The Galaxy Tab S5e was launched in the US last year with a price of $399.99 for the 64GB variant and $479.99 for the 128GB variant. Samsung had dropped the price of the 64GB variant of the mid-range tablet a few weeks ago. Now, the company is offering a discount on the 128GB variant of the Galaxy Tab S5e as well.

You can now purchase the 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy Tab S5e (Wi-Fi only) for just $399.99, which is an $80 discount from the tablet’s original price of $479.99 in the US. You can purchase both the variants of the Galaxy Tab S5e at reduced prices in the US via Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung’s website.

The Galaxy Tab S5e is available in three colors—Black, Gold, and Silver—through all three retailers. Amazon is offering a four-month subscription to YouTube Premium with the Galaxy Tab S5e, while Samsung is offering a two-month YouTube Premium subscription. However, Samsung has a $300 trade-in offer and 24-month as well as 36-month financing schemes without any interest. Best Buy has a 12-month, interest-free EMI scheme for $33.34 per month.

Galaxy Tab S5e specifications

The tablet features a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with QHD+ resolution and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. It runs Android 9 with One UI, but it is bound to receive the Android 10 update with One UI 2.0 in the future. The Galaxy Tab S5e is equipped with the Snapdragon 670 SoC, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB storage, and a microSD card slot.

The Galaxy Tab S5e has a 13MP AF rear-facing camera with 4K video recording and an 8MP front-facing camera. Other features of the mid-range tablet from Samsung include AKG-tuned quad-speaker setup, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.0 Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is powered by a 7,040mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy users get bonus cars in Forza Street racing game

Forza Street is a free-to-play car racing game from Microsoft, and it debuted on Android via the Galaxy Store. It was unveiled during the launch of the Galaxy S20 in February. Today, Microsoft is launching the game for all Android and iOS users with free bonus cars for everyone, but Samsung Galaxy users get additional goodies via in-game content.

While all smartphone users are getting the 2017 Ford GT as a welcome gift if they play the game during the first 30 days from May 5, only Galaxy smartphone and tablet users get the Ford Mustang GT for free via the Founder’s Pack. You need to make sure that you download Forza Street from the Galaxy Store, though, and not through the Play Store. All Galaxy S20 users also get the Chevrolet Corvette C6 for free.

You can find bonus cars in the message center inside the game after you sign in. Those cars can then be added to your garage, and then you can start using them in races.

Forza Street is developed by Microsoft’s Turn 10 Studios, and it offers a cinematic racing experience and a massive collection of legendary cars. It has a quick race option as well as an immersive endless story mode with multiple paths. The free-to-play racing game is available for Android, iOS, and Windows 10 devices. It is Turn 10 Studios’ first attempt at a dedicated, touch-friendly mobile game.

Samsung Internet privacy and customization options are widely rolling out

Samsung Internet was updated over the weekend to version 11.2.1.3. The latest release adds a couple of features which were first made available in a Beta build. One of these additions aims to improve security, or at the very least, improve the browsing experience in certain situations. This is all thanks to a new toggle that’s been added with the latest Samsung Internet update in the Privacy and security section, which allows users to prevent websites from taking them to other websites that they didn’t visit when pressing the Back button.

The second major addition to Samsung Internet Browser is a quality of life and customization feature. With the latest version installed, users can go to the Browser’s settings menu, access Appearance, tap Customize menu, and rearrange, add, or remove features from the hamburger menu as well as the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. The bar is now customizable and allows users to add or remove items such as a Refresh button, a Settings shortcut, and more. The navigation bar can accommodate up to seven shortcuts.

To download the latest Samsung Internet Browser update and take advantage of the new privacy and customization settings, open the app, go to Settings, and tap About Samsung Internet. Alternatively, you can grab the app from the Galaxy Store from the Updates section, or if the update doesn’t show up, you can always download the latest version of the app from our  APK archive. Just tap the link on your phone.

USA residents can now buy Galaxy Book Flex, Book Ion, Book Flex alpha

Samsung USA is adding three new notebooks to its portfolio starting today, with prospective buyers now having the option to choose between the Galaxy Book Flex, Galaxy Book Ion, as well as the Galaxy Book Flex ⍺ (alpha).

The three notebooks have their landing pages up and running on Samsung USA’s portal, but the online store pages are not yet live as of this writing. However, this should change by the end of the day, according to Samsung’s official announcement.

Customers can pick one of two configurations for each model

The Galaxy Book Flex, Book Flex alpha, and Book Ion come in two different flavors, each. The Book Flex and Ion can be acquired with 13.3 or 15.6-inch displays, whereas the Book Flex alpha is available only with a 13.3-inch display which can be driven by either an Intel Core i5 or i7 10th Gen CPU.

Specifically, the Galaxy Book Ion comes with an Intel Core i7-10510U, the Book Flex sports an i7-1065G7 CPU, while the Galaxy Book Flex alpha can be equipped with an i5-10210U or i7-10510U CPU.

There are various other differences between these models. For example, only the Flex and Flex alpha have a convertible 2-in-1 design (hence the moniker) and a QLED touchscreen. On the other hand, the Galaxy Book Ion follows a more conventional notebook design lacking a 2-in-1 hinge and touchscreen capabilities. For a closer look at their specifications and how these notebooks differ from one another, check out Samsung’s Compare page by hitting the link.

Samsung makes no mention of USA prices for the Galaxy Book Flex, Book Flex alpha, and Book Ion in its announcement, and since the store page is not yet live, this information is currently lacking. However, Samsung had previously revealed the Galaxy Book Flex alpha’s expected price of $829.99, and it’s safe to assume that the Book Flex and Ion have a higher entry price, since the Flex alpha was designed as a more budget alternative from the very beginning.

Samsung India launches post-lockdown sale of TVs, appliances

Samsung India today unveiled plans for a large-scale sale of TVs and appliances, offering interest-free installment plans and casbacks on a variety of products. The company’s intention is to incentivize prospective buyers in the country who are currently unable to purchase its offerings due to the ongoing lockdown. More specifically, Samsung made arrangements with many of its existing third-party distributors in India so as to streamline the process of pre-booking its televisions and appliances online. In effect, the sale should also help those very same offline retailers stay in business.

Consumers, on the other hand, have no-cost EMIs and up to 15% in cashback promotions to look forward to. Anyone interested in taking advantage of the new deals can do so directly from Samsung India’s website, where the “Stay Home, Stay Happy” page is already live.

Extended warranties, ZEE5 Premium subscriptions, and more

As for when exactly will the pre-booked devices arrive, that’s still up in the air. Samsung’s newest set of deals was announced on the same day the Indian government extended the nationwide coronavirus lockdown for the third time, with the restrictions to business activity and movement now applying until May 17th.

On the bright side, Samsung’s latest campaign encompasses a wide range of its products, including the latest 8K QLED TVs, ACs, and other appliances from the company. The aforementioned cashback program applies to credit and debit purchases made with HDFC cards, regardless of whether they’re made with EMIs. As for the no-cost finance plans, those can extend up to 18 months, Samsung confirmed. Extended warranties and other bonuses like free month-long subscriptions to ZEE5 Premium are also part of the package, depending on the exact product.

Samsung head likely to issue mandatory public apology this month

Samsung Vice Chairman and heir apparent, Lee Jae-yong, is expected to soon issue a public apology over company misconduct. The move was previously requested by an independent compliance committee ensuring Samsung is maintaining a required level of transparency in its corporate dealings. It also came with a deadline that Samsung promptly postponed to May 11th due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Sources close to the company now claim Samsung won’t ask for another delay, though details about the upcoming apology remain slim. The overall proceedings are reportedly accelerating due to the country’s impending need for economic revival. In other words, both Samsung and Korean authorities are eager to put this episode behind them.

Lee to continue as Samsung Vice Chairman

Lee has long been poised to take over as chairman of Samsung, being the eldest child and only son of founder Lee Jae-yong. The latter hasn’t been heard of since 2014, when he suffered a debilitating heart attack which is said to have left him in a comatose state. A strong philial tradition permeating both Samsung and South Korea means the succession won’t happen officially so long as the incapacitated chairman is alive.

Lee returned to lead Samsung in early 2018 after almost a year of incarceration on charges of embezzlement, bribery, and perjury. Despite a first-instance ruling sentencing him to five years in prison, his legal team slashed the term by half on appeal, allowing him to be released on four-year probation. The Korean Supreme Court overruled that decision in 2019, returning it to the Seoul High Court. The monitoring committee mandating Lee’s public apology has been formed in the meantime, and not cooperating with it by e.g. refusing to issue a public apology would likely land Lee back in prison.

The scandal prompting his 2017 arrest ultimately led to the downfall and incarceration of Korean President Park Geun-hye. In his role as a Samsung Chairman, Lee’s father has previously been found guilty of tax evasion and bribery as well but received pardons on both occasions.

Samsung remains tightlipped on the matter, with a company spokesman saying “Samsung is tackling the issue very prudently and thoroughly. We will make an announcement if we have to.”

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will only receive quarterly security updates now

Samsung doesn’t release more than two major Android OS updates for its devices and doesn’t really keep flagship devices on the monthly release schedule for security updates beyond three years. That’s just the way it is and there’s no indication of this changing any time soon.

With the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ now crossing that threshold, it’s no surprise that the company has shifted both of these devices to the quarterly cycle. That means both of these devices will no longer receive monthly security updates.

No more monthly security updates for the Galaxy S8/S8+

Samsung had been sending out monthly security updates for these handsets up till now, releasing one just last month which brought the April 2020 security patch. Given that the Galaxy S8/S8+ hit shelves on April 21, 2017, it has been a full three years since these devices were released.

It was about time that Samsung shifted them from the monthly update cycle to the quarterly cycle, and it has done just that now. What does being on the quarterly schedule mean exactly? Samsung will simply bundle all of the security updates in one firmware update that’s going to be sent out once every quarter.

There was obviously no question of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ getting the Android 10 update. They have received the two major OS updates that they were entitled to. Going forward, these devices will only receive one update per quarter. No new features have been added to the devices for quite some time now anyway, so there’s no use expecting that the next update will bring anything other than the security patch.

The Galaxy S8 Active is still on the monthly update cycle. It arrived in August 2017 so it still has a ways to go before hitting the three-year threshold after which it will also be relegated to the quarterly cycle.

Galaxy S10 lineup and the Galaxy A50 also get the latest security update

Samsung is on a roll today, sending the latest May 2020 security update to a handful of devices. The company has been at it since last week and many of its top devices have already received the update.

It’s now the Galaxy S10 lineup’s turn. All models are now receiving the latest security update which has also been released for the Galaxy A50, Samsung’s top mid-range smartphone from last year. The update has already been released for both Galaxy Note 10 models.

Samsung releases May 2020 patch for more devices

Samsung is rolling out firmware version G970FXXS5CTD1, G973FXXS5CTD1 and G975FXXS5CTD1 for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ respectively. The G977BXXS4CTD1 firmware is also out for the Galaxy S10 5G. The update has been released in markets across Europe. If you want to download it instantly, just click on the relevant device name to download the latest update from our firmware section.

The May 2020 security patch update is also out for the Galaxy A50. Samsung has released firmware version A505FNXXS4BTCA for the device. It’s currently rolling out in Europe and should be available for the device in other markets as well. This firmware is also available for download from our database.

Samsung hasn’t detailed the May 2020 security patch as yet so it’s unclear precisely what fixes it brings. However, that hasn’t stopped the company from releasing the update for a handful of devices, including but not limited to the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip.

Samsung doubles Galaxy S20 subsidies ahead of iPhone SE launch

Samsung quite literally doubled down on Galaxy S20 subsidies in bid to boost sales of its newest high-end smartphones. The company’s latest move was directed at its domestic market as the three largest carriers in South Korea all began further incentivizing Galaxy S20 purchases in recent weeks. Consequently, the value of subsidies that SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ are offering to prospective Galaxy S20 buyers is now going up to 500,000 won, or just under $410.

This is in line with how the company has been handling the Galaxy S20’s weak debut in other markets. For example, its U.S. arm recently launched an unprecedentedly aggressive buyback program, offering up to 50% off on select Galaxy S20 models.

Galaxy S20 sales almost 40% below the Galaxy S10

Industry watchers also believe that this is Samsung’s way of pre-empting the launch of Apple’s new budget iPhone SE in South Korea. The new iPhone offers powerful specs in a smaller footprint and at a more aggressive price point, which is why it’s expected perform well in the market.

The newest subsidies were reportedly passed on directly from Samsung, meaning telecom operators in South Korea are still selling the Galaxy S20 devices at a markup similar to that from two months ago. None of that is to say their bottom lines aren’t getting erased by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s just that Samsung’s sense of urgency is greater. Sources estimate the sales of the Galaxy S20 line are between 20% and 40% lower compared to the Galaxy S10 range.

This concerning state of affairs also puts Samsung’s near-term 5G plans in question. The Galaxy S20 series was meant to mark the start of its mainstream adoption, not to mention Samsung’s plans to launch a number of cheaper 5G smartphones this month. It remains to be seen what kind of results that strategy will achieve now that buying smartphones isn’t exactly near the top of most people’s list of priorities.

Galaxy S20 boosts U.S. 5G adoption even as sales falter

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series gave 5G smartphones a significant boost in the United States, new industry data reveals. Even though the new device lineup hasn’t been selling particularly well compared to its predecessors, it’s still by far the most popular new option among 5G-ready handsets. Over the course of the last ten weeks, every fifth smartphone sold stateside had 5G capabilities and most of those were part of Samsung’s latest flagship series.

It’s particularly notable because the Galaxy S20 is the first flagship series from Samsung to support 5G across the entire lineup by default. Given the overall state of the U.S. market, it’s likely Samsung’s market share in the 5G segment will fall once Apple adds 5G connectivity to its iPhone portfolio, however.

Galaxy S20 U.S. sales still looking weak

The newly reported data, collected by analytics company M Science, also confirms the Galaxy S20 sales remain weak. While the firm observed a small boost several weeks back, it attributed the change to the stimulus checks the U.S. government started handing out in April. Regardless, Samsung still has major reasons for concern as M Science estimates the Galaxy S20 is doing about twice as worse as the Galaxy S10 line did in terms of weekly sales. Whereas last year’s devices surpassed 400,000 sales and the Galaxy S9 line peaked just below 550,000 units, the Galaxy S20 family failed to even hit 200,000 weekly sales, as per the same research.

Industry watchers are speculating the scarce availability of cutting-edge 5G networks is a major factor contributing to the Galaxy S20 family’s weak debut. The pandemic-induced economic crisis that’s now gaining traction in the U.S. is unlikely to help improve its prospects, either. Samsung appears to be well-aware of that fact, having just recently debuted the most generous buyback program in its history to American consumers, offering its newest flagships at 50% off.

Latest Galaxy Z Flip firmware update brings May security patch

Samsung has started rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy Z Flip today. The latest update for its new foldable smartphone brings the security patch for the month of May 2020. The previous update for this device was released two weeks ago.

While that particular update had brought much in the way of new features for this device, the one that’s being sent out today doesn’t bring much instead of the May 2020 security patch, which Samsung is yet to detail.

New Galaxy Z Flip firmware update brings latest security patch

The Galaxy Z Flip is far from the only Samsung device to have received the May 2020 security patch. Samsung has already rolled it out for the Galaxy S20 lineup, the Galaxy Fold as well as the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+.

Samsung has been pretty quick in rolling out the latest security maintenance release to some of its top devices. It has done that even before the actual contents of this security update have been revealed. That information may take another couple of days to arrive, it seems.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version F700FXXS1ATD9 for the Galaxy Z Flip. It’s available in markets across Europe right now, including but not limited to the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece and Luxembourg among other countries. The update is available for download right away from our firmware section.

It won’t be long now before this update is available in other markets where the Galaxy Z Flip has gone on sale. Users should expect to see an update notification on their devices in a few days from now.

One UI 2.1 update for Galaxy Note 9 scheduled to arrive in June

After phones in the Galaxy Note 10 series and the Galaxy S10 series received the One UI 2.1 update last month, it was being speculated that the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S9 won’t receive the One UI 2.1 update. However, signs of One UI 2.1 update for the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S9 series slowly started appearing.

Now a moderator of the Samsung Members community in South Korea has revealed that the One UI 2.1 update for the Galaxy Note 9 is scheduled to arrive in June 2020. We had recently reported that the company is testing firmware version N960FXXU5ETD5 and N960NKSU3ETD1 in Europe and South Korea, respectively, and that these are One UI 2.1 updates for the Galaxy Note 9.

A moderator from the software team at Samsung had revealed last week that the company is figuring out which features could be added to One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy Note 9. The South Korean firm might initially release the One UI 2.1 update in its home market and then in other regions throughout the world.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite uses the same Exynos 9810 processor as that of the Galaxy Note 9, and the former recently received the One UI 2.1 update. So, we don’t see a reason why the Galaxy Note 9 should not get the same update. The One UI 2.1 update brings new camera features like Single Take and Pro Mode for video. Other features include the AR Zone app, Music Share, and Quick Share.
