AR Star Wars ship invade the USA, and only Galaxy phones can see them

The Samsung-Star Wars promotional saga continues, and Galaxy phone owners residing in select cities in the United States are in for an augmented reality treat called Invasion with Galaxy. This is because the World Premiere of The Rise of Skywalker on December 16 also marked the launch of AR Star Wars ships across the skies of Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

Star Wars fans who own a Galaxy phone and reside in one of the aforementioned cities can access Invasion with Galaxy through their Samsung Members app. They can then aim their phones at the skies to see the augmented reality Star Wars ships in the viewfinder.

Now, if you reside in the United States but not in any of the cities above, fret not, you can still get your fair share of Star Wars AR goodness, but you’ll have to wait until December 23 when Invasion with Galaxy will extend to include all of the US and Puerto Rico.

This will be a limited-time promo ending January 2, so make sure you get to enjoy Invasion with Galaxy while it lasts. And no, you don’t need a special Star Wars edition Galaxy Note 10+ to check out the AR ships, but it would probably get you bonus points from fans of the franchise.

Galaxy S10 Lite specs include macro camera, coming soon for 679 euro

It was about two months ago when we first heard that Samsung has an affordable variant of the Galaxy S10 in the pipeline. This device will reportedly be launched as the Galaxy S10 Lite. Recent reports have suggested that it will be out before the end of this year. So it could be unveiled in the coming days.

The Galaxy S10 Lite bears model number SM-G770F. No press renders of the device have been leaked online so far. However, a new report offers additional details about the specs of this device.

New information about the Galaxy S10 Lite specs surfaces

The often reliable WinFuture reports that the Galaxy S10 Lite is going to feature a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 2,400×1080 pixel resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Instead of an Exynos chip, the device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 in all regions with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It will be possible to expand the storage up to 1TB using a microSD card.

The Galaxy S10 Lite’s camera will give us much to talk about. It’s said to feature a primary 48-megapixel f/2.0 sensor with tilt-OIS technology. The lens in front of the camera sensor tilts a few degrees in this optical image stabilization solution in addition to the usual displacement within the sensor to compensate for shaking.

Completing the camera system will be a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and even a 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro lens. Samsung introduced the macro camera with the Galaxy A51 a few days back. Early camera samples look promising. A 32-megapixel f/2.2 camera will be present in the centered punch hole for selfies.

The Galaxy S10 Lite is also confirmed to feature a 4,500mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. We exclusively revealed two months ago that the handset will be available in white, black and blue colors. It will be priced at 679 euro in Europe which is around $755. The handset will come with Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.0.

Not only will this device have a larger display than the Galaxy S10e’s 5.8-inch flat panel, it also has better cameras, more RAM and a significantly bigger battery. Yet the Galaxy S10e sells for 749 euro at full retail. Check the full Galaxy S10e specs for a better comparison of the two devices.

Samsung is reportedly going to unveil the Galaxy S10 Lite in the next few days. There’s a Galaxy Note 10 Lite in the pipeline as well. Renders of this device were leaked this week, revealing it in all its glory. It’s possible that both handsets may be made official on the same day.

Qualcomm reluctant to give Samsung access to its premium chipset design

The dynamic between major chipset manufacturers seems to be shifting constantly. In recent news, Samsung’s foundry business performed very well this year, yet it might find itself in a difficult position as Qualcomm has reportedly decided to keep its most premium chipset solution away from Samsung’s hands.

The Snapdragon 865 was initially thought to be manufactured by Samsung using its 7nm EUV process, but more recent reports seemingly confirm that the chipset is being mass-produced by TSMC. The reason, according to Business Korea, is that Qualcomm doesn’t want to share its AP-related intellectual properties with Samsung. This way it can better protect its trade secrets and weaken Samsung’s foundry business all at the same time.

A conflict of interests might be boiling

Samsung and Qualcomm have collaborated in the past and, in fact, the non-premium Snapdragon 765 chipset is still said to be planned to enter production in Samsung’s facilities. However, Qualcomm is apparently reluctant to give Samsung early previews of its top tier chipset solution, particularly because Samsung designs and manufactures its own chipset lineup Exynos.

Samsung is distancing itself from custom CPU cores for its Exynos SoCs, and the company will reportedly focus more on GPU and NPU development instead. Nevertheless, this might not be enough to convince Qualcomm that its technologies won’t be used against itself, and the US-based company will collaborate with TSMC more closely, while Samsung’s foundry business will lose a lot of potential revenue because of it.

Samsung’s foundry business is said to account for 17.8% of the market by the end of 2019. But even though its performance was positive throughout the year, TSMC continues to have the lion’s share with 52.7% of the market. Perhaps other collaborations will help Samsung’s foundry business in the long run, and it was earlier this week when the company announced that it will be making chips for Baidu.

New Galaxy S9 Android 10 beta released, includes January security patch

After releasing the third Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 9 earlier this week, Samsung is now pushing a new beta update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ as well. The update seems to have been released in India today and should soon make its way to other markets where the beta program is available. It includes the January 2020 security patch even though the new year is still two weeks away.

Like the latest beta for the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy S9’s beta update has a short list of bug fixes, another indication that Samsung could soon wrap up the beta program and release the stable update, at least in some countries. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 are scheduled to get Android 10 in January according to Samsung’s roadmap, but these roadmaps are more about estimates than concrete time frames. Even the Galaxy S10, Note 10, M20, and M30 are also officially scheduled to get the Android 10 update in January yet are already being updated in many markets.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ owners participating in the beta program can download the new update over the air by tapping Download and install option under the Software update menu in the device settings. The build number for the update is G960FXXU7ZSL9 and G965FXXU7ZSL9 for the S9 and S9+ respectively.

Thanks for the tip, Shivam!

Galaxy S11 to have 48MP telephoto camera next to 108MP main camera?

The Galaxy S11’s primary rear camera will have a megapixel count that’s nine times higher than the cameras Samsung’s flagship phones have been equipped with for the last few years, but what about the other rear cameras? Thanks to the rumors and leaks, it’s pretty certain that the Galaxy S11 series will be capable of taking 5x zoom photos, and now, a new rumor suggests the telephoto lens will have a resolution of at least 48 megapixels.

Samsung’s existing flagships have all employed a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor, and its 2019 flagships also have a 16MP ultra-wide camera. Considering the substantial jump in the main camera’s resolution, it would make sense for Samsung to bump up the megapixel count on the other cameras as well. Having a 108-megapixel primary camera flanked by 12MP and 16MP telephoto and ultra-wide cameras would look rather odd, although it does make one wonder how the Galaxy S11’s pricing will be affected if Samsung puts three higher-resolution sensors on it.

It is possible Samsung will use the same 16MP ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy S11 lineup as it has on the Galaxy S10, Note 10, and Galaxy Fold, but we can only wait and see what the technical specs will be. Of course, the real-world performance of these cameras will matter no matter how many megapixels you cram in there, and just how good the photos come out — and whether or not features like Space Zoom are actually present — is something we will find out only after the Galaxy S11 has gone official.
