Samsung trademarks some Galaxy S11 camera features

Samsung’s hard at work on the Galaxy S11, as you would expect, and that includes trademarking a few camera features its next flagship will bring to the table. Samsung has received trademarks for Single take and Video spin, both of which are classified as “downloadable and recorded computer application software for creating, editing, and saving of photography and videos” on smartphone cameras.

The Single take feature was already revealed earlier this month as a new camera feature Samsung is developing – it was discovered in the code for the company’s Camera app. Single take will allow you to “capture the scene in a series of pictures and short videos”; the user will have to pan the phone around for 15 seconds, and the camera will create a series of pictures and videos that they can check out in the gallery. It’s not known what Video spin will do, and, if we’re being honest, the exact purpose of Single take isn’t entirely clear, either.

There’s no evidence that these features will debut on the Galaxy S11, but that is probably going to be the case as the features aren’t included in the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. However, once the Galaxy S11 goes official, we can expect them to make their way to the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 via software updates, just like Samsung ported over Galaxy Note 10 camera features to the Galaxy S10.

Samsung Galaxy Fold coming to Canada in early December

Early next month, the Galaxy Fold will go on sale in yet another country: Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Fold (LTE) will be available in Canada from December 6. The foldable device will only be available through Samsung Experience Stores in CF Sherway Gardens, CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Metropolis at Metrotown, West Edmonton Mall, and Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

The Canadian pricing for the Fold is $2,600 CAD, which translates to $1,980 USD, the same price the Fold commands in most other markets around the globe. It will be accompanied by the Galaxy Fold Premier Service, which gets customers a one-time screen replacement for $199 as long as the device is purchased before May 31, 2020. They will also get direct 24/7 access to Samsung experts who will give them tailored guidance and support over the phone (by dialing 1-888-970-FOLD).

Samsung notes that limited quantities of the Galaxy Fold will be available in Canada, and that means we can expect it to sell out quickly, as has been the case in most countries. Canada will get the Fold only in Cosmos Black, although Samsung could launch the Space Silver version in the country later down the line.

Will you be picking up the Galaxy Fold once it launches in Canada?

Galaxy A71 confirmed to have 4,500 mAh battery

It seems none of the 2020 Galaxy A series phones will bring battery capacity upgrades over their 2019 predecessors. The Galaxy A51 has been rumored to have a 4,000 mAh battery, the same as the Galaxy A50 and the Galaxy A50s. It has now been confirmed that the Galaxy A71 has a 4,500 mAh battery like the Galaxy A70 and Galaxy A70s, thanks to a photo of the phone’s battery published on South Korean certification portal Safety Korea.

A 4,500 mAh battery is plenty big enough for a mid-range phone, so it’s not something we will hold against the Galaxy A71. It helps when you also have fast charging – the Galaxy A70 was Samsung’s first commercial phone to come with 25W fast charging support, and the same can be expected on the Galaxy A71. 45W charging probably won’t make the cut and only be seen on the Galaxy A91, although Samsung is welcome to surprise us.

The battery capacity is not the only aspect of the Galaxy A70 that won’t be getting an upgrade with the A71. It will also have the same underlying chipset (a Snapdragon 675), RAM (6GB), storage (128GB) and display size (6.7 inches). However, as leaked CAD renders of the phone revealed yesterday, the A71’s 6.7-inch display will have a centered punch-hole for the front camera, like the Galaxy Note 10, and a fourth rear camera like the Galaxy A51.

There’s been no indication that the Galaxy A71 will launch soon. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy A51 later this year, alongside Lite variants of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, but the rest of its upcoming handsets are likely to stay under wraps until 2020.

Don’t act surprised, the Galaxy Fold 2 will have a minimalist cover display

Chances are that Samsung’s next foldable device will have a clamshell form factor. We’ve talked about this at length a few times, and judging by all of the information we’ve gathered so far, the clamshell Galaxy Fold 2, a.k.a. Bloom, will have a fairly small cover display with limited interactivity, meant primarily for notifications.

Obviously, the small cover display is also expected to show battery information while charging, and now, a couple of charging animations seemingly designed for the Fold 2’s exterior display have been discovered in the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 9 and shared by @MaxWinebach via Twitter.

The small cover display is a limitation of the form factor

The source claims that the videos have a much narrower aspect ratio in reality and that they should depict an animated circle as opposed to a rectangle with rounded corners. In any case, these are just a couple of simple animations and there are no new surprises here. The Galaxy Fold 2 should be a Moto Razr challenger and that’s just about it.

We’ve suspected as much even before the new foldable Razr was officially announced. We’ve talked at length about the Galaxy Fold 2’s battery setup, and how its small 900mAh secondary battery (part number EB-BF701ABY) should be the perfect fit for a clamshell’s minimalist cover display with limited functionality.

Do keep in mind that Samsung could also launch a direct sequel to the existing Galaxy Fold, one that would not have a clamshell design. That might happen later in the second half of 2020, at least assuming that the company will want to pursue a strategy of releasing two foldable devices every year.

Galaxy A71 unofficial CAD renders reveal potential exterior design

The Galaxy A71 has popped up in a series of high-resolution CAD renders said to be based on real specifications, offering a glimpse of what could be the phone’s final design. The renders were passed along by @OnLeaks via CashKaro and suggest that the Galaxy A71 will have an L-shaped camera setup, similar to the one rumored for the Galaxy A51.

Infinity-O display and L-shaped quad-camera setup

According to these renders, the Galaxy A71 will measure just about the same as the Galaxy A70 and A70s, clocking in at around 163.5 x 76 x 7.9mm without the rear camera bump. It will retain the 6.7-inch screen diagonal along with the 2.5D glass design. However, it could switch from the Infinity-V to an Infinity-O display akin to the Galaxy Note 10 series, whereby the camera cutout will be centered.

The Galaxy A71 could be another one of Samsung’s upcoming smartphones in the Galaxy A (2020) series to adopt an L-shaped camera design confined within a protruding rectangle. The Galaxy A51 could do the same, at least according to a recent leak. The Galaxy A71 will reportedly have three vertically-aligned rear cameras coupled with a fourth sensor and an LED flash.

Exact camera specifications are unknown but the Galaxy A70 and Galaxy A70s boast 32MP and 64MP primary sensors, respectively. In theory, Samsung could adopt the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX for the upcoming Galaxy A71 if it would want to maintain this trajectory and push things even further.

The Exynos 980 remains a strong contender for the Galaxy A71

We’ve exclusively reported a couple of weeks ago that a Galaxy A71 with 5G capabilities could also be released in China. However, both the LTE and 5G models will likely use the same Exynos 980 chipset. The device should come with a minimum of 128GB of storage and is likely to ship in black, silver, blue, and pink, meaning that the white color shown in the CAD renders at hand may have been selected merely for better visibility. In any case, because the Galaxy A71 is expected to run Android 10, it will most likely launch in 2020 after the Galaxy S11 series debuts with One UI 2.0 out of the box.

Any thoughts on the Galaxy A71 as depicted in these CAD renders? Are you looking forward to the 2020 Galaxy A lineup? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Galaxy S11’s 5x zoom camera may have optical image stabilization

If the Galaxy S11 rumors are anything to go by, it’s going to get some major improvements in the camera department. The Galaxy S11 is expected to be the first smartphone from Samsung to offer 5x optical zoom capability.

Samsung’s existing conventional 2x telephoto optical zoom lens has optical image stabilization or OIS. Naturally, many are wondering if the 5x telephoto solution expected for the Galaxy S11 will have it too. That’s because its telephoto solution will be fundamentally different from what’s being used currently.

OIS on Galaxy S11’s 5x zoom camera will be very useful

The company is expected to go with a periscope camera module for the Galaxy S11. To allow for 5x optical zoom on the device without the module protruding from the back, the sensor and lenses arranged sideways and the principle of reflecting light in a periscope is utilized. This method allows for a longer telephoto lens to sit flush with the body of a slim smartphone.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been making camera modules since 2003. It recently announced the mass production of a 5x optical zoom camera. What the company didn’t say at the time is whether it features OIS as well. Since this module hasn’t been used in a smartphone so far, that’s not something known to the public just yet. It may ostensibly be the module used for the Galaxy S11.

However, we have discovered a patent application that Samsung Electro-Mechanics filed this week with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. The patent is for a periscope camera module with optical image stabilization. It further emphasizes on handshake correction which is what OIS makes possible. It offers some detail about how the OIS module within the periscope camera would work to reduce motion blur.

Optical Image Stabilization becomes even more important at higher zoom levels. With OIS already being present on its conventional telephoto camera, it would make sense for Samsung to want it on its periscope telephoto camera as well. That’s also something for which customers will appreciate it a lot.

Granted, this is just a patent so it doesn’t confirm anything, but there’s an element of circumstantial evidence here. First, the patent is filed by the division that makes camera modules for Samsung. It was filed this week whereas most patent-based stories that you read about online are about patents that were filed many years ago. There’s also the timing. We’re only a few months away from the Galaxy S11’s launch.

With rumors like ‘Hubble’ being the codename of the Galaxy S11 camera, there are high expectations from the device in his department. So the possibility that this patent might be describing the Galaxy S11’s camera can’t be ruled out.

Is the Samsung SM-AN815F a Galaxy A81 with an S Pen?

We all know Samsung is making new phones in a lot of different segments. Devices like the Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note 10 Lite, Galaxy A51, and Galaxy A91 are in development, along with the Galaxy S11 and Galaxy Fold 2, but it seems the company is also creating a new segment altogether. A new Samsung device has been discovered, and its model number — SM-AN815F — makes it a pretty big head-scratcher.

To be precise, the letters ‘AN’ after ‘SM’ are what make this new device a mystery. Every Samsung phone or tablet’s model number starts with ‘SM’, but Samsung has always used a single letter after ‘SM’ to denote a particular lineup. For example, the Galaxy S series is SM-Gxxxx, the Note series is SM-Nxxxx, and the Galaxy A series is SM-Axxxx. There is no precedent for anything like the SM-AN815F, which makes it hard to speculate what the device could be.

Could it be a Galaxy A81 with an S Pen, with the N denoting the inclusion of a stylus? After all, the Galaxy A91 (SM-A915F) and Galaxy S10 Lite (SM-G770F) are expected to be the same device despite belonging to separate segments, so the SM-AN815F may well be the Galaxy Note 10 Lite that gets branded as the Galaxy A81 for some markets. It’s certainly a credible line of reasoning, as we don’t yet see any evidence that an SM-A815F, which would technically denote the Galaxy A81, exists.

But it’s also the only line of reasoning we can follow at this time. Our sources tell us the SM-AN815F has 128GB of storage and that no software is being developed for it, so we can only wait for more information to surface before we can begin to understand what Samsung is working on.

Samsung begins firmware development on Galaxy S11’s LTE models

Samsung has started developing software for the LTE variants of the Galaxy S11e and Galaxy S11, which sport model numbers SM-G980F and SM-G985F. The company started work on the software for all three Galaxy S11 models a month ago, but it kicked things off with the 5G variants, leading some to speculate that Samsung could be thinking of skipping LTE variants altogether. That is not the case, at least for the Galaxy S11e and Galaxy S11.

No sign of an LTE variant of the Galaxy S11+ yet

Samsung doesn’t seem to be working on software for the Galaxy S11+ yet, and that’s in line with a recent rumor that said the largest Galaxy S11 model will come with 5G support everywhere. But Samsung doesn’t always begin software development for every model of a flagship at the same time, so it’s possible an LTE-only Galaxy S11+ exists and will pop up on our radar in the future. If it doesn’t, well, we’re not sure anyone is going to complain, as having only a 5G Galaxy S11+ would make sense considering the price tags that are attached to the Korean giant’s flagship smartphones.

The Galaxy S11 will most likely be announced in the third week of February, and recently disclosed information and leaks hint at a slew of impressive upgrades. A 120 Hz display, high zooming capabilities and a 100MP+ primary camera, big batteries, big displays in a compact form factor, and more is expected, although with the official launch still a few months away, some of the rumors — which you can keep up with in our Galaxy S11 rumor roundup — could end up being more smoke than fire.

Trump wants to help Apple compete with Samsung

During his visit to Apple’s manufacturing facility in Austin yesterday, Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of tariff exemptions for Apple to negate Samsung’s cost advantage in the US. He expressed a similar sentiment in August this year after Tim Cook made a case that tariffs on imports from China will hamper Apple’s ability to compete with Samsung.

“The problem we have is you have Samsung. It’s a great company but it’s a competitor of Apple, and it’s not fair if, because we have a trade deal with Korea – we made a great trade deal with South Korea – but we have to treat Apple on a somewhat similar basis as we treat Samsung,” said Trump, according to media reports.

The crux of Apple’s argument is that most of its products sold in the US are manufactured in China, attracting tariffs levied by the Trump administration on Chinese imports, whereas Samsung doesn’t have to pay these tariffs on imports since its manufacturing bases are in Vietnam and India. The Trump administration has already offered certain exemptions on computer parts to help Apple build Mac Pro computers in Austin.

Ever since the US Government imposed tariffs on imports from China, Apple is forced to pay a 10% tariff on AirPods, Apple Watches, and other products that are manufactured in China. The Trump administration is planning to levy another round of tariffs on made in China products from next month, which will include, among other things, Apple’s iPhones as well. Analysts, however, are skeptical of the impact of these tariffs on Apple’s ability to compete with Samsung.

Being a South Korean company, Samsung was able to avoid the hostility that many Chinese brands are facing under the current regime in the US. So far, neither Trump nor anyone from his administration has attacked Samsung. The Korean company has also tried to appeal to Trump by investing in a manufacturing facility in the US after he came to power.

See the difference a 120Hz display would make on a Samsung phone!

The One UI 2.0 beta Samsung sent out for the Galaxy Note 9 yesterday revealed the interesting possibility that Samsung might finally bring 120Hz displays to its smartphones. The Galaxy S11 would be the obvious contender to become the first Samsung phone with a 120Hz display. There’s some circumstantial evidence to support this theory.

Enabling 120Hz mode on a Galaxy Note 9 running One UI 2.0 beta doesn’t accomplish anything because the display panel doesn’t support it. So we can’t see the benefits of that just yet. However, an animation for the option does provide a glimpse of the difference a 120Hz display would make.

Samsung may finally adopt 120Hz displays for its phones

For those who are unaware, 120Hz refers to the refresh rate of the display. A higher refresh rate means that the screen would be able to refresh content more dynamically. The difference for you would be smoother animations compared to a 60Hz panel. Gaming would also be a treat, particularly in fast-paced titles.

The animation, initially spotted by @MaxWinebach, gives a glimpse of just how much smoother the scrolling would appear on a 120Hz panel compared to a 60Hz panel. It’s evident even in the animation that’s running on a Galaxy Note 9, so it would look a lot better on a compatible display panel.

Samsung does make high refresh rate display panels that it supplies to other companies. It just doesn’t use them for its own devices. Hopefully, that’s going to change with the Galaxy S11. If you have a Galaxy Note 9 running the One UI 2.0 beta, you can check it out for yourself. The High refresh rate option isn’t listed in the Display section of the Settings app in the beta. It will only appear when you search for it manually.

Galaxy S11 5G certified in China with 25W fast charging

The Galaxy S11 will offer a number of new features, such as an upgraded camera and maybe even a 120 Hz display, but it will also come with features that already exist on other Galaxy devices. That includes support for 5G connectivity and 25W fast charging, both of which have now been confirmed thanks to a certification the Galaxy S11 5G (model number SM-G9860) has picked up in China. We already knew the Galaxy S11 would have 5G and 25W fast charging, but it is always good to see official confirmation.

The certification suggests Samsung will keep 45W fast charging exclusive to the Galaxy S11+ and only equip the regular Galaxy S11 and the Galaxy S11e with 25W charging. That’s not exactly a problem, however. 45W charging on the Galaxy Note 10+ isn’t a whole lot faster than 25W charging, and while the S11e and S11 could have considerably bigger batteries than their predecessors, 25W charging will be more than adequate to juice them up quickly, going by the charging times for the Note 10 and Note 10+.

Galaxy S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite, and A51 reportedly launching in December

A new report from the folks over at 91Mobiles says that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 Lite, the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, and the Galaxy A51 in India in December. The three devices fall in different segments and lineups so their launch will probably be a few weeks apart, but it seems a bit implausible that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Note 10 Lite next month as well.

We were the first to reveal that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, but not a lot of information has surfaced about the device in recent weeks. The Galaxy A51 and Galaxy S10 Lite, meanwhile, have picked up a couple of certifications that every smartphone requires before it can make its way to market, and rumors and leaks have also given us complete details on the A51 and S10 Lite spec sheets.

What we’re getting at here is that we can see the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy A51 going official in December but not the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, unless the Note 10 Lite is simply an S10 Lite with an S Pen. That is certainly possible, as even the Galaxy S10 Lite is rumored to be the Galaxy A91 with a different name. But there’s not enough information available right now to prove or disprove that theory.

Ultimately, we will just have to wait and see how Samsung will handle the launch of the three smartphones. The company doesn’t usually release too many devices in December, but with its renewed strategy of flooding the market with multiple phones, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the S10 Lite, Note 10 Lite, and A51 hit retail shelves next month.
