Is it a good idea to encrypt SD card on Samsung Galaxy Note 9?

If you have been using a Samsung smartphone for quite some time then you will already be aware of how to encrypt SD card on Samsung devices. The procedure aside, is it really a good idea to encrypt the SD card on your device? You should certainly give it more thought if you are using an SD card.

Encrypt SD card on Samsung Galaxy Note 9

The real benefit of encrypting an SD card is that no one else can access what’s on it unless the card is in the device that was used to encrypt it. Not only that, the SD card won’t reveal its contents until that device is unlocked. Nobody will be able to access the files on the card unless it’s decrypted or accessed using the device it was encrypted on.

This guarantees data security if you ever lose the card, someone steals it or it gets stolen with your phone. Nobody can simply take it out and put it inside another device to access its contents. They would have to format it first before they can copy something else on it.

Herein lies the problem with encrypted SD cards. If your phone gets damaged beyond repair then there’s no way to recover the data on the card. It would only be usable again once it’s formatted which would erase all data.

Thus the responsibility falls on your shoulders to make backups elsewhere or you run the risk of losing all data on the encrypted SD card should something happen to your phone. Remember, the card can only be decrypted on the device that it was encrypted on.

Procedure

If you understand the risks involved and would like to encrypt SD card on Samsung Galaxy Note 9 then follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Settings app and enter the Biometric and Security menu

Step 2: Scroll down and select the Encrypt SD card option. Tap on Encrypt SD card and the process will begin once you have entered your password or PIN, if you have one configured

The process can take up an hour or more depending on how much content you have on the card. The microSD card can not be used during the encryption process. Bear in mind that the device will be unable to read the encrypted microSD card if it’s reset to factory default settings. The same procedure can be used to decrypt the SD card as well.

Samsung Opera House Bengaluru, India is the company’s largest retail store ever

Samsung has massively increased its presence in India over the years. It is currently the leading brand in the country across multiple product categories. Its investments in India have gone beyond selling products as the company now sees the country as the export hub to manufacture many of its products. The company made its intentions clear when it opened its largest mobile factory in the world in Noida, India, in July this year.

Continuing its efforts to strengthen its position in the country, Samsung has opened its largest retail store ever and “the world’s largest mobile experience centre” called Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru today. The company renovated and restored the iconic 33,000 square feet colonial Opera House property on Brigade Road over two years to transform it into a grand center, the first of its kind in India, for displaying its innovative products and services.

We went to the Samsung Opera House launch event today and found many similarities to the well-known Samsung 837 experience center in New York. The Samsung Opera House is spread across two floors and showcases a wide range of products, services, and experiences from Samsung and its subsidiaries. It is a one-stop shop to discover, experience, and buy Samsung products.

The ground floor is mostly reserved for the Galaxy smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Samsung’s entire smartphone lineup from its budget devices to flagship models are on display. All the tables where the smartphones are displayed feature a proximity sensor which detects a visitor walk-in and automatically displays the model specifications on a display strip in front of the device. The company has also created a separate section for a large collection for its device accessories.

Visitors can enjoy immersive VR experiences

Smartphones and wearable products are accompanied by compelling fitness and VR experiences. Visitors can try gamified VR fitness experiences powered by Samsung’s Gear Fit Pro and flagship Galaxy smartphones. The center also has immersive VR experiences such as the Whiplash Pulsar 4D chair to showcase the company’s VR offerings. Curved monitors and speakers from Samsung and its subsidiary, Harman, are the other highlights on the ground floor.

The top floor is dominated by home and kitchen appliances from Samsung. The space where the company’s TVs are displayed is designed like a living room to offer a realistic experience while exploring the products. The main attraction on the top floor is the home theatre zone, equipped with the best Samsung has to offer for media consumption. Customers can pre-book this zone for watching movies with family members but details about the process are a bit scarce right now.

Similar to other experience centers around the world, Samsung Opera House also has a section for quick after-sales service of hand-held products. Though IoT and Artificial Intelligence have become buzzwords found in every press release, there weren’t any compelling IoT experiences on display. Sure, there were all the Samsung smart devices that can communicate with each other at a rudimentary level, but there was no demo or experience that showcased the promise and potential of an IoT ecosystem powered by Samsung devices.

Samsung wants to make this center more than an outlet for sales and service. It intends to conduct many events focused on fitness, photography, cooking, music, start-ups, stand-up comedy, gaming, and more at the center throughout the year. The attempt is to transform the center from a store to a lifestyle destination for the young generation.

Silver Galaxy Note 9 color option breaks cover in leaked render

It appears that Samsung has a new color option for the Galaxy Note 9 up its sleeve. A leaked render of the device suggests that a silver Galaxy Note 9 might arrive soon. It’s said that this color option will only be offered in the United States. Samsung currently offers the Galaxy Note 9 in Ocean Blue and Lavender Purple colors in the country.

It is as yet unknown what this new color option for the Galaxy Note 9 will be called. The color itself is quite similar to the Arctic Silver option that was offered with the Galaxy S8 last year. The Galaxy Note 8 wasn’t available in this color.

Silver Galaxy Note 9

The Galaxy Note 9 can also be picked up in Metallic Copper and Midnight Black in other markets. The report doesn’t say if this new color option will be made available to customers outside the United States. It also doesn’t mention if the silver color will be for both the 128GB and 512GB models or would it be limited to just one.

It won’t be surprising if Samsung comes out with a new color for its flagship smartphone a couple of months after it has been released. The company is known for launching new color options to drive sales once a new flagship hits the market.

Don’t expect any additional changes in the device. Everything else will remain the same if the report about a silver Galaxy Note 9 does indeed turn out to be true. The device will have all of the specs and features that existing owners know and love. It won’t cost more than what Samsung is currently charging for the Galaxy Note 9 as well which is $999 for the base 128GB model in the United States.

What do you think about a silver color option for the Galaxy Note 9? If you haven’t purchased the device yet would you consider buying it in silver?

Set a Live Wallpaper on your Galaxy Note 9 for added visual flair

It has been possible to set Live Wallpapers on an Android device for the better part of a decade. Samsung smartphones are no exception but the company doesn’t put the option to use them front and center. You actually have to dig into a couple of menus to get to the point where you can set up a Live Wallpaper on your device. If you’re not sure about the steps involved, this guide will teach you how to set a Live Wallpaper on Galaxy Note 9.

Set Live Wallpaper on Galaxy Note 9

Live Wallpapers need to be downloaded first before they can be used on the device. The easiest and the safest way to do that is through the Google Play Store. You’ll find plenty of free and paid options there.

Step 1: Open Settings after a Live Wallpaper is downloaded and go to the Wallpapers and Themes menu.

Step 2: Tap on View All under the Wallpapers heading. Access the overflow menu from the top right corner and then tap on Live Wallpapers.

Step 3: Select the Live Wallpaper that you installed. You will then be given the option to either set it as the wallpaper for the Home Screen or both Home and Lock Screen.

That’s how you set a Live Wallpaper on Galaxy Note 9. The process is simple enough and doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes. Do share some of your favorite Live Wallpapers with us in the comments below. Check out our other Galaxy Note 9 tips for more information on how to get the most out of your device.

Galaxy Xcover 4 Android 8.1 Oreo update released

Samsung has started rolling out the Android 8.1 Oreo update to the Galaxy Xcover 4 in a number of Asian countries. The Xcover 4 is one of few devices that have been updated to Android 8.1 and not Android 8.0, but the list of such devices should increase in the coming weeks. The Galaxy Xcover 4 Oreo update is currently available in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Galaxy Xcover 4 makes the jump to Android 8.1 Oreo

The Xcover 4 Oreo update includes the August 2018 security patch (the Galaxy J5 (2017), meanwhile, got the September patch with the Android 8.1 update today). It will also have version 9.5 of the Samsung Experience UX, same as the Galaxy Note 9. The number of new features, however, will be fewer for the Xcover 4 since it’s a budget phone. To see what these features and changes are, you can take a look at our What’s New With Android 8.0 Oreo articles.

If you’re in one of the countries mentioned above, you should be able to download the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on your Galaxy Xcover 4. Alternatively, you can download the firmware from our website and upgrade using your laptop or desktop computer. Should you notice anything new or different after updating, or are getting the update in another country, do let us know in the comments!

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is codenamed ‘Da Vinci’

It’s been less than a month since the Galaxy Note 9 went on sale and we’re already hearing rumors about the Galaxy Note 10. As expected, it’s the codename of the device that is the subject of this early rumor. According to leakster Ice Universe, the Galaxy Note 10 has been codenamed “Da Vinci”. Could it be a play on how the Galaxy Note flagships are the best multi-purpose smartphones, similar to how Leonardo da Vinci is known to have been a man of many talents?

Galaxy Note 10 rumors are already here

It sounds plausible, especially with how the Galaxy Note 9 – which was codenamed ‘Crown’ – is packed to the brim with features and is great at pretty much everything a smartphone is supposed to do. It could also simply be a hint at a major design upgrade for the Galaxy Note 10 (and the Galaxy S10), given how Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous work is the painting of the Mona Lisa.

But the Galaxy Note 10 is still a year away, so whether Da Vinci is actually its codename is something only time will tell. Most reports about the codenames of future Galaxy flagships usually come from Korean publications (and sometimes from our sources as well), and hopefully another such report will come out in the near future to shed more light on the matter.

What do you think this rumored Galaxy Note 10 codename could mean? Sound off in the comments!

Galaxy J5 (2017) Android 8.1 update for the UAE includes September 2018 security patch

The first Galaxy device to be getting the September 2018 Android security patch is the Galaxy J5 (2017). The J5 (2017) was updated to Android 8.1 Oreo nearly a month ago, and Samsung has now expanded availability of the Oreo update to the UAE. The phone is also getting the September security patch as part of this Android 8.1 Oreo update. Galaxy J5 (2017) owners shouldn’t get too excited, however, as Samsung is still releasing Android 7.0-based updates for the device in some markets.

First September 2018 security patch update is out

Samsung has taken slightly longer than usual this month to kick off things with the latest security update. That might be because the company updated more devices than usual with the August 2018 security patch, including quick updates for all of its recent flagship phones. Whether September sees a similar outcome remains to be seen. The September update is certainly an important one, as it brings fixes for a higher number of critical vulnerabilities in Android than recent months. 18 vulnerabilities that pose danger to only Samsung’s software have also been fixed with the latest patch.

To download the update on your Galaxy J5 (2017), open the phone’s Settings app, tap Software update, then tap Download updates manually. You can also update your phone by downloading the firmware from our database.
