New Galaxy Buds+ firmware update brings improved stability

Samsung has an excellent lineup of truly wireless earphones. The Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Buds+, and the Galaxy Buds Live have received commendable reviews from consumers and experts alike. Despite the launch of new wireless earbuds, the company hasn’t forgotten its older models and it has been consistently releasing software updates for the Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Buds+.

Today, the South Korean firm released a new software update for the Galaxy Buds+. The new update bears firmware version R175XXU0ATH7 and it has a file size of 1.38MB. The changelog mentions improved system stability and reliability. No new features are a part of this software update, and it only likely improves the performance of the wireless earbuds.

You can check for the update by launching the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone and then navigating to Earbuds software update » Download and install. There might also be a banner notification for the update right when you open the app. Samsung had released a software update in June 2020 to improve the performance of Ambient Sound. A few days later, the company released stability updates to the Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Buds+.

Samsung reportedly struggling to expand network infrastructure business in India

Samsung has been expanding its network infrastructure business in Canada, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the UK, and the US ever since Huawei and ZTE were being forced out of network deployment contracts due to security concerns. However, the South Korean firm has been reportedly struggling to expand its network business in India and has started slashing its workforce.

After ending its exclusive tie-up with Reliance Jio, India’s biggest cellular network, Samsung Networks is looking to expand its business. However, it will likely face challenges from older carriers like Airtel, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea despite the ban on Chinese network gear in the country. According to industry insiders, the South Korean firm initiated talks to supply 4G and 5G network equipment with older telcos, but those discussions didn’t yield any results.

Airtel recently awarded its network contracts to Ericsson and Nokia to replace existing Huawei gear. Samsung is looking to partner with an Indian IT firm to bid for BSNL’s LTE network contract for over 50,000 sites. The Indian government-owned telco is considering a multi-vendor system integrator model for its network contracts.

Samsung has slashed its workforce in the network business

While Samsung is exploring new business opportunities, it is being reported that it has laid off several hundred third-party employees in the country that were involved in Reliance Jio’s network contract. Reliance Jio is focusing on developing in-house 5G technology on the software side, and it might still need Samsung’s help in the 5G network hardware segment.

Airtel, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea are looking to deploy single-RAN radio equipment that could support 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. However, Samsung is reportedly trying to convince the operators to turn off legacy networks and switch to 4G + 5G RANs. Single-RAN BTS is cheaper for the carriers, and choosing Samsung’s 4G+5G RAN and buying more network gear for 2G and 3G networks from other network vendors will end up being costly.

There could be light at the end of the tunnel for Samsung, though. In the coming years, when carriers start offering 5G networks in India, the South Korean firm’s business could expand. Currently, Huawei has the highest market share in the 5G segment, with a market share of 35.7%. Ericsson and Nokia have a market share of 24.8% and 15.8%, respectively. Samsung is fourth in the segment with a market share in the 5G network segment is 13.2%.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 UK pricing leaks ahead of launch via Samsung’s website

Samsung had announced the Galaxy Z Fold 2 on stage during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event. However, the foldable phone didn’t launch alongside the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Buds Live, and the Galaxy Watch 3. Yesterday, the company revealed through launch invites that it will fully reveal the Galaxy Z Fold 2 on September 1. Now, the phone’s UK has been accidentally revealed by the South Korean firm.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2’s pre-order page went live yesterday with a price tag of £1,799. That’s £101 less than the price of the original Galaxy Fold in the UK, and that could be due to the exclusion of the Galaxy Buds from the box. Last year, the company was bundling its truly wireless earphones with the Galaxy Fold. However, it won’t bundle the Galaxy Buds+ or the Galaxy Buds Live with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The BTS unboxing of the device hints towards the inclusion of USB-C AKG-tuned earphones inside the box. Moreover, the new Galaxy Fold device only offers half the storage space (256GB) compared to the original Galaxy Fold (512GB), but that ends up making the phone cheaper.

In Europe, the second-generation Galaxy Fold device is rumored to be priced at €1,999. The company might also bundle a YouTube Premium subscription for free with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and a 5% cashback if the purchase is made using a Samsung Pay Card. Additional benefits for pre-ordering the Galaxy Z Fold 2 include the Galaxy Z Concierge service that provides 24×7, one-on-one assistance from a team of experts. Samsung is also offering a one-time screen repair service within 12 months of purchase for a low cost.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 will reportedly cost 100 euro less than the OG model

Samsung teased the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at Galaxy Unpacked 2020 but so far the company managed to keep the product’s launch price a secret. This anticipated nugget of information will likely be made public at Unpacked Part 2, the special launch event for the Galaxy Z Fold 2, but rumor has it that the second-generation Z Fold will cost 1,999 euro in most European countries.

If a recent report by WinFuture is true, this effectively means that Samsung succeeded in making the Galaxy Z Fold 2 cheaper than the original model. The OG Galaxy Fold was first released for 2,100 euro in most European markets but Samsung reportedly managed to lower the second-gen model’s price by nearly 5% despite the improvements made to the exterior design, hinge, and various specifications including the cover and foldable displays.

The launch price may be lower but there’s one big caveat

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has half the storage capacity of the Galaxy Fold and a total of five cameras instead of six, but these might not be the reasons why it may have gotten cheaper. Let’s not forget that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 also sports a larger cover display protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, a larger Infinity-O foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and faster 25W charging, so the cost reduction achieved through some downgrades should be offset by considerable upgrades in other key areas.

In practice, Samsung may have been able to lower the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s launch price a notch by removing the wireless earbuds from the retail box. The Galaxy Fold shipped with a pair of Galaxy Buds+ but so far there’s been no indication of Samsung wanting to follow the same strategy as before.

On the contrary, the BTS unboxing and first impressions video suggests that the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s retail box contains a pair of regular, wired AKG earbuds. The type of AKG earbuds that you get along with the Galaxy Note 20 series, assuming you live outside the USA.

This hasn’t been officially confirmed yet so it remains subject to change, same as the rumored 1,999 euro price. Perhaps the final product will be paired with wireless earbuds, but so far this accessory has seemingly been left out.

All in all, Galaxy Z Fold 2 buyers might be able to acquire the foldable phone for a lower price up-front and this could work in their favor as long as they aren’t in the market for a pair of wireless earbuds. Otherwise, if they’re looking to buy the Galaxy Buds+ or the Galaxy Buds Live along with the new foldable, they might end up paying more in total.

On what side of the fence do you stand? Is paying less for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 sans wireless earbuds a better proposition than paying a little bit extra for an accessory that you might not need? Or do you think Samsung might be doing Galaxy Z Fold 2 buyers a disservice?

The Sero goes on sale in the Netherlands with a limited-time bonus in tow

Samsung’s lifestyle TV, The Sero, is now available in the Netherlands earlier than expected. The company originally planned to bring The Sero to the Netherlands on September 7 but Samsung has just made a new announcement confirming today’s earlier-than-anticipated market release. The world’s most influential TV manufacturer is not only bringing The Sero to the Netherlands earlier than planned but it has also prepared a special bonus for early adopters.

Customers buying The Sero before September 27 will receive a set of The Sero wheels worth 99 euro for free. The Sero is a rotating TV that’s inseparable from its stand, or base if you will, and comes with its own 4.1 channel 60-watt sound system. The base is what makes it possible for the QLED 4K display to rotate in landscape and portrait modes depending on the type of content you’re mirroring from your smartphone.

The Sero has a 43-inch display and it’s labeled by Samsung as the most mobile-friendly TV for good reasons. It is sort of a niche product designed for avid smartphone users, but of course, it can also be used as a regular TV instead of a smartphone extension. Nevertheless, Samsung’s thought process when creating The Sero was that 90% of videos found online are shot in portrait mode, therefore it created a rotating TV that can adjust according to the media content it displays. The Sero is compatible with Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.1 or higher.

Samsung sued for patent infringement over Wireless PowerShare tech

A lawsuit filed with a Marshall Division court earlier this month alleges Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare tech infringes on a 2015 patent owned by Rockwall, Texas-based Garrity Power Services (GPS) LLC. Public comptroller records yield surprisingly little information about this firm, at least relative to the fact it’s been operating for just under 15 years. GPS has a sister entity Neosen Energy LLC incorporated six years ago in Plano, Texas by one Paul Garrity, a Scottish-born, U.S.-based engineer who is also listed as the co-inventor of the patent that Samsung is accused of infringing.

The litigation filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas alleges direct infringement of at least two claims from the (20 strong) patent. It accuses Samsung of another 13 instances of IP contravention. The case is far from straightforward because Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare technology has a patent of its own, also registered in 2015, albeit not in the U.S. but its home country of South Korea, whereas IP was submitted to the USPTO the following year prior to getting approved and published in 2017. Samsung cites three other patents as the direct basis of its disputed technology: an LG Electronics one from 2012, a MediaTek IP from 2015, and another one of its own registered properties from 2014.

Lawsuit alleges Samsung made ‘hundreds of millions of dollars’ from the infringement

Among other things, GPS states Samsung invested millions into promoting the Wireless PowerShare feature, concluding that to this date, the Korean tech giant continues to earn “hundreds of millions of dollars” in U.S. revenue directly attributable to the alleged misappropriation. In conclusion, the plaintiff requested a trial by jury meant to rule on its relief demands, which include an injunction, damages, enhanced damages, royalties, and both pre- and post-judgment interest on all of the above.

Samsung has been using the Wireless PowerShare trademark since early last year, debuting the eponymous technology as one of the key selling points of the Galaxy S10 series launched in February of 2019. By April, GPS served Samsung with a claim chart which the smartphone giant refused, the lawsuit reads.

For added context, Israel-based Aaron Jungreis is listed as the co-inventor of the disputed patent, titled “Apparatus, System and Method to Wirelessly Charge/Discharge a Battery”. He shares six other registered IPs with Mr. Garrity, and is listed as a (co-)inventor of another 30, whereas his research partner has 46 patents to his name in total, according to USPTO records.

Assuming this case goes to trial, it will likely take years to run its course. Which isn’t to say a settlement is out of the question, though there’s still no indication of whether Samsung is considering one, or is adamant to defend itself in the court of law.

Samsung maintained NAND flash leadership in Q2 and increased revenue

Samsung was the biggest player in the global NAND flash segment in Q2 2020 even though its market share dropped by 1.7% compared to Q1, says a new report from Yonhap citing market intelligence provider TrendForce. Samsung’s global NAND flash market share stood at 31.4% and the company registered revenues of $4.54 billion in the second quarter, up by 0.9% from Q1.

Samsung’s NAND flash shipments dropped by roughly 3% quarter-on-quarter, according to the research firm, as the global pandemic led to lower demand for smartphones. Even so, Samsung was able to take advantage of increased average selling prices. The ASP for NAND modules rose by nearly 5% quarter-on-quarter.

The overall global NAND flash industry experienced an increase of 6.5% in revenue in Q2. Even though smartphone demand has dropped, demand for NAND chips reportedly surged because the global pandemic had forced many people to work from home.

As far as Q3 goes, TrendForce estimates that NAND flash manufacturers will be faced with an oversupply problem because PC makers and server companies have reportedly stocked up on inventory, and therefore shipments are likely to decline throughout the July-September period.

Samsung led the NAND flash market in Q2 and was followed by Kioxia with 17.2% share, Western Digital with 15.5% share, and SK Hynix with 11.7% share.

Samsung awards another LCD TV contract to former subsidiary

Samsung continues adding to its LCD outsourcing effort which most recently expanded with a TV contract given to Hansol Technics, a South Korean display manufacturer based out of Seoul. Hansol was actually a Samsung Group subsidiary until it was spun off in 1991. Samsung family relatives maintained ownership of the chaebol to this day. Samsung already sourced 2.5 million LCD TVs from Hansol last year, having now quadrupled its annual orders to 10 million units.

Hansol will hence be handling a quarter of Samsung’s 2020 LCD TV shipments in total, Far Eastern media reports. Despite the company-wide downsizing, this year’s coronavirus pandemic actually increased the global demand for affordable LCD products, consequently improving Samsung’s bottom line in the segment.

Coronavirus pandemic actually boosted Samsung’s LCD revenue

Naturally, the addition of Hansol Technics to Samsung’s LCD outsourcing initiative lowers the chances of the company enlisting outside help from even more third parties. As a reminder, recent reports suggested Samsung is even willing to contract fierce rival LG Display for solving its LCD problem. The global outsourcing effort started with Sharp back in spring, steadily adding to its momentum ever since. Even the COVID-19 crisis did little to delay it.

The new and improved Hansol contract is just the latest step in Samsung’s undertaking aimed at completely shutting down in-house LCD production by the end of 2020. Nearly a year ago, the conglomerate concluded that first-party LCD plants simply aren’t worth maintaining on any significant scale, which is why it’s currently in the process of upgrading its remaining LCD operations into OLED lines as part of an $11 billion investment which began last summer.

Samsung to start remote working pilot program for some employees

The COVID-19 situation has forced various companies around the world to let their employees work remotely. Even Samsung had to close its factories and stores for a few weeks earlier this year due to the fear of the virus. Now, the company has announced that it will start a pilot remote working program for some of its employees.

After the resurgence of the deadly virus in South Korea a few days ago, the company has mentioned that it will allow its employees in the country to work from home. Those who apply for the remote working program will be able to work from home starting next month. The company will run the pilot program for a month before deciding whether it should continue and expand the remote working program in the future.

Samsung’s employees who work in the mobile and consumer electronics divisions can work remotely, but workers in the company’s chip business arm will be allowed to work remotely only after the assessment of the pilot program. Although the South Korean firm has been allowing remote working to some of its employees since February, only those employees were allowed who are ill or pregnant.

South Korea reported 441 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, its highest daily figure since March 7. The country’s new virus-infected cases have been staying in the three-figures since August 14. Since then, conglomerates, including LG, Hyundai, and Samsung, are adopting remote working programs for their employees.

Samsung collaborates with bag maker Joseph & Stacey for Galaxy Note 20

Samsung has upped its marketing performance over the past few years. Last year, it tied up with Thom Browne for the Galaxy Z Flip. Earlier this year, the company collaborated with K-pop music sensation BTS for the Galaxy S20 and other devices. Now, the company has announced that it has joined hands with fashion accessory firm Joseph & Stacey for marketing the Galaxy Note 20 series.

Joseph & Stacey is a Seoul, South Korea-based firm that is famous for its bags and wallets. Samsung is collaborating with the firm for the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Under the marketing deal, the companies will release pleated knit bags that are designed to match the colors of the Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones. The companies will also hold various marketing events together.

Samsung and Joseph & Stacey are planning to promote a contest where consumers are asked to design their own bag ideas using the Galaxy Note 20 or the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s S Pen. The fashion firm will then select designs from 100 participants and manufacture them. The South Korean tech firm says that the collaboration targets young consumers who consider a smartphone their fashion accessory.

As you can see in the images below, Joseph & Stacey will release bags that complement the colors of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Samsung is also planning to release a Thom Browne version of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 next month.
