Nougat Tip: Use ‘beauty mode’ in the rear camera on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Do you ever rue the fact that you can make your face look shinier and blemish-free when taking selfies on your phone, but can’t do the same when taking pictures from the rear camera? If you have upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat on your Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, that should no longer be a concern, as the upgraded camera app allows you to change skin tone in both front and rear camera modes.

You can find the skin tone option on the right side of the screen (near the shutter button), and it works just as well with the rear camera as it does with the front-facing camera (although it might not fare so well if the subject is standing too far away). It seems to work with videos as well, but the difference is negligible based on our testing. Unfortunately, other “beauty mode” controls like slim face and large eyes continue to be exclusive to the selfie camera, but maybe that will change with the next major version of Android?

Wondering what else is new in Samsung’s version of Nougat? Check out other Nougat tips and a list of all the major new features (click here to watch a small video if you don’t want to read), and let us know if you have discovered something we haven’t noticed!

Apple edged past Samsung in the global smartphone market during Q4 2016

Apple edged past Samsung during the fourth quarter of 2016 in the global smartphone market. According to a report from Strategy Analytics, Apple captured a market share of 17.8 percent, while Samsung captured 17.7 percent share of the market. Chinese smartphone vendors Huawei (10.2%), Oppo (6.7%), and Vivo (5.8%) stood third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Samsung shipped 77.5 million smartphones worldwide during Q4 2016, which is a dip of 5 percent annually from 81.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2015. This dip was mostly due to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, and Apple took advantage of the situation pretty well. It sold 78.3 million iPhones worldwide, edging past Samsung. Despite a 3 percent rise in global smartphone shipments, Samsung and Apple collectively shipped 26.4 million fewer units.

Samsung sold 309.4 million smartphones in 2016, capturing a 20.8 percent market share for the full year. This is the South Korean smartphone giant’s lowest market share since 2011. The company will now be banking on the upcoming Galaxy S8 for a rebound. Apple had a market share of 14.5 percent in 2016, thanks to impressive iPhone 7 sales.

Samsung schedules its MWC 2017 event for February 26, could unveil the Galaxy Tab S3

Samsung has just sent out a press invite for its MWC 2017 event. However, unlike the past few years, it won’t unveil its flagship smartphone at this year’s Mobile World Congress. Instead, it will likely unveil a brand new tablet, the Galaxy Tab S3, during its press conference. The press conference will be live streamed on Samsung’s website.

The press invite image for Samsung’s MWC 2017 event teases a tablet with a front-facing fingerprint sensor. We expect it to be the Galaxy Tab S3. The event starts at 19:00 CET on February 26 at Palau de Congressos de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. We’ll be there covering the press conference to bring you the latest updates.

The Galaxy Tab S3 is expected to feature a 9.7-inch QXGA Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, a 12-megapixel primary camera, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, and a 5.6mm thin metal body. As per the latest reports, the device will most likely run Android 7.0 and will be available in cellular as well as Wi-Fi only variants.

January security patch now arriving on the Galaxy S5 in Europe

The factory unlocked variant of the Galaxy S5 is the latest smartphone in Samsung’s lineup to receive this month’s security patch in Europe. The upgrade, which weighs in at approximately 30MB and transports a flurry of fixes for bugs present in the Android operating system and the firm’s budget-friendly, flagship and former flagship devices, started making its way to the handset earlier today.

It should come as no surprise to hear that the upgrade is making the rounds in stages. To see if it’s ready for your unit, simply head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can always wait until you receive a notification prompting you to install the update, but you’ll need to have at least 50% of battery to initiate the installation process.

Samsung might be preparing to launch a variant of the Galaxy S8 with 6GB of RAM

Over the course of the past few weeks, the rumor mill has been spinning at warp speed with regards to what Samsung has in store for its next-generation flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8. We’ve already heard that the handset is destined to sport a Snapdragon 835 CPU, but a reliable tipster is now claiming that it’ll also be available in two storage sizes — 64GB and 128GB — with varying amounts of RAM — 4GB and 6GB, respectively — when it launches in China and South Korea.

Prior to this revelation, speculation hinted towards a variant of the Galaxy S8 launching with 256GB of internal storage on board and a colossal 8GB of RAM. The tipster, who operates under the handle @mmddj_china on Twitter, has reportedly heard from their sources that this won’t be the case and that the only variant that’ll be released in Europe, North America and South America will be the 4GB/64GB version — so it looks like those hoping for a high-capacity model in the regions are out of luck.

It would be wrong if we didn’t point out, however, that this information is far from confirmed, which means that it should be taken with a considerable pinch of salt until Samsung finally takes the wraps of the Galaxy S8 and its larger sibling, the Galaxy S8 Plus. Word on the street is that the firm’s planning to do so at a dedicated event on Wednesday, March 29, with a worldwide release penciled in for mid-April, though that could easily change if production doesn’t go according to plan.

Nougat Tip: Enable ‘tap to take selfies’ on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge

In Android 6.0, the front camera on Samsung devices would allow you to take selfies by tapping anywhere on the screen instead of reaching for the shutter button or the volume keys. If you have upgraded to Nougat on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge recently (especially if you wiped your phone clean after the upgrade), you might have noticed that this feature no longer works. Don’t worry – it’s not a bug, and the feature has simply been turned off.

To be able to take pictures by tapping on the screen, open the camera app, then click the gear icon to go into the camera settings. Here, under the Front Camera section, tap Ways to take pictures. Here, enable the Tap to take pictures option. You should now be able to use the entire screen as the shutter button when you’re taking selfies. With Nougat, this feature is in your hands, so you can choose to turn it off if you so desire.

Verizon releases January security update for the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S5

Samsung has gradually been rolling out the January security maintenance update to compatible handsets over the past few weeks directly and through its carrier partners. Verizon is now following through by releasing said security patch for the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S5. Just yesterday, Sprint released the same patch for the Galaxy S5 on its network as well.

The January security patch comes in at just under 30MB and brings fixes for 67 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in Android OS as well as 28 security patches that are exclusive to Galaxy handsets. The idea behind these monthly security updates is to ensure that these Android-powered devices offer users the best possible software security at all times.

Verizon is now rolling out software version MMB29M.N910VVRS2CQA1, MMB29M.N915VVRS2CQA1 and MMB29M.G900VVRS2DQA1 for the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S5 respectively. These updates are being sent out over-the-air so they should go live for all Verizon users across the United States in the very near future.

Galaxy Tab S3 specs and price revealed in new report

A new report out of Korea today “confirms” that the Galaxy Tab S3 is going to be unveiled by Samsung at the Mobile World Congress 2017 late next month. The report also shares the specs and price of Samsung’s upcoming flagship Android tablet. This tablet is the successor to the Galaxy Tab S2 that Samsung first released in Korea back in August 2015. It’s likely going to be the only flagship product from Samsung at MWC 2017 given that it has already confirmed that the Galaxy S8 won’t be launched at this event.

According to the report, the 9.6-inch Galaxy Tab S3 features a 2048×1536 pixel resolution display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood coupled with 4GB of RAM. It’s said to be available in both LTE and Wi-Fi only models with a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. Android 7.0 Nougat will come pre-installed. The Galaxy Tab S3 is also said to be thinner than its predecessor.

Samsung is reportedly going to release the Galaxy Tab S3 in South Korea at some point in March, prices are said to start at around 700,000 won ($600).

Report suggests that the Galaxy S8 could sport a 3,250mAh battery

If a new report originating from South Korea is anything to go by, it would appear that Samsung has provided its battery suppliers with an updated production roadmap, which includes 3,250mAh and 3,750mAh cells; leading many to believe that they’re the respective batteries that’ll power the much-anticipated Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.

While there’s nothing in the way of evidence to support this claim, we’re not going to rule it out entirely as it certainly seems feasible. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge sport 3,000mAh and 3,600mAh cells, so it’s only to be expected that Samsung will grace their successors with an incremental capacity upgrade.

As usual, only time will tell. Fortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait too much longer to find out more, though. Samsung’s expected to take the wraps off the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus at a dedicated event on March 29, with a worldwide release expected to follow in mid-April.

Nougat Launcher app for Samsung Z1, Z2, and Z3 lands at Tizen Store

Tizen is, compared to the likes of Android, a “baby” OS, and it’s not surprising to see that some Tizen users have more than just a little respect and admiration for Tizen’s more massive mobile “cousin.” Google has released Nougat for the Pixel and Pixel XL as well as its current Nexus devices, and Samsung has started pushing out Google’s latest sweet treat to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge for China, UK, France, Malaysia, South Korea, UAE, and Russia. Even now, though, Tizen users won’t get to enjoy Nougat on their handsets.

Well, maybe that’s fudging the truth just a bit.

A new app has arrived in the Tizen Store called “Nougat Launcher app” that is designed to bring a little (note the words “a little”) Nougat design to your Samsung Z1, Z2, or Z3 handset. The Nougat Launcher app brings a Googlicious theme that looks reminiscent of a few Marshmallow themes you may have seen in Samsung’s Theme Store on an Android-powered handset, but, aside from the basic look, the icon design is still reminiscent of Tizen.

Android appreciators will find the multi-colored “G” at the top left of the main screen, reminiscent of the new Pixel Launcher for Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL, to be a welcome addition, letting you search for your installed apps. And yes, there are some bugs you will encounter, some things you can’t do as you would on an Android device (such as close recent apps).

Finally, the app is a launcher app, meaning that the look on your main screen will only stay provided that the app remains open. Close the app and your home screen will reflect the look you set for it. Hopefully, Tizen app developers will create more app launchers and perhaps even, a home launcher at some point, to bring even more Android love to the platform.

You can download the Nougat Launcher app over at the Tizen Store, but, in the meantime, take a look at the app screenshots below and let us know if you’d like to see developer support continue for this (or see the creation of more launcher apps).

Samsung to launch new wireless noise cancelling headphones alongside the Galaxy S8

Samsung often launches new accessories with its flagship smartphones and it’s likely to do that in March when it unveils the Galaxy S8. According to a new report, the company is going to launch the new Samsung Level In ANC wireless headphones with Active Noise Cancelling feature alongside the Galaxy S8.

The company already launched a wired version of its in-ear Level In ANC headphones last year. Samsung claims they can reduce ambient noise by up to 20db for a more immersive listening experience. They also have a new feature called “Talk-in Mode” which enables users to hear outside sound so that they’re able to hear when someone calls their name.

According to the report, the new Samsung Level In ANC wireless headphones with Active Noise Cancelling feature are going to be launched alongside the Galaxy S8 and will cost 130 euro. They will reportedly come in red, green, black and silver colors. Samsung is due to launch the Galaxy S8 in March. Recent reports suggest that it’s going to conduct the launch event for its next-generation flagship smartphone on March 29.

[Poll] Where should Samsung put the fingerprint sensor?

Following rumors that Samsung was going to ditch the physical home button for the Galaxy S8 we got what might possibly be our first glimpse at the next flagship last week. If everything it revealed is true then the Galaxy S8′s fingerprint sensor will be placed alongside the rear camera. Having a fingerprint sensor on the back presents its own challenges to users because they can’t exactly get any use out of it if the device is lying on a flat surface.

So we’ve got to ask you, where do you think Samsung should put the fingerprint sensor? Vote below and let us know what you think about this in the comments below.

Samsung may soon fall to second place in the flash memory segment

Samsung is currently the world leader in the flash memory market with a share of 36.6 percent, but its position might soon be in danger. Toshiba, the second-largest flash memory maker in the world with a market share of 19.8 percent, has announced that it will spin off its core memory business and sell a 20 percent stake to Western Digital.

Western Digital currently has a market share of 17.7 percent, but if it joins hands with Toshiba, their combined share of the flash memory market will exceed that of Samsung’s. Toshiba is looking to complete the sale by March 31, but there’s a possibility of the deal being denied by the anti-trust regulatory. Other possible investors include SK Hynix, Development Bank of Japan, and some other private equity firms.

Samsung launches the Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) in Brazil

According to TelecomPaper, Samsung has today launched the long-rumored Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) in Brazil. The handsets, which are expected to be available to purchase from the firm’s online store sometime over the course of the next couple of weeks, are reportedly priced at BRL 2,100 ($668) and BRL 2,300 ($732), respectively, in the region.

Just in case you missed its announcement, the Galaxy A5 (2017) is a capable mid-to-high-end device, which sports a 5.2-inch Full HD display, a 1.9GHz Exynos 7880 Octa CPU, a Mali-T830MP3 GPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable internal storage, a 16MP front- and rear-facing camera and a 3,000mAh non-removable battery. Both in terms of design and internals, the Galaxy A7 (2017) is almost identical to the Galaxy A5 (2017). It packs the same processor, GPU, RAM module and camera unit. Unofficial Galaxy S8 render hints at what the design might look like

We recently saw the first leaked live photo of the Galaxy S8 and it more or less confirmed some of the things we’ve been hearing about this handset. For example, it confirmed that the physical home button is being ditched and the fingerprint scanner is being moved to the back. It also confirmed that the handset will have an amazing display-to-body ratio.

Since that leaked picture was a bit blurry, this unofficial render of the Galaxy S8 is going to give you a better idea of what the Galaxy S8 might look like. This render is based on the current rumors and reports about the Galaxy S8 so it’s not the real deal but works well as a reference point.

The render shows us that the Galaxy S8 might have a dedicated hardware button for the Bixby artificial intelligence assistant, the edge-to-edge curved “Infinity” display and a fingerprint scanner on the back. What do you think about how the Galaxy S8 is shaping up to be so far?

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 on March 29 and release it by mid-April.

Samsung heir Lee might face arrest once again

Samsung Electronics vice chairman and heir apparent Lee Jae-yong dodged arrested two weeks ago when the Seoul Central District Court rejected an arrest warrant request put forward by the special prosecutor’s office that’s looking into allegations of embezzlement and bribery against Samsung in connection with South Korea’s influence-peddling scandal. Samsung allegedly paid more than $35 million in bribes to organizations and foundations run by Choi Soon-sil, a close personal friend of President Park Geun-hye, to gain influence.

According to a new report out of Korea on Sunday, the independent investigation team that’s looking into this corruption scandal is likely to seek an arrest warrant once again for Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong. The team is reportedly considering to try and get an arrest warrant for the Samsung heir once it’s done with the face-to-face investigation of the president by early next month.

The court denied the first warrant request because it didn’t consider Lee to be a flight risk and saw no need to detain him even though the investigation still continues. Whether the prosecutors will be able to make a stronger case for arrest the second time around remains to be seen.

Hey Samsung, where is the women-friendly version of the Gear S3?

My boyfriend couldn’t resist buying the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. Having worn the Gear S3 classic for a month or so, he decided to keep switching between the frontier and classic variants. I don’t blame him, because both variants of the Gear S3 have a stunning design, at least as far as men are concerned. They look great, but in my opinion, neither variant is geared (no pun) towards women.

I’m still happy with the Rose Gold Gear S2, and I’m also a fan of the new features on the Gear S3. The Always On Display, improved battery life and built-in speaker are major advantages compared to the Gear S2, but why isn’t Samsung thinking of female consumers? Why isn’t there a smaller version of the Gear S3, one with the new design but the size of the Gear S2?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Samsung is working on such a version of its newest smartwatch, and it would be great to see an announcement in the coming months. What do you think? Do you agree that the Gear S3 needs a variant for Samsung’s lady consumers?

Black Sapphire and Crimson Red color options for the Galaxy S8 would add more color splashes to the Galaxy

Samsung’s “Galaxy” is expanding, as can be seen by the sheer number of devices Samsung manufactures annually, the cross-platform compatibility of its devices with other platforms such as iOS and Windows Mobile, as well as the birth of Samsung’s very own Tizen OS. And, with each new high-end “Galaxy,” Samsung is known for bringing new color options.

With the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in 2015, Samsung brought quite a few new color options to the “Galaxy,” such as Gold Platinum and Black Sapphire, along with Blue Topaz and Green Emerald (released in May). Later that year, Samsung released the Galaxy Note 5 with exclusive colors Silver Titanium and Pink Gold for Korean customers. With the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung introduced its Silver Titanium color option for the worldwide customer base, no longer restricting it to just Korean customers. The Galaxy Note 7 brought the sexy Blue Coral color option that has now made its way to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

And, with the Galaxy S8, new color options are expected. As for me, I’d like to see a new color option arrive and a retro color option return.

First, let’s start with the retro color option. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge arrived in 2015 with a Black Sapphire color option that would turn black or blue based upon the angle in a lit room or even in sunlight. It is a color that was carried over to the Galaxy Note 5 but eliminated with the announcement of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge nearly a year ago now in favor of Black Onyx.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Black Onyx is a lovely color. It is a solid black color, and some buyers like the color enough that they don’t mind buying another phone that bears a black color. But, in my view, when compared to the former Black Sapphire color, Black Onyx is standard, expected, somewhat dull. I mean, how many phones have we seen in the “Galaxy” that arrive in a typical Black color?

And Black Onyx is a good color with a name of confidence, but it’s standard.

Black Sapphire was an unexpected color because it would change color in light. That’s what made it pleasant to look at. That is missing with the Black Onyx color option, even if some deem solid colors better than mixed ones. I do like solid colors such as Green Emerald as well, by the way, so I’m not biased against solid colors (it’s just that I really like the Black Sapphire color option better than the solid Black option that I’ve seen on smartphones with every new announcement). I’d also like the return of the Green Emerald option too.

It’s time for a sexy, Crimson Red color option

Well, apart from the return of the Black Sapphire color option, I’d like to see a new option arrive alongside of the Blue Coral color option for the Galaxy S8 from the announcement: that is, the arrival of a Crimson Red Galaxy S8 color option. And by “red,” I’m not referring to the Limited Edition Iron Man Galaxy S6 edge shade that shows off a dark red hue nor the Merlot Red color option for the Galaxy Note 3, the AT&T-exclusive Red Aurora Galaxy S4. The red Christmas Edition of the Galaxy Note 4 is as close as it comes in Samsung’s “Galaxy” to the red I’m looking for, though it’s still too dark.

Here’s a chart to show my preferred color, Crimson Red, in relation to other red shades.

red colors galaxy s8 crimson red

Credit: Digital Synopsis

I want a brighter shade of red that isn’t a dark color but a bright color, a Crimson Red color option for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. And, in the same fashion as the Blue Coral Galaxy Note 7, I’d like to see the Crimson Red Galaxy S8 also feature a gold trim with the words “Galaxy S8 Plus” (yes, I’m ready for the 6-inch screen) written in Gold.

A return to the Black Sapphire and the arrival of a Crimson Red color option would give a little bridge to the past while building a new one for Samsung’s lineup. The color red has always been a headturner, and with Crimson Red, gold trim, and the dual-curved edges, the Galaxy S8 will be a phone that no buyer can deny.

01-27-2017 Firmware Updates: Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy A3, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.
