SamMobile Daily Recap: September 19, 2017 — Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S7 and more!

Galaxy S8 Active’s shatter-resistant screen scratches pretty easily

The Galaxy S8 Active, which went official last month in the US, could be a perfect smartphone for many people. It has not only all the niceties of the Galaxy S8, but also a stronger body, a shatter-resistant screen, and a larger battery. However, the shatter-resistant screen comes with a caveat. It could catch scratches pretty quickly.

A lot of consumers who purchased the Galaxy S8 Active from AT&T and posted their reviews mention that the phone’s 5.8-inch shatter-resistant screen gets scuffs and scratches pretty easily, even when the phone was in their pocket. This is due to a lamination technology (material that’s softer than glass panels used in other phones) that is used to make the screen shatter-resistant. The Galaxy S7 Active also faced similar problems.

Motorola uses a similar technology for the Moto Z2 Force’s ShatterShield display. The company even runs a program that helps consumers in replacing these scratched and scuffed panels with new ones for 30 bucks each. Unless Samsung starts a similar program, Galaxy S8 Active owners might have to live with more scratches than they’re accustomed to from phones with harder glass covers.

Have you seen more scratches and scuffs on your Galaxy S8 Active’s display? Let us know in the comments section below.

Galaxy Note 8 battery life with two active SIM cards is surprisingly good

I wasn’t keen on switching to the Galaxy Note 8. I’ve gone from loving things like the productivity the S Pen enables to enjoying the more basic elements of a smartphone, and battery life has figured highly on my list of important features on a flagship. Samsung, for the most part, has done a good job of keeping up, not counting the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, which had horrendous battery life. The Galaxy S8+ continued the streak, but Samsung decided to reduce the battery capacity on the Note 8 compared to the S8+ in order to make space for the S Pen.

I’m not going to buy the Galaxy Note 8. Instead, I’ll be using the review unit provided to us by Samsung India as long as they let me keep it (unfortunately, here in India, companies don’t let us keep review units, a limitation that extends even to a fan site like SamMobile). As I said at the beginning, I wasn’t keen on switching to the Note 8 as my primary device, and the smaller battery was the main reason I thought I’d keep using the S8+. But I’ve been using the Note 8 for almost a week at this point, and I have to say I’ve been surprised by its battery life, even with two SIMs active.

If you’ve read Galaxy Note 8 reviews on the web (ours has been delayed, but it’s coming), you will have read that it has very stable battery life and manages to offer similar endurance every day. For some reason (most likely extra optimization), the Note lineup has always done more with the same battery capacity compared to a Galaxy S flagship. The Note 8, while not a long-lasting device, has offered folks impressive battery endurance, and even in dual SIM mode, my unit has lasted quite long since the first full charge.

Galaxy Note 8 battery life with two active SIM cards is surprisingly good

The stats I’ve posted here won’t look like much to those who expect their flagship phones to last through to the next day. But, considering the Note 8’s hardware and its battery capacity, they are quite good, especially when I compare them to the S8+ that I’ve been using the last few months. In fact, I’ve never seen more than four hours of screen on time on my S8+ (in dual SIM mode). Not even with continued and prolonged usage on the first couple of days, which usually fetches higher screen on time as less battery is wasted in idle. The stats in the second screenshot (the one below) involved idle time overnight on Wi-Fi and nearly four hours of idle on LTE in a low-network area, so screen time isn’t that high, but it would have been if it hadn’t been for the idle drain while I was asleep.

Galaxy Note 8 battery life with two active SIM cards is surprisingly good

I will admit that my usage doesn’t involve anything other than sharing memes on Facebook (an awful lot, a habit that isn’t doing my eyes any favor), chatting on WhatsApp, browsing now and then on Chrome, and checking Slack and three email accounts for work multiple times over the course of a day. Most of it is done on Wi-Fi, but a few hours are sometimes spent on LTE. But my usage pattern does remain constant across all devices, and the Note 8 has done a better job in my eyes compared to the S8+. I should say I’ve also played with the Note 8 camera much more than I did with the S8+’, trying to get that perfect Live Focus shot and zooming in on things I don’t really need to capture up close.

It’s likely my battery life figures won’t remain the same a few months down the line, but given Samsung’s new batteries don’t lose much of their charge retaining capacity even after a year, they may not worsen dramatically. However, I would like to point out that this also makes me realize that the Korean giant’s primary flagship line isn’t getting the same kind of optimization that we see on Note devices, which, after all these years, is rather disappointing. Perhaps the productivity-focused agenda of Note phones is what makes Samsung put in the extra effort, but whatever the case might be, I’d say that you shouldn’t be holding back from grabbing a Galaxy Note 8 if you’re concerned about the not-so-big battery.

[Poll] DeX users, are you still using Samsung DeX or have you given up?’

Samsung launched its DeX wired docking station earlier this year with the Galaxy S8. The accessory powers an Android-based desktop experience from a compatible device. The Galaxy Note 8 is compatible with Samsung DeX as well.

Did the promise of a desktop experience make you purchase the DeX station? What we’d like to know is whether you’re still using Samsung DeX or have given up on it. At what point did the novelty wear off for you?

We concluded in our Samsung DeX review that it isn’t a PC replacement and that power users will be annoyed. However, the accessory is great for basic usage like editing documents and browsing.

Vote below and do share your thoughts about DeX with us in the comments section.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Galaxy Note 8 sales top 270,000 units on first weekend

Samsung released the Galaxy Note 8 last week in a handful of countries across the globe. The handset was also released in its home country of South Korea. A new report out of the country reveals that Galaxy Note 8 sales crossed 270,000 units on the first weekend.

The initial response to the Galaxy Note 8 had been promising. Samsung was seeing its new flagship handset break pre-order records. That’s just what the doctor ordered after the fiasco that was the Galaxy Note 7.

Industry data from South Korea shows that Galaxy Note 8 sales crossed 270,000 units on the first weekend. The nation’s top three carriers received 200,000 new subscribers for the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15. SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus then received 70,000 additional subscribers the following day.

These 270,000 Galaxy Note 8 sales account for 32 percent of the entire 850,000 pre-order volume that Samsung saw in eight days from September 7. The new flagship’s initial performance is better compared to its predecessors. The Galaxy Note 7 brought in 160,000 new subscribers on its first day. The Galaxy S8 lured in 260,000.

The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to continue this momentum in the coming weeks. Analysts don’t see the iPhone 8 making much of a dent in its sales. However, the situation is likely to change when the iPhone X arrives this November.

Samsung’s reputation takes a hit after heir’s arrest

You might remember that Samsung Electronics’ Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was arrested earlier this year. He was arrested on charges that ranged from corruption to embezzlement. Lee Jae-yong was later indicted, convicted, and sentenced after the trial. The legal troubles of the conglomerate’s heir apparent seem to have had an impact on Samsung Electronics’ reputation.

Lee was found guilty of being involved in a corruption scandal that also led to the impeachment of the country’s president Park Geun-hye earlier this year. He was sentenced to five years in jail, however, his legal team is going to fight the sentence.

The US-based Reputation Institute has released a new report which shows that Samsung’s ranking in terms of corporate social responsibility has dropped by 69 places.

The Reputation Institute assigns these rankings based on the company’s governance structure, social influences and its treatment of workers. Samsung now sits in the 89th spot on the list.

Among the top 100 companies included in this list, Samsung saw the sharpest year-on-year decline in its reputation ranking. Industry watchers are of the view that it might have something to do with the arrest of Lee Jae-yong.

The institute also opines that the complete recall of the Galaxy Note 7 late last year due to faulty batteries may have impacted Samsung’s overall reputation as well.

Samsung’s new video shows how easy it is to transfer content from iPhone to Galaxy Note 8

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus from Apple will be released in a couple of days. They’ll be competing against the Galaxy Note 8. While Apple is busy in hyping up the release, Samsung is highlighting just how easy it is for existing iPhone owners to ditch their phones.

Samsung has posted a new video on its official YouTube channel. The video highlights the ease with which an iPhone user can transfer content from iPhone to Galaxy Note 8. It’s focusing on the Galaxy Note 8 because the new flagship was just released. The same holds true for other Samsung smartphones as well.

Linking the two devices together to transfer content from iPhone to Galaxy Note 8 is simple enough. Use the iPhone cable and adapter included with the Galaxy Note 8 to connect the devices. Launch Samsung’s Smart Switch app when prompted and then follow the onscreen instructions. It’s as simple as that.

The timing on this can’t really be a coincidence. Samsung is trying to capture the attention of iPhone owners who might be thinking about an upgrade. It would much rather see then switch to the Galaxy Note 8 instead of the iPhone 8. Once they see how easy it is to transfer content from iPhone to Galaxy Note 8, they just might.

August security update now making the rounds for the Galaxy S5 Neo

Samsung has started rolling out a maintenance update for the Galaxy S5 Neo in Europe. The upgrade bundles all of the changes baked into last month’s Security Maintenance Release, which includes patches for twenty-eight Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in the Android operating system and twelve in Samsung’s in-house firmware, as well as a number of much-needed bug fixes.

Related: Samsung details the August security patch

Unfortunately, there’s still no word on the long-awaited Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S5 Neo in the continent. It’s already arrived on the factory unlocked variant of the handset in Canada, leading us to believe it’s on the way to Europe. We just don’t know when exactly it will arrive, but we’ve contacted Samsung in an attempt to find out.

To check to see if the upgrade—G903FXXS1BQH1—is available for your Galaxy S5 Neo, open up Settings, select About Device, then tap Download Updates Manually. If you don’t, however, feel like going down that route, you can always wait until you receive an alert instructing you install the OTA, but, as we’ve said in the past, it typically takes a little longer to reach your device.
