Samsung releases Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+ in Korea

We reported two weeks ago that Samsung has started rolling out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 in South Korea. Today the company has announced the release of this firmware update for the Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+. It has put up a post on its local blog to detail some of the changes that are included in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for both of these handsets.

The apps edge feature on the Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+ has been considerably improved in Marshmallow as the pixel size of the panel has been increased from 260 pixels to 550 pixels. This will enable users to enjoy richer content with the expanded panel also providing the ability to incorporate images and easier readability. Tasks edge lets users shoot quick messages, call contacts with just one tap and configure tools like compass or flashlight for easy access. Samsung is rolling out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+ in South Korea today. It has yet to confirm when this update is going to be released for last year’s flagships in other countries across the globe. It’s not like people aren’t waiting for this update to arrive.

Samsung starts mass production of display panels for the Galaxy S7 edge

According to a new report, Samsung Display has started production of AMOLED display panels for the company’s upcoming flagship smartphones that are due to be unveiled on February 21. Samsung is reportedly looking to secure facilities that can provide a monthly production capacity of 9 million panels for the Galaxy S7 edge to ensure smooth supply. Samsung Display is said to have begun the operation of A2 and Tangjeong A3 flexible OLED lines at the Asan facility in the South Chungcheong province to produce panels for the Galaxy S7 edge.

The A2 5.5-generation line is said to produce about 24,000 pieces of mother glass per month while the A3 6-generation line can manage 15,000 pieces per month. One piece of 6-generation mother glass can yield 300 5-inch display panels for smartphones and one piece of the 5.5-generation can yield 220 panels. The figures can change due to process yield rates however industry watchers believe that both production lines combined can produce up to 9 million flexible OLED panels per month when they are at maximum yield rates.

It appears that this time around Samsung is making sure that the Galaxy S7 edge doesn’t suffer from supply constraints. The company was taken by surprise last year when the slightly more expensive Galaxy S6 edge was actually preferred by customers and that led to the handset being in short supply for several months. Looks like Samsung has learned from the experience.

Samsung Pay global expansion plans to be revealed at MWC 2016

Samsung Pay has done well so far in the launch markets – South Korea and the United States – and now the company has set its sights on the world. It has already confirmed that Samsung Pay will soon go live in China and it was only a few months ago that we exclusively revealed that Samsung Pay will go live in the United Kingdom and Spain in Q1 2016. A report out of Korea claims that Samsung is going to reveal global expansion plans for Samsung Pay at MWC 2016.

Sources cited in the report state that Samsung is going to unveil these plans at its event on February 21. That’s not the only announcement worth looking forward to because at that event the company is also going to unveil the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. It’s unclear right now which markets the company might target first in the global expansion other than the ones we already know about.
