Even Google knows Android 12 is coming to Samsung devices this year

Samsung’s taking its sweet time in advancing the Android 12 and One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series beyond the very first beta release. It’s making us wonder if the company will be able to stick to its official goal of releasing Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 lineup in late 2021, but it seems Google isn’t worried.

Google announced today that it is officially releasing the source code for the final version of Android 12. In addition to revealing that the update would arrive on Pixel smartphones in the next few weeks, Google says it’s also coming to Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices later this year.

Naturally, the part about Samsung Galaxy devices is what we’re interested in. This isn’t the first time that Google has provided an estimate for when a new version of Android would arrive on Galaxy devices, but it’s good to see nonetheless. It will also be interesting to see if Samsung will bring the update to more than just the Galaxy S21 series before 2022.

Of course, the biggest question is exactly how long we’ll have to wait for the stable Android 12 and One UI 4.0 update to start rolling out. Considering Samsung has only released a single beta build for the Galaxy S21 series till now, it could take a while.

The public Android 11 rollout for the Galaxy S20 series started in the first week of December last year, and if we’re being honest, we won’t mind waiting until the same time this year for Android 12 to arrive. What matters most is that Samsung makes the release as smooth and stable as possible instead of rushing it out the door, and if that means testing our patience, so be it.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down, and it’s not your phone’s fault

If your Galaxy phone is currently giving you trouble in refreshing your Instagram or Facebook feed and making you wonder why that WhatsApp text you sent a few hours ago hasn’t received a response yet, you’re not alone. All three services are facing an outage right now and are down for millions of users around the world.

Both mobile and desktop versions of these services are affected, and Facebook has acknowledged that there’s an issue and that it’s working on a fix. But there’s no estimate for when things will go back to normal, and given how it’s been many hours since the three services have been down, the issue looks to be a serious one and may not be resolved for a while longer.

Whatever the case may be, you can follow Facebook’s Twitter account (yes, the irony isn’t lost on us) to find out when service is restored. We’ll update this article once there are any new developments, and in the meantime, maybe check out our YouTube channel to pass the time as you wait for your favorite social media apps to come back online.

Fairphone shows Samsung how you can support phones for much longer

Samsung is becoming more eco-conscious every year, or at least, its efforts in this area are becoming more visible to the consumers, for better or worse. For instance, these efforts led to the removal of the wall charger from the retail boxes of recent flagship models, but on the bright side, the retail packaging was streamlined, and it’s now made almost entirely out of recycled materials.

But while Samsung is showing the world that it’s aware of the e-waste problem on one hand, on the other, the company continues releasing tons of mid-range phones and rebranded models every year. Some of Samsung’s low-cost phones barely get updated with new versions of Android OS, and as a rule of thumb, the cheaper the phone, the more likely it is to receive Android OS updates later than desired.

Because of this, customers are inclined to upgrade to newer smartphone models more often, and ultimately, this leads back to the same problem of e-waste. And despite Samsung’s efforts to minimize these negative effects on the environment, other smaller companies seemingly do a better job keeping the Earth clean.

Take Fairphone, for example. It’s a relatively small company based in the Netherlands that creates smartphones designed to have a low impact on the environment. And one of the ways Fairphone achieves this is by supporting its products for longer periods.

The company announced a new model which will be going on sale this month in the UK and select European markets, and it’s promising unprecedented levels of firmware support. Well, unprecedented for other Android smartphone companies, at least.

New Fairphone 4 guarantees firmware support until 2025, aims for 2027

The Fairphone 4 ships with Android 11 and benefits from a 5-year warranty, claims the official product page. And according to a statement cited by ArsTechnica, the company will update the Fairphone 4 with new Android OS updates until the end of 2025. Not only that, but Fairphone aims to extend this period even further until the end of 2027.

This might sound impossible to achieve because the Fairphone 4 uses a Qualcomm chipset, and the chipmaker itself doesn’t offer support for this many years. However, Fairphone already did something similar with the Fairphone 2.

The latter is a 5-year-old phone that got updated to Android 9 earlier this year despite the fact that Qualcomm is no longer supporting the Snapdragon 801 SoC or the products that still use it. But Fairphone spent its resources where it thought it mattered and developed the firmware update on its own with the modding community– without Qualcomm’s support whatsoever. Fairphone is now looking to do something similar with its latest smartphone model.

The caveat, because of course, there’s one

Although Fairphone promises unprecedented support for its phone, the problem is that the company doesn’t have nearly the same resources Samsung or other major Android smartphone makers. And because of this, Fairphone tends to release new Android OS updates fairly late. The Fairphone 2 is half a decade old and was updated this year, but the OS version it received was already late to the party. In fact, had Fairphone moved quicker, perhaps it could’ve benefitted from Qualcomm’s support for Android 9 a couple of years ago.

Anyway, the company guarantees to provide firmware updates for the Fairphone 4 until 2025, at least, but only up to Android 13. The company aims to extend the support period until 2027 just so it can upgrade the phone to Android 14 and 15. But by that time, Google will have Android 18 ready for launch — assuming that the search engine giant will continue providing yearly OS upgrades.

In other words, Fairphone has a steeper hill to climb, and although it offers more years of firmware support than even Samsung, its development cycle takes a lot longer. It’s a smaller company, so it doesn’t benefit from the same level of support as, say, Samsung. But despite these hurdles, the company wants to prove once again that Android smartphones could benefit from support for many more years if only part manufacturers and OEMs would want that.

Samsung, as some of you know, recently revised its firmware update policy for select smartphone lineups. It now promises to support high-end and a few mid-range devices with three major Android OS updates, which is better than what other major Android OEMs are offering. However, the Korean tech giant could still learn a thing or two from smaller companies like Fairphone, if it wants customers to regard it as the paragon of eco-consciousness in the mobile world.

iPhone 13 Pro bill of materials is nearly $70 higher than Galaxy S21+’s

The Apple iPhone 13 Pro — which is the biggest rival to Samsung’s Galaxy S21 — was recently disassembled by TechInsights, who estimated that the bill of materials for the iPhone 13 Pro costs an estimated $570. This makes it more expensive to manufacture than the Galaxy S21+, though both phones are available for purchase unlocked at a similar price of $999.

According to the same source, the bill of materials for the Galaxy S21+ is around $508. The iPhone 13 Pro is seemingly more expensive to produce, at least as far as the cost of parts is concerned. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the bill of materials doesn’t include any R&D and shipping costs or other expenses. The estimate simply adds the cost of individual parts, which reaches a total of $570 in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro.

Apple’s bill of materials is higher this year

Of note is that the iPhone 13 Pro costs more to produce than the Galaxy S21+ and the iPhone 12 Pro. The model that Apple released last year has an estimated bill of materials worth $548.50.

This indicates that, unlike Samsung, Apple has been spending more on iPhone parts over the past year. In contrast, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was estimated to be cheaper to manufacture than the Galaxy S20 Ultra by about 12%-13%, and thankfully, the 2021 flagship was also cheaper at launch by $200.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 get the best discount yet for US buyers

There are a few reasons why Samsung has sold millions of its new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldables. The price is one of them. These are the cheapest foldable smartphones yet from Samsung.

Customers are particularly liking the $999 starting price tag of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. If you been waiting to save a bit more money in the process, you wouldn’t want to miss this chance. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 are available with the best discount yet for buyers in the United States.

Samsung’s best foldables available at the best discount

Amazon has shaved off a whopping $200 from the price tag of its greatest foldable. If you hurry, you can pick up the Galaxy Z Fold 3 from Amazon US for $1,599 instead of $1,799. The discount is available for both the 256GB and 512GB variants of the device.

The discount is a bit more conservative for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 but it’s still going to save you a decent bit of money. Amazon has discounted the Galaxy Z Flip 3 by $75. So you can get one now for $924 instead of $999. The price cut is applicable to both the 128GB and 256GB options.

It goes without saying that these are among the best Samsung phones in 2021. There are no foldable smartphones quite like the company’s 2021 Galaxy Z series.

At these lower prices, they are more enticing for customers who have been waiting to own one. The price cut is for the US unlocked variants that are being sold directly by Amazon on its marketplace.

It’s difficult to say when these price cuts will be reversed. So if you really like the new foldables at these prices, don’t waste time in picking one up.

85-inch The Frame and 65-inch The Serif are now available in France

Samsung expanded its lifestyle TV range with a couple of new models released earlier this summer. The company launched an 85-inch version of The Frame and a 65-inch The Serif in July, but these new models were available only in South Korea. Now, Samsung announced that the 85-inch The Frame and 65-inch The Serif are coming to Europe, or more specifically, France.

Of course, The Frame (2021) was already available in France in a handful of different dimensions ranging from 43 to 75 inches. The new 85-inch addition is obviously the largest and was added to the lineup to meet the growing user demand for large-screen TVs.

Larger canvases for the Art Store

Similarly, the 65-inch The Serif joins the existing lineup consisting of 43, 50, and 55-inch models. The new 65-inch The Serif is now available for €1,999. The Frame is not yet available for purchase online at Samsung, but partner retailers in France appear to be selling it already.

The Frame and The Serif are “lifestyle TVs,” meaning they were designed to blend in with the environment. They achieve this through a unique exterior design as well as the Art Store, the latter of which hosts thousands of artworks and photos available for download. Recently, the Art Store was updated with photos and artworks from the Louvre Museum, and the gallery continues to grow.

Amazingly, Galaxy A8 (2018) gets third montly security update in a row

Samsung surprised us last month when it released the September 2021 security patch for the Galaxy A8 (2018) just weeks after the August update went live, but lo and behold, the monthly hot streak continues. Samsung is now rolling out the October 2021 security patch for the Galaxy A8 (2018), which means that the smartphone has essentially been following a monthly security patch update schedule for the past three months.

Keep in mind that, years after its original release, the Galaxy A8 (2018) is supposed to be following a quarterly security patch schedule at best and biannually at worst, depending on whether it’s an enterprise model or isn’t.

But for whatever reason, the Galaxy A8 has been enjoying this special treatment from Samsung for the past few months. It could speak of vulnerabilities that affect the Galaxy A8 (2018) to a higher degree than they do other devices from its era, or it could be a coincidence.

How long can Samsung keep this up?

Whatever the reasons might be for these unexpected security patch releases for the Galaxy A8 (2018), they’re welcome, but it will be interesting to see how long Samsung will be able to keep this up. There’s no way to be sure, but feel free to leave a comment if you believe that the Galaxy A8 (2018) will receive the November 2021 security patch. What would be the odds of that happening?!

Back to the new October update for the Galaxy A8 (2018), it carries firmware version A530FXXSLCUJ1 and it’s presently rolling out in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Galaxy A8 (2018) users there should receive an update notification if they haven’t already, or they can try triggering the update from the Settings app — more specifically, the Software update menu.

As usual, SamMobile readers can also download official Samsung firmware files from our firmware database and install the updates manually on their phones using a PC.

Samsung’s bringing affordable 90Hz to the Netherlands with Galaxy M22

The Galaxy M22 debuted in Germany last month, and of course, Samsung will eventually release its new low-cost phone to neighboring European countries. In fact, the company announced over the weekend that the Galaxy M22 is coming to the Netherlands this month for the suggested retail price of €239.

More specifically, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy M22 will be available in the Netherlands from mid-October. There’s no exact date attached to the official announcement, but the phone should hit the shelves in the next couple of weeks at most.

“A device that excels at an accessible price”

This is one way to describe the new Galaxy M22, according to Gerben van Walt Meijer, Marketing Manager at Samsung Netherlands.

At €239, the Galaxy M22 is one of the most affordable smartphones on the market to feature a high refresh rate display. The M22 is equipped with a 6.4-inch HD+ AMOLED panel with a high refresh rate of 90Hz.

It’s powered by the Mediatek Helio G80 chipset, a 5,000mAh battery with 25W charging capabilities (25W wall charger sold separately), and has 4GB of RAM along with 128GB of built-in expandable storage.

And although Samsung removed the 3.5mm audio port from the costlier Galaxy M52 5G released last month, the Galaxy M22 retains this basic feature. Seeing how Samsung’s moving further away from the 3.5mm port every year, the unannounced / unofficial Galaxy M23 sequel might do away with it, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Galaxy M22 is as fresh as it can be, and it’s a fairly complete package for the price.

Samsung Voice Recorder update brings lockscreen widget, multi-column UI

Samsung has consistently improved its stock Android apps with the introduction of newer designs and more features. The latest app from the company to get updated is Voice Recorder. The South Korean firm has added one important feature that helps you start the app faster, and the improved design fares well on devices with big screens.

The new update with version 21.3.30.23 is now available via the Galaxy Store and the Google Play Store. It introduces a lock screen widget for the Voice Recorder app, which means that you can activate it from the Settings menu and start recording voice directly from the lock screen for faster and easier access. The new widget is only available on devices running Android 11 (or newer).

The update also introduces a multi-column UI for devices with bigger screens such as foldables and tablets. The newer UI design takes full advantage of devices with a big screen.

It is a feature-rich app that allows recording voice in high-resolution and stereo mode. It also supports background voice recording, the ability to automatically reject incoming calls while recording voice, and the ability to bookmark points. You can change play speed, skip muted parts of a voice recording, and repeat playback.

How to clear Android cache and why you need to do it

Clear cache Android might sound like foreign words to someone who doesn’t know a lot about phones. They might just be aware that their device was made by Samsung or some other Android OEM. Naturally, they wouldn’t know how to clear Android cache and indeed why they should do it in the first place.

This is a great tip to know if you use an Android phone or tablet. It allows you to free up space and even fix some performance issues that cached files can sometimes cause. Before we dive into how you can clear cache on Android phones, it’s important to first know what is cache and why it exists.

What is Android cache?

The apps on your devices temporarily download files either when you launch them for the first time or continue using them. These files may include images, scripts, videos and other multimedia.

It’s not just apps. Websites also store a lot of cached data on your device. This is done to improve performance and reduce load times. Since the temporary files are already stored on the device, the app or webpage can load and perform faster.

For example, a website will store visual elements in the cache so that they don’t need to be downloaded every time you revisit the website. It helps save both time and data.

There are two caches on your Android phone that you need to clear. The app cache is where all of the temporary files required by apps are stored. The Chrome cache is where websites store their files.

Chrome is the default web browser on Android devices so we’re using that as the browser cache here. Other browsers will have their own cache.

Why you need to clear cache on Android

Now you might be wondering why do I need to learn how to clear cache on Android. You’ll be surprised to know that these temporary files can take up gigabytes of storage on your device. If you’re using one of Samsung’s latest devices that don’t have a microSD slot, you’ll be well aware of just how precious those extra gigs of storage can be.

Mid-range or entry-level devices that aren’t super-fast to begin with can really get bogged down once the cache fills up. Clearing the cache can help speed them up a bit. It also frees up valuable storage space. It also happens that sometimes apps and websites can act up. Clearing the cache can address those issues as well.

It’s not something that you need to do on a daily basis. Once every few months will be fine. It’ just best to keep an eye on the cache storage. Once it starts taking up a bit too much, or it feels that the device is being bogged down, go ahead and clear it.

How to clear app cache on Android

Step 1: To clear app cache, long press on the app icon and tap on the icon in the upper right-hand corner. Scroll down and tap on Storage. The next screen will show you exactly how much storage the app cache is taking up.

On non-Samsung phones, you can also access the app list through the Settings menu.

Step 2: Tap Clear cache in the lower right-hand corner to immediately delete all of the temporary files stored by the app.

How to clear Chrome cache on Android

Step 1: Tap on the three-dot icon in the upper right-hand corner followed by History.

Step 2: In the History section, tap on Clear browsing data… at the very top.

Step 3: Chrome gives you an option to select the time range. Open the dropdown menu and choose the desired range. Selecting All time will clear the entire cache.

Step 4: Make sure that the Cached images and files option is selected. You can choose to select the Browsing history and Cookies and site data options as well if you want to delete them too. Otherwise, simply uncheck them.

Step 5: Press the Clear data button in the lower right-hand corner to clear the browser’s cache.

Does clearing the Android cache delete your data?

The cache is where temporary files are stored. It has nothing to do with your data. For example, if you clear the cache for Facebook, it won’t delete your account or any of your posts, comments, photos, etc.

All of the data stored on your device remains untouched. So once you clear Android cache on your phone, all of the contacts are still going to be there. Your photos and videos will be just fine in the gallery. Your music won’t be gone and none of your apps will disappear.

It’s perfectly safe to clear cache on an Android phone or tablet. The temporary files are deleted permanently but that doesn’t affect the functionality of your apps or the browser. The cache will slowly rebuild over time.

Just think of clearing the cache as deep cleaning. Do it once in a while to keep everything in tip-top shape. Your phone will thank you.

WhatsApp Web: A simple guide on how to use the web app

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular cross-platform messaging app. As of February 2020, it has more than 2 billion users across the globe. A large number of users access the service through WhatsApp Web. It’s a web-based client that provides you with more flexibility on how you use this messaging app.

The Facebook-owned app is available on major platforms. It acts as a bridge for users on different platforms, enabling them to chat, send files make voice and video calls for free. They can also use WhatsApp Web online. It enables them to access their conversations through a web browser.

WhatsApp was originally available for mobile devices only. The company launched WhatsApp Web in January 2015. The web client is simply an extension of the user’s phone. WhatsApp Web only mirrors the conversations and messages that they receive from their mobile device. None of the messages are actually transferred over to the computer. In the interest of security, everything still lives on the user’s phone.

A simple guide on how to use WhatsApp Web

The WhatsApp Web app requires authentication through a personal QR code. Users can find this QR code inside the WhatsApp app on their phone. Since the web interface is basically just mirroring the app, the handset must remain connected to the internet for WhatsApp Web to function. If your smartphone loses the internet connection, WhatsApp Web will no longer work until the connection resumes.

To get the QR code, you’ll need to visit web.whatsapp.com. The code will be generated automatically when the page finishes loading. Once it appears, the code needs to be scanned through the WhatsApp app on your phone for the connection to be established.

You can do that by launching the app on your phone and tapping on the three dot menu in the top right hand corner. Tap on WhatsApp Web from the dropdown list followed by Link A Device. Simply point your phone’s camera at the WhatsApp Web QR code to launch the web app.

All of your conversations will now be immediately available in the browser. Communications remain end-to-end encrypted even when using WhatsApp Web online. The recipient never knows if you’re using WhatsApp Web or the mobile app.

Benefits of using the WhatsApp Web app

Once you’ve scanned the WhatsApp Web QR code and opened up the web app, you no longer need to use the phone to send messages and files. This makes it very easy to keep on top of your conversations from your computer. There’s no need to switch between the PC and the phone every time a new message comes in. You can read and reply to them from the web browser.

The biggest benefit of WhatsApp Web is that you can use your PC’s keyboard to type out messages. This means that you can type considerably faster than you would on your phone’s keyboard. It makes typing lengthy formal messages very easy.

Need to quickly share files from your computer? Through WhatsApp Web, you can easily send contacts, photos, documents and other files. Select as many as you want and send them on their way. If you receive a lot of files through WhatsApp, keep in mind that the web app won’t automatically save them on your computer. You will need to manually download the incoming files on the computer. WhatsApp on the phone will save incoming media automatically if the relevant option is enabled.

WhatsApp Web doesn’t let you make voice and video calls to individual contacts like the mobile app does. However, it’s possible to make group video calls on the web version through the Messenger Rooms feature. Once you create a room, simply share the link with the people you want to invite to the group video chat.

They’ll be able to join even if they don’t have WhatsApp or Messenger. It also doesn’t require you or the participants to log into Facebook. It’s pertinent to note that Messenger Rooms aren’t end-to-end encrypted.

So if you’re already using WhatsApp on your Samsung Android device but are yet to try the WhatsApp Web app, scan the WhatsApp Web QR today and unlock a powerful way to interact with your preferred messaging service.
