Galaxy S7 updated with October security patch in India

India is one of the markets where Samsung is running behind with security updates for flagship phones right now. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ were updated with the October security patch in early November in the country, while mid-range phones like the Galaxy A7 (2017) followed soon after with the November patch. Well, Samsung is now rolling out the October patch to the Galaxy S7, its 2016 flagship, in India.

Galaxy S7 October security patch rolling out in India

The update is only available for the regular Galaxy S7, but the Galaxy S7 edge will probably join the party soon. There’s nothing on this update other than the November security patch from what we know right now. The November patch fixes the KRACK Wi-Fi exploit, 61 Android vulnerabilities (KRACK is a Wi-Fi issue that is not exclusive to Google’s mobile operating system), and six Samsung vulnerabilities. The update is available over the air and bumps the build number up to G930FXXU1DQJB.

The OTA is slightly more than 400 MB in size, so make sure you use a Wi-Fi connection if you don’t want to see your mobile data plan being eaten up. The related firmware is also available in our database. We’ll update this story when the Galaxy S7 edge starts getting the October security patch in India, and, of course, we will also let you know once the November patch makes its way to the S7 and S7 edge in the country.

Do you have the update on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge yet?

Fact or fiction? Galaxy Note 8 has ‘most generous battery capacity’ of any Note series device

Now, before you reach for those pitchforks, let me say that the words in the title aren’t mine or one of my colleagues’ at SamMobile. They come straight from Samsung, or at least from the company’s Samsung Members app, from a section on official performance tips for the Galaxy Note 8. And, frankly, if we consider what happened last year, Samsung isn’t entirely wrong, but it’s not entirely correct, either.

Somewhere between fact and fiction

The Galaxy Note 7 had a 3,500 mAh battery, but that phone was officially cancelled after its tendency to burn up was found to be the norm rather than an exception. The Galaxy Note 8, therefore, does have the largest battery on any Galaxy Note flagship that didn’t meet a premature end. But, I’m not sure it has the most generous battery capacity of any Note device.

That statement would be 100 percent correct if the Note 8’s battery capacity were notably higher than any Note flagship before it, but that’s not true. The Galaxy Note 4 had a 3,220 mAh battery, way before the Note 7 fiasco and just a year before Samsung decided Europeans aren’t productive enough to need a Galaxy Note smartphone. Only 80 mAh lower than the Note 8, if you do the math. While Samsung probably wants to forget what is possibly its worst supported flagship ever, we still remember it all.

Fact or fiction? Galaxy Note 8 has 'most generous battery capacity' of any Note series device

The Note 4’s battery was big for its time, and it was removable, too. Sure, the Note 8 has fast wired and fast wireless charging and will also retain much of its charge holding capacity a year or two down the line. But it’s far from the “most generous” as Samsung puts it, and doesn’t have anything on the fact that Note 4 users could swap their battery for a new one whenever they felt like it (and had support for the same wired fast charging tech back then).

A removable battery wouldn’t have allowed Samsung to give us the beautiful smartphone designs it has in recent years, though, so every aspect has both a pro and con associated with it. Thankfully, while the Note 8 doesn’t have the most generous battery capacity of any Note device, it manages to offer surprisingly impressive endurance (even surpassing the S8+ at times, at least for me).

Along with the S8 and S8+, the Note 8 also has the safest battery on any Samsung smartphone or tablet, or at least one that has gone through a battery of checks (pun unintended) to ensure there’s no repeat of the Note 7 drama. And, well, Samsung doesn’t seem to be using this marketing ploy everywhere, so I guess we can excuse the company for taking a few liberties with its words.

What do you think?

Disclaimer: This article isn’t meant to deride Samsung; this is just something we thought would make for interesting reading for our readers.

Rumor: Galaxy S9 screen-to-body ratio may be as high as 89-90 percent

There’s been a fair bit of talk about the Galaxy S9 in the rumor mill recently, with even a near-final version of the phone supposedly appearing in case renders. The source of those case renders had said that the bezel above the display might be narrower than what is portrayed in the renders, and we have received a tip to support that claim. In fact, our tipster tells us the Galaxy S9’s screen-to-body ratio may be as high as 90 percent, nearly six percent higher than that of the Galaxy S8+.

Galaxy S9 bezels could be a lot smaller than the S8’s

Now, Samsung has made a point of not mentioning an exact number for the screen-to-body ratio on its flagships, but if we look at the available data, the Galaxy S8+’s ratio is around 84 percent (for beginners, screen-to-body ratio is an indication of how much surface the screen takes up compared to the whole device). With the “bezel-less” designs of smartphones today, companies have been on a mission to offer as big a screen as possible on as compact bodies as possible. Naturally, we’re still some ways off from truly all-screen phones, but Samsung may have made some strides with the Galaxy S9 to get closer to that goal.

According to the information we have received, the bottom chin seen on the Galaxy S8 will be next to non-existent on the Galaxy S9, and the top bezel will be narrower than the S8’s bottom bezel. It’s unclear if the bezels on the left and right of the display will be reduced, although Samsung may not have much room to play around in that regard because of how the screen curves at the sides, and how the side bezels are already at a bare minimum on the Galaxy Note 8.

Of course, this is just a rumor that may or may not be based on fact, so take it with the proverbial pinch of salt. It certainly sounds plausible, and with the iPhone X now heating up the competition, Samsung could do with gaining as many brownie points as it can with the Galaxy S9.

Galaxy S8 November security patch update is finally rolling out

Well, it looks like a good day for Galaxy S8 updates. Samsung just released a new Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, and it has also started rolling out the November security update for the millions of regular consumers not taking part in the beta program. In fact, it seems Samsung has used the same official changelog for the beta and standard update, with both mentioning improvements to Bluetooth connectivity and the latest Google security patches.

Galaxy S8 November 2017 security patch update

The November security patch brings a fix for the widespread Wi-Fi KRACK exploit, along with fixes for 61 other Android vulnerabilities and six exploits found only on Samsung’s software. The latest security update, as is usually the case, seems to have gone live in the Netherlands first, but it shouldn’t be long before it spreads to other markets. It’s rolling out over the air right now as a rather big 545 MB download, and carries build number G950FXXU1AQK7.

Your Galaxy S8 or S8+ should notify you once the update is available, but since that can take time, you can grab it right away from the Settings » Software update menu. We will also have the firmware in our database shortly for those who prefer the fully manual route for upgrading. If you have already received the update in a country other than the Netherlands, do let us know in the comments!

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Android 8.0 Oreo beta 3 now rolling out

Samsung is rolling out the third Android 8.0 Oreo beta to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the UK, with the update now available for download over the air. It’s a 600 MB+ update for at least the Galaxy S8, and it looks like the only major improvement here is to Bluetooth stability. The November security patch is also included, but that’s about it according to the update’s changelog.

Galaxy S8 and S8+ Android 8.0 Oreo beta 3 now available

Of course, there may be quite a few other changes, fixes, and even newer features not mentioned in the OTA changelog. Samsung will hopefully be listing a more informative changelog in the Samsung Members app soon, as it usually does for these beta releases (especially since one of the Samsung community members posted earlier this week that the company is working to make the third beta as good as possible). We are downloading the beta right now and will report on any notable stuff we discover ourselves.

If you’re on the Oreo beta program, go ahead and open the phone’s settings, go into the Software update section, and hit the Download updates manually button to grab the latest beta. See anything new or different after the update? Be sure to let us know by leaving a comment and get a discussion going!
