Samsung reportedly developing One UI 2.5 for its smartphones

All the smartphones and tablets from Samsung that run Android 10 use the One UI 2.0 software. High-end phones such as the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip, which were launched recently, come pre-installed with One UI 2.1. Older devices are now getting the One UI 2.0 update as well. It is now being reported that the company is currently working on One UI 2.5 for its upcoming devices.

According to the information posted by the moderator on the Samsung Community forum in South Korea, the company is developing One UI 2.5. The first devices to get access to it would be the phones in the Galaxy Note 20 series. Currently, there isn’t enough information about One UI 2.5’s complete feature list. However, the home screen moderator of the forum says that the upcoming software will bring Google’s UI navigation gestures to third-party app launchers, something that’s not available on phones running One UI 2.0 or One UI 2.1.

Galaxy A series of smartphones that will be launched after the Galaxy Note 20 would reportedly get One UI 2.5 as well. It is possible that Samsung will roll out One UI 2.5 to more devices in the Galaxy A, Galaxy M, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, and the Galaxy Fold series in the future.

Which other features do you want Samsung to implement with One UI 2.5? Let us know in the comments section below.

New Galaxy S20 firmware update is rolling out to fix camera autofocus

The Exynos-powered Galaxy S20 series is getting its second post-launch firmware update as we speak, version G98xxXXU1ATCH. It’s not yet available over-the-air (OTA) but Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra owners around the world can download and install the new firmware via Smart Switch or from our archive.

You may be eager to learn what changes have been introduced and whether the new firmware addresses any of the issues that have been rumored to be tackled by Samsung next. Well, the biggest change seems to consist of a Camera app update, pushing it to version 10.0.01.98 on all three Galaxy S20 models.

The good news continues, as one of the biggest user complaints surrounding the Galaxy S20 series’ camera performance may have just been addressed with this new update, namely slow autofocus. The camera seemingly benefits from faster autofocus post-update, so if you’ve experienced such issues before then your wait for a fix might be over.

For now, the new firmware update is available only for the International Exynos-powered Galaxy S20 models, but there is no doubt that Samsung will want to bring the same improvements to the Snapdragon variants as quickly as possible.

Once again, the firmware update is not rolling OTA as of this writing, but you can refer to your archive and download it manually. Once it will roll-out OTA, you’ll also be able to install it by opening the Settings app on your phone, accessing the Software update menu and tapping the Download and install option.

Coronavirus forces Samsung to shut down all its stores in the US

Governments and businesses across the globe are doing everything they can to flatten the curve and contain the spread of the coronavirus. Samsung has started taking appropriate steps as well given that it also has a massive retail footprint in countries where the rate of infections continues to increase.

Samsung has confirmed that it’s temporarily shutting down all of its stores in the United States as part of an effort to contain the spread of this deadly virus. The company says that it has taken this decision in the best interests of its employees and customers.

Samsung US temporarily closes all of its retail stores

YH Eom, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics America, confirmed in a message to customers that all Samsung stores in the United States have been closed temporarily. It hasn’t be disclosed when the stores would reopen but it’s definitely going to take a few weeks, if not more. Samsung will only think about reopening the stores once the spread has been contained and social distancing guidelines are relaxed.

Customers in the United States can still order products from Samsung’s online store. All of its online customer care channels are also open so 24-hour support is available through Samsung Care, its Facebook and Twitter accounts in addition to phone support at 1-800-SAMSUNG. The company says that all orders from Samsung.com will be fulfilled as quickly as possible.

This wasn’t an isolated move from Samsung Electronics America. All Samsung Experience Stores in China were previously shut down while Samsung Canada has also decided to shut down all of its stores. Samsung has also strongly advised its employees to work from home where possible while also limiting travel for its employees to only mission-critical journeys.

It’s quite possible that we may see Samsung make a similar decision in other countries across the globe where it has a big retail footprint. If the stores are still open in your country, perhaps take advantage of its free Galaxy Sanitizing Service to get your Galaxy phone disinfected before they’re also shut down. You should also follow Samsung’s guide on how to disinfect your phone on your own in order to protect against the coronavirus.

Google’s new Advanced Protection security features prevent sideloading

Google is changing the way its Advanced Protection Program works, effective immediately, and has added two additional security measures to combat phishing and malware threats. The first new security addition to the program makes it so that Advance Protection users are prevented from sideloading mobile apps. The second one enables Play Protect app scanning automatically and prevents Advanced Protection Program members from disabling it.

Regarding the first change, Advanced Protection Program members are still able to install mobile apps from sources other than the Play Store, as long as they are acquired from digital storefronts that come pre-loaded with their phones. In other words, Galaxy smartphone owners who have signed up for the Advanced Protection Program can continue to install and download apps from the Galaxy Store without any difficulties. Sideloading apps, however, has become virtually impossible for these users.

As for the second change, Play Protect is a built-in malware protection for Android devices that leverages machine learning to scan 100 billion apps every day. Android OS users, including Galaxy smartphone owners, can enable or disable Google Play Protect at their leisure. However, those who are part of the Advanced Protection Program no longer have the option of turning Play Protect off. Google wants to ensure that every app installed on a device secured by the Advanced Protection Program will take full advantage of this security feature.

These changes won’t affect you unless you are enrolled in the program

It’s important to keep in mind that these changes won’t affect you unless you are an Advanced Protection Program member. For non-members, sideloading apps and disabling Play Protect is still possible the same way as it’s always been.

This program was devised to offer extra protection for Google accounts owned by people who may be prominent targets of malware attacks and phishing scams, such as business leaders, political campaign teams, activists, journalists and so on. If you haven’t actively enrolled in the program, you need not worry about these changes.

Google customers and Galaxy smartphone owners who may want to enroll in the program can do so as long as they have a smartphone running Android 7.0 or later. Alternatively, they can purchase two security keys from Google and link them to their accounts. You can read more about the program on the official webpage.

Leaked Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) drops the S Pen for two speakers

Samsung is seemingly preparing to release a new Galaxy Tab A (2020) model in the USA, equipped with an 8.4-inch display and hardware that’s very similar to the 8.0-inch Galaxy Tab A with S Pen (2019).

According to a couple of leaked renders shared by @evleaks, the Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) is being readied to hit the US market via AT&T and Verizon, at least.

Despite similarities, the Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) doesn’t have an S Pen

Judging by the leaked render depicting AT&T’s model, the Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) doesn’t have an S Pen slot, even though it shares a lot of hardware similarities with the S Pen-enabled Tab A 8.0 (2019).

The upcoming model is seemingly equipped with the same Exynos 7904 octa-core chipset, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage expandable by up to 512GB via microSD.

Same as last year, the new model features an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing module, and it runs Android 9 out of the box. This is unusual given that Samsung has jumped on the Android 10 bandwagon with pretty much every 2020 device it released so far. But it would seem like the Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) is not as lucky.

It makes up for the lack of S Pen by adopting stereo speakers

Effectively, the main differences between this new model and the 8-inch 2019 release lie in a slightly larger screen that retains the 1920 x 1200 resolution, a larger 5,000mAh battery (up from 4,200mAh), and the absence of an S Pen.

On the bright side, ditching the S Pen has allowed Samsung to fit two down-firing speakers instead of one, making media consumption more enjoyable. It might not be the best trade-off in the eyes of some prospective buyers, but others could prefer this change. Ultimately, the launch price will play an important role in determining that.

There’s also a possibility that Samsung will follow a similar strategy as last year and prepare another Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) variant with an S Pen, but for now, this is just speculation.

Pricing and availability details for the leaked model are unknown but stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

Another Galaxy A41 puzzle piece revealed, launch is imminent

We got another big clue that the official Galaxy A41 launch should technically be just around the corner. After obtaining its obligatory Wi-Fi and Bluetooth approvals, the Galaxy A41 has now popped-up on Samsung Russia’s portal where the device has its own dedicated support page.

The support page refers to model number SM-A415F/DSM, confirming that the phone will have dual-SIM capabilities. No other technical details or design aspects were revealed.

Galaxy A41 quick spec preview

Although the aforementioned support page is void of details, we do have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the Galaxy A41, thanks to previous leaks and reports.

The phone should have a 3,500mAh battery, according to Safety Korea, and it will be one of Samsung’s few devices powered by a MediaTek SoC, besides the Galaxy A21 and A31. Early benchmarks have hinted at the Helio P65 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM. The device will run Android 10 out of the box, but this should come as no surprise given Samsung’s recent commitment to release every new device with the latest version of Android OS pre-installed.

Earlier rumors also hint at a 48-megapixel main camera paired with two other modules – an ultra-wide and a macro sensor – while a few renders leaked recently all but officially confirm an Infinity-U display design.

We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we learn more about the Galaxy A41’s eventual launch and pricing details.

Samsung Canada falls victim to coronavirus, Experience Stores shut down

Businesses around the world are taking measures to fight against the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, and Samsung is no exception. Earlier this month, before the coronavirus was labeled a pandemic, the company had to temporarily shut down production at its Gumi plant, while earlier this week, Samsung strongly advised its employees to work from home. Now, after China, Samsung Canada has fallen victim to the coronavirus, and the company has decided to shut down all of its Experience Stores nationwide.

In a recent statement, Samsung Canada revealed that the safety of its customers, employees, and partners is a top priority, and to protect them from the coronavirus, the company has decided to shut down all of its Experience Stores across Canada, effective immediately. This could very well lead to weaker Galaxy S20 sales, but the good news for prospective buyers in Canada is that they can still order Samsung products online.

Samsung Canada confirmed that its online store will remain open, and orders ‘will be fulfilled as timely as possible.’ Of course, the brick & mortar Experience Stores won’t be permanently shut down, but there’s no way of knowing when things will go back to normal. Samsung will continue to ‘monitor the situation closely and adjust […] operations as appropriate.’

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 (Galaxy Tab S20?) flagship tablet in development

Samsung’s next flagship tablet has now entered development. Since it will be the Galaxy Tab S6’s successor, you’ll expect it to be called the Galaxy Tab S7. Whatever it ends up being called, at least we know now that Samsung will definitely be releasing a flagship tablet this year.

Not much information is known about the new tablet at this point in time but it can be safely assumed that there’s going to be a Wi-Fi and cellular variant. 5G is also a possibility since there’s already a 5G variant of the Galaxy Tab S6.

What will Samsung call its next flagship tablet?

As our friends over at GalaxyClub point out, Samsung now has two tablets under development with model numbers SM-T970 and SM-T975, corresponding to the Wi-Fi and cellular variants respectively.

Samsung might just call it the Galaxy Tab S7 but seeing as how it has shaken up the branding for its mobile devices this year, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility that the company could opt to call it the Galaxy Tab S20 instead. We should have more clarity on the name in the coming months.

It’s interesting to note that the model numbers for this tablet aren’t in the same SM-T8xx series as earlier flagship tablets. For example, the Galaxy Tab S6 has model number SM-T860. It’s too soon to speculate what this change represents and may not even be of much significance.

Since the tablet is still in very early stages of development, there’s not a lot of information about its specs right now. Samsung opted for the latest Snapdragon 855 chip for the Galaxy Tab S6 last year so we can expect that the upcoming tablet will get the Snapdragon 865. It may retain the 10.5-inch WQXGA Super AMOLED display but perhaps bezels may be trimmed significantly if Samsung decides to go the Infinity-O route.

The Galaxy Tab S6 was Samsung’s first tablet with a dual camera so while its successor may not have the same camera specs as this year’s flagship smartphones, expect some improvements in this department as well. We also hope that Samsung brings 25W fast charging to the tablet. It may not launch a separate 5G variant of the tablet like it did last year, the cellular option might just be 5G-only like it did with the Galaxy S20 in most markets.

The Galaxy Tab S7 or Galaxy Tab S20 has popped up on the radar much earlier than its predecessor. We first told you about the Galaxy Tab S6 entering development in May last year, barely two months before it was unveiled on July 31. That’s not to say it will be coming out much earlier. We can expect Samsung to release its new flagship tablet at some point over the summer.

Samsung Galaxy M21 will be launched in Germany as well

Samsung has largely kept its Galaxy M series limited to India where these entry-level handsets have done very well for themselves. The company is going to bring some of the new models to markets across Europe, and the Galaxy M21 happens to be one of them.

It officially unveiled the Galaxy M21 today in India. While it hasn’t said as yet when the device will be available elsewhere, there’s a good reason to believe that it will eventually be available in Germany as well.

Galaxy M21 is headed to Europe

A support page for the Galaxy M21 is now live on Samsung Germany’s website. This serves as a solid indication that this handset is eventually going to be released in Germany. We reported on this possibility last month as well when we pointed out that the Galaxy M31 is going to be released in several European countries.

The Galaxy M21 shares many of its specs with the Galaxy M31. It has the same 6.4-inch Full HD+ display and chunky 6,000mAh battery. The Galaxy M21 is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9611 processor with 4GB RAM and 64/128GB storage options. A microSD card slot is also present for external expansion. The triple-camera setup features a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. There’s a 20-megapixel selfie camera up front.

Samsung will start selling the Galaxy M21 in India from March 23rd. It may take a few weeks after that for it to arrive in Germany.

Samsung grilled about Exynos chips and lack of features by shareholders

Samsung Electronics went ahead with its 51st annual shareholders’ meeting at the Suwon Convention Center in Suwon, South Korea despite concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak. The company did ramp up sanitation efforts to ensure the protection of its shareholders who came to attend the meeting.

It’s normal for executives to face tough questions from shareholders at these meetings. Even though the meeting was held amid less ideal circumstances, the shareholders made sure to grill Samsung executives on a variety of topics.

Shareholders demand answers on some very valid points

One of the shareholders pointed out that their child, a first-grader, wanted to buy an iPhone but they bought the child a Galaxy phone instead just because they’re a shareholder. What was Samsung doing to raise its brand identity? DJ Koh, President of Samsung’s mobile division, responded that the company must learn what it can from its competitors for this.

Another shareholder asked when Samsung will bring active noise cancellation to the Galaxy Buds. It was pointed out to Koh that Apple recently added the feature to the AirPods Pro. It was indeed rumored at one point that the new Galaxy Buds+ might feature ANC but they don’t. Koh said that it’s a matter of carefully deciding which feature should be introduced in a new product.

Koh also had to face a question about Samsung’s decision to maintain the split between Qualcomm and Exynos chips for its flagship phones, despite the performance and efficiency gap between the two. The Galaxy S20 comes with the Snapdragon 865 in South Korea, not the Exynos 990.

“What is the reason for sticking to the poor performance of Exynos and how to improve it?” asked a shareholder. Koh responded that Samsung doesn’t just push the Exynos chip because it’s made by the System LSI division of the company, which generates a significant chunk of its revenue from orders by the mobile division. “We are choosing a chipset based on competitive logic,” Koh reportedly said. The machine translation of the report, which is in Korean, also mentions that Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kim Ki-Nam listened to Koh talk about competitive logic with an “expressionless” look.

Koh also reiterated that the company was making efforts to regain its lost market share in China. “It is very heartbreaking,” he said, referring to Samsung’s market share declining to just 1 percent in the lucrative Chinese market. Samsung shook up its entire local distribution and sales network last year to reignite growth and Koh is confident that it will deliver results.

Watch this incredibly crisp 8K video of the Arctic Circle shot using Galaxy S20

The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra are Samsung’s first phones that can record 8K videos. All three phones can record 8K videos at 24fps using their rear-facing, high-resolution camera sensors. Now, we can see some stunning results from the Arctic Circle in the form of a cinematic 8K video shot using the Galaxy S20+.

Christou Visuals, a team of videographers who shoot cinematic travel films, have shot an 8K video of the Lofoten archipelago in the Arctic Circle using the Galaxy S20+ and published it on YouTube. They used the default camera app on the phone and took the help of a gimbal sometimes to stabilize the device. The soundtrack, however, was added to the video in the post-production process.

The Lofoten archipelago in Norway is one of the northernmost populated regions in the Arctic Circle. It lies 169km inside the Arctic Circle and 2,420km away from the north pole. You can watch the waves, snowclad mountains, shores, and the roads in the fantastic video. Note that the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+ use their 64MP telephoto cameras to record 8K videos, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra uses its 108MP primary sensor for the same task.

Even with all the YouTube compression, the visuals in the video look stunning. If you have one of those 8K QLED TVs with HDR from Samsung, it’s best to watch the video on your TV.

GPS lock issue on your Galaxy S20? You’re not alone

The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra offer the best hardware you can get on a flagship smartphone right now, but it seems these phones could have benefited from more time in the oven. Over the course of the past week, a number of Galaxy S20 owners have taken to Samsung’s community forums and Reddit to complain about their phone having issues with locking on to a GPS signal in apps such as Google Maps and Waze.

From what we can gather, some Galaxy S20 units simply fail to lock on to GPS satellites or take too long to do it, making navigation near impossible. Switching from 5G to LTE networks, rebooting the phone, and switching SIM cards all seem to make GPS work properly for a short time, but at the time of this writing, there is no permanent fix. It’s also unclear whether it’s a hardware or software problem, as replacement units are reportedly suffering from the same issue.

It’s worth noting that the GPS lock issue seems to be limited to the Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra sold in the US and Canada. There aren’t any complaints from people with the Exynos variants, and we can confirm that GPS works as it should on the Exynos-powered Galaxy S20 smartphones we are using here at SamMobile.

Samsung is yet to respond to all the complaints that are continuing to pile up, but we will update this article once the company makes an official statement. In the meantime, let us know if you have faced problems with GPS on your Galaxy S20, S20+ or S20 Ultra down in the comments!

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite bags FCC certification ahead of launch

Samsung is planning to launch a trimmed down version of its flagship tablet in the form of Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. The information about the upcoming tablet first came to light three weeks ago when the device received Bluetooth SIG certification. Now, the tablet has received the mandatory FCC certification, and the supporting documents reveal some of its features.

The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (SM-P615) features LTE, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0 (with LE), and ANT+ connectivity. The tablet will also be released in the Wi-Fi only variant, and it could carry the model number SM-P610. The Wi-Fi only variant was revealed on the NCC certification website last week. The tablet’s name also appeared on Netflix’s list of HD video streaming certified devices.

Galaxy Tab S6 Lite specs

With the help of benchmarks, we know that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite will be equipped with the Exynos 9611 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB/128GB internal storage. It will be launched with Android 10 and One UI 2.0. The tablet also features a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with HDR. Its design was revealed last month, so we know that the tablet will come with an S Pen.

Since the Galaxy Tab S6 is priced at $649, it is safe to assume that the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite will be priced lower. It could start at $399 for the Wi-Fi only variant, but we can get a clearer idea when Samsung launches the tablet in the coming weeks.
