Is this our first look at the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge?

We are finally getting a look at what could be the final design of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Evleaks has released two images that show the phones from the front; the images looks somewhat photoshopped (see the slanted home button on the regular S7 in the first image?), but they do appear to have be very close to the real deal.

The home button is also less round than on current devices, though not as squarish as the one seen in leaked renders and concepts. The February 21 date mentioned on the lockscreen points to the date the S7 is expected to go official, with a new wallpaper that is darker than the wallpapers Samsung has used as default on its flagships before.

Even if these images aren’t fully accurate, don’t be surprised if the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge look like this – very similar to the Galaxy S6 lineup. From early on it was reported that Samsung won’t be making notable changes to the design, and all the impressive changes are expected to be under the hood, with features like a microSD slot, larger batteries, and possibly water-resistance.

What do you think of these images? Fake? Almost real? Something else? Let us know in the comments!

Samsung updates its Smart Switch desktop software, indicates Marshmallow rollout is imminent

Samsung has just started rolling out a rather nifty update for its Smart Switch client for Mac and PC. This upgrade brings support for Android 6.0 Marshmallow, in addition to the usual truck load of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations we’ve come to expect from any new software update.

Just in case you’re unfamiliar with Smart Switch, it’s a fully fledged migration suite which not only enables you to move contacts, documents, music, photos, videos, calendar events, text messages, calls logs, memos, alerts, wallpapers and Wi-Fi settings from any Android-, BlackBerry- or iOS-powered smartphone to a new Galaxy-branded device, but permits you to upgrade your handset’s software, too.

At this precise moment in time, the update isn’t particularly useful to anyone with access to the software as Samsung hasn’t yet begun rolling out the Marshmallow update to any of its lineup, but it is a pretty good indication that the company could soon start doing so. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge should be getting Android 6.0 first as the two devices were treated to a Marshmallow beta test, followed by devices like the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+.

Galaxy S7 European availability tipped to begin March 11

Being the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung has the resources and the will to make its new flagships available worldwide on the same day. The company took a diversion with the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ last year by launching them in the US and South Korea a few days before other markets, but it looks set to get back on course with the Galaxy S7 lineup.

According to a leakster said to have a decent track record with inside information, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will go on sale in Europe on March 11. That is the same day that the handsets are rumored to become available in the US, which would mark yet another time when a Samsung flagship would hit stores at the same time in multiple countries. Even Chinese carrier China Mobile had listed a March release for the S7.

Hopefully, this year will also see the Korean giant making sure that all the storage and color variants of its newest hero devices will be more easily accessible, something that has been a point of contention with all the four Galaxy flagships that came out last year. A little over three weeks remain before the Galaxy S7 family will go official, and future leaks are likely to shed more light on their retail availability.

Kernel source code hints at fingerprint sensor on Galaxy J7 (2016), reveals specs

Last Wednesday, Samsung’s Galaxy J7 (2016) broke cover when it appeared on the GFXBench website. It’s pretty safe to say that we were impressed by the alterations the South Korean company made to the device in order to secure it a place at the top of the mid-range market. Today we’ve got a second chance to view the handset’s internals, this time by way of a kernel source code, which confirms almost everything we’ve already found out about the unit. The only thing that seems to differ is the processor, which looks like it’s been upgraded from the Snapdragon 615 SoC that we previously reported.

According to the source code, the upcoming J7 will pack a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 650 octa-core CPU (previously known as the Snapdragon 620), 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with a Samsung S5K3L2XX sensor, a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter with a Samsung S5K5E3YX sensor and a 4,300mAh removable battery. Interestingly, the kernel also suggests that the handset will feature a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button, which will be a first for budget-friendly smartphones from Samsung and support rumors of the company aiming to bring fingerprint scanners to cheaper devices.

As with all leaks, rumors and speculation, we have to take this information with a large grain of salt until the manufacturer provides us with some solid evidence with regards to what it has in store for its next version of the Galaxy J7. However, if Samsung’s comprehensive launch history is anything to go by, it looks like the firm may unveil the handset in June.

How to create a memo on your Galaxy Note 5 when the display is off

Calling all Galaxy Note 5 owners! Did you know that you can record all your snippets of information in Action memo even when your handset’s display is powered down? It’s one of the best features introduced on the Galaxy Note lineup, and it can let you jot down information in a jiffy without going through the motions of waking up your phone, unlocking it, and then firing up Action memo.

It’s super easy to set up, too. Here’s how:

  1. Simply head into Settings.
  2. Tap S Pen.
  3. Ensure that Screen off memo is turned ON under the Pen detachment section.

That’s all there is to it. Now when you pull the S Pen out of your Note 5 whilst the screen is off, you’ll see a black notepad appear on the screen. Simply scribble down what you have to remember, hit save, then it will be there waiting for you the next time you head into S Memo.

Galaxy S7 gets 17 hours of video playback, says latest leak

The Galaxy S7 is soon to arrive on the scene, with all rumors pointing to a pre-MWC 2016 launch. While we’ve seen countless statements that point to a quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor (and, of course, Samsung’s Exynos 8890), 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 5.1-inch display (5.5-inch display for the Galaxy S7 edge), 12MP BRITECELL back camera and 5MP wide angle selfie camera (both with f/1.7 apertures), and Android Marshmallow (of course), we don’t know much about the Galaxy S7’s performance outside of benchmark scores and the usual specs.

That changes, however, with the latest tweet from popular leakster Eldar Murtazin, who got the tech world rattled two years ago this week with his claim that Google would kill its Nexus line in 2015, and often gets devices for review before anyone else. Fortunately, he’s back to announce some good news for one of Google’s OEMs and its upcoming device(s).

Galaxy S7 video playback 17 hours

According to Eldar Murtazin, the Galaxy S7 gets 17 hours or more of video playback, “with maximum backlight.” Keep in mind that this is just the battery stat for video playback. Video playback at maximum brightness is more draining on a device than just web browsing and basic usage, so one can only imagine what the average usage time will be for light to moderate device interaction.

The Galaxy S7’s battery potential will help users forget what some have said was nothing short of disappointing battery life in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The Galaxy S6 Active with its 3,500mAh battery gets about 10-11 hours of video playback with Netflix, so the Galaxy S7 with its 3,000mAh battery will provide even more video playback time and battery life overall than last year’s “Galaxy S6 Manly Edition,” as one Samsung fan has called it. Some would look at the Galaxy S7’s 3,000mAh battery and think that because it has a smaller number, it also has decreased battery life as compared to its larger-batteried, water-resistant predecessor. If Murtazin’s right, those who prize numbers and think that bigger numbers equal better phones will find Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy to be earth-shattering.

This is all Murtazin tells us, but this is enough for battery-hungry consumers to make their decision. With all this beastly battery life ahead for the Galaxy S7 (3,000mAh) and the Galaxy S7 edge (3,600mAh), the return of the microSD slot, and not to mention best-in-class cameras and Samsung’s trademark displays, it’s going to be yet another rough year for the Korean giant’s rivals.
