Samsung reveals some details about its upcoming wearable device

Recent reports have suggested that Samsung is working on a new wearable device. It’s not said to be a full-fledged smartwatch so it won’t be the Gear S4. The information that Samsung has revealed suggests that it’s more of a fitness tracker/smartwatch hybrid.

Samsung has revealed some details about the upcoming wearable device. The company has sent out a survey to members of its SmartLab Plus program. One of the members on our team received this email. Samsung is asking for opinions on some taglines that will be used to promote the new product.

“The new product concept takes the best bits from Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2,” Samsung says. The company also explains that the new product is “in the form of a smartwatch (rather than an activity tracker)” and that it provides maximum comfort with a smaller body and thinner watch straps. The watch straps will be replaceable so that customers can personalize the look.

The company mentions in the email that its new product is water resistant to the point where it’s swimproof. This means that users will be able to track their swimming workouts as well. Additional fitness tracking features will include activity tracking, weight and calorie management, active sports and coaching.

The device will have a revised user interface optimized for widgets with glanceable information. It’s going to push smart inactivity alerts to remind users to stay active when on a flight or even when it feels that they need to take a break while driving.

Samsung may be trying to blur the line between fitness trackers and smartwatches with this product. The company says that the device has been designed to be something that customers can “wear all day from work to the gym.”

It’s unclear when Samsung is planning to unveil this device and whether it will be branded under the Gear S or Gear Fit lineup.

Samsung Pay adds support for SBI (State Bank of India) debit cards in India

Samsung Pay is now compatible with debit cards from State Bank of India (SBI), the largest and most widely used bank in India. At launch, Samsung Pay had arrived with support for only credit cards from SBI, in addition to both debit and credit cards from Axis, HDFC, ICICI, and Standard Chartered, and the Paytm wallet service. Recently, the app received full support for India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service, which has been growing in popularity since the government’s move to demonetize the country’s high denomination currency late last year in a bid to move towards a digital economy and stem the flow of black money in the country.

Samsung also launched the Samsung Pay Mini app for its budget phones in India last month; Samsung Pay Mini supports UPI and wallets like Paytm and Mobikwik. Samsung is reportedly looking to bring Samsung Pay to devices from other manufacturers as well, although whether that will happen anytime soon remains to be seen. For now, the addition of support for SBI debit cards should come as good news for many users with a Samsung Pay compatible phone in India. Samsung is also offering Rs. 500 cashback for all transaction done until August 31st, which is an added bonus, although you might have to try adding your card a few times before the process actually goes through.

Original Galaxy J5 getting update with July security patch in Europe

Samsung is currently pushing out an update that brings the July security patch to the original Galaxy J5 in Europe. The 45MB update doesn’t have anything else of importance, other than the usual bug fixes and performance improvements. As for the July security patch, it addresses a total of 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android operating system and 16 weaknesses in Galaxy-branded smartphones and tablets.

The update should be showing up on your phone in the near future, and you can also grab it by manually checking via the Settings » About device » Download updates manually menu. In case you were wondering when that supposed Nougat update will arrive on the Galaxy J5, well, there’s no telling if the update will even arrive, given the J5 is two years old and came in near the bottom rung of Samsung’s budget segment. For now, it’s good to see the company continuing to push out security updates to such old devices, challenging the bad-mouthing it receives for its update policies.

Leaked Galaxy Note 8 press render confirms design

Samsung isn’t due to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 until August 23 but that doesn’t mean the leaks will stop coming in. Several leaked renders and schematics of the Galaxy Note 8 have already tried to give us a sense of the handset’s design. Earlier today, an official-looking press render of the Galaxy Note 8 was leaked online.

We’ve now been treated to yet another press render of the Galaxy Note 8. The handset is shown in Midnight Black and Gold colors. It also confirms the rumors that we’ve heard so far about the handset’s design.

It’s evident that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to have a 6.3-inch Infinity Display with a rather impressive screen-to-body ratio. There’s a physical Bixby button on the right side and the fingerprint sensor has been relocated to the back since it doesn’t have a home button.

As far as the design is concerned, the Galaxy Note 8 basically looks like a stretched Galaxy S8, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The render, leaked by @evleaks, also confirms that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to be Samsung’s first flagship smartphone to feature a dual camera system.

Samsung will confirm more information about the Galaxy Note 8 at its event in New York which takes place on August 23.

New render of the Midnight Black Galaxy Note 8 leaked

evleaks has just published a render of the Midnight Black version of the Galaxy Note 8, giving us yet another look at the upcoming phablet ahead of its official launch. Sadly, this render doesn’t reveal anything new and only confirms that the Galaxy Note 8 will be indistinguishable from the Galaxy S8+ when you look at it from the front.

Thankfully, we can look to previously leaked renders to get an idea of the Note 8’s design, including the new dual rear cameras. In terms of specs, the Note 8 is expected to be mostly similar to the Galaxy S8+, but with a 6.3-inch screen, possibly 6GB of RAM across all markets, a smaller battery (or the same as the S8, nothing is certain yet), and 256GB of storage on a variant exclusive to markets like South Korea. You can see everything we know about the Galaxy Note 8 in this round-up post.

What do you make of the newly leaked Note 8 render?

[Update: Apps now available] Daydream update rolling out to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, says Google

After Verizon and T-Mobile’s recent goofup saying that their updates for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ were introducing Daydream support when they actually weren’t, Google is now officially saying that an update with Daydream support is rolling out to Samsung’s latest flagships. This can be taken as the final word that Daydream support is actually arriving, unless Google is just saying so because of Verizon and T-Mobile’s recent fluke.

Google’s official Daydream website still says Daydream support for the S8 and S8+ is “coming soon”, so it will take some time before the update arrives on your handset (which is a given for any update, Daydream or not). Of course, with Samsung’s Gear VR being the more robust virtual reality option, many of you probably aren’t too interested in Daydream. But it’s always great to have alternatives, especially with Google Daydream costing around $50 less than the latest Gear VR and no doubt a huge focus for developers given the Daydream VR platform is a feature supported by Android in general.

Update: It seems Daydream support for the S8 and S8+ really is here, as all of the Daydream apps are now available for installation from the Play Store. The primary Daydream app also works, although we do not have a Daydream headset in our possession and are unable to check it out.
