Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3’s IP rating could be better than expected

A few weeks ago, we had exclusively revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 would come with an official IP rating. However, we did not have the information about their exact IP rating, and many were expecting that Samsung would make its next foldable phones splash resistant.

Max Weinbach has now revealed that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 feature an IPX8 rating. If this information is true, Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphones could stay protected even when they are submerged into water (up to 1.5m for up to 30 minutes). That’s similar to the IP rating of Samsung’s conventional flagship smartphones, such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

The foldable smartphones won’t be resistant to dust, though, which is understandable, given the moving parts in the hinge. Samsung had developed a brush-like mechanism that removes dust particles from the hinge of its foldable smartphones, and the company may have improved it on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, it looks like that’s not enough to get a dust-proof ingress protection rating.

It appears that Samsung has really improved the designs of its next set of foldable smartphones by making them thinner, more compact, and more durable. Apart from featuring an IP rating, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 also feature more durable UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) screen protection and a lower gap between their two sides when they are folded.

Here’s another look at the Galaxy Buds 2 before their unveiling

Samsung took its sweet time to make it official when it’s going to hold its next Unpacked event, where it will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4 (and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic), and the Galaxy Buds 2. However, not a single important detail about these upcoming products has been left a secret thanks to a mountain of leaks and rumors over the past couple of months.

And before Samsung takes the stage next month, more are apparently to come. Leakster Evleaks has once again published highly detailed renders of the Galaxy Buds 2, giving us yet another look at their design from every angle and their charging case.

Galaxy Buds 2 Galaxy Buds 2 Galaxy Buds 2 Galaxy Buds 2

The renders show the Galaxy Buds 2 and the charging case in black, white, green, and purple – the case is colored the same as the earbuds on the inside this time around, which is a nice touch. A yellow version of the Galaxy Buds 2 will likely be available as well, as renders of the earbuds in that shade were discovered inside the Samsung app that lets you connect the company’s wearables to your phone.

There’s not much else to see here, because, again, everything has leaked before and there’s little to no surprises left for the August 11th Unpacked event. We’ll be covering the event all the same to bring you all the official information and details, so don’t forget to keep checking back.

Are you looking forward to the Galaxy Buds 2, or is there another product you’re more excited for?

Samsung debuts multi-device trade-in program for 3rd gen Galaxy Z devices

Samsung opened up reservations for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 yesterday when it confirmed that Galaxy Unpacked is scheduled for August 11. Prospective buyers can now reserve the upcoming foldables, and those who plan on trading in an existing device for a lower price can specify this detail ahead of time. But more importantly, Samsung is giving people the option to exchange up to two devices for an even bigger discount on one of the upcoming foldable phones.

Samsung’s trade-in program usually allows customers to exchange one device and receive a discount on a new product. However, the newly-launched reservation page allows customers to specify two trade-in devices instead of one — at least in the USA.

Trying to put foldable devices in the hands of more customers

Foldable phones had and continue to have a high barrier to entry, but Samsung is working on bringing costs down and making these types of devices easier to obtain through other means. The updated trade-in program itself reflects this. Besides, the upcoming foldables are rumored to hit the shelves at a lower price than their predecessors, but we’ll have to wait and see how true that is.

Now, it’s unclear if this two-device trade-in scheme will be available only throughout the reservation period or if it will be a part of the Galaxy Z purchasing experience moving forward. Perhaps it could even be extended to other, non-foldable devices, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Samsung is obviously trying to push foldables even more in the spotlight, but we’ll have to wait and see how successful the company’s new trade-in strategy proves to be. Would you trade in two devices for a more significant price drop on a new Galaxy Z Fold / Z Flip?

Samsung’s self-driving lidar clears first milestone, launching in 2026

Samsung Electronics has reached the first milestone in the development of its first-ever lidar for autonomous driving applications. The technology, whose existence was entirely unknown until today, is said to be on course for a commercial launch in 2026. That’s according to a new report out of South Korea.

Sources close to the Seoul-based tech giant claim the solution in question will have a minimal physical footprint relative to existing market alternatives. What that means, exactly, is unclear; lidars, themselves, have been shrinking in size ever since breaking into the mainstream about a decade prior. Today, some of their implementations are small enough to fit inside a tablet. Literally, at that, seeing how the last two iPad generations are equipped with fundamentally the same tech, for example.

No, this doesn’t mean Samsung is developing its own autonomous vehicle

Short for “light detection and ranging”, a modern lidar is essentially a high-performance laser imagery machine that creates topographic models of the emitter’s immediate environment. In a sense, it allows a computer, one connected to a vehicle, for example, to “see” its surroundings.

A modern lidar schema consists of three main components: a pulse laser, detector, and a system-on-chip controlling the two. The SoC is the part whose development Samsung reportedly completed by now.  More specifically, it was Samsung System LSI that achieved this feat. The Korean juggernaut is understood to be aiming for an effective range of some 100 meters. This would be more than sufficient to make the lidar in question usable for modern self-driving applications.

With all that said, don’t take any of this to mean Samsung is developing its own self-driving vehicle. If anything, this report just reinforces the outlook that Samsung keeps strengthening its position of a component supplier for traditional automakers.

Foldables vs wearables: Are you excited about the next Galaxy Unpacked?

In case you missed this morning’s news, the next Galaxy Unpacked is now officially confirmed to be taking place on Wednesday, August 11th. As these things usually go, Samsung’s upcoming product event will serve as a culmination of several months’ worth of exciting rumors and speculation about what’s next in store for the Galaxy family.

The star of the show will undoubtedly be the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung’s third-generation foldable flagship and the first that will attempt to be an out-and-out replacement for the Galaxy Note line. Even Bixby started teasing as much this week, even though not all of us are amused, to say the least. Be that as it may, Samsung will definitely try to position the S Pen as one of the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s killer features, for better or worse.

Are you more excited about the foldables or wearables? Both? Neither?

Moving on, there’s the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to look forward to, as well. Not just because it’s the next rendition of what might still be the best foldable form factor Samsung came up with so far. But also due to the fact it’s going to be the most affordable such gadget from the company to date. By quite some margin, at that, according to our info.

And if you’re more interested in the wearable aspect of the show, the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Watch 4 (and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic) should give you plenty to admire. Both high-end, cutting-edge gadgets in their own respective arenas, both coming to your local Samsung outlet by the end of the next month. Stay tuned for the exact date, however, as not even Samsung seems to be sure about that one as of yet.

But anyway, what are you most excited to see from next month’s Galaxy Unpacked? Feel free to elaborate in the comments, and fingers crossed we’ll have plenty of positives to discuss three weeks from now. Naturally, that is all assuming you managed to get over the fact we aren’t getting a new Galaxy Note generation this year. Not all of us managed to do so, according to our poll from earlier this week.

What are you most excited to see at the August 2021 Galaxy Unpacked?

Samsung’s putting silly new video recording resolutions on budget phones

Samsung has been the leader in the camera department for years, especially in the Android space. It was among the first brands to introduce smartphones with QHD, 4K, and 8K video recording. However, the company has now introduced a weird video recording resolution in one of its smartphones.

The Galaxy A22 5G, which was unveiled a couple of months ago, features a 2K 30fps video recording mode. Usually, 2K refers to 2,048 × 1,080 pixels, but 2K on the Galaxy A22 5G refers to QWXGA (2,048 x 1,152 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 16:9. That’s a bit bigger than Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) but it is still not as good as QHD (2,560 x 1,440 pixels). Samsung isn’t even offering a Full HD 60fps mode on the smartphone.

As far as we’ve seen, the Galaxy A22 5G is the only Samsung smartphone that offers this video recording resolution. In comparison, the Galaxy A22 (non-5G), which has the MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, goes only as high as Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) 30fps. QWXGA is roughly 13% more pixels than Full HD, but it remains to be seen how many people end up using this resolution, considering that it is not the default resolution.

Would you choose this non-standard and uncommon resolution while recording videos?

Galaxy A51 picks up the July 2021 security update

The Galaxy A51 is now in the process of picking up the July 2021 security update. The new release, identified by PDA version A515FXXU5EUG2, has just been spotted in Russia several hours back. Based on Samsung’s version naming practices, it would appear this particular download might carry some additional features or user-facing improvements on top of the actual security patch level upgrade. What those are, exactly, we still cannot say.

Looking at the wider picture, this firmware upgrade has landed weeks after Samsung first started deploying the July 1st, 2021 security patch level. So far, the company’s rollout encompassed 41 devices, or nearly a hundred of them if you count every minor hardware variant in between.

Any chance the update is already live on your end?

Either way, the doors are open for the July 2021 security update to land on your Galaxy A51 in the very near future. The device was still in the process of receiving last month’s update as late as last week, which is when the June patch started reaching compatible units in Canada.

As these things usually go, you can attempt speeding things up a bit by going to Settings Software update Download and install. Doing so might trigger the download manually, assuming the rollout already started in your area. That is to say, this technique most likely won’t work outside of Russia until later this month. Alternatively, our firmware archives stand ready at your disposal. So long as you’re willing and able to quite literally take the matters into your own hands and flash the full system images containing the new security update to your device.

Galaxy A22 5G is coming to India later this week

Three weeks after launching the Galaxy A22 in India, Samsung has announced that it is also bringing the Galaxy A22 5G to the country. Earlier today, the South Korean firm confirmed that the Galaxy A22 5G will be launched in India on July 23, 2021. It will be Samsung’s cheapest Galaxy A series 5G smartphone in the country.

Samsung has also claimed that its upcoming smartphone will have 11 5G bands. In comparison, most other Android smartphone OEMs are only offering two 5G bands in the country. The possible launch of the Galaxy A22 5G in the Indian market was first confirmed by a report last week. Four days ago, another report claimed that the smartphone will carry a starting price tag of INR 19,999 (around $270).

The Galaxy A22 5G sports a 6.6-inch TFT LCD display with Full HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone runs Android 11 out of the box and comes equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor, 4GB/6GB/8GB RAM, 64GB/128GB storage, and a microSD card slot. It is powered by a 5,000mAh battery that supports up to 15W fast charging.

The South Korean firm has equipped the Galaxy A22 5G with an 8MP selfie camera (with 1080p video recording) at the front and a 48MP+5MP+2MP triple-camera setup at the rear. The 48MP sensor has an F1.8 aperture and a weird resolution for video recording: QWXGA 2K (2,048 x 1,152 pixels) at 30fps. The 5MP ultrawide camera has a fixed-focus length and the 2MP camera is used as a depth sensor.

The Galaxy A22 5G has a dual-SIM card slot, 5G, 4G LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB 2.0 Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone was originally announced last month.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 could run cooler than the Galaxy S21 Ultra

Samsung is expected to unveil two new foldable smartphones—Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3—on August 11. The design, specifications, and even price ranges of both upcoming smartphones have been leaked already. Now, it is being reported that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will offer the best performance on any Galaxy smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come equipped with the Snapdragon 888 processor, at least 12GB RAM, and 256GB internal storage, and according to tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce), its heat management is better than the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This results in better gaming performance and longer battery life. If it is true, it is great news for heavy users and mobile gamers. However, you should take this information with a pinch of salt, not that we expect the foldable phone to be a below-par performer by any means. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also said to feature a stronger body despite it featuring movable parts since it is a foldable device.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 specs

The South Korean firm has improved the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in a lot of ways to attract more buyers. We had exclusively reported a few weeks ago that the foldable phone will come with an official IP rating. It is thinner than its predecessor and has a lower air gap between its two sides when it is folded. It will also reportedly feature stronger and more resilient UTG 2.0 (Ultra Thin Glass 2.0) protection over the foldable display. We had also revealed that the phone will be cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have a 10MP selfie camera under the 6.23-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O cover display. It will also be Samsung’s first smartphone to feature an under-display selfie camera (16MP) under the 7.55-inch Super AMOLED foldable screen. It has a 12MP+12MP+12MP triple-camera setup at the rear. The wide-angle and telephoto cameras have OIS, and the ultrawide camera features autofocus.

It runs Android 11 out of the box and is compatible with the S Pen. The phone is also expected to feature 5G, Nano-SIM + eSIM combo, GPS, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, UWB, and a USB Type-C port. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a side-mounted fingerprint reader and stereo speakers. It is powered by a 4,400mAh battery and it is compatible with 25W fast charging.

Here’s how to watch the August 2021 Galaxy Unpacked live

Well, it’s official: the next Galaxy Unpacked is taking place on August 11th. Samsung just confirmed as much several hours back. And as things stand right now, it’s going to be the biggest one of the year. Based on a couple of factors at least, starting with the number of the actual devices Samsung is poised to unveil at the event. That figure currently stands at four, two foldable smartphones in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3, as well as a couple of wearables – the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Watch 4, respectively.

August 11th falls on Wednesday, with the upcoming event being scheduled to start at 10:00 AM EDT. That translates to 4:00 PM CET, 7:30 PM IST, and 11:00 PM KST.

How to tune in to the August 2021 edition of Galaxy Unpacked

As per usual, Samsung will be live-streaming this ostensibly online-only event. In order to tune in to the proceedings, you will have two main options to choose from: watching the action on YouTube or following the event directly from Samsung.com.

It’s still a bit early for any actual streams to be in their scheduled place, but that’s why you can simply bookmark this page and return to it closer to event time – we’ll have you covered with all of the links you might need to join us in following the next Galaxy Unpacked live. Excited? We certainly are. But will things be the same without a new Galaxy Note generation? That remains to be seen.

Galaxy M21 2021 Edition goes official in India as an Amazon exclusive

Samsung had started teasing a newer version of the Galaxy M21 last week. Today, the company has finally launched the Galaxy M21 2021 Edition, which brings a newer design and an updated camera sensor. The smartphone will be available in India in two colors, exclusively through Amazon. It is priced at INR 12,499 (around $170) for the 64GB version and it can be purchased starting July 26, 2021.

The Galaxy M21 2021 Edition (SM-M215G) is largely similar to the original Galaxy M21. It features the same 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with Full HD+ resolution, Gorilla Glass 3 front protection, and a plastic body. However, its rear design is different compared to the Galaxy M21. It has diagonal lines and it comes in two colors: Arctic Blue and Charcoal Black. It has a fingerprint reader at the rear.

It has a 20MP selfie camera and a 48MP triple-camera setup at the rear. The 48MP camera sensor has been upgraded to the ISOCELL Bright GM2, which can capture true 48MP images. The phone also has an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP depth sensor. The Galaxy M21 2021 Edition can record 4K 30fps videos.

It is equipped with the 10nm Exynos 9611 processor, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. Its connectivity features include GPS, a dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is powered by a 6,000mAh battery and supports up to 15W fast charging.

Samsung hasn’t specified which version of Android runs on the Galaxy M21 2021 Edition out of the box. If it comes with Android 11, it will receive two major Android updates in the future, which means that it will get the Android 13 update, while the Galaxy M21 won’t. We will update this story when we get more information on this matter.

Samsung flagships will soon get a very critical camera feature

The Galaxy S21 Ultra, which was launched earlier this year, is widely considered to be the best smartphone camera of 2021, thanks to its consistent image quality and excellent zoom cameras. Now, Samsung has revealed that it will bring a new feature that will make telephoto cameras on Galaxy smartphones even more useful.

The South Korean firm is considering allowing the telephoto cameras on Galaxy smartphones to be used in the Pro mode. This information was revealed on the company’s official forum by a Samsung employee who is in charge of the camera development. It was also mentioned that the company is trying to bring the feature as soon as possible.

Opening up the telephoto cameras to be used in the Pro mode will make them extremely useful, especially to those who like to tinker with camera settings to capture the best possible images. The Pro mode allows users to alter the camera’s ISO, exposure, shutter speed, focus, white balance, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, and tint.

Earlier, Samsung used to allow only the primary camera sensor to be used in the Pro mode. Earlier this year, with the launch of the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung opened up the ultrawide camera in the Pro and Pro Video modes. Then, the company released the same feature to older Galaxy flagship devices.

This feature could be released to the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy 20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy A72, Galaxy Fold, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
