Galaxy S6 lineup to no longer receive security updates

It’s been three years since the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge went on sale as Samsung’s first flagships with its modern glass-heavy design language, and the phones have had a good run as far as software updates are concerned, just like it usually is the case with the company’s top-of-the-line phones. But software support has to come to an end at some point, and that point seems to have arrived for the entire Galaxy S6 lineup. Samsung has removed mention of the S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and the S6 Active from the page where it details security updates, suggesting no further updates will be released for these handsets.

End of the line for the Galaxy S6 lineup

Samsung’s been embroiled in a lawsuit that says the company should support its phones for at least four years after launch, but it isn’t exactly open to changing its policies despite the pressure. Samsung promises two years of major OS upgrades and three years of security updates, and that period has now elapsed for the S6 and S6 edge. However, what’s odd is that the S6 edge+ seems to be off the list as well while the Note 5 isn’t, despite the two phones launching at the same time. The same goes for the Galaxy S6 Active, which released in June so is technically two months away from the end of its three-year support period.

But, as Samsung has iterated time and time again, this doesn’t mean software updates for the Galaxy S6 lineup won’t come out when the need arises, as many older devices receive updates every now and then. But it does mean that if you own one of the Galaxy S6 devices, you can stop checking for new updates as often as you might be right now. And hey, this might just be the push you need to upgrade to a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+, which will be receiving security updates till 2021 and have a laundry list of new features for anyone moving from a two-year or older Samsung flagship.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ get price cuts in India

India is a price sensitive market, and while the budget segment is where things have gone south for the Korean giant’s presence in the country, Samsung has been offering excellent value with its flagship offerings in recent years, pricing them very competitively against other Android phone makers. The Galaxy S9 and S9+, for example, were launched with the same price tags in India as the Galaxy S8 and S8+ had been a year prior, despite the lineup seeing at least a $50 price hike in other markets. Last year, Samsung had reduced the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ prices in India by a sizable amount, and with the Galaxy S9 and S9+ now on sale in the country, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have received yet another price cut.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ get price cuts in India

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are now available in India for Rs. 49,990 and Rs. 53,900, which is around Rs. 10,000 less than what the Galaxy S9 and S9+ cost. The new prices have gone into effect on both Samsung’s official website and at offline retailers, with the latter also offering a Rs. 10,000 cashback for those who pay via the Paytm wallet. The 128GB version (with 6GB of RAM) of the Galaxy S8+, meanwhile, is available for Rs. 64,900. That’s the same as the 64GB Galaxy S9+, and considering the S9+ gets 6GB of RAM and the microSD slot allows for further storage expansion, Samsung’s latest flagship makes a tad more sense thanks to all the extra features on-board.

That’s not to say the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ aren’t excellent smartphones even a year later, and with the new price tags, they now offer even better value for consumers in India who might be shopping for a top-end phone. But, if you haven’t yet made a decision, be sure to check out our Galaxy S9 review to see if you might be better off spending more on Samsung’s 2018 flagship.

Galaxy S8 Active Oreo update reportedly being rolled out by AT&T

Last year, Samsung finally broke the Galaxy S Active lineup’s AT&T exclusivity by launching the Galaxy S8 Active on Sprint and T-Mobile. It was a move many had been waiting for, but while it was great to see the extra-rugged Galaxy S8 was offered to more consumers, it also meant that more people would be waiting for the eventual Android 8.0 Oreo update on the Active model. And, well, the wait has certainly been long even for regular Galaxy S8 owners, but at least AT&T seems to be rolling out the Galaxy S8 Active Oreo update.

AT&T’s support page doesn’t mention anything about Oreo for the S8 Active just yet, but a few users seem to have received the update over the weekend. It doesn’t seem to be an April Fool’s prank, either, though compared to how long previous Active phones have had to wait for such major updates, it’s surprising that Oreo is already out for the Galaxy S8 Active. Again, AT&T hasn’t said anything yet, and it will also be interesting to see how much time Sprint and T-Mobile will take to release the first big software update for their first Galaxy S Active handset. It won’t be too long, hopefully, but you can never tell with North American carriers.

In any case, if you own the AT&T Galaxy S8 Active, you can see if Oreo is available by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Settings » Software update menu on the phone. The update is around 1.2 GB in size, carries build number G892AUCU2BRC5, and includes the March 2018 security patch. Do let us know if the update is indeed available, and if you’re wondering what Android 8.0 Oreo brings to your phone, check out our exhaustive coverage. Samsung also has an official infographic listing out the new features, so do take a look at that as well.
