Samsung remained the leader in global smartphone shipments for Q4 and 2015

The latest preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker reveals that smartphone vendors shipped 399.5 million units combined in the fourth quarter of 2015 which is a 5.7% increase when compared to the same period last year. For the full year global smartphone shipments crossed 1.4 billion units for the first time, 1432.9 million units to be precise, a record 10.1% increase from the 1301.7 million units shipped in 2014. Samsung remained the global leader in smartphone shipments for the quarter and the year despite the fact that in its Q4 2015 earnings release the company attributes the slight dip in operating profit to decrease in smartphone sales.

IDC’s data shows that Samsung shipped 85.6 million units in Q4 2015 which is a 14% increase from the same time last year. For the entire year Samsung’s smartphone shipments come in at 324.8 million units and that’s a meager 2.1% increase from the 318.2 million units shipped in 2014. IDC notes that Samsung will face a multi-front battle in the months ahead as it comes under increasing pressure from Apple in the high-end segment of the market and from Chinese vendors in the low-end to mid-range segment of the market. No wonder Samsung expects global growth to remain tough in 2016.

Samsung announces fourth quarter financial results

Samsung today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2015. The company raked in KRW 53.32 trillion ($44 billion) in consolidated revenue and posted KRW 6.14 trillion ($5.04 billion) in operating profit for the quarter. The company notes that its fourth quarter earnings have dipped quarter-over-quarter and it blames economic headwinds including the sharp fall in oil prices over the past year whereas its components business was hit by weakened prices for DRM chips and LCD panels as demand remained soft in the PC and IT markets. Samsung’s consolidated revenue for the previous quarter came in at KRW 51.68 trillion ($45.6 billion) with KRW 7.49 trillion ($6.42 billion) in operating profit.

Samsung’s mobile division is one of its main cash cows but it does appear to be struggling. In Q4 2015 it brought in KRW 25 trillion ($20.65 billion) in consolidated revenue with KRW 2.23 trillion ($1.8 billion) in operating profit as opposed to KRW 2.4 trillion ($2.1 billion) in operating profit in Q3 2015. The company mentions that it saw a slight quarter-over-quarter decrease in smartphone shipments due to year-end inventory adjustment with the increased portion of mid to low-end products also contributing to the decline in sales. Given that this quarter covers the holiday season the traditional increase in marketing expenditure has slightly impacted operating profit as well. Samsung notes that quarterly shipments and sales of its tablets increased due to seasonal demand and steady sales of the Galaxy Tab A and the Galaxy Tab S2.

The company has previously said that it expects global growth for its business to remain tough in 2016 and it reiterates that sentiment in its latest earnings release. Samsung expects single-digit percentage growth in smartphone and tablet categories as demand softens and competition intensifies. It says that despite this challenging environment it’s going to focus on increasing smartphone shipments and maintaining double-digit margin through an optimized product portfolio and releases of competitive devices. Samsung is particularly focused on the premium smartphone market where it wants to reinforce its market leadership and drive growth with new and differentiated products.

Pay for one Samsung flagship and get the other half-off at T-Mobile

The third largest mobile carrier in the United States has launched a new promotion today which is going to appeal to those who would like to purchase a Samsung flagship. Under this promotion customers only have to pay full price for one handset as the carrier will give them half-off on the other. Eligible smartphones include the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5.

This promotion is open to all new and existing customers of T-Mobile provided they purchase a Samsung smartphone either at full retail price or on an installment plan. 50% discount on the second handset is applied immediately at the point of sale. Those who would like to place an order will either have to visit a T-Mobile store or call the carrier because it’s not offering online sales. T-Mobile is yet to confirm how long this promotion will be available for but if you’re interested in this deal it would be best if you don’t waste too much time in picking up your desired Samsung flagship.

Unofficial Telegram client for the Samsung Z3 makes its way onto the Tizen Store

When compared to Android, iOS and Windows Phone, Tizen is a relatively new operating system that, up until last year, hadn’t made its way into the mass smartphone market. However, Samsung’s release of the Z1 in India on February 6, 2015, changed all that. As expected, there were no complaints about the fluidity of the software, nor its design. The only qualms that came from customers were over the severe lack of applications available for the platform. That didn’t last long, though, and after a couple of months, all the core services that you’d expect to find on a modern-day handset were up for grabs from the Tizen Store, including Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

Telegram is the latest application to be ported to Tizen’s Store, but there are two main drawbacks. The first is that it’s not an official client. It has been created by an independent developer who has taken the Linux API and adapted it for use on Tizen. The second is that it’s only available for the latest Tizen-powered smartphone, the Samsung Z3, which, at present, has only launched in India, but is anticipated to debut in a handful of European countries later this year.

As you’d imagine, Telegram for Tizen’s design is identical to all of the other messaging service’s applications, which means that if you currently use it on desktop or a different mobile OS, you should feel right at home when installing it on your Z3. Any messages sent are thankfully synchronized across all your devices that have Telegram installed — so you should instantly be able to access your chat history once you’ve signed into your account.

To install the application on your Samsung Z3, navigate to the Tizen Store, search for Telegram, then install the very first application that appears on the list.

Despite dismal performance Samsung’s mobile division employees will receive hefty bonuses

It’s not a secret that Samsung’s mobile division is struggling and the company doesn’t expect things to significantly turnaround this year however that won’t stop Samsung Electronics from retaining the 50% ceiling for employee bonuses at its mobile division. A “high-ranking Samsung executive” has confirmed to The Korea Times that employees at the company’s mobile division will receive 50% of their annual salaries “as compensation for their sincere contribution to keeping the division running despite numerous challenges.” Employees of Samsung’s mobile division will receive this additional bonus amount this month.

Samsung normally pays employees at all of its divisions up to 50% of their annual salaries if their division turns a profit that exceeds internal targets set at the start of the year but that really can’t be said for its mobile division. The company executive agrees that last year the handset division’s performance wasn’t strong but argues that it fared well amid rising challenges like the meteoric rise of Chinese vendors and increased pressure in the high-end segment. “The mobile division is worthy of being rewarded,” says the unnamed executive, adding that the mobile division remains Samsung’s biggest cash cow along with the memory chip business. Giving a hefty bonus is just Samsung’s way of motivating workers through “proper compensation.”

Samsung spent $30 billion on semiconductors last year

Samsung didn’t only lead the pack in research and development expenditure last year it also retained its top spot as the world’s largest buyer of semiconductors. The latest numbers from Gartner reveal that Samsung spent $29.867 billion on semiconductors in 2015. Even though that’s massive it’s still slightly lower than the $30.989 billion Samsung spent on semiconductors in 2014. Despite the slight dip in spending it has managed to retain its top spot on the list while Apple comes in second place with $29.116 billion in 2015 as opposed to $27.177 billion in 2014.

The data shows that the top ten companies spent about $123 billion combined on semiconductors in the past year and accounted for 36.9% of the entire market with Samsung leading with an 8.9% market share. Apple came quite close with an 8.7% market share. Principal research analyst at Gartner Masatsune Yamaji says that the decline in Samsung’s spending should be considered as a big trend change. Yamaji points out that it’s more difficult for leading companies to maintain their position for a long time, “current winners may not always be the winners in the future,” he predicts.

Samsung may not unveil the Galaxy S7 edge+ next month

Three weeks ago we exclusively revealed the screen sizes of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch respectively, aside from some of the specifications of the upcoming flagships. Recently a model of the Galaxy S7 with a 5.7-inch display was spotted online. For all we know it could be a prototype of the Galaxy S7 edge+ since most of the rumors that are floating around these days are based on prototypes after all. Word on the street is that Samsung has decided to postpone the launch of this handset, meaning that it’s only going to unveil the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge at MWC 2016 next month, the Galaxy S7 edge+ might arrive a few months later.

It won’t be surprising if Samsung launches the Galaxy S7 edge+ later this year because even though the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge were both announced at MWC 2015 in March last year the Galaxy S6 edge+ wasn’t unveiled until August 2015. Samsung is likely to formally reveal its new flagships the day before Mobile World Congress 2016 kicks off in February and according to a recent report, it may also announce a phone upgrade program with the new handsets.

SmartThings helps parents cool down their teenager’s hormones in latest video

Teenagers and their hormones is an eternal discussion that has been going on since before the time when someone named the famous parent/child discussion “the birds and the bees.” The latest Samsung SmartThings video shows parents how to cool down their teenagers’ hormones without being aware of “the rising flame.” A father, away from his home, can turn down the temperature of the room, among other things.

Samsung’s SmartThings Hub is the company’s IoT source by which the Korean giant hopes to have consumers connect everything in their home, from thermostats to air conditioning and heating, to their Smart TV, smartphone, and even laptop computers (not to mention home appliances such as ovens, microwaves, washers and dryers). Samsung acquired SmartThings back in August 2014 and pledged to keep it open source at the time. With Samsung’s move to bring the Gear S2 to iOS, its introduction of the Windows Mobile-powered TabPro S, as well as the decision to bring its entire app collection to iOS, Samsung’s best move forward is cross-platform (and SmartThings is the center of all its efforts).

In addition to cooling down teenager hormones, the Korean giant also wants you to use SmartThings to keep an eye on your “burglar” children, help your mutt lose weight, and turn off your iron to avoid home disasters. “Now you know you know.”

Cool off your teenager’s hormones at the video and link below.

How to boot your Samsung Galaxy device into Safe Mode

Unfortunately, it happens. You install a whole bunch of brand new apps on your smartphone and things suddenly start conflicting. Or you update your Galaxy, and now existing applications have become buggy. Or the battery drains faster than it did before. Or the camera app crashes. Or. Or. Or. Galaxy devices, like all other smartphones, are complex, and bugs can arise.

In order to determine whether a particular problem is caused by your Galaxy phone and its more fundamental software (e.g. the operating system), or by applications you yourself installed, you can run the device in safe mode. In this mode, you can test your phone as if it was a clean device without any user added apps. If your problem persists, the issue is either hardware or operating system related. If everything is fine in safe mode, the bug was likely caused by some user-installed application.

However, this article is not here to diagnose the exact problem your Galaxy device might be having. We’re here to explain how to boot your phone into safe mode. The procedure is very simple, once you know how it’s done:

  • Turn off your Galaxy. Wait shortly to ensure it really has completely shut down.
  • Start your phone normally by pressing the power button
  • Once the device logo appears, press and hold the volume down key, don’t hold down the power button
  • Hold the volume down button until the device’s lock screen appears
  • Down in the bottom left corner the words ‘Safe mode’ confirm that you have successfully booted into, well, the safe mode

Also, a notification will appear telling you the safe mode is, in fact, enabled. Tap this notification to get the option to restart your Galaxy device into normal mode, once you figure out where the problem might lie. We have not specified the exact Galaxy device you can boot into the safe mode using the above outlined steps. This method works on all fairly recent Galaxy devices.
