Samsung to unveil Tizen 3.0 in September

Samsung has made some big announcements at the ongoing Samsung Developer Conference. The company has mentioned that the next major refresh of the Tizen OS, dubbed Tizen 3.0, will formally arrive in September. Since IFA 2016 is also scheduled for September, we cannot rule out an announcement during the event. It is possible that the Gear S3 will be shown off with this new operating system.

The platform is 64-bit compatible now, so it will work with the new ARM and x86-based processors. Support for Vulkan APIs is present as well, which means Tizen will match Android in its graphical capabilities. It is further mentioned that Tizen can now support 4K resolution screens, which should make it ideal for Samsung’s new Smart TVs. Other features will include support for multiple users, voice control, and inbuilt virus and privacy protection.

Tizen has been predominantly used in the company’s wearables and televisions. While there have been a handful of phones running the platform, it hasn’t really been a success for Samsung despite sufficiently strong device sales in markets like India and Bangladesh. A beta version of Tizen 3.0 will be available in July, and we’re guessing both the Samsung Z1 and Z3 will get a preview version later this year.

Does the LG G5 AOD surpass the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge’s Always On Display? You’ve heard half the story

I’ve given my share of criticism about the LG G5 here at SamMobile. Some diehard Samsung fans won’t find this surprising, though others do. So, I decided to finally put aside what some see as an inherent bias toward Samsung and – you guessed it! – pick up the LG G5. This is where you gasp, take a deep breath, and wear a look of shock on your face in front of your phone or computer.

Well, I’ve spent a week with the device, and I can say that LG has done some good things in the G5. Unfortunately, though, the Always On Display isn’t one of them.

You’ve probably read in some review or heard in some YouTube review on the LG G5 that the G5’s Always On Display (AOD) has some advantage over Samsung’s in the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Yes, it’s true that LG does show notifications with its AOD: You can see Gmail, Telegram, Google+, and even app update notifications on the secondary display, something that doesn’t happen with Samsung’s AOD. We here at SamMobile have also pointed out that Samsung’s AOD in the S7 and S7 edge should provide the same notifications and more. Reviewers have been quick to point this out, but I’m afraid they haven’t told you the whole story.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge’s AOD is brighter than the LG G5’s

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge’s Always On Display is much brighter than that of the LG G5. That’s the first thing you’ll notice when you activate AOD on both phones and look at them side-by-side for the first time. The LG G5 AOD is too dim for viewing. Viewing angles are poor and, unless you have the phone right up to your eyes, you’ll hardly be able to see what’s on the G5 AOD.

So, even with the LG G5 notifications in AOD, it’s hard to see and creates an unpleasant viewing situation. If first impressions are everything, then the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will blow you away with their gorgeous Always On Displays.

LG may have very well lowered the brightness of its IPS LCD Quad HD display to save battery, but the impression left with the user is that the display simply isn’t good enough. Tech reviewers can tell you that the IPS LCD on the LG G5 is gorgeous, but you may have a different impression when you see it up close. What good is a display, called “Always On,” if it looks as though it’s always off? Do email and other Android notifications matter if the display is a turnoff, literally?

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge AOD provides battery percentage; the LG G5 AOD does not

I’ve been using the Galaxy S7 edge and the LG G5 interchangeably over the last few days, but it just hit me two days ago that, to my surprise, the LG G5 doesn’t display the phone’s battery percentage on the AOD. Sure enough, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge AOD does, giving you information at a glance that LG does not.

Both Samsung and LG convinced us at MWC 2016 that most smartphone users check their phones 150 times a day; and, yes, consumers want to check their email notifications without having to turn their phone on (some do, anyway). It is also true, however, that many want to check their battery percentage without turning the phone on. Sure, it could be said that smartphone users want lots of notifications and battery percentages on the Always On Display, but if I must choose, I’d rather have battery percentage than multiple notifications. If I must turn on my phone to see my battery percentage remaining, notifications on the AOD are of little use when I can just see them from the drop-down window.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge AOD supports greater customization than the LG G5 AOD

This is yet another reason why reviewers have only told you half the story about the Galaxy S7/S7 edge and LG G5 Always On Displays: the Galaxy S7/S7 edge AOD provides greater customization than that of the LG G5. Reviewers focus on email notifications like Gmail, for example, to make their case for the G5’s superiority over Samsung’s Always On Display. Apart from notifications, though, the G5’s AOD is severely limited. Once you find the feature in your display settings on the device, you get to choose two options: 1) add the time or 2) your personal signature. That’s it; there are only two options available.

Screenshot_20160429-042813

In contrast to the LG G5 AOD, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Always On Display allows you to customize your experience by giving you the option to select what content to show (clock, calendar, or image), clock style (7 clock styles to choose from, Roman numeral and dual clock options among others), as well as a background image (4 to select). Customization is an important part of Android and Android’s user base has always preferred more customization to reduced customization.

When you look at the customization options Samsung and LG give you for their Always On Displays, it’s no contest: Samsung gives you more in the S7 and S7 edge.

Conclusion

I respect my fellow colleagues in the field of tech who cover smartphones every day. I’ve learned from them and continue to benefit from their in-depth videos and coverage. However, it is my desire that Samsung be represented properly and accurately in the tech press. I take it hard when my fellow media journalists set up a straw man argument by downplaying the Galaxy S7/S7 edge AOD to give the LG G5 an edge in the contest.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are great phones in their own right; so is the LG G5. At the same time, however, all great smartphones stand or fall based on what they offer the consumer. The Android smartphone race has always been a competitive one, and LG will never improve its smartphone if it doesn’t bear the same heat now that Samsung has taken over the years. All great smartphones are transformed in the ashes of criticism.

Samsung brings Gear 360 Manager app to the Galaxy Apps store

Samsung’s Galaxy Apps store and its Gear Apps store have been estranged for some time, with Gear S2 users having to have the Gear Apps store for their smartwatch apps and the Galaxy Apps store for everything else. The Korean giant has started streamlining its experience so as to make its own software and services more easily accessible to users old and new, with the Gear Apps store being relocated to the Galaxy Apps store (though the Gear Manager app remains separate) not too long ago. With the Gear 360 having been announced at MWC 2016 and launched in the company’s home country, Samsung has added the Gear 360 Manager app to the Galaxy Apps store.

The Gear 360 Manager app is named after the Gear 360, Samsung’s new 360-degree VR camera that was launched in South Korea today for $350 with pre-orders starting a week ago (and bringing a free battery pack for early adopters). The device features IP53 water and dust resistance, two 15-megapixel fisheye lens cameras that produce 30MP images and 360-degree videos, a microUSB port for charging, a microSD card slot that provides up to an additional 128GB of storage, and a 1,350mAh battery. Samsung intends to roll out the Gear 360 to 450 brick-and-mortar stores nationwide by May, but Europe pricing with a May 22nd shipping date and US pricing for B&H only (for now, anyway),  indicates the company’s plans for a worldwide rollout by the end of Q2 2016.

If you’ve gotten your hands on a Gear 360 or want to understand how it all works, Samsung has provided an info graphic as well as a 2-minute clip to satisfy your curiosity.

Galaxy J5 (2016) Black Edition listed on Amazon France for €275.69

While we were waiting for the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) to launch in European markets, Samsung has gone ahead and launched a Galaxy J5 (2016) Black Edition in France. The device is listed on Amazon France for €275.69 (roughly $315), and as its name suggests, a full black color tone runs across the entire phone, at least on the front. Oddly, the listing on Amazon has next to no details except a single picture of the phone, but it should be the real deal given Samsung itself is the seller.

The 2016 versions of the Galaxy J5 and J7 have been listed on Samsung’s website in various European countries, with Samsung Spain listing the J7 as out of stock and with a €299 price tag. Currently, both the Galaxy J5 (2106) and Galaxy J7 (2016) are available in China and South Korea, but there is no word on when the devices will go on sale in other markets. These phones are rather good budget options from Samsung, so hopefully the Korean giant won’t take too long to make them available for consumers around the world.

Carphone Warehouse launches exclusive Silver Titanium variant of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Independent UK-based smartphone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, has today launched an exclusive Silver Titanium variant of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge on its online store. Aside from being anodized in a new colorway, the handset remains identical to all other models both in terms of hardware and software — so folks in the United Kingdom will still be getting their hands on Samsung’s in-house Exynos 8890 unit.

Just in case you need a refresher on their specifications, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge pack a 5.1-inch/5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, 4GB of RAM, a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU, a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), a 5-megapixel selfie shooter and a 3,000mAh/3,600mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Spigen Neo Hybrid case review

Mobile phone cases aren’t a new thing. In fact, they are one of the most popular smartphone accessories. With recent flagship smartphones from Samsung favoring a glass sandwich design that may shatter easily, it’s now even more important to safeguard your shiny new phone from scratches, bumps, and drops. It has been more than a month since the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge hit the market. We’ve tried a bunch of cases for these smartphones ever since. After reviewing a few Galaxy S7 edge cases from Olixar and Ringke, we decided to try out Spigen’s Neo Hybrid case.

Spigen Neo Hybrid - Galaxy S7 edge

The Neo Hybrid case comes with a dual-layer design with a two-tone color combination. The inner layer is made up of soft-touch flexible TPU material, and the outer frame is made using a hard polycarbonate material. The inner layer has a pattern on the inside, which makes the layer act as a shock absorber for the phone. The upper and bottom lips of the case are raised by a few millimeters from the phone’s front and back surfaces, so neither the display nor the camera lens of the device touches the surface. The covering over the volume and power buttons is made using the same soft touch TPU material as the inner layer of the case.

Spigen Neo Hybrid Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review - 05

The company claims that the Neo Hybrid case for the Galaxy S7 edge has been certified for military-grade (MIL STD 810G-516.6) protection against drops and shocks. You have to apply some effort to get the phone into the case since the outer frame is hard, but after you manage to fit the phone in, the case protects the device and fits it pretty well. The back of the case is slightly curved on the edges and features a textured finish which makes it easier for the user to grip the device. The raised lip design also makes it easier to pick the device when it is resting on its face on a flat surface.

The S7 edge fell a few times accidentally while I was using this case, sometimes on the corners and sometimes on its face, and the case had no problem protecting the phone from damage. The build quality and materials of the case are pretty impressive. The case didn’t lose its color and the material didn’t chip off in the time of our review. The design is quite accurate, and you won’t face any problems of the case ill-fitting the device. Surprisingly, it was pretty easy to insert the device into the pockets of denim jeans or trousers and to take it out even though it has a soft-touch TPU back with a textured finish.

Spigen Neo Hybrid Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review - 09

The covering over the volume and power buttons offer a very tactile feedback. There are wide cutouts for the headphone jack, microUSB port, primary and secondary microphone holes, and the loudspeaker grill. It was easy to connect almost all the charging cables and headphones to the device without a need to take the phone out of the case. However, I wasn’t able to connect the Sony MDR-7506’s fat 3.5mm jack to the phone as the opening wasn’t quite wide enough. But then, most of you won’t be using headphones with ports as large as that one.

Spigen Neo Hybrid Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review - 02 Spigen Neo Hybrid Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review - 02 Spigen Neo Hybrid Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Review - 09

My on-screen typing experience improved immensely when I used the Galaxy S7 edge with the Neo Hybrid case as our palms weren’t accidentally touching the edges of the curved screen, which is a huge bonus. The cutout for the camera at the back is bordered with a shiny and harder TPU material, making it attractive and protective at the same time. The only way you could damage the device is when it falls on its face at a slant angle onto an uneven surface or a sharp object. The biggest hassle I faced was inserting the device into and taking it out from the case when the need arose.

Overall, the Neo Hybrid case was everything I hoped for; it protected the device pretty well from all the sides, wasn’t very bulky, had an ergonomic design, had big enough cutouts for ports, and it was stylish at the same time. It comes with a 2-year warranty, and it’s available in three colors – champagne colors, gunmetal, and satin silver for $34.99 – from the company’s official web store. If you want a good quality case for your brand new Galaxy S7 edge that not only looks good but also improves the protection as well as ergonomics of the device, this case is recommended.

If you’re looking for a thinner case, do check out our review of the Spigen Thin Fit case.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge home button scratching too easily?

Samsung’s glass and metal design is beautiful, but it has been lamented for being a huge fingerprint magnet. That’s a problem that didn’t go away with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and it looks like there’s another issue with the design of Samsung’s newest flagship smartphones – the home button/fingerprint sensor on these devices doesn’t seem to be very resistant to everyday scratches and scuffs.

It was only a couple of days ago that a few of us here at SamMobile were discussing how the home button on the Galaxy S7 edge hasn’t taken long to develop noticeable wear and tear. Today, the folks over at PhoneArena are confirming what we suspected; a few people on the internet have also pointed out the scratch-prone nature of the S7 and S7 edge’s fingerprint sensor, with some saying their unit came with a scratched button out of the box.

You don’t need to be a heavy user for this damage (if we can call it that) to take place. Our Galaxy S7 that’s barely ever used as a primary device also has these scratches, as you will see in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it; see those white marks on the button?) Our Galaxy S7 isn’t kept upside down at any point, making it likely that whatever material is covering the home button isn’t even impervious to things like the phone coming in contact with the user’s fingers or the insides of their trouser pockets.

home-button-scratch-s7

We have to note that we also noticed this with last year’s flagships, although they took considerable time to start showing these scratches on the home button. The Galaxy Note 5 seemed to be the most resilient of the lot, but all these months later it didn’t turn out to be totally invincible. None was as bad as the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, however, so it seems Samsung’s quality control for its fingerprint sensors has taken a turn for the worse this year.

Of course, it is possible this issue is limited to a few units. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is an issue, one that can mar the look of what are amazingly attractive smartphones. We’ve reached out to Samsung for a statement on the matter and will update this story once we get a response. In the meantime, let us know if you have a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge with a scratched home button!

Gear VR users have consumed more than 2 million hours worth of content

During its SDC 2016 event in San Francisco, Samsung’s Executive VP of Media Solutions, John Pleasants, revealed that users of the firm’s Gear VR headset have consumed more than 2 million hours of virtual reality content to date, which translates to over 228 years spent immersed in the VR world.

That’s a pretty astonishing statistic when you consider that the Gear VR was initially released in small batches. It’s only the latest version, which carries a price tag of just $99, that was targeted at the mass market — so the company has done a fantastic job at ensuring there’s a sufficient amount of varied content suitable for all customers.

Samsung demonstrates the quickest way to set up the Gear 360 in new video

Samsung has taken to its official YouTube channel to share a video demonstrating how to set up the Gear 360, which is now making its way into the hands of the public in South Korea, upon removing it from the box. The clip itself is almost 2-minutes long and highlights the entire setup process — so there’s no need to open and comb through the hefty manual that ships with the device.
