Samsung’s VR stunt at the Oscars was cancelled at the last minute

For the past few years Samsung has been a major sponsor of the Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, who can forget the infamous Ellen selfie with A-list celebrities that generated a lot of buzz for the Galaxy Note 3. It was a planned promotional activity for Samsung and it paid dividends as that selfie became the most retweeted tweet on Twitter. Samsung only filled the first ad spot at the Oscars this year with which it pushed the new flagship handsets and its virtual reality technology but it turns out that the company had a bigger virtual reality stunt planned for the Oscars this year which was cancelled at the last minute.

Samsung hired YouTube vlogger Casey Neistat to cover the Oscars as part of a promotional activity for the Galaxy S7 and the company’s new Gear 360 camera. Neistat revealed in his vlog today that Samsung really wanted to push virtual reality in a big way at the Oscars. It was initially planned to have Neistat skateboard down the aisle at the Dolby Theater with Samsung’s new 360-degree camera, he would have shot past Leonardo DiCaprio and jumped onto the stage holding the camera during the live broadcast of the proceedings. It would have been an amazing stunt and would have yielded an amazing virtual reality video. Samsung pushed the Academy and the TV team to go ahead with this stunt as everything had already been rehearsed but it was cancelled hours before the broadcast started.

Samsung has just announced the addition of new watch faces meant for the Gear S2 smartwatch. These can be downloaded directly from Gear Apps. These watch faces bring world-renowned character Snoopy to life. However, it might not be meant for everyday usage as it doesn’t bring much to the table apart from visual appeal and a little bit of nostalgia.

Samsung has been actively involved in adding new features to its Tizen-based wearable. The company recently added the ability to view Twitter trends directly from your wearable with the help of a new watch face. Have you tried out the new Snoopy watch faces on your Gear S2? Let us know what you make of it.

[Poll] Which Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge color will you be going with?

Like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are being offered in four color options. Black, white and gold are making a return, while the rather glaring blue version has been replaced by the galactically more attractive silver model. The black color version of the S7 and S7 edge is much, much closer to actual black than the bluesy Black Sapphire color seen on the S6 and S6 edge, and we think the new handsets look great in the chosen paint jobs.

Black and silver are the colors members of the SamMobile team are pondering as we near market availability of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we would like to put the question to you. What Galaxy S7 or S7 edge color will you be going with when you purchase either handset? We are certainly bracing ourselves for the possibility of Samsung not offering all options in every market, but there’s no harm in hoping you will be able to pick up one of the company’s new flagships in the color you want.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung Pay now supports Wells Fargo credit and debit cards

Following months of complaints from customers, Samsung has finally updated its mobile payment gateway to include Wells Fargo debit and credit cards. This latest addition brings the total number of supported banks and credit unions in the United States up to an eye-watering 70.

This news comes a couple of weeks after it was officially revealed that Samsung Pay has been embraced by over 5-million users in the region who have collectively spent over $500-million using the service.

Samsung Pay adopted by customers significantly faster than Apple Pay

According to a report published by Bloomberg Business, Samsung’s mobile payment platform, Samsung Pay, has been adopted by customers significantly faster than Apple Pay, despite it currently only being available in two countries — the United States and South Korea. However, the payment processor is set to launch in Australia, Canada, Brazil, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom later this year, where it is expected to rake in more monthly users than the Cupertino company’s offering.

Mobile-payment researcher Crone Consulting LLC has revealed that over 5-million customers have registered to use Samsung Pay since its debut in the United States in September, and during that time have spent a total of $500-million, which is pretty astonishing when you take into account that Apple Pay has been around for 17-months and has only attracted 12-million monthly worldwide users.

The main reason behind Samsung Pay’s success is its non-dependency of merchants to have an NFC payment terminal installed. Thanks to the South Korean manufacturer’s acquisition of Loop Pay back in February 2015, Samsung Pay can emulate the magnetic strip on a credit card and process payments in the same way as if you’d swiped your card to pay for the goods. This dramatically increases the number of stores who accept Samsung Pay as it means they don’t have to fork out any cash for new equipment.

Are you a Samsung Pay user? Have you had positive experiences with the service? Would you recommend it to a friend? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung to supply its cloud printing services to Korea Post

Samsung is trying to expand its enterprise printing business globally as well as in its home country. Now, it has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea Post, South Korea’s postal service, to offer its cloud printing service. With the start of this service, Korea Post customers can use their mobile devices to print their mail and check delivery status.

The company’s cloud printing solution supports Android and iOS, so users can download the Samsung Cloud Print app on their personal devices to use the service. Prior to this, only desktop users with Windows operating system could use Korea Post’s service. Users can also pay using the app. Samsung is also trying to woo more clients with KNOX mobile security solution.

The South Korean electronics giant expects mobile printing to grow to account for 20 percent of its home country’s printing market as people move towards mobile devices. The company is gearing to catch up with old powerhouses in the printing market like HP, Canon, and Sharp. Samsung acquired Brazilian printing firm Simpress in January 2015 as a part of its expansion abroad.

S Service is Samsung’s new online customer support service

Samsung today announced the launch of a live online customer support service called S Service. It enables users to connect directly with a service agent through one-to-one remote support via their PC. S Service is a very convenient way for people to get expert help and since this is a chat-based service they don’t have to worry about background noise and can easily use the service wherever they have internet access.

To use S Service down the app at g-sis.co.kr, the app needs Windows 8 or higher. Click on Online Tech Support once the app is installed and enter the nature of your problem followed by a click on the Request button. The system will automatically notify users about how long they will have to wait and how many people are waiting in the queue to receive help. S Service is going to be available in English during weekdays from the United States (GMT +9 Monday 9:00 am to Friday  11:59 pm).

Top five reasons why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

With Samsung unveiling two differing Galaxy flagships this year, we understand that the choice can be somewhat difficult for the fans. In order to make that big decision a little easier for the users, we have decided to give you five good reasons as to why you should consider the Galaxy S7 edge over any other smartphones out there (or even the Galaxy S7 perhaps).

Bear in mind that most of the features and internals of the Galaxy S7 edge are identical to the Galaxy S7, so you might find that some of these points apply to the Galaxy S7 as well. Don’t forget to check out our hands-on of the two handsets for a closer look at what they offer, before going ahead.

Display

Well, this is easily the best reason to consider getting a Galaxy S7 edge over any other flagship in the industry today. The 5.5-inch dual edge AMOLED display is at its best here and thanks to Samsung’s always-on display, the handset is a must have in terms of hardware alone. Not to mention the Edge display makes for an extremely attractive smartphone.

Size

As you very well know, the Galaxy S7 edge is significantly bigger than the Galaxy S7 (5.5-inch display compared to 5.1-inch). While this should mean a thicker and bulkier device, the S7 edge is only 5 grams heavier than the Galaxy S7 and about 0.2mm thinner. This is all thanks to the slightly wider area, which allows Samsung to spread out the internal circuitry. This effectively means you’re getting more display real estate plus the brilliant curves on the display at little to no compromise.

Water resistance

This is by far one of the stand-out features of the Galaxy S7 series this year. This is an area where the smartphone (and its flat display sibling) completely trumps the competition.

Support for microSD cards

This again is a feature shared with the Galaxy S7 and we think will go a long way in appealing to the core Samsung audiences. The company created quite a furore when it left out the microSD card slot with all the 2015 Galaxy flagships. The company even has an explanation for that. This will also prove to be a crucial addition for North American markets as Samsung will only offer the 32GB version of the smartphone in the region.

Battery

While the Galaxy S7 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery pack, the Galaxy S7 edge sports a mammoth 3,600 mAh unit, which should be enough to last a complete day on a single charge for most users. This is in stark contrast to last year’s Galaxy S6 edge which only had a 2,600 mAh battery on-board. So one can say that Samsung has covered all its bases with this year’s edge flagship.

Samsung is already believed to be breaking records with the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge in terms of pre-orders, and the Galaxy S7 edge has been getting considerably higher consumer attention. Are there any other reasons you would pick the Galaxy S7 edge over other handsets? Sound off in the comments below.

Samsung explains everything about the Gear 360 in an infographic

Along with its flagship smartphones for 2016, the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung had also launched its first consumer-centric 360-degree camera, the Gear 360. The camera shoots 360-degree still images and videos. Since it’s a fairly new kind of product from Samsung, some consumers might be confused about its features and usage scenarios. So, the company has explained everything about the Gear 360 in a new infographic.

The new infographic explains how to shoot images and videos using the camera, the shooting modes that are available on the device, moments where it could be used, its specifications, compatible accessories, and the smartphones that are compatible with the Gear 360. Go ahead and check out the informative infographic that’s embedded below.
