual, the majority of the update’s contents are listed as “privately disclosed” and can’t be viewed by the general public. However, as we’ve said time and time again — there’s a good reason for this. The manufacturer can’t reveal all of the patches included in the upgrade as there are fixes for bugs that may not have been discovered yet and, once uncovered, hackers may attempt to exploit them before the firmware is rolled out.

Samsung to produce 10 million units of the Galaxy S8 for its launch in April

If a new report published by ET News is anything to go by, it would appear that Samsung has confirmed it will produce 10 million units of the much-anticipated Galaxy S8 in time for its expected launch in April. The firm reportedly delivered a production plan to its suppliers earlier this month, which reveals that the first batch of parts will arrive at manufacturing plants in February, with mass production scheduled to start in March.

So why 10 million? Well, Samsung managed to sell an astonishing 10 million units of the Galaxy S7 in the first month of it hitting the market, which was a record for the company. It clearly has confidence in the new features the Galaxy S8 will bring to the table as it’s assuming that it will be received by consumers in a similar light. With a lot of former Galaxy Note 7 customers now looking for new handsets, it has an opportunity to make back some of the seven trillion won it lost last year.

For those who haven’t been following the leaks and rumors closely, the Galaxy S8 is believed to be an extremely powerful device with an Exynos 8895 Octa/Snapdragon 830 CPU (region dependent), possibly 8GB of RAM, dual 12MP rear-facing cameras, an 8MP selfie shooter and an iris scanner. It’ll also be available in two models — one with a 5-inch display and the other with a mighty 6-inch panel. Unfortunately, though, it could cost up to 20 percent more than its predecessor. Samsung could also be moving to on-screen navigation keys, a move that might be necessitated by the company’s goal of fitting a larger display in a form factor similar to the Galaxy S7 lineup.
