Samsung leaks Galaxy Watch on its own website

We have yet to see leaked renders of Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch but it appears that the company has leaked the Galaxy Watch on its own website. A listing for the Galaxy Watch was spotted earlier today on Samsung’s official US website and mentioned the SM-R810 model number.

It’s already known that Samsung has developed two models of the Galaxy Watch – the SM-R800 and SM-R810. Both of these models have already been certified by the FCC. The listing was for the latter and while the link led to a dead page, it did show a photo of the Galaxy Watch and mentioned that this is the 42mm model.

Galaxy Watch leaked on Samsung’s own website

We recently reported that the two Galaxy Watch models will offer different screen sizes. That does appear to be the case if this listing is anything to go by. The report mentioned that the SM-R800 will have a 1.3-inch display and will measure 46mm. The SM-R810 was mentioned as the 42mm model with a 1.2-inch display. The size of this model has thus essentially been confirmed by Samsung itself.

The listing was found on a page which listed previous models of Samsung’s smartwatches including the Gear S2, Gear S3 and Gear Sport. Samsung is moving away from the Gear branding for its smartwatches. The upcoming wearable device will be called the Galaxy Watch instead. We have confirmed exclusively that despite the move to the Galaxy branding, the smartwatch will indeed be powered by Tizen OS.

As expected, the listing was quickly removed from Samsung’s website after word of it spread online. The accompanying image shows that there aren’t any major design changes compared to existing models but the new Rose Gold color will certainly be appealing to many customers.

Samsung is reportedly going to announce the Galaxy Watch on August 9, the very same day that it unveils the Galaxy Note 9. Both devices are expected to be released on August 24.

Samsung will release a consumer version of The Wall MicroLED TV next year

Samsung showcased a 146-inch modular MicroLED TV named The Wall at the CES 2018 back in January. While unveiling The Wall, Samsung said it would be available for purchase sometime later this year. The company reiterated the timeline again in the Q1 earnings summary in April. As we enter into the second half of 2018, Samsung is revealing more details about The Wall TV.

According to reports in the Korean media, Samsung has finished working on the MicroLED technology and is gearing up for the mass production of The Wall in September. The company started taking orders for The Wall Professional, a variant aimed at businesses, at the InfoComm 2018 in Las Vegas last month. Samsung will be targeting hotels, stadium, museums, luxury mansions etc with this version of The Wall.

The consumer version will be thinner

Samsung plans to bring The Wall MicroLED TV to the consumer market as well. Han Jong-hee, head of Samsung’s video and display business, said the company will release a consumer version named The Wall Luxury next year to target the premium large-size TV market. The consumer version will be thinner at 30 mm or less, compared to the 80 mm thickness of the business model.

Han Jong-hee also said Samsung wants The Wall to be called as a display or a screen and not as a TV. Due to the modular nature and bezel-less design, The Wall will not come in fixed sizes like other TVs in the market. Instead, customers can build a size of their own by selecting any number of display pieces they want.

While there is no information about pricing, Han Jong-hee said, “The price will not be as high as people think.” He also believes prices will come down once The Wall enters mass production. You can expect Samsung to showcase The Wall or variants of it again at the IFA 2018 in Berlin next month.

Teddy Brown Galaxy Note 9 breaks cover in leaked render

The Galaxy Note 9 is reportedly going to be offered in five different colors at launch and we’ve seen almost all of them in leaked renders. The Coral Blue/Deepsea Blue Galaxy Note 9 render appeared online just yesterday. Today, we get to see a new leaked render which shows what the handset will look like in Teddy Brown.

Teddy Brown is a new color option for the upcoming flagship. The color option was previously revealed by model codes for the Galaxy Note 9’s new S Pen. This is the first such render that we’re seeing of this hue.

Teddy Brown Galaxy Note 9

The leaked render appears to have originated from an online retailer’s website as it also features the Gear IconX earbuds, DeX Station and the Gear S3 smartwatch. These accessories may be offered as promotional items with the new flagship smartphone by the retailer.

Perhaps the upcoming Galaxy Watch may not be offered with the Galaxy Note 9 as part of a promotional deal. Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch is reportedly going to be announced alongside the Galaxy Note 9 on August 9. Not only that, Samsung is even expected to release it alongside its new flagship smartphone on August 24.

The S Pen’s color will not necessarily be matched to the body. It appears to be the case for the Midnight Black and Teddy Brown Galaxy Note 9 but not the blue handset which has a two-tone blue and gold S Pen. This two-tone finish for the S Pen has been seen in leaked Galaxy Note 9 promotional material as well.

The other color options for the Galaxy Note 9 include gray and Lilac Purple. Only the gray hasn’t surfaced in a leaked render as yet. The Midnight Black we have already seen in leaked live images of the Galaxy Note 9.

You can expect such leaks to keep coming in. We’re only a couple of weeks away from the official launch of the Galaxy Note 9 at a special event in New York City on August 9.

512GB Galaxy Note 9 price revealed, base model storage is 128GB

A new report has brought some information about the different Galaxy Note 9 storage variants and their prices. It was rumored a few times that there’s going to be a 512GB Galaxy Note 9 and the report claims that it will indeed be available. Another interesting claim made is that the base model, which previously had 64GB of internal storage, will now have 128GB onboard.

That’s going to be a big step up for Samsung’s flagship phablet and its smartphone lineup as a whole. Customers will get considerable bang for their buck in the storage department but the prices mentioned in the report will likely make some customers think twice before purchasing the device.

512GB Galaxy Note 9 price

Previous rumors suggested that the 512GB Galaxy Note 9 would also feature 8GB of RAM. The report doesn’t mention anything about the RAM, only that there’s going to be a 512GB model which will be available in black or blue colors. The 512GB Galaxy Note 9 price in Europe will reportedly be 1250 euro ($1460).

The base model is the one that most customers will purchase. Samsung fans will be happy that it may feature 128GB of internal storage instead of 64GB. The Galaxy Note 8’s base model has 64GB storage as many of you will be well aware. It’s reportedly going to be available in black, blue and purple colors at launch in Europe for 1050 euro ($1230).

It goes without saying that these prices and color options are for the European market. Samsung may offer additional colors in other markets and the price will obviously vary by market depending on many factors.

The Galaxy Note 9 will be firmly beyond the $1000 threshold it seems. Even if the prices in your region aren’t an exact conversion of the figures mentioned above, you can expect the Galaxy Note 9 price to be in this range, give or take a few.

Do you think that the bigger battery, S Pen with new features, more storage, Bixby 2.0 and camera improvements are worth the price that Samsung may charge for the Galaxy Note 9?

Samsung’s Bixby speaker is called Magbee, or is it?

You will be seeing reports on different publications today about a trademark listing from Samsung potentially confirming the name of its much awaited Bixby-powered speaker. Samsung has filed to trademark the moniker “Magbee” in the United States and Europe.

The moniker is apparently shorthand for magnetic beetle which doesn’t really make a lot of sense with respect to a smart speaker. Dig deeper into these listings and it becomes clear that it’s far from certain that this is what Samsung’s smart speaker will be called or when it’s going to be released.

Samsung’s Bixby speaker

Companies have a habit of trademarking names that they might use in the future. Even if they don’t have plans of ever using a particular name they just trademark it just in case something changes down the line.

That’s likely the case with this listing as well. The description provided in the filing mentions that this brand many be used for a variety of products. The list includes LED TVs, digital door locks, portable computers, set-top boxes and indeed “audio speakers.”

The fact remains, though, that the listing doesn’t confirm that Samsung’s Bixby speaker will be called Magbee. It’s pertinent to mention here that the Magbee brand and the associated beetle logo were first spotted in the trademark listings back in December 2017. Samsung has filed the paperwork again in other markets which is why you’re now seeing reports about Magbee.

Yes, there’s no doubt that Samsung is working on a Bixby-powered smart speaker. We have exclusively confirmed some of the features that it’s likely going to bring as well. The thing with these filings is that they’re never 100 percent accurate.

We often pick up on interesting bits of information in trademark and regulatory filings but there’s always the chance that the information may not be completely relevant to the product that the rumor mill associates it with. This appears to be the case with this Magbee filing as well.

More details and images of Samsung’s new dual wireless charger leaked online

As the Galaxy Note 9 launch event inches closer, more and more leaks are flooding the internet. Just a couple of days back, a picture of the alleged new Samsung dual wireless charger box leaked online. It showed a new design which allows users to charge two devices at once. Today, folks at LetsGoDigital have published new pictures and additional information about the new wireless charger.

We already know from the previous leak that the new model will be referred to as the ‘Wireless Charger Duo.’ As reported previously, the new model can simultaneously charge two Qi-certified devices at once. They can be either two smartphones or a smartphone and a smartwatch. It is obvious Samsung made this charger to complement the upcoming Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Watch smartwatch.

Wireless Charger Duo will reportedly be priced at €75

Samsung Wireless Charger Duo

Both slots on the Samsung Wireless Charger Duo support fast charging, but the leak doesn’t offer any technical details about the charging speeds. We have to wait and see if the new model comes with improved charging speeds to complement the mammoth 4000 mAh battery in the Note 9.

The new charger will be reportedly priced at €75 when launched, which puts it more or less in the same price range as the previous models. We can expect the new charger to be announced along with the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J8 sales hit the 2 million mark in India

Samsung has revealed that the Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J8 have collectively sold more than two million units in India since they went on sale. Samsung isn’t assigning individual figures to either device, but we’re guessing the Galaxy J6 was the more popular model, partly because it went on sale a month ahead of the Galaxy J8.

Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J8 hit it big in India

The Galaxy J6 is indeed one of Samsung’s best affordable Android phones in recent years, one that we can easily recommend. The Galaxy J8 doesn’t offer as much value, as you will find out in our upcoming review. Both devices do stand out thanks to the Infinity displays, however. Chinese OEMs were quick to switch to the so-called all-screen design for their budget phones in India, and Samsung didn’t take long to counter those with its own offerings. These phones also get a few India-specific features, like the ability to respond to SMS and WhatsApp messages while watching a video and the Samsung Mall app, which acts as a one-stop store for various popular online retail websites.

It’s unclear if the Galaxy J6 and J8 had a major role in helping Samsung recapture its share in India. Since the Galaxy J8 was released nearly a month after the Galaxy J6, it’s likely the latter had a bigger hand. Samsung also says the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+ have seen “equally buoyant demand,” which is rather surprising considering neither phone is priced well enough to be truly attractive to consumers in a price-sensitive market like India.

New Gear S3 update should fix battery charging and overheating issues

Samsung is pushing out yet another update to the Gear S3 as we wait for the arrival of its true successor. And it’s an important one, too, if you were one of the unlucky people who were having problems charging their Gear S3 to 100 percent without the watch throwing up overheating warnings. The issue has been fixed with the new update, which mentions that it includes changes to the battery charging algorithms.

Gear S3 update fixes battery charging issue

For those unaware, some Gear S3 smartwatches weren’t charging to 100 percent in one go after the Tizen 3.0 update. The watch would overheat and stop charging at 90 percent, following which it had to be taken off the charger so it could cool down. It then needed to be put on the charger once again so the battery could reach 100 percent charge. An annoying issue, as many have pointed out in our forums and in various other groups, especially since Tizen 3.0 also reduced the overall battery endurance of the watch for many users. Samsung has released a few updates to fix battery life, but not everyone has reported positive changes following those updates.

The update also includes the usual stability improvements and is 16 MB in size. The build number is R760XXU2CRG3 and R770XXU2CRG3 for the Gear S3 frontier and the Gear S3 classic respectively. You should be able to download it from the About Gear » Update Gear software section in the Settings tab of the Samsung Gear app on your phone.

Do let us know if the update fixes your Gear S3’s battery issues.

Samsung’s new ads target the ‘double dongle’ life and other iPhone limitations

Samsung is back with new advertisements that poke fun at the iPhone and arch-rival Apple as part of the Ingenius series. The name is a play on the Genius Bar found in Apple stores, where employees are tasked with providing support to consumers and also give them a reason to buy the iPhone. And the four ads that have been released on YouTube talk about a different aspect of the iPhone and how the Galaxy S9 does it better, telling us to “upgrade to Galaxy.”

Gist of the ads? The Galaxy S9 does it better

The first ad was released earlier last week and has the consumer straight up pointing out the fact that the iPhone X doesn’t have the fastest download speeds. The employee’s answer? “But it is faster than the iPhone 8.” It’s a somewhat silly ad considering download speeds aren’t a feature the average consumer looks for when shopping for a new phone, but the other three ads are rather spot on.

The funniest one is the one where a guy asks what he is supposed to do when he wants to use his wired headphones and charge the iPhone at the same time. A “double dongle” is the solution, following which the consumer throws in a double entendre by saying “that sounds explicit.” This is probably the one that hits the hardest, even though the headphone jack has been removed from their flagships by more than just Apple.

The other two videos talk about the camera and the lack of a fast charger in the iPhone X retail box. In the former, the employee himself points out that the customer has been reading DxOMark scores, where the Galaxy S9 scores higher. The fast charger ad, meanwhile, makes fun of the fact that the consumer has to first buy a USB Type-C to Lightning cable and then splurge on Apple’s official fast charger to take advantage of fast charging, a feature that debuted on the tenth-anniversary iPhone.

Bixby 2.0 to work with third-party apps on the Galaxy Note 9

Samsung launched its Bixby virtual assistant with the Galaxy S8 last year. It claimed that the assistant was able to do almost everything in response to a voice command that the user could do by tapping on the display. You can ask it to scroll down on a page and it will comply, for example.

While Bixby can be used to launch third-party apps, it can’t do much inside those apps. If you tell Bixby to compose a new email even when you’re in the Gmail app, it will open Samsung’s native Email app. According to a new report, Bixby 2.0 will be able to work with third-party apps on the Galaxy Note 9.

Bixby 2.0

Samsung is going to launch Bixby 2.0 with the Galaxy Note 9. The company itself confirmed this several months ago. Bixby 2.0 is going to be a “bold reinvention” of the platform according to the company as it wants to transform the assistant into an intelligence tool.

The report from South Korea claims that Samsung will offer an API and SDK to developers who want to enable Bixby to perform tasks in their apps. Given that Bixby is a permanent fixture on Samsung’s flagship smartphones of which the company sells millions, many developers will likely show an interest in baking Bixby into their apps and services.

It’s also claimed that Bixby 2.0 will have quicker response times and improved artificial intelligence features. Its ability to provide a customized experience based on user data has reportedly been improved as well.

Samsung has made no secret of the fact that it wants to connect many of its devices to the Bixby ecosystem. This report reiterates the company’s desire to have the assistant running on consumer electronics devices such as TVs and refrigerators as well as home appliances. Samsung is also going to launch a Bixby-powered smart speaker which is going to have additional features that will position it as a high-end audio product backed up by Samsung’s virtual assistant.

Early Galaxy Note 9 unboxing video shows the possible retail box contents

Well, it was only a matter of time before the Galaxy Note 9 would appear in a proper video leak, following the leaks last week that showed the device in the flesh in various images. Only it’s unclear whether we’re actually looking at the real deal or possibly some sort of a knockoff. There are quite a few things here that make us suspicious, including the apparent inclusion of a screen protector in the retail box.

Galaxy Note 9 gets early unboxing

Samsung started putting a free case in its retail boxes in some markets last year, but a screen protector would make little sense as they aren’t easy to install for regular consumers. Some of the design elements seem off as well, starting with that big blue 9 over the Galaxy Note 9 inscription on the plastic that covers the device out of the box. The same goes for the white lettering on the rear of the box, which is too bright. And there’s a microUSB to USB Type-C converter inside, which is also a red flag since Samsung didn’t offer this converter with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The phone itself seems to be an actual Galaxy Note 9, though.

The specs of the back of the box match those that are expected, although the camera details don’t mention Dual Aperture or the Super Speed lens that makes Super Slow-mo video recording possible (both are mentioned on the Galaxy S9 box). The rest seems correct, including the 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, an iris scanner, 8-megapixel selfie camera, and IP68 water and dust resistance.

Of course, it’s possible Samsung has actually made the visual changes to the packaging (and decided to offer the microUSB to Type-C converter once again). With less than three weeks to go for the official Galaxy Note 9 Unpacked event, all these leaks are likely to show the finalized design for both the phone and its box. Not that the proverbial salt container shouldn’t be kept handy, as nothing is truly official until Samsung makes it so.

Check out the unboxing video and let us know what you think.

AR Emoji update adds more customization options

Samsung launched its “3D emoji” feature called AR Emoji with the Galaxy S9 earlier this year. The company said at the launch that it has been working on this feature for a few years. AR Emoji creates a digital avatar of the user which tracks their facial movements.

The company continues to update this feature with new characters and options. The latest AR Emoji update has now been revealed by Samsung and it brings additional customization options.

AR Emoji update

Samsung reveals that the latest AR Emoji update brings improved facial tracking in addition to new customization options that will allow users to better capture their individuality. The new My Emoji Editor feature provides simple tools to fine-tune distinguishing characteristics such as the eyes, lips, nose, cheeks and other facial features.

Once users take a selfie to generate their AR Emoji after this update, they will be able to to make detailed adjustments to their digital avatar’s ears, hair and facial features. This will allow them to adjust the shape of the avatar’s face to closely mirror their own.

The latest AR Emoji update also improves its face-tracking function. Samsung mentions a 65 percent increase in “landmark detector” points. What this means is that AR Emoji will be able to track the movement of the eyes and mouth even more precisely. The update delivers a frame rate boost as well to recreate movements that feel smoother and more natural.

This AR Emoji update will soon be rolling out in markets across the globe.
