Galaxy A60 specs leak reveals 6.7-inch display and 32MP triple-camera

The Galaxy A90 may not be the only new premium mid-range device that Samsung may launch in the coming months. It appears that the company may be working on the Galaxy A60 as well. It would presumably slot between the recently announced Galaxy A50 and the as yet unannounced Galaxy A70.

This Galaxy A60 specs leak shows that the device may have a larger 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display. Samsung has adopted this waterdrop style notch for the new Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A50’s display is slightly smaller at 6.4-inch. Like the Galaxy A50, it’s also said to have an in-display fingerprint sensor. It would most likely be an optical sensor.

Galaxy A60 specs include larger display and bigger battery

It could also feature a triple-camera system at the back. That wouldn’t really be unique as the Galaxy A50 has one as well. However, this leak suggests that the Galaxy A60 will get a 32-megapixel primary sensor with a 5-megapixel depth and 8-megapixel wide-angle camera. The Galaxy A50 has similar depth and ultrawide cameras but the primary sensor is 25-megapixel. There may also be a 32-megapixel front-facing camera.

Other improvements include a 4,500mAh battery compared to the Galaxy A50’s 4,000mAh. Samsung may offer the Galaxy A60 in 6/8GB RAM + 128GB storage configurations. The “SM6150” chipset refers to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675. Samsung may use the same “3D Glasstic” finish for the Galaxy A60 like the other handsets in this new series.

It may not be long before Samsung officially launches the Galaxy A60. Whether or not it also makes its debut in India remains to be seen. The Galaxy A50 starts at INR 19,990 (~$280) in India so one can expect the Galaxy A60 to cost a bit more than that.

Galaxy S10 display blows everything else out of the water

Samsung makes significant mobile OLED display technology advances with every new generation of its flagship smartphones. There’s a reason why previous Galaxy flagships have received the coveted crown of having the best smartphone display on the market. Samsung Display, the conglomerate’s display affiliate, clearly knows a thing or two about making exceptional panels.

So it should not come as a surprise that DisplayMate’s analysis of the Galaxy S10 display finds that it essentially blows everything else out of the water. Samsung did mention some of its results during the Galaxy S10 launch event. It highlighted that the Galaxy S10 display has the highest color accuracy of any smartphone display and can reach a peak brightness level of 1,200 nits. DisplayMate has now published its full results for the new flagship.

Galaxy S10 has the best smartphone display on the market

The Galaxy S10 display performance has been improved to record-setting Outstanding levels. It sets over a dozen new Display Performance Records. This includes Absolute Color Accuracy at 0.4 JNCD. That’s regarded as “Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect.” Samsung has evidently focused on improving the overall display Picture Quality and Color Accuracy which is a welcome step.

The OLED Hardware Performance has been improved as well. There’s a 17 percent Brightness increase in the High Brightness Mode compared to the Galaxy S9. As we expected, DisplayMate has given the Galaxy S10 its highest ever A+ grade. It receives 100% All Green Very Good to Excellent Ratings across all categories. That’s despite new tests and tougher grading standards. The tests were performed on pre-release production units of the Galaxy S10 that were provided by Samsung.

The Galaxy S10 display also sets a new record for the Highest Full Screen Brightness at 804 nits. Records have also been set for Peak Display Brightness, Contrast Ratio and Native Color Gamut. Simply put, the Galaxy S10 has the best smartphone display on the market. DisplayMate regards it as “the most innovative and high performance smartphone display that we have ever lab tested.” It goes without saying that you’ll be getting your money’s worth with Samsung’s new flagship as far as the display is concerned.

Is Samsung making a 50% profit on every Galaxy S10+ sold?

Smartphone manufacturers tend to make more money on premium smartphones as they have a higher profit margin. Samsung may sell tens of millions of affordable devices but its flagships are the ones that really bring in the money. It will be looking to rake in some serious money with the Galaxy S10 series. One can imagine that the company has a healthy profit margin on the devices.

How healthy, though? Companies never reveal the true cost of manufacturing their devices and the markups they apply to make money. A simple calculation of the expected bill of materials cost of the Galaxy S10+ suggests a profit margin of over 50 percent. However, it’s unlikely that’s how much Samsung is making on each unit.

Galaxy S10+ seemingly has a materials cost of $420

A summary of the BOM cost by TechInsights suggests a manufacturing price of $420 for the 8GB+128GB variant of the Galaxy S10+. That’s about 42 percent of its $999 retail price. The most expensive component is understandably the Infinity-O display at $86.50. The processor and modem are next at $70.50 followed by the $56.50 triple-camera system.

This suggested cost doesn’t take into account the money spent on research and development of this device. Flagship devices require significant investment in R&D and Samsung pours billions into these efforts every year. Furthermore, the cost doesn’t reflect expenses for auxiliary materials, assembly, shipping, promotions, discounts and more.

Even if on the face of it the Galaxy S10+ costs 42 percent of its $999 retail price, the difference isn’t what Samsung is pocketed. It’s difficult to really be sure just how much Samsung is making on each Galaxy S10 model sold. However, once all of the other costs are taken into account, it’s pretty unlikely that there’s a profit margin of over 50 percent on the new flagship.

Samsung Health gains guided meditation features with Calm integration

Samsung is expanding the capabilities of its health app with a new collaboration. The company has teamed up with Calm to bring guided meditation, sleep, and other wellness features to its Samsung Health app.

Calm is a popular guided meditation and relaxation app with more than 40 million installs across platforms. The app offers hundreds of meditation programs aimed at calming anxiety, managing stress, improving focus, and more. There are sessions for everyone – from beginners to advanced users. The service follows a freemium model and has been received positively on both Android and iOS.

Available only on Galaxy devices running Android Pie

The integration enables Samsung users to access many of the Calm’s features easily by just tapping the “Mindfulness” icon in the Samsung Health app. Tapping the icon for the first time prompts users to log in or create a Calm account, after which they can access Calm’s content within the Samsung Health app. The integration also enables Galaxy Watch Active users to control their meditation seasons from the watch.

The new capabilities go live today in ten markets initially: Australia, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, U.S., U.K., and Ireland. It will be available only on Galaxy devices running Android Pie. Samsung also mentions Galaxy Watch Active support but hasn’t offered any details about the same on its other smartwatches.

“Our work with Calm is going to make it easier than ever for Samsung Health users to practice mindfulness, so they can work towards achieving better overall health,” said Peter Koo, Corporate SVP and Head of the Health Service Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung, commenting on the collaboration.

Check out Spigen’s prototype cases for the Galaxy Fold

As the release date for the Galaxy Fold inches closer, case makers are busy developing cases to have them ready when the foldable device goes on sale. Spigen, one of the well-known brands in this space, has released mock-ups of three cases – Tough Armor, Ultra Hybrid, and Thin Fit – for the Fold. The cases, which are made out of plastic and silicone materials, will offer varying levels of protection and will be priced at around $20 when launched.

The core design of all the three cases is similar, with a hinge and cutouts for the cover display and the triple-camera setup. Given how critical the hinge is in ensuring seamless opening and closing of the Galaxy Fold, it is safe to say the quality of the hinge alone can decide the fate of these cases. The company says it is still developing these cases and intends to launch them in mid-April.

Making cases for the Galaxy Fold is relatively easy

Since the Galaxy Fold is not yet available for sale, Spigen has developed these cases based on the measurements revealed by Samsung. Spigen says they started working on the cases even before the Fold was officially announced. The company reportedly developed around 20 different prototypes to account for all rumors and possibilities.

Interestingly, making cases for the book-like foldable design of the Galaxy Fold might be the easiest of all the foldable designs we have seen so far. The foldable devices shown by Huawei, Xiaomi, and OPPO present a much bigger challenge to case makers as the display folds on the outside. It will be interesting to see how case makers will overcome that challenge.

Fortnite’s exclusive Galaxy Skin redemption period will get over on March 7

Samsung had announced an exclusive Galaxy Skin for Fortnite characters during the launch of the Galaxy Note 9 last year. The exclusive Fortnite outfit was available for Note 9 and Tab S4 owners. However, the free redemption period of the skin is now coming to an end. Samsung US recently announced that the “Galaxy Skin will be officially vaulted on March 7.”

Fortnite iKONIC Skin for the Galaxy S10

Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4 owners are now left with only a few days to redeem their exclusive Fortnite skin. The free redemption period will end on March 7 2019, a day before the Galaxy S10 gets released. Samsung, however, is yet to specify if the Galaxy Skin will be available to buy from the item shop or not.

Though this exclusive Note 9-Fortnite collaboration is coming to an end, it is not like Samsung is terminating its partnership with Epic Games, the production house behind Fortnite, altogether. In fact, the company is expanding the partnership with the Galaxy S10 as well.

Samsung has announced that customers who pre-order the Galaxy S10+ will receive an exclusive iKONIC Fortnite skin. The company has also laid out iKONIK skin redemption steps on its official website. This Fortnite skin is modeled after Jung Chan-woo from South Korean band iKon.

Galaxy S10 gets Netflix HDR certification, Galaxy M devices get HD support

Netflix is adding HDR support to the new Galaxy S10 family. All of the three Galaxy S10 phones can now play Netflix videos in HD and HDR10. The video streaming service is expanding HD support to the newly launched Galaxy M series as well. The devices, Galaxy M10, M20, and M30, are Samsung’s latest budget smartphones.

Galaxy S10 gets Netflix HDR certification

Netflix is one of the most widely used streaming services around the world. And whenever a new major Android smartphone gets launched, Netflix certifies it with either HD or HDR support, provided it comes with Widevine L1 support out-of-the-box. The Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy M-series devices are the latest Samsung devices to get the Netflix certification.

The Galaxy S10, S10e, and the S10+ have been certified to support streaming video content in both HD and HDR10. With this support, Galaxy S10 users with the necessary Netflix account tier will be able to watch videos in the best possible quality. The lower-end Galaxy M-series devices, meanwhile, will support video streaming in HD only.

In addition to these devices, Netflix is also expanding HD support to devices running some of Qualcomm’s latest chipset. Smartphones running the Snapdragon 675, Snapdragon 710, or the Snapdragon 855 are now pre-certified to stream Netflix videos in HD, provided they also ship with Widevine L1 support.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update rolling out

There’s good news for those who have been waiting for the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie update. The carrier started testing the update for this handset last week and is finally rolling it out now. The testing stage comes after development in T-Mobile’s software update program.

So once it entered testing it was evident that T-Mobile would roll it out soon. The carrier hasn’t been the quickest to release Android Pie for this device. Both AT&T and Sprint have already released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9 on their networks.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie rolling out now

T-Mobile has already released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. It currently lists the Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy J7 Star and the Galaxy A6 in the development stage. What that means is it’s going to be a while before these devices get their taste of Pie.

Once the firmware is done with the development stage, T-Mobile runs several tests on it. This is to find any bugs and fix them before the firmware is sent out to the public. It’s only rolled out once the carrier is reasonably sure that the update is bug-free.

It seems to have made that conclusion as firmware version N960U1UEU1CSB3 is now being rolled out by the carrier for the Galaxy Note 9. This will be a phased rollout so not all users will receive it at the same time. It should, however, go live for all Galaxy Note 9 users on T-Mobile in the not too distant future.

In addition to the Pie goodness and Samsung’s One UI, this update also brings new e911 call flow, a compass calibration fix and a BYOD update. Galaxy Note 9 users can now head over to the Software update section of the Settings app to manually check for the update. It’s also available for download from our firmware section.
