Samsung could release a 4-inch Galaxy S9 Mini

Samsung is preparing to release a compact variant of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, according to investment information provider Valuewalk. The handset—believed to be called the Galaxy S9 Mini—is expected to feature a 4-inch Infinity Display.

From what we can tell, however, Valuewalk’s prediction is based solely on a forecast made by esteemed Weibo tipster Ice Universe last week, who claimed that the firm was working on a sub-5-inch full-screen compact smartphone.

For that reason, we’d recommend taking this information with a hefty grain of salt. There were rumors suggesting that the firm would release a Mini version of both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8, but nothing ever materialized.

That’s not to say it isn’t possible, though.

Related: Galaxy S9 could enter mass production as soon as next month

It’s no secret that Samsung is hoping to rival Apple’s iPhone X with the Galaxy S9—and releasing a smaller variant that sports near-identical specifications would be a fantastic way to target customers who want flagship internals in a smaller package.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are rumored to sport a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Infinity Display, respectively, an Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 processor and a pressure-sensitive Home button. They should also ship running a build of Android 8.0 Oreo.

What do you think?

For now, we’re going to reserve judgment—but we’d love to know what you think. Do you think we’re looking at the Galaxy S9 Mini? Or maybe even something else, like the Galaxy A3 (2018)? Be sure to drop a comment in the section below.

Samsung Odyssey headset will be released in South Korea on November 21

Samsung’s first Windows Mixed Reality headset was launched last month. The Samsung Odyssey headset requires a compatible Windows 10-powered PC to function. The company started taking pre-orders for the headset in the US last month and released it a few days back.

The company has now confirmed when the headset is going to be released in its home country of South Korea. Customers in the country will be able to pick up a Samsung Odyssey headset starting November 21.

Customers in South Korea will be able to try the Samsung Odyssey headset and purchase it from 40 major shopping venues. The headset will also be available from Samsung Digital Plazas which is the company’s own local retail brand.

The headset features dual 3.5-inch AMOLED panels and offers a combined resolution of 2880×1600. That gives the Odyssey a major advantage over its competitors as they only offer 1440×1440 resolution.

It supports inside-out position tracking with a Six Degrees of Freedom sensor. Odyssey users will not be restricted to a limited space during their VR experience. It supports up to 110-degree field of view and up to 90Hz refresh rate. AKG headphones are integrated into the headset with 360-degree Spatial Sound.

Samsung is selling the Odyssey headset for 790,000 won or $700 in South Korea.

Galaxy S6 November update rolling out now

Samsung detailed the November 2017 security patch last week and has since been rolling it out. The patch has been released for the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 (2017). It has also landed on the Galaxy J1 (2016). It’s now being rolled out for the Galaxy S6.

Since it’s a minor security update that only brings security fixes, Galaxy S6 users shouldn’t expect much in the way of new features or tweaks. The November update does fix a crucial Wi-Fi vulnerability, though.

Galaxy S6 November update

The November 2017 security patch fixes the Krack Wi-Fi vulnerability. It’s a security flaw in the WPA Wi-Fi security protocol so any device that supports Wi-Fi is likely affected by it.

Attackers can use the vulnerability to eavesdrop on traffic between access points and connected devices. There haven’t been any reports of widespread exploitation of this vulnerability so at least people can find some solace in that.

Firmware version G920FXXU5EQK4 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S6 SM-G920F. It’s out now for the SFR-branded version of the handset in France. The update file is available for download from our firmware section.

It’s only a matter of time before the Galaxy S6 November update is released in other markets.

Second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta pulled in the US

Samsung released the second Android 8.0 Oreo beta firmware for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the US less than 24 hours back, but it looks like the update carried a major bug. Beta participants have taken to Reddit to reveal that their Galaxy S8 isn’t getting a network signal on the second Oreo beta, and Samsung has officially halted the update so it can work on a fix.

Second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta pulled in the US

This issue affects Sprint, T-Mobile, and unlocked Galaxy S8s, with users complaining about the phone app repeatedly crashing after the update. Some of those users say clearing data for the phone app fixes the issue, but it crops right back after a restart. A factory reset isn’t helping either, and that might be why Samsung isn’t pushing out the update at this time. The company will hopefully find a solution quickly, but right now, there’s no mention of when the update will start rolling out again.

With beta software, such issues are to be expected and the reason why it shouldn’t be used as a daily driver. Thankfully, the network connectivity problem seems to be limited to the US models, so Samsung is still gathering information and working towards Android 8.0 Oreo’s official release. Here’s hoping the fix is a simple one and rolled out as quickly as possible, instead of being reserved for the third beta. We’ll be sure to let you know either way, so stay tuned to SamMobile.

Oh, and for the temporary solution of clearing data for the phone app (which may or may not work for you), here’s what you would need to do:

  1. Go to the phone’s settings, and then tap the Apps option.
  2. Here, tap the three-dot button and select the Show system apps option.
  3. Scroll down and tap on the Phone app.
  4. Here, select Storage, followed by the Clear data button.
  5. Go back to the apps list and repeat step 4 for each instance of the Phone app.
  6. Restart your phone and see if your phone gets cell reception.

Have you faced this issue running the latest Android Oreo beta on your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+?

SamMobile Daily Recap: November 14, 2017 — Galaxy A5 (2018), Galaxy S8 and more!

Galaxy S9 will be unveiled ahead of MWC, says tipster

Samsung could release the Galaxy S9 a little earlier than expected, according to a reliable tipster, who expects it to be unveiled ahead of Mobile World Congress in February, though the same rumor makes the rounds every year—so best take it with a pinch of salt.

That’s not to say it doesn’t seem feasible, though. It was recently reported that the Galaxy S9 could mass production as soon as next month. If that turns out to be the case, there’s a chance it will hit the shelves by the time Mobile World Congress comes around.

The tipster also noted that Samsung has copied some of the iPhone X’s “tricks” for the Galaxy S9. We don’t know exactly what the source is referring to, but we’d bet our bottom dollar it has something to do with a complex face recognition feature that can rival Apple’s Face ID.

February technically won’t be an early launch

If the Galaxy S9 is announced before Mobile World Congress, it technically won’t be an early launch; both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 were unveiled ahead of the conference. It’s only the Galaxy S8 that was unveiled a little later, because Samsung was dealing with the Galaxy Note 7 disaster.

Galaxy A5 (2018) makes an appearance at the FCC

Last week, the upcoming Galaxy A7 (2018) was spotted on the Federal Communication Commission’s online database—and now the much-rumored Galaxy A5 (2018), which was prematurely listed on Samsung’s website on Monday, has made an appearance.

The accompanying documentation doesn’t reveal anything about the handset; however, recent leaks and rumors point towards it shipping with an Infinity Display (18.5:9) an Exynos 7785 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 3,300mAh battery.

There’s no information pertaining to when the Galaxy A5 (2018) will hit the shelves, but seeing as it’s already appeared on Samsung’s website and passed through the Federal Communication Commission, we think it’s safe to say its launch is imminent.

What about the Galaxy A7 (2018)?

The firm is also tipped to release the Galaxy A7 (2018) alongside the Galaxy A5 (2018). The handset is rumored to feature similar internals to its brethren, though it should benefit from a slightly larger Infinity Display and a beefier battery.

Samsung’s SM-W2018 flagship seen in leaked images once again

Samsung is yet to announce its new flagship flip phone even though we’ve already seen plenty of live images of this device. Several images were leaked online just last week and new live images have surfaced online once again. It’s about time that Samsung officially unveiled this handset.

The company is yet to confirm when it’s planning on unveiling the SM-W2018. That’s what its new flagship flip phone is likely going to be called. As we’ve previously mentioned, you might want to buy one after seeing these images.

Samsung’s flagship flip phone

The SM-W2018 is reportedly going to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor with 6GB of RAM. It may also feature 64GB of storage and a 2,300mAh battery. The cameras will include a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front shooter.

The flip phone is going to have two displays, two 4.2-inch Full HD panels to be precise. You don’t normally see a lot of flagship flip phones on the market with dual displays so this is in a league of its own.

Samsung is likely going to launch the SM-W2018 in China only. However, it might see a decent response from customers if it was launched elsewhere as well. It’s claimed that this flagship device will cost over $2,000 when it’s released in China.
