Official Galaxy S9 battery life stats aren’t much different from the Galaxy S8

In the last couple of years, Samsung has made a habit of playing around with the battery sizes on its flagship smartphones, so we were pleasantly surprised (and relieved) that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have the same battery capacities as the Galaxy S8 and S8+. With a more efficient chipset under the hood, one would expect battery life on the new flagships to be slightly better than their predecessors, and that does seem to be the case if we go by Samsung’s official battery life stats for the S9 and S9+.

Galaxy S9 vs Galaxy S8 battery life

A more efficient processor usually means lower battery drain when the device isn’t being actively used, and that might be why MP3 playback times with Always On Display (AOD) disabled have received the biggest boost on the S9 and S9+. The Galaxy S9+ can play music for up to 94 hours when AOD is inactive, 16 hours more than what was possible with the Galaxy S8+. The S9, meanwhile, can last 13 hours longer when playing music compared to the S8. The gains are much smaller with AOD enabled – four hours both on the S9 and S9+.

The only other area of improvement is talk time, which can go up to 22 and 25 hours on the S9 and S9+ respectively. Regular calls are another use case where a phone’s screen isn’t actively used, so it looks like overall battery endurance on the new handsets may be better than the Galaxy S8 and S8+ when they’re sitting idle on your desk or bedside table. Endurance times when the phones are being actively used remain unchanged, and according to the stats, you can expect the same internet usage time over LTE, 3G, or Wi-Fi connections.

As usual, these are theoretical battery stats that will vary based on your usage patterns. They also don’t paint the real picture as each of these stats has been measured with the phones doing a single task, while real-life usage includes a variety of functions over the course of a day. The gist, however, is that battery life on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ may not be notably better than last year’s Galaxy S flagships, and the differences may be even smaller with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ running Android 8.0 Oreo.

See how the battery life stats compare in the table below, and don’t forget to check out our hands-on experience with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Galaxy S8 Galaxy S9
MP3 playback (AOD on) up to 44 hours up to 48 hours
MP3 playback (AOD off) up to 67 hours up to 80 hours
Video playback up to 16 hours up to 16 hours

Internet use (Wi-Fi) up to 14 hours up to 14 hours
Internet use (3G) up to 11 hours up to 11 hours
Internet use (LTE) up to 12 hours up to 12 hours

Galaxy S8+ Galaxy S9+
MP3 playback (AOD on) up to 50 hours up to 54 hours
MP3 playback (AOD off) up to 78 hours up to 94 hours
Video playback up to 18 hours up to 18 hours
Talk time up to 24 hours up to 25 hours
Internet use (Wi-Fi) up to 15 hours up to 15 hours
Internet use (3G) up to 13 hours up to 13 hours

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ support video recording in HEVC format

The newly announced Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ bring many new camera features to the table. The devices sport a Super Speed Dual Pixel sensor, dual aperture lens, Super Slow-mo video capabilities, and AR-powered emoji; the Galaxy S9+ also gets dual cameras like the Galaxy Note 8.

Along with these headline features announced on the stage, the Galaxy S9 duo also bring many small new features that were not mentioned during the unveiling. One such minor camera option is the ability to record videos in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) format, also known as H.265. It’s a new video compression standard which can compress videos twice as efficiently as the H.264/AVC format used by default.

Optional but helps in saving space

The S9 and S9+ allow users to toggle a switch in the video recording settings and record videos in the HEVC format. While recording videos in this format can theoretically save up to 50 percent space compared to H.264 videos, HEVC-coded videos cannot be played everywhere. The new option should be particularly handy for users who record 4K videos regularly as those eat up a lot of storage space.

With the iOS 11 update, Apple enabled HEVC recording in iPhone 7 and later models. Now, its main rival Samsung is also joining the party in supporting the format.

First Galaxy S9 TV commercial posted online

Earlier today, Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at a special event in Barcelona. Now that the company is done with the official unveiling, it has kick-started the marketing activities by publishing the first Galaxy S9 TVC on its YouTube channel.

An overview of all the features

The one-minute TV commercial primarily focuses on all the new camera features of the Galaxy S9 series. The video markets the Galaxy S9’s dual aperture lens and camera features like Super Slow-mo video, AR Emoji, etc. Apart from the camera, the video also mentions the Infinity Display, surround sound, and the water resistance capabilities.

The design was one of the major selling points of the Galaxy S8 series and the same was reflected in the TV commercials last year. With the Galaxy S9 series retaining the same design language of its predecessors, Samsung is selling the improvements made on the inside. This may very well be the strategy for most of the Galaxy S9 TV commercials this year

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will go on sale on March 16. Pre-order dates vary based on carriers and retailers.

Check out Samsung’s official Galaxy S9 vs Galaxy S8 specs comparison infographic

With the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, Samsung set out to “reimagine the smartphone,” and you could say the company has succeeded in making heads turn with its first 2018 flagships. The S9 and S9+ fix many shortcomings of their predecessors and also address some long-standing consumer complaints, such as the lack of stereo speakers and even limited availability of various storage options. The primary rear cameras come with features such as Dual Aperture and 960 fps slow-motion videos, allowing the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ to enhance the imaging experience on a scale previously seen with the introduction of Dual Pixel autofocus on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

We’ve already compared the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ specs with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and Samsung has also posted a pretty little infographic doing the same. Check it out below (it’s a big image, so make sure you wait for it to fully load), and once you’re done, read our hands-on experience to see what we think about Samsung’s new flagship smartphones. T-Mobile’s Galaxy S9 unboxing video is literally out of this world

T-Mobile has a habit of posting unorthodox unboxing videos for Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S handsets every year and it has come through this year as well. We saw the company unbox the Galaxy S8 under water last year with its product expert @AskDes in a cage surrounded by sharks.

The Galaxy S9 unboxing video is literally out of this world as the company has sent @AskDes to the “moon” in order to unbox Samsung’s new flagship and even share some camera samples with us.

Galaxy S9 unboxing video

In case the premise wasn’t already clear to you, T-Mobile hasn’t really sent anyone to the real moon, it’s just part of a clever marketing ploy from the carrier every year to showcase Samsung’s new flagship device while also promoting its brand.

So Des is on the moon with the new flagships and this Galaxy S9 unboxing video shows precisely what’s going to ship with the handset inside its retail packaging. He also walks us through some of the core functionality of the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ in this video.

This Galaxy S9 unboxing video itself is mildly amusing but it does offer you a glimpse inside the new flagship’s box. It’s going to be a while before proper unboxing videos of the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ so this is your best bet for you to get a look inside the retail box.

Samsung pulls a fast one on Apple with Disney AR Emoji deal

Apple and Disney have a long and close relationship. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs used to be on the company’s board while Disney’s CEO Bob Iger is a member of Apple’s board. Steve Jobs also owned 138 million Disney shares which were transferred to a trust run by his widow Laurene Powell Jobs after his death in 2011. Even though she cut the trust’s stake in Disney by half last year, he remains the beneficial owner of 64.3 million Disney shares which translates into a 4 percent stake in the company.

Apple’s product demonstrations often highlight Disney content so one wouldn’t imagine Samsung of all companies to somehow swoop in and get itself a sweet deal.

Samsung pulls a fast one on Apple

As we have already detailed in our detailed post on the Galaxy S9 AR Emoji feature, Samsung has teamed up with Disney to bring its characters to the AR Emoji feature. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will ship with Mickey Mouse so you can use the character instead of your own digital likeness to create AR Emojis based on your facial movements.

Samsung also confirmed during the event today that characters from other Disney properties like The Incredibles will be rolled out as well. Mickey Mouse may have hit close to home to Apple fans given that the iconic rodent has long been a watch face option for the Apple Watch. One can only imagine that this partnership will pave the way for other Disney characters to land on the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ for your amusement.

It’s unclear if a similar deal would be offered to Apple that already launched its own animated emoji feature called Animoji with the iPhone X. Apple fans would really feel that they got the short end of the stick if it turns out that Disney plans on keeping this exclusive to Samsung.

One can only wonder how Samsung managed to pull this off.

AT&T’s Galaxy S9 pre-orders and release date revealed

The Galaxy S9 was made official at Samsung’s Unpacked 2018 event at MWC earlier today, and we’ve seen major carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon announce details on when the S9 and S9+ would go on sale and when pre-orders would start. AT&T has now joined in and revealed that it will start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ on March 2 and make them available for purchase on March 16th. AT&T’s pre-order date matches Verizon’s; as we’ve seen in previous years, some pre-order consumers can expect to get the device in their hands before the release date.

AT&T Galaxy S9 pre-orders and release date

AT&T’s prices start at $790.20 for the Galaxy S9 and $915 for the S9+ if you buy them outright. If you opt for AT&T’s Next plans, you’ll need to shell out $26.34 each month for 30 months for the S9 and $30.50 for the S9+. AT&T’s DIRECTV service will enable users to stream movies, TV shows, sports, and other media on their Galaxy S9 or S9+; those who opt for the company’s unlimited data plans also get access to content from HBO. Game of Thrones on the AKG-tuned stereo speakers and the gorgeous Infinity displays? Not something to scoff at.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ come with the latest and greatest specs and features such as a dual aperture camera, slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second, a dual rear camera with 2x zoom on the S9+, AR Emoji for emojis based on your facial expressions, Android 8.0 Oreo with the Samsung Experience 9.0 UX, and iris and facial recognition that work in tandem. The fingerprint sensor is easier to access, and both handsets are water and dust resistant with IP68 certification. The stereo speakers support Dolby Atmos for virtual 360-degree surround sound.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ 256GB storage variant looks set to be widely available

For the first time since the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were launched, Samsung has announced various storage models for its newest flagships on the very first day. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be launched in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB varieties, and the phones also support up to 400 GB of expandable storage. Samsung hasn’t revealed availability details for the different storage variants yet, but it looks like at least the 256GB version will be widely available alongside the 64GB base model.

Galaxy S9 256GB storage variant looks set to be widely available

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have been listed by Samsung’s divisional arms on their respective websites; we checked out a few of those, and the 256GB model is listed for various countries with the same release date as the base variant. It’s not just limited to one of the color options, either, suggesting that Samsung is going to limit consumers to just 64GB of onboard storage in fewer markets this year. Well, at least when it comes to the 256GB variant; the 128GB model seems to be listed only by Samsung UK and might not be launching in most markets.

Of course, some countries will be limited to the base variant, as has been the case with previous flagships, although this could change a few months later as the company is wont to do. New color options could come as well, and we’d particularly be interested in the Burgundy Red treatment that Samsung gave to the Galaxy S8 last year, even if it might look a tad similar to the Lilac Purple version of the Galaxy S9.

See what we think about the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in our hands-on experience, and tell us which of the two devices and color/storage variant you’re looking to pick up once they go on sale in your country.

Galaxy S9 AR Emoji explained: how to create and use them

The Galaxy S9 AR Emoji feature was rumored to be “more advanced” than Animoji on the iPhone X and that does appear to be the case. While Animoji simply brings existing emoji to life with your voice and facial movements, the Galaxy S9 AR Emoji actually create a likeness of your face which can then be shared via messaging apps and what not.

Here’s a short explanation of the AR Emoji feature of the Galaxy S9 as well as the steps that you need to follow in order to create and use them on your new Samsung flagship.

Galaxy S9 AR Emoji

The Galaxy S9 AR Emoji feature works by creating an animated digital likeness of your face which can then be used to record your facial expressions. At first glance, they appear to be similar to Bitmoji characters, only better. The feature creates an avatar of you and allows you to tweak details like skin tone, hair, glasses, clothes, and more.

The handset will use the likeness to create a set of 18 animated stickers that can be used in third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. This allows users to share the AR Emoji even with friends that are on different platforms.

Those who don’t want to use their own face for this can use the face of Mickey Mouse instead. Samsung has teamed up with Disney to let you use this feature with characters like The Incredibles and Mickey Mouse.

How to create and use Galaxy S9 AR Emoji

You start by launching the camera app and then tap on the AR Emoji mode up top. Take a picture of your face much like you would take a selfie and the AR Emoji feature will automatically detect key data points such as your eyes, mouth, nose etc to create a digital version of you. The version that it creates may not look like you initially but the aforementioned options can be used to tweak it to perfection.

Once you have created a digital version of yourself, simply use the front-facing camera on the Galaxy S9 to record your voice and facial expressions before sending the animation to your friends and family.

The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ are the only devices that come with the AR Emoji feature built into the camera app. Samsung is yet to confirm if this feature will make its way to other devices. We can expect that it will do that eventually given the fact that it really only relies on the front-facing camera and no additional hardware like 3D depth sensors.

What do you think about the Galaxy S9 AR Emoji feature? Do you see yourself using it often or would it be just a novelty that wears off? Let us know in the comments below.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ get improved biometric security features

Samsung has finally announced the much-anticipated Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at a special event in Barcelona today. Along with many new bells and whistles, the S9 duo also come with improved security features for authentication and data access.

Samsung introduced the Iris scanning authentication system first in its ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. The feature later made its way into the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8 and has been further improved on the Galaxy S9. Iris scanning in the Galaxy S9 series has been improved to identify iris patterns from greater distances. This should theoretically make the process of unlocking through iris scanning a little less awkward.

Intelligent scan combines Iris scanning and facial recognition

The facial recognition technology introduced in the Galaxy S8 is also further improved in the Galaxy S9 duo. The new advanced facial recognition technology utilizes more data to recognize users’ distinct facial features from different angles.

Furthermore, Samsung has combined iris scanning, facial recognition and intelligent technologies to create a new seamless deep learning-based biometric authentication system called Intelligent Scan. This new authentication system uses the collective strength of the Galaxy S9’s iris scanning and facial recognition features to allow users to authenticate with a simple glance.

Intelligent Scan analyses your face’s visible features, surrounding lighting conditions, and determines the ideal authentication method to unlock the device. In simple words, it’s an intelligent authentication system which automatically chooses between facial recognition and iris can depending on the environment. This multimodal approach ensures successful authentication in a variety of surroundings. The combination of the two different solutions should also help users authenticate easily even when a piece of clothing or accessory is obstructing a part of the face. Samsung plans to integrate its Intelligent Scan feature into various applications beginning with Samsung Pass.

Finally, the Galaxy S9 also brings new features to the tried and tested fingerprint authentication. Apart from making the fingerprint reader location more convenient, the Galaxy S9 also allows users to register fingerprints with a single swipe. Samsung has also added a new feature to assign a dedicated fingerprint to access Secure Folder. When the user unlocks the device with this dedicated fingerprint, the Galaxy S9 takes the user directly to the contents of the Secure Folder.

New DeX Pad brings more than just design improvements

It was first reported several months ago that Samsung will launch a new accessory called the DeX Pad alongside the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. It’s the successor to last year’s DeX Station which aimed to provide a PC-like functionality with the Galaxy S8.

Sure enough, Samsung unveiled the DeX Pad today alongside the Galaxy S9, and while at first glance it might seem that only the design is different, there’s actually more here than meets the eye.

New DeX Pad

The DeX Station worked surprisingly well in powering a PC-like experience with the Galaxy S8. It had a sliding mechanism that enabled the device to fit in but Samsung has done away with that in favor of a flat design. The Galaxy S9 rests on top of the DeX Pad and while that might seem like a step backward in design, there’s actually a reason behind this change.

You couldn’t really get proper use out of the DeX Station unless you had a wireless keyboard and mouse. Even if you had access to an external monitor, you needed the peripherals to actually get any work done. That’s not the case with the DeX Pad because it brings the phone’s display as close as possible to the surface thus allowing you to use it as a trackpad and even a keyboard.

The predecessor couldn’t drive higher resolution displays because the max resolution for a connected screen was capped at 1080p. That’s no longer the case with the DeX Pad which can drive external displays with a resolution of up to 2560×1440. Gaming with the Galaxy S9 on DeX just got a whole lot better.

Connectivity options are more or less the same with the two full USB ports and a USB Type-C port being retained alongside an HDMI out. However, the ethernet port that was present in the DeX Station has been removed from the DeX Pad.

Samsung is yet to confirm how much the DeX Pad is going to cost but given that its predecessor cost around $100, we can expect it to cost about the same.

[Poll] Galaxy S9 vs Galaxy S9+: Which device would you want?

This year, there’s noticeable difference between the smaller and larger versions of Samsung’s new flagships as far as the specs and feature list are concerned. The Galaxy S9+ gets dual rear cameras and 6GB of RAM, two important features that the Galaxy S9 misses out on, making it much less of an upgrade over the Galaxy S8 compared to the S9+.

That’s not to say the Galaxy S9 doesn’t come with features not seen before on a Samsung flagship. Both models come with stereo speakers, something consumers have long demanded, a rear camera capable of shooting at different apertures and recording “super” slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second, and the ability to create emojis based on the user’s face and expressions.

Features carried forward from last year include the beautiful Super AMOLED Infinity displays, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, IP68 water and dust resistance, iris and facial recognition (which now work together), Bluetooth 5.0, and at least 64GB of internal storage. The battery sizes haven’t changed, but the Exynos 9810/Snapdragon 845 SoC powering the S9 and S9+ are more efficient; Android 8.0 Oreo is more efficient than Nougat as well, which means we can expect to see some improvement in battery life compared to the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Galaxy S9 vs Galaxy S9+: Which one do you like?

But, again, the Galaxy S9 misses out on two major features, which means the decision isn’t solely going to rest on whether you need a compact smartphone. Yes, a full review is needed before anyone can decide which of the Galaxy S9 duo they would want to purchase, but at the moment, which handset would you want to pick up?

Vote in the poll below to let us know, and also leave a comment to tell us why you’d pick one over the other. Of course, if neither the S9 or S9+ have impressed you, let us know your thoughts on that as well!

Watch the Galaxy S9 Super Slow-mo feature in action [Video]

The Galaxy S9 may not be that big of an upgrade in the design department but the handset does come with a set of new software features that hope to justify the high cost of purchase for new customers. The ability to shoot “Super Slow-mo” video happens to be one of those features. We’ve made a short video showing the Galaxy S9 Super Slow-mo feature in action.

Galaxy S9 Super Slow-mo feature

As the reports had predicted, the Galaxy S9 has a Super Slow-mo feature that’s capable of recording footage at an incredible 960 frames-per-second in HD resolution. If that wasn’t enough, Samsung has also added a manual method of capturing slow-mo video so users can really tweak how they want the footage to be captured.

The manual slow-mo capture functionality lets users define a space in the frame with a square box in the viewfinder. It’s only when the square box picks up movement is the slow-mo feature enabled. This results in more dramatic slow-mo videos which is really what this feature is all about.

The Galaxy S9 Super Slow-mo feature also lets users play their clip backward after it has been captured. They can even export it has a GIF which can then be easily shared online and via messaging apps.

Check out the short video below to get a sense of how the Galaxy S9 Super Slow-mo feature works.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ support 400 GB microSD cards

With 64GB of minimum internal storage on Samsung’s flagship smartphones, and even on some of the company’s budget phones, expandable storage is no longer as important as it used to be. Cloud services have also helped take some of the burden off physical storage, especially for those who have access to high-speed internet. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will also come in 128GB and 256GB models, but for consumers who will not have access to the higher storage variants, Samsung has given expandable storage support a boost on its newest flagships.

Galaxy S9 and S9+ support 400 GB microSD cards

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ support microSD cards of up to 400GB, instead of just 256GB as we’ve seen until now. 400GB microSD cards haven’t been on the market for long and are also quite costly at the moment, but with the increased video recording capabilities of smartphones (not to mention support for 960 fps slow-motion videos), some consumers will need all the storage they can get. With the S9 and S9+, Samsung is making sure its latest phones are ready for the future, and again, it will be a boon for consumers in countries where the Korean giant will only be offering the base model with 64GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress today with features such as a single/dual rear camera(s) with variable aperture and AR Emoji, AKG-tuned stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and up to 6GB of RAM (on the S9+). The Infinity displays have carried forward from the S8 and S8+, and the phones run Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.0 out of the box. Features such as IP68 water resistance and iris and facial recognition are on-board as well; the new Intelligent Scan feature combines iris and facial recognition for faster unlocking of the device.

Galaxy S9 can be unlocked using iris and facial recognition at the same time

One of our primary complaints with how biometrics work on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ (and also the Note 8) was that Samsung didn’t let us use facial recognition as a backup for when the iris scanner failed. The same is true for the iris scanner acting as a fail-safe for when facial recognition doesn’t work; basically, the two can’t be enabled at the same time, a limitation that carried forward with the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the S8 and S8+. With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, Samsung has finally removed that limitation with a new feature called Intelligent Scan.

Iris and facial recognition work in tandem on the Galaxy S9

We haven’t been able to test it out yet, but the gist is simple: Intelligent Scan uses the iris scanner and facial recognition at the same time to quickly unlock the device in different lighting conditions. It should help primarily under harsh sunlight and in the dark, where the iris scanner and facial recognition – respectively – often fail to work. For those who’ve found iris and facial scanning too slow, Intelligent Scan should make things much better. Again, we’ve not been able to test this, and we’re not sure if Intelligent Scan will require both our eyes and face to be recognized in order to work.

It also remains to be seen if Intelligent Scan will make its way to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. We inquired with a Samsung representative about the same and were told that nothing is confirmed at this point. Getting it to work on existing devices probably isn’t going to be an issue, and judging by the Korean giant’s tendency to aim for software consistency across its flagships these days, we’re certainly hopeful we’ll be able to use iris and facial recognition in tandem on the S8 or Note 8 at some point in the near future.

Keeping in line with its mantra of “reimagining the phone,” Samsung today revealed during its Galaxy S9 launch event that the new handset’s home screen supports landscape orientation natively. This will enable users to multi-task on the handset easily without having to manually change the handset’s orientation every single time.

Galaxy S9 home screen tweaked

Samsung has tweaked the user interface on the Galaxy S9 to make it easier for users to do more without having to interrupt what they’re doing. The notifications UI has been tweaked so that users can respond to a message without having to interrupt the video that they’re watching.

With the screen real estate that it offers, it’s a shame that this feature wasn’t offered before, but Samsung is making amends with the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+.

The new flagship’s home screen supports horizontal orientation natively so users won’t have to keep flipping their phone around when switching between apps that use the two different modes. This is going to be particularly useful for power users who tend to have multiple apps running simultaneously.

How to take a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S9

For those who are wondering how to take a screenshot on the Galaxy S9, the process isn’t all that different than it was on the Galaxy S8. Those who picked up last year’s flagship were confused at first about how they could take a screenshot given that the handset didn’t have a traditional hard home button. The Galaxy S9 doesn’t have a hard home button as well but the process of taking a screenshot on the Galaxy S9 is similar to how it is on its predecessor.

The home button’s job was done by the volume key on the Galaxy S8 and that’s just how it is on the Galaxy S9 as well. There are other ways of taking a screenshot as well which have been detailed in this guide about how to take a screenshot on the Galaxy S9.

How to take a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S9

Method 1: Volume + Power key combination

  1. Open up whatever you want to take a screenshot of on the display, be it an app, game, webpage, picture, etc.
  2. Simply press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously until the camera shutter sound is played and you see an animation. This provides you with both an audio and visual cue to let you know that the device has captured a screenshot.

Method 2: Palm Swipe

  1. You can take a screenshot on the Galaxy S9 using a simple gesture as well. Just swipe the screen with the edge of your hand from right to left or left to right to capture a screenshot. You’ll get the aforementioned audio and visual cues as well.
  2. This gesture can be enabled from the Settings » Advanced features menu. Navigate to the menu and toggle the “Palm swipe to capture” option to on.

Method 3: Bixby

  1. This is perhaps the most simple way of taking a screenshot on the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. Wake up Bixby by saying “Hi, Bixby” to activate the assistant by pressing the dedicated Bixby key.
  2. Simply ask Bixby to “Take a screenshot” and it will happily oblige.

Smart Capture and Scroll Capture

The device will offer multiple functions, such as sharing or editing the screenshot, once you have taken the screenshot. The options include Draw, Crop and Share and they’re displayed at the bottom of the screen. There’s also an option called “Scroll Capture”. If you don’t see these options once you take a screenshot navigate to the Settings » Advanced features menu and enable Smart Capture.

Scroll Capture is a very useful feature that lets you capture a screenshot of more than just what’s on your screen in a single image. It can be used to capture an entire webpage or a long list in some app. Here’s how you use the Scroll Capture feature:

  1. Follow either one of the methods mentioned above to capture a screenshot on the Galaxy S9. Keep in mind that this feature only works if there is some content below what you’re trying to capture.
  2. The Scroll Capture option should appear at the bottom of the screen now. Tap this button, and the phone will scroll down and capture more content.
  3. You can either stop at this point by tapping somewhere on the screen to save it or keep tapping the Scroll Capture button until you have got what you need or there’s no more content left to screenshot.

Now that you know how to take a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S9, keep in mind that they’re all saved in the Screenshots folder in the Albums tab of the gallery. If you’re viewing the Pictures tab then they will be displayed alongside your camera photos. You can also access them using the native file manager by opening the internal storage and navigating to the the DCIM folder where you’ll find the Screenshots folder.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ vs. Galaxy S9/S9+

The Galaxy S9 vs Galaxy S8 comparison is one that a lot of Samsung fans will be making to ascertain whether or not it’s worth upgrading to the new flagship. After all, Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone is an evolutionary update compared to its predecessor, so those who had been holding out for a major design refresh probably won’t be happy too much.

That being said, to properly compare the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 we must look at the differences in specs, and there are quite a few of them. Check out the follow specs comparison of the Galaxy S8/S8+ vs Galaxy S9/S9+ in the table below.

Galaxy S8 vs Galaxy S9 specs comparison

The Galaxy S9 will deliver an improvement in performance courtesy of its Exynos 9810 chip. Early results show that it’s going to be an absolute ripper. Samsung will also use the Snapdragon 845 processor for the Galaxy S9/S9+ in some markets and some benchmark results suggest that there’s going to be a noticable performance difference in the Exynos and Snapdragon variants.

However, that can only truly be quantified once both variants are out in the market, so we’ll hear more about that in the future. For now, consider another major difference in this Galaxy S8 vs Galaxy S9 comparison: the dual camera. The Galaxy S9+ is the first handset in this series to feature a dual camera system at the back.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ hands-on

A few days ahead of Samsung’s Unpacked 2018 event, we were invited to a private session for a hands-on demo of the company’s latest flagships, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Samsung presented us with a few key facts about how consumers used their device in 2017: People around the world took 1.2 trillion photos that year and sent 5 billion emojis and 1 billion GIFs per day.

As a result, Samsung decided to make the following three pillars the basis for the ninth-generation Galaxy S flagships: Camera, Entertainment, and Connectivity. Let’s go into detail to see how the company went about making sure the Galaxy S9 and S9+ would impress when it comes to those pillars, but first, we’ll talk about the Galaxy S9’s design.

Galaxy S9 hands-on: Design

The first thing we noticed about the design is that Samsung has stepped up its game in terms of how premium the phones feel. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ feel better to hold than the Galaxy S8 and S8+; the devices are also heavier in the hands, thanks to the increased thickness of the metal rim. The metal rim has a matte finish now instead of the glossy finish we saw on the S8. The thickness of the glass has been increased as well, in an attempt to make the S9 duo less fragile compared to their predecessors. The bezel beneath the display is slightly smaller than the top bezel – this is not super noticeable, but it does mean that the bezels are less symmetrical this time around.

At the back, the fingerprint sensor has been positioned below the camera sensor for easier access. There are a few minor design changes as well. The iris scanner above the display is darker to make it blend in and almost invisible to the eyes, so you’ll mostly just see it when it’s in action. The speaker grill is now positioned on the left of the USB Type-C port and is one big cutout instead of having multiple small holes. The screen sizes, meanwhile, remain the same – 5.8 inches on the Galaxy S9 and 6.2 inches on the Galaxy S9+. The resolution is Quad HD+ (2960×1440), although both phones come with Full HD+ as the default resolution.

Camera

The primary rear camera on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ is a Super Speed Dual Pixel sensor with a Dual Aperture lens. Thanks to Dual Aperture, the camera can switch between an aperture of F1.5 and F2.4. According to Samsung, the S9 and S9+ capture 28 percent more light compared to the S8 and S8+. Noise is also lower by 30 percent in low-light conditions when the aperture is set to F1.5. When it’s too bright, the lens switches to F2.4 to take clearer photos that aren’t overexposed.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ can capture slow-motion video at 960 frames per second with the Super Slow-mo feature. There’s a dedicated mode that automatically detects motion in the frame and starts recording slow-motion video. The frame needs to be manually defined, much like the rear-cam selfie mode on Samsung phones, but once the user has set things up, slow-motion video is recorded every time the camera detects movement. These slow-motion videos can be shared as video or animated GIF files and can also be set as the lock screen wallpaper. However, the length of these wallpapers is limited to 15 seconds.

The camera on the S9 duo also features an improved dedicated image processor that is four times faster than the one used on the Galaxy S8. The image processor has a dedicated piece of DRAM memory reserved for its operations, and the camera can directly send data to this processor for faster and more fluid camera interactions. The camera also combines up to 12 frames to capture a single photo, ensuring the highest quality possible.

AR Emoji is the other major camera feature introduced with the Galaxy S9. It’s similar to Animoji seen on the Apple iPhone X and allows you to create a set of custom emojis that look, sound, and act like you. These emojis work in almost all apps and can be shared just like regular emojis. Look for a separate post on how AR Emoji work in practice.

Bixby Vision is also getting new functionality. These include Bixby Live Translation, Bixby Locations, and Bixby Food. Live Translation can instantly translate foreign language and currency in real-time. Bixby Locations supplies you with pointers on all kinds of Points-of-Interest (POI) around you in the real world. Bixby Food is for the health freaks and will tell you the name of a dish and the calories it contains. This information can then be added to S Health so you can keep track of your daily intake.

Entertainment

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ fix a major complaint that consumers have had about Samsung flagships for years by introducing stereo speakers. These speakers are tuned by AKG and are 1.4 times louder than the single speaker on the Galaxy S8. During our hands-on, Samsung showed us a few videos demonstrating the Dolby Atmos sound system, which gives the effect of 360-degree sound. We were positively surprised by the result; the stereo speakers sound a lot less flat compared to the Galaxy S8 loudspeaker.

Wondering where the second speaker is located? Well, it’s integrated into the earpiece, an implementation that is common on phones from other manufacturers. The AKG-tuned earphones are also part of the package, just as they were with the 2017 flagships. The new phones obviously feature the Super AMOLED Infinity displays seen on the S8 and S8+ as well. Samsung has added adaptive contrast management, allowing higher contrast in direct sunlight, where it is needed most. Last but not the least, these phones are powered by the latest Exynos/Snapdragon processor, and the Galaxy S9+ gets 6GB of RAM, so you can also expect a top-notch gaming experience that’s enhanced by the stereo speakers.

Connectivity

Last year, Samsung introduced the DeX Station, which allows one to dock the phone and connect it to an external display, mouse, keyboard, and even an Ethernet cable. The second iteration of DeX is the DeX Pad. Since the DeX Pad lays down the device flat, the phone’s display can be used as a touchpad or keyboard, removing the need to carry external keyboards and mice. It also enables you to use the headphone jack and speaker when the S9 or S9+ is docked. For those who will use their S9 or S9+ as a word device, Samsung has added a customized DeX mode that would, for example, only allow editing of documents and other functions your company permits, disabling things such as gaming or social network apps. The enterprise mode is protected by Knox 3.1, Samsung’s latest defense-grade mobile security platform.

Interface

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, which isn’t the latest version. That would be Android 8.1, but as we all know, Samsung doesn’t care about particular versions that much, but the security and features from 8.1 are included. However, Samsung doesn’t seem to be using Project Treble; we can’t confirm this right now, but not having Project Treble would be a major slap in the face for Google’s efforts to make Android updates a less time-consuming affair. As far as the user interface is concerned, the S9 and S9+ have Samsung Experience 9.0 with the same interface that Samsung has been pushing to the Galaxy S8 with the Oreo update.

Other features

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, and they also come with support for 400 GB microSD cards. Iris and facial recognition finally work in tandem for faster unlocking and authentication with a feature called Intelligent Scan. It’s something we’ve longed for since the Galaxy S8 was released, and fingers crossed it will also be enabled on the S8 and S8+ with a software update. Oh, and Samsung will also be launching 128GB and 256GB storage variants, although availability details on those aren’t available at the moment.

That’s about it for our hands-on experience of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Are these devices amazing? They sure seem to be, although Galaxy S8 and S8+ owners probably wouldn’t gain much by upgrading. Photography is the major highlight here, and if you care about getting the best photos, the S9 and S9+ have camera specs Samsung can proudly boast about. Of course, it’s too early to come to a conclusion, so look forward to our full review of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in the coming weeks.
