Galaxy M01 Core may simply be a rebadged Galaxy A01 Core

If you remember the Galaxy A01/M01 line which hit a variety of markets over the first half of this year, Samsung is now following up on it with an even lower-end device posing as a pairing – the Galaxy M01 Core, which reports suggest could simply be a rebranded Galaxy A01 Core.

Samsung will most likely end up using separate monikers in different markets. It may depend on which particular brand has more recognition in a specific market. Under the hood, though, the device is actually going to be one and the same.

Galaxy M01 Core may not be a separate device

A newly spotted revision of Google Play API documentation shows the Galaxy M01 Core bearing model number SM-M013F listed as “a01core”. This suggests that both of these handsets are actually the same and that they will only be launched under separate brand names in different markets.

We exclusively confirmed the Galaxy A01 Core specs yesterday. The handset will feature a 5.3-inch 1480×720 resolution LCD display, a 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6739 processor with 1GB RAM and 16GB storage. There’s also going to be a 3,000mAh removable battery.

While the Galaxy A01 originally debuted at around $120, its Core-branded follow-up is expected to drop that asking price by another $40 or so. Meaning it’s targeting a market segment that’s extremely price sensitive and may appreciate the provision of a removable battery, something that has long proven to be very useful in entry-level devices.

Watch the Galaxy Z Flip 5G dancing around in new leaked video

It’s no secret that Samsung is going to launch a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip. It initially made the LTE version available of its first clamshell foldable smartphone. The company will now be looking to capture customers who would prefer having 5G support on the handset as well.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is one of the devices that’s due to be launched at Samsung’s virtual event next month. A newly leaked video has surfaced and it shows us a good minute of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G just dancing around to capture your attention.

This is the Galaxy Z Flip in Mystic Bronze

These are the videos that you’ll find playing on preview units of new devices, you know, the ones that are installed at kiosks in stores for you to check out. It obviously shows nothing out of the ordinary as Samsung isn’t making any substantial design changes to this device.

It’s still the same clamshell foldable smartphone with the same tiny 1.1-inch cover display and 6.7-inch Infinity Flex display. What might be new, though, is the processor. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is expected to get Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865+ processor.

Samsung will be introducing a new color option for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. It’s one that we’ll see for the Galaxy Note 20 as well. This video also shows the new color which we believe is called Mystic Bronze. It looks quite appealing.

Expect the Galaxy Z Flip 5G to be unveiled at Samsung’s virtual Unpacked event. The company has confirmed that the event is going to take place on August 5. The handset may hit shelves in markets where 5G networks are live a few weeks thereafter. Who’s excited?

Galaxy A51 5G is Samsung’s best gaming mid-ranger but there’s one issue

We have discussed previously how Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy A series pushes the envelope on affordable phones. The Galaxy A21s, Galaxy A31, Galaxy A41 and the Galaxy A51 LTE/5G are going to see the most interest from customers. Granted, there are other handsets in this year’s lineup, but these will cater to most customers.

Samsung is offering something for everyone with the 2020 Galaxy A series. These four devices are particularly well-rounded. They offer specs that are comparable, and in some cases, better than their direct competitors. Samsung has also competitively priced these devices to make them more attainable.

Mobile gaming has seen explosive growth in its popularity over the past decade. Now, most people are more interested in whether the device they’re thinking about buying can play their favorite game than perhaps anything else. Mid-range smartphones have to walk a tightrope as they have to balance both the customers’ expectations in this regard while also not burning a hole in their pocket.

Of these four devices, the Galaxy A51 5G is undoubtedly the best for gaming. Samsung has made some meaningful changes to this device that has improved its performance in this area compared to the LTE variant. First and foremost, the Exynos 980 processor is more capable than the Exynos 9611. There’s also faster UFS2.1 storage which helps speed up things as well. The base variant has 6GB of RAM but you can get it with 8GB as well if you’d like things to be a bit more snappy.

There’s no faulting the device’s 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display which is excellent. The intelligent use of the Infinity-O display has enabled Samsung to trim the bezels, which allows for a more immersive gaming experience. The punch hole is much smaller than what we’ve seen on the very first iterations of the Infinity-O display so it’s not an eyesore.

There is one issue, though, that’s a bit of a nuisance. The single bottom-firing speaker is positioned in a way that you’ll unknowingly cover it with your finger when playing a game in landscape mode. Most games worth playing require you to have your phone in landscape mode so this isn’t an issue that you can avoid.

We liked playing games on the device when we were reviewing it, but this is one issue that constantly irked us. It required a conscious effort to not place the finger at that place, which by the way, is where you’d naturally rest your finger when holding the phone like that. The most obvious workaround is to either use headphones. Fortunately, the Galaxy A51 5G does have a 3.5mm headphone jack. But with the headphones plugged in, you’ll also need to adjust how you rest your palm. Better yet, you could go completely wireless and use the Galaxy Buds+.

With that out of the way, there’s little there that’s not to like about the Galaxy A51 5G. You get support for the next-gen network standard so you can take full advantage of 5G networks with a phone that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. As we pointed out in our Galaxy A51 5G review, the device is fully capable of powering the countless hours you’ll spend playing games like PUBG and Call of Duty and that too at their highest graphics settings.

The speaker position just causes an inconvenience that can be easily avoided. Hopefully, Samsung will address this issue in the Galaxy A51 5G’s successor.

July 2020 Android security update reaches Galaxy Fold

The July 2020 Android security update is now being deployed to select Galaxy Fold models, with Samsung initiating the rollout just yesterday. Denoted by build number F900FXXS4BTF2, the new over-the-air download debuted in over a dozen European markets at once, in addition to reaching Kazakhstan and Russia. Much like its designation suggests, this particular release is intended solely for the international, LTE-only variant (SM-F900F) of the Galaxy Fold.

The U.S. model (SM-F900U1) and 5G-ready edition (SM-F907B) of the device are expected to follow suit in a matter of days. Samsung already distributed the same patch version to the majority of its contemporary flagships, as well as some unique-but-decisively-non-premium smartphones like the Galaxy Z Flip. Save for the new security patch level dated July 1st, this week’s release targeting the original Galaxy Fold contains no other additions or changes.

Patching things up ahead of the big event

If your Galaxy Phone hasn’t already prompted you to install the new update, try triggering the download manually by going to Settings » Software update » Download and install. Alternatively, pay SamMobile’s firmware archive a visit and get your hands on full system images that you can flash to an eligible Galaxy Fold.

This is likely the final Android security update to hit the Galaxy Fold before Samsung officially announces the successor to its first foldable smartphone. Namely, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launch is rumored to be happening early next month at an online-only product event. What’s more, the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Tab S7 lineups are both expected to be unveiled as part of the same happening.

Samsung close to foldable display breakthrough thanks to color filter bet

Foldable smartphones are essentially guaranteed to get a lot better in the near future due to an industry-wide pursuit of color filters, industry watchers at UBI Research claim. Samsung is one of the companies at the forefront of the initiative which aims to replace conventional polarizers with a less limiting solution to reducing panel reflections. Polarizers have been an inseparable component of OLED modules since the said display tech first debuted in the TV segment back in 2007. Without them, any given OLED panel would basically just be an overpriced mirror.

While polarizers hardly burdened OLEDs in the past, the emergence of foldable electronics made their drawbacks way more apparent. Most notably in regards to how they limit the actual flexibility of bendable screens, in addition to heavily impacting their maximum brightness.

Who wouldn’t want it to be thinner, brighter, and more flexible?

Color filters, on the other hand, promise to deliver identical or better anti-reflective properties while simultaneously being thinner than traditional polarizers by a double-digit factor, UBI Research explained in its latest industry report published earlier today. What’s less clear is how would the transition from polarizers to color filters impact foldable display durability. It’s not like existing foldables such as the Galaxy Fold proved to be super resilient anyway. In fact, Samsung actually added an extra shock-absorption layer between the Ultra Thin Glass and polarizer used for the Galaxy Z Flip.

Chinese display manufacturer BOE is also heavily invested in color filter R&D, as per the same report from the Far East. What’s more, BOE may actually be slightly ahead of Samsung in this pursuit, at least based on the already showcased technologies. Interestingly enough, Samsung actually explored the possibility of a large-scale partnership with BOE, albeit one focused on its conventional candybar flagships instead of foldables.

[Poll] How many chargers do you have lying around for our no-charger-in-box future?

A report this week suggested that Samsung could stop shipping chargers in the box with new devices. The move would enable Samsung to further improve its margins on handsets, particularly mid-range devices that have razor-thin margins as it is.

As you’d probably imagine, this possibility hasn’t excited a lot of people. We’re used to getting a charger with our new devices, no matter if it costs $100 or $1,000. The assumption being made is that most customers already have multiple devices so they’re not exactly short on chargers.

That does make sense to an extent. I use the one charger I have on my nightstand to charge my phone and do have more than a couple in spare that are still in the boxes of devices I’ve used over the years. Then again, most people don’t review phones for a living and don’t have multiple devices on hand.

You could use the USB Type-C charger you got with your Galaxy Tab S6 to charge your Galaxy S20 Ultra, though, and that’s the expectation that Samsung seems to have. Or the expectation that customers should now get used to the BYOC (bring your own charger) future and invest in one that they’re going to use even if they sell their previous devices.

If that future ends up being imposed on you, how many chargers do you have lying around that would eliminate the need for you to buy a separate one? Vote below and share your thoughts about this with us in the comments section.

Galaxy Note 9 getting July security patch in latest update

Samsung has now released the July security patch for the soon-to-be-two-years-old Galaxy Note 9. Like many times in the past, it’s German users who are getting the latest update first, with firmware version N960FXXS6ETG1 rolling out to their phones. Only the July security patch is included in the update – no other new features, changes, or improvements are part of the package.

The July security patch, detailed by Samsung earlier this week, fixes four critical Android OS vulnerabilities and 14 vulnerabilities that affect only Galaxy devices. Perhaps the most important fix in this month’s security patch is for the bug that was making Galaxy (and other Android devices) crash when a certain kind of wallpaper was applied. Some other vulnerabilities that have been fixed include a memory leak that could expose important data and an exploit that allowed unauthorized write access to the SD card.

The latest Galaxy Note 9 updated can be downloaded over the air using the Download and install option in the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. It’s only available in Germany for now but should soon be making its way to other countries. You can keep an eye out on our firmware archive to see if the update has been released in your country; you can also use the archive to download the latest firmware for manually upgrading your device.

Galaxy Z Flip 5G support pages go up ahead of possible August 5 launch

Samsung’s all set to hold a virtual Unpacked event on August 5 to unveil its new flagships for the second half of 2020. The Galaxy Note 20 series is more or less confirmed to be the main star of the show, and it’s expected to be accompanied by the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+. Samsung tends to start putting support pages for upcoming devices on its website a few weeks ahead of their announcement, and it has now done so for the least exciting product of the lot.

A support page for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G — model number SM-F707B — has gone live on the Samsung Hungary website and it lists three variants of the device. These are likely to be for the three colors Samsung will sell in Hungary, though there should be a total of four color options for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. As we had exclusively revealed, one of them is going to be a new copper finish that matches the copper version of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Buds Live, and the other three options will be purple, grey/silver, and black.

In addition to new colors, the Z Flip 5G will bring an important upgrade over its LTE cousin. Samsung has replaced the Z Flip’s Snapdragon 855 with the Snapdragon 865 processor for the 5G model, which should help make up for the possibly smaller battery inside the Z Flip 5G and also enable faster performance. Nothing else about the Z Flip is expected to change for the 5G variant, and that includes the beautiful design.

Live images of Galaxy Tab S7+ leak for the first time

Samsung’s next-generation flagship tablets, the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+, are expected to be unveiled next month alongside the Galaxy Note 20. We exclusively leaked their specifications yesterday, and the Galaxy Tab S7’s press render was leaked earlier today. Now, the live images of the Galaxy Tab S7+ have appeared on the internet.

Thanks to the certification authority Safety Korea’s website, we are getting a first look at the Galaxy Tab S7+’s (SM-T976N) rear design. The tablet appears to have a metal body and a dual-camera setup at the rear along with an LED flash. There also seems to be a dedicated area/cavity at the rear to store the bundled S Pen. There’s also an AKG branding at the rear, most probably for its quad-speaker setup.

At the front, there seems to be a front-facing camera and not much else. This corroborates the image of the Galaxy Tab S7 that was leaked earlier today. Supporting documents also reveal another model number of the tablet: SM-T975N. The Galaxy Tab S7 series will come equipped with the Snapdragon 865+ processor that Qualcomm announced yesterday.

Upcoming Samsung wearable device appears in FCC filings

Samsung is expected to launch multiple smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices over the next few weeks. The designs and features of the Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3 have already been leaked. Now, another upcoming wearable device from Samsung has appeared in the FCC database.

The diagram of the wearable has been revealed in the FCC filings, and it bears the model number SM-R220. The device seems to have a heart-rate monitor and charging connectors on the rear, which leads us to believe that it’s a fitness-focused wearable. It could most probably be a successor to the Galaxy Fit or the Galaxy Fit e, which were launched in mid-2019.

While the FCC filing doesn’t guarantee that the device will be announced anytime soon, but it is close to the launch of the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Note 20. So, it is possible that Samsung might announce it during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event that’s set to happen on August 5.

Our sources tell us that the device will be available in Black and Red. There’s not much else that we know about the wearable right now. The South Korean tech giant is also expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Tab S7, and the Galaxy Tab S7+ during its next event.
