Samsung has gracefully tackled the NAND and DRAM markets in Q4 2021

Samsung maintained the lead across the NAND and DRAM market segments and the company improved its market share by a couple of points in Q4 2020. Globally, the NAND market experienced a quarterly revenue decline of 2.9% in Q4, whereas global DRAM revenues were up 1.1% from the previous quarter. As far as Samsung’s performance goes, the company captured 32.9% and 42.1% of the NAND and DRAM markets, respectively, reveals market research firm TrendForce.

Samsung’s NAND business was helped by Chinese OEMs and the PC market

Even though the global NAND market fell a few by nearly 3% in Q4 2020, Samsung was able to increase its market share because of a couple of factors, says the research firm.

Samsung’s clients from China, with the exception of Huawei, have reportedly increased their component inventories in an attempt to increase their mobile market share. Meanwhile, PC OEMs had to keep up with an unexpected increase in demand for notebooks.

These factors led to higher NAND sales for Samsung throughout the fourth quarter. The company’s NAND flash shipments rose by 7-9% Quarter-on-Quarter, however, this also had an effect on prices. The market trend has caused an oversupply and Samsung was forced to adjust, i.e., lower its prices. As a result, the company experienced a 3.4% QoQ revenue decline.

This year, market watchers expect Samsung to continue leading the NAND market as the company increases the production capacity of its V6 process for SSDs and UFS solutions.

Samsung increases DRAM market share and revenue

In contrast with the performance of the NAND segment throughout Q4 2020, global DRAM revenues were up 1.1% Quarter-on-Quarter. Samsung recorded a 3.1% revenue increase and its operating profit margins fell to 36% from 41% in the previous quarter.

DRAM quotes have declined in Q4 but Samsung was able to retain at least a 30% profit margin. The company has reportedly offset the downward pressure on revenue by increasing DRAM shipments.

The research firm expects DRAM quotes to rebound from rock bottom in Q1 2021 and kickstart the cyclical upturn in DRAM prices.

Galaxy M51 owners can now experience One UI 3.1 after the latest update

Another mid-range Galaxy smartphone is receiving the Android 11-based One UI 3 firmware update, and as you can already tell from the title above, it’s the Galaxy M51 that does the honors this time around.

The Galaxy M51 is now getting the Android 11 update in Russia. As always, the rollout is expanding gradually and the firmware should reach more markets soon. Galaxy M51 owners in Russia can identify the update by firmware version M515FXXU2CUB7.

Along with the new One UI 3 features, the latest firmware update for the Galaxy M51 also improves security as it’s rolling out alongside the March 2021 security patch.

This is the first major Android OS update for the Galaxy M51

The Galaxy M51 is still a relatively new smartphone. It was released in September running Android 10 and One UI 2.5 out of the box, so this is the first time when it receives a major update with significant changes across the board.

We were able to test Android 11 on the Galaxy M51 for a short while and we can confirm that the version of One UI is 3.1. It replaces One UI 2.5 and it introduces a reworked user interface with new animations, as well as a handful of new features. However, this is the Core version of One UI 3.1 so it’s not going to deliver a flagship-grade experience.

Galaxy M51 owners in Russia should now be able to download the firmware from the Software update menu inside the Settings app. They can also acquire the latest update by downloading it from our firmware archive.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is joining the One UI 3.1 family after the latest update

Last month the One UI 3.1 firmware update got released for the Galaxy S10 series, more specifically the original trio of flagships comprising the Galaxy S10e, the S10, and the S10+. Of course, there is another Galaxy smartphone that bears the S10 badge, and it was released later down the line as a Lite model. It, too, is now making the jump to the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 firmware update.

Android 11 and One UI 3.1 is now available for the Galaxy S10 Lite in Spain, where customers can identify the update by firmware version G770FXXU4EUBA. It’s being distributed alongside the March 2021 security patch that addresses a few issues including an Exynos 990 vulnerability, though this won’t mean much for Galaxy S10 Lite owners given that the phone is equipped with a Snapdragon 855 SoC.

Wireless DeX should be included with the new update, but isn’t

The Galaxy S10 Lite was first updated to Android 11 and One UI 3.0 in December, so all those fresh changes to the user interface have already been implemented a few months ago.

One UI 3.1 is here to improve existing One UI 3.0 features, but one of the update’s biggest highlight should’ve been the addition of wireless DeX. The feature was added to the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+, but it was also promised by Samsung for the Galaxy S10 Lite. Sadly, it’s missing from this latest release and we’re unsure if it will be added later down the line.

As always, you can check if the latest update is available for you to download by opening the Settings app on your phone and accessing the Software update section. Alternatively, if you want to skip waiting for the OTA release, SamMobile lets readers download official Samsung firmware for free. Just head down to our archive and search for the Galaxy model that interests you.

Galaxy S21 sales hit four-year highs in fourth week on the market

The Galaxy S21 series kept selling well throughout its first month on the market, proving that its strong debut was not a dud. Samsung’s been enjoying a particularly strong momentum in its home country, which is hardly a surprise; South Korea’s always been among its most loyal flagship markets for obvious reasons.

Four weeks following its release, the Galaxy S21 line’s sales reached a four-year high, new industry tracker data reveals. The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra have already sold a combined total of 590,000 units in the Far Eastern country.

How can Samsung continue this impetus in Q2 2021?

For added context, Samsung’s last flagship generation that had a better debut month was the Galaxy S8 range. The 2017 lineup amassed roughly 620,000 domestic sales in its first four weeks on the market.

Samsung’s decision to aggressively cut down on the introductory price of its flagships thus appears to have been the correct move – even this early into the Galaxy S21 life cycle. Local media reports that the baseline Galaxy S21 model accounts for almost half of all month-one sales.

To say that Samsung needed to start this year with a win would be an understatement, as illustrated by the fact that it was labeled the second-biggest loser in the global smartphone growth race last year. And since the first one was Huawei who’s up to its neck in sanctions, that second-to-last placing pretty much means Samsung could not have done any worse relative to its rivals. On the bright side, the Galaxy S21 family set it firmly on the road of complete recovery that it’s likely to achieve before the end of the year.

Samsung was third-biggest smartwatch brand in 2020

Samsung makes excellent smartwatches based on the Tizen operating system, but it still ranks third when it comes to the smartwatch market share. According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s market share increased in Q3 and Q4 of 2020, but it still ranked third when it comes to full-year 2020.

The South Korean firm reportedly shipped 9.1 million smartwatches in 2020. In comparison, Apple shipped 33.9 million Apple Watches last year, thanks to impressive sales of the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Series 6. The Cupertino-based firm has been the number one smartwatch brand ever since it launched the first Apple Watch. Huawei shipped 11.1 million smartwatches in 2020, and its shipments improved by 26%.

In Q4 2020, Apple’s market share improved to 40% as the company eroded the sales of other firms. Samsung’s market share improved from 7% in Q2 2020 to 10% in Q3 and Q4 of 2020. As the year came to an end, Huawei’s smartwatch market share slipped to 8%. The smartwatch market grew just 1.5% last year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the average selling price of smartwatches is expected to improve.

In 2020, Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 3, and the South Korean firm is rumored to be switching to Google’s Wear OS operating system later this year.
