Samsung’s 8K TVs will offer compatibility with advanced multi-channel audio

Samsung had unveiled 8K QLED TVs last year, and the company is expected to expand its lineup in 2021. The South Korean firm is rumored to unveil new 8K TVs at its The First Look and CES 2021 events in the coming days. The company has now announced that its TVs will qualify for updated specs from 8K Association.

The 8K Association has recently updated the requirements for TVs to receive the ‘8KA Certified’ logo. Apart from the existing requirements for resolution, luminance, color, and connectivity standards, 8K TVs are now required to offer compatibility with a broader set of video decoding standards and advanced multi-dimensional surround sound for a truly immersive experience.

Dan Schinasi, Director of Product Planning at Samsung Electronics America, said, “With the 8K Association’s support in promoting standards that include audio-video performance and interface standards, we expect that more homes will choose 8K TVs and more 8K content will be soon available in those homes in the year ahead, offering an exceptional home theater experience.

The 8K Association includes TV brands, cinemas, studios, panel makers, processor brands, and others. Needless to say, Samsung and Samsung Display are principal members of the board. 8KA is planning to promote the 8K ecosystem’s growth by educating content creators on the benefits of capturing, producing, and distributing 8K content.

Samsung’s OLED screens for laptops offer superior image quality

Samsung is the leader of the small-sized OLED panel market, but it had refrained from making large-sized OLED panels for devices like laptops and TVs until recently. The South Korean tech giant has now unveiled OLED screens for laptops with the promise of offering superior image quality.

The company published a new video on YouTube, teasing the most important qualities of Samsung OLED screens for laptops. Samsung Display claims that its new screens offer cinematic and ultrapure color, and all the other advantages of OLED screens such as deep blacks (0.0005 nits), high contrast ratio (1,000,000:1), and excellent visibility under direct sunlight.

The company’s OLED screens for laptops also offer 120% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and 85% HDR coverage. The company is promising to offer excellent bright highlights and details in dark scenes. Samsung is expected to offer more details about its OLED screens for laptops in its The First Look event tomorrow.

Samsung has already unveiled its 2021 laptop lineup, but not of those products use OLED screens. However, the company could launch more laptops later in the year with OLED screens. Samsung Display could also supply these screens to other laptop makers such as ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

Newly leaked Galaxy S21 camera infographics tell a more complete story

Another Galaxy S21 leak is here and this probably doesn’t surprise anyone. After all, the Galaxy S21 is one of the most extensively-leaked smartphones in recent times, though this description could probably fit any of Samsung’s flagship phones that were released over the past few years.

The new leak, courtesy of @evleaks via Voice, comes in as a series of official infographics detailing key camera specifications. Many details were leaked before and virtually everyone should already be aware of how many camera modules each Galaxy S21 variant will carry on its back.

Here are a few new and exciting One UI 3.1 features caught on camera

Samsung is in the process of bringing One UI 3.0 to more existing Galaxy smartphone models but the company also has a newer version, One UI 3.1, baking in the oven specifically for the upcoming Galaxy S21 series. You’re probably well aware of this but, even so, we haven’t seen One UI 3.1 in action first-hand yet and given the intensity of leaks in recent weeks, you may have missed out on some of the upcoming features.

If you’re looking for a more complete overview of One UI 3.1 and the new features it brings before January 14 – who isn’t? – then this new YouTube video posted by Jimmy is Promo today might do the trick. It previews features such as call background video, the ability to use Google Discover instead of Samsung Free and more.

Focus enhancer and simultaneous rear/front video recording

A few camera features added with One UI 3.1 are also briefly showcased in the video. There’s a new Focus enhancer, though it’s unclear whether this will be available across the entire Galaxy S21 range or if it will be reserved for the Galaxy S21 Ultra since it’s the only model of the three to boast laser autofocus.

In addition, the video also reveals a new features that lets users record videos with the rear and front-facing cameras simultaneously. You may have heard of this addition before but now you can see it in action.

The existing blue light filter also appears to have been overhauled, or at least renamed and given a couple more features. It’s now called Eye comfort shield and it lets you choose between adaptive and custom blue light dimming. Check the full video below for a more complete preview of One UI 3.1.

Hey Samsung, follow SamMobile to put your customers first!

2021 will be an important year for Samsung as the tech giant wants to adapt to market changes, continue pushing its limits in the semiconductor space, and ultimately become a company that puts customers first. This was outright confirmed by Vice Chairman and CEO Kim Ki-nan earlier today during the company’s New Year’s online ceremony.

SamMobile is fully supporting Samsung’s new philosophy of putting customers first and we truly hope that the company succeeds in its quest. We don’t know exactly how Samsung will try to achieve this, logistics-wise, but we’re of the opinion that the company’s chances of succeeding will be exponentially higher if its employees would follow SamMobile’s social media pages for input from fans of the brand. Our LinkedIn page, for example, can tell you more about us and our vision, while our Twitter / Instagram / Facebook pages offer quick access to our news feed and unique content including positive opinions and well-intended criticism.

Now, back to reality before a few of our readers grab their pitchforks and get riled up the comment section. Obviously, we’re overstating SamMobile’s importance in Samsung’s own evolution, but jokes aside, we really do believe that Samsung needs a more direct and open line of communication with its fanbase if it wants to succeed in its quest to become a much more customer-friendly enterprise. And we’re not referring to the official community forums where customers usually bring bugs to Samsung’s attention, but a more direct line with those dedicated Samsung fans who could really help steer the company in the right direction. We’re fairly certain that many SamMobile readers could happily provide exactly that.

Would you have any advice for Samsung Electronics moving forward? Do you feel like you, as a customer, are Samsung’s main priority? And if the answer is negative then what would it take for you to change your stance? Do you think Samsung employees should spend more time interacting with the customer base and learning from their day-to-day experiences using Samsung products, or should Samsung follow its heart and vision regardless of how customers respond? Join us in the comment section.

Samsung execs want to create a new legend in the SoC market

As you’re probably aware, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and CEO Kim Ki-nan spoke about the company’s vision for 2021 earlier today, detailing some of the key changes Samsung has to commit to in order to prepare for the future. In short, Samsung wants to become a company that puts customers at the very center.

But beyond the customer side of things, Samsung also vowed to actively respond to social demand for prevention of industrial accidents. And according to reports from the local media, both Kim Ki-nan and chairman Lee Jae-yong together with a number of other high-ranking executives have visited the Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant in the Gyeonggi Province on the first working day of 2021.

Taking a leap towards a new Samsung in 2021

The executives have reportedly visited the P2 line where mass production of 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM began in August. They have also toured the construction site for the P3 plant that’s poised to become a total semiconductor factory before 2022.

The executives have attended a ceremony where new foundry equipment was brought in, as seen in the featured image above. The scion also discussed mid and long-term semiconductor plans with top executives, and one of the main topics of conversation was the installation of additional extreme litography equipment.

The Vice Chairman’s visit to Pyeongtaek reflects Samsung’s high ambitions in the semiconductor space. The scion reportedly wants the chipmaking unit to take a leap towards a new Samsung in 2021 and to make a new legend in the system-on-system chip market.

This year Samsung wants to become a company that puts customers first

Many key Samsung executives have reportedly attended the company’s New Year’s online opening ceremony earlier today where Vice Chairman and CEO Kim Ki-nan has underlined Samsung’s philosophy moving forward. 2020 was an erratic year that marked drastic changes in the social and economic fabric, and according to the Vice Chairman, 2021 should be the first year to respond to changes and prepare for the future.

So what does this mean, exactly? Well, according to Mr. Kim Ki-nan, Samsung should transform into a creative company where challenge and innovation lives and breathes. The focus moving forward should be on becoming a company that puts customers at the very center and enhances customer experience and customer value.

Succeeding in 2021 might be the key to Samsung’s long-term plans

These statements concern Samsung Electronics as a whole and not just the mobile segment. For Samsung to adapt to the so-called New Normal and come out on top, the company has to make a few fundamental changes in 2021 and continue building upon its relationships with partners, local communities, and even the next generation, all the while actively responding to social demands.

Samsung claiming that 2021 will be the first year to respond to changes doesn’t mean that the company sat idly until now. Samsung was quick to respond to the market changes last year and the company was deeply involved with fighting back against the spread of COVID-19. The company has helped mask manufacturers increase their production capacity by lending its smart factory expertise, and it has donated dozens of millions of dollars to organizations fighting against the pandemic.

Galaxy S21 pre-orders could be paired with freebies worth over $200

Offline pre-bookings for the Galaxy S21 series were reportedly opened in India nearly a month ago for customers who were willing to pay a reservation fee of around $27, but no additional information regarding the final price tag and pre-order incentives were revealed last month. Now, a new report has seemingly revealed that customers who plan to go through with the pre-order process will indeed benefit from a few freebies, such as a pair of wireless earbuds and the new Smart Tag that should be unveiled at Unpacked on January 14.

More precisely, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ pre-orders will be paired with the aforementioned Smart Tag and the Galaxy Buds Live for free. The top-tier Galaxy S21 Ultra will apparently be offered on pre-order terms along with the Smart Tag and the upcoming Galaxy Buds Pro.

These pre-order incentive will be available in select markets

Even though customers in India have had a head start in the race for acquiring the Galaxy S21 flagship series, it remains unclear whether or not these attractive freebies will be offered in the country. According to the source, the Smart Tag and Galaxy Buds pre-order incentives will be valid for Galaxy S21 customers in select European and international markets. Samsung may have prepared other freebies for different regions and we’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more.

Based on preliminary information, the Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds might hit the shelves for around $230, whereas the Smart Tag is likely to be available for roughly $15.

January 2021 security update reaches Galaxy S20 in the U.S.

The newest security patch for the Galaxy S20 series – dated January 1st, 2021 – started reaching the Snapdragon models from Samsung’s flagship series. The rollout began on Sunday, encompassing the unlocked variants of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. This particular security release carries version number G98xU1UES1CTL5.

Sprint and T-Mobile’s customers also started receiving the latest security update. This type of over-the-air deployments usually takes a while to complete in order to mitigate the potential strain on a given carrier’s network infrastructure.

January 2021 patch likely to hit many more devices in the coming days

With that said, there are ways to speed things up. First of all, try triggering the installation manually by opening your device Settings, tapping Software update, and selecting the Download and install option on the next screen. If that doesn’t work and you have the know-how, you can then simply download the full system images from our firmware archives in order to flash them onto your device. Just don’t forget to back up your Galaxy S20-series smartphone beforehand.

The January 2021 security patch already started hitting select Galaxy S9-series devices, though we’re still waiting for an official changelog bulletin for the new patch from Samsung. The rest of the company’s 2020 and 2019 flagships are likely to begin receiving it in the coming days, as well.

And by the time the February security update emerges, we should already be able to buy one of the direct follow-ups to the Galaxy S20 line. As Samsung is pretty much confirmed to be rushing the new flagship series this year.

Early Galaxy Buds Pro hands-on video finds noise cancellation poorer than AirPods Pro

The Galaxy Buds Pro are already on sale on social media, and it seems there isn’t just one pair of them out in the wild. Today, an early unboxing and hands-on video of the Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds has been published on the Digital Slang channel on YouTube and gives us the rundown on many of the new earbuds’ features. Most importantly, it talks about the quality of active noise cancellation, or rather, how it’s “good but not as impressive as it is on the AirPods Pro.”

Of course, one person’s opinion isn’t enough for a proper conclusion, so we will have to wait to test the Buds Pro ourselves to see just how good or bad noise cancellation is on the new earbuds. The in-ear design of Samsung’s previous Galaxy Buds iterations already offered a high degree of noise cancellation out of the box, and we can imagine even a little extra boost with the addition of official ANC support will make most customers happy.

The Ambient sound feature has seemingly been improved, and sound quality is said to be fantastic, with “clear mids and highs and punchy bass.” You can check out the full unboxing by hitting the Play button in the embedded YouTube video below. Naturally, we’ll have our own review and hands-on experience for you once the Galaxy Buds Pro go official on January 14th, so stay tuned!

Galaxy S21 Ultra S Pen leaks along with its price tag, holster cover

The new S Pen set to be available as an optional extra for the Galaxy S21 Ultra just leaked in a set of renders which also reveal an optional holster case Samsung reportedly designed for the occasion. These images, procured by WinFuture, confirm that the stylus meant to be used alongside the company’s next flagship won’t have a clickable end. This is hardly surprising, seeing how the new S Pen isn’t meant to be stored inside the Galaxy S21 Ultra itself.

Instead, Samsung intends to offer at least one new protective case with a dedicated holster for securing the stylus. This accessory is also part of today’s leak.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra S Pen will be pretty cheap compared to the actual smartphone

As for the S Pen compatible with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the gadget will set you back around €40 ($50), the same source claims. That’s a minuscule commitment compared to the price of the smartphone, itself. For added reference, recent reports suggested the top model from Samsung’s next flagship family will have an eye-watering price. The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ aren’t expected to feature S Pen support.

The new S Pen appears to be similar to the one sold alongside the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+. From a functional standpoint, the stylus isn’t expected to be any different from the one used by the Galaxy Note 20 series.

Samsung is scheduled to officially announce its next high-end smartphone range on January 14th. Following that, the Galaxy S21 family is expected to hit the store shelves worldwide near the end of the month.

Updated: Everything you can expect from the Galaxy S21 flagship lineup

It’s difficult to believe that the Galaxy S21 series is weeks away from release but it is true, at least according to all the credible reports, including our own, hinting at a mid-January launch event. The series has already been leaked and rumored extensively so we have a fairly good idea on what to expect next month.

A refreshed design, an updated One UI version and better performance are all par for the course, as is the case every year with each new generation of Galaxy flagships. But the nitty-gritty of how Samsung will improve the formula next year is what counts the most. It will make the difference between an iterative update and an innovative product. Time will tell to which category the Galaxy S21 series belongs, but until Samsung spills the beans officially, here’s all we have learned about the lineup so far through less official means.

Galaxy S21 series design

Samsung is once again redefining its flagships’ design language and is bringing a new range of colors to mark the occasion. The base Galaxy S21 variant is said to gain inspiration from the Galaxy Note 20 and sport a plastic back instead of a glass finish. The Galaxy S21+ might also be wrapped in plastic though this detail is unclear as of this writing, but the Galaxy S21 Ultra should enjoy more premium materials.

The biggest change in design consists of a new camera housing for all three models. This design element continues to be the focal point of the back panel but the housing has a more streamlined design and is flushed against the side and top edges of the phone.

Samsung’s new range of colors for the Galaxy S21 series has the ‘Phantom’ designation and the base model will be available in Phantom Pink, Violet, Gray, and White. The Galaxy S21+ will launch in Phantom Violet, Black, and Silver, whereas the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be available in Phantom Black and Silver, though additional color options could be added to the top-tier model later down the line.

Galaxy S21 series display

One of the biggest and unexpected changes to the Galaxy S21 series might come in the form of S Pen support. Several rumors have suggested that the Galaxy S21 lineup, or at least the Galaxy S21 Ultra, will support the S Pen, even though it won’t ship with one or have a dedicated slot akin to the Galaxy Note series.

The Galaxy S21 should carry a 6.2-inch display. The S21+ model will reportedly have a 6.7-inch panel, and they should both have FHD+ resolutions. The Galaxy S21 Ultra, on the other hand, is said to feature a 6.8-inch panel with a higher WQHD+ pixel count.

All three models are also expected to support a high refresh rate of 120Hz, but oddly enough, only the top-tier variant might benefit from adaptive refresh rate. The panels should have an improved contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 and a peak brightness of 1600 nits.

Galaxy S21 series internal hardware

The Galaxy S21 series will be powered by a new generation of chipsets. The flagship trio is expected to employ the Snapdragon 888 chipset in markets such as the USA, South Korea, and China, whereas the global variant will rely on the brand-new Exynos 2100 SoC. Samsung’s next-gen solution has yet to be officially unveiled but it will be introduced on December 15. It should feature a new high-performance Cortex-X1 CPU core, three Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. Graphics will be handled by a Mali-G78 graphics chip.

On the Qualcomm side, the Galaxy S21 series will benefit from the Snapdragon 888 chipset. It incorporates the Snapdragon X60 5G modem and it promises up to 25% CPU performance improvements and up to 35% faster graphics rendering compared to the Snapdragon 865.

Regardless of the chipset’s make and origin, the base Galaxy S21 model is likely to ship with 8GB of RAM, though 12GB options might also be available. The Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra could ship with 12GB of RAM as standard.

As for batteries, a few certificates from regulatory agencies have emerged months ago, revealing that the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra will be powered by batteries with capacities of 4,000mAh, 4,800mAh, and 5,000mAh, respectively. There may not be chargers in the box in some markets, however.

Galaxy S21 series cameras

Samsung might be focusing a lot more energy in making the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera system excel. That’s not to say the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ will let us down, but they won’t benefit from the same advanced camera features as the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ should share the exact same main camera characteristics. They should carry 12MP primary and ultra-wide sensors as well as a third 64MP telephoto camera.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra should have a 108MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and two 10MP telephoto lenses featuring 3X and 10X optical zoom. A laser autofocus system is expected to be on-board as well, similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and the telephoto lenses are said to feature Dual Pixel autofocus for enhancing focusing.

Specifications pertaining to the selfie cameras are unknown but regardless, the sensor will be enclosed in an Infinity-O display cutout and it won’t be hidden behind the display.

Galaxy S21 series software and availability

The most recent One UI 3.0 firmware update is now available for the Galaxy S20 series and it will soon reach additional flagship models. But while Samsung was tinkering with the beta versions of One UI 3.0, the company was also developing One UI 3.1 behind the curtain.

One UI 3.1 will debut with the Galaxy S21 series but the firmware’s feature list has yet to be revealed. Samsung has successfully kept One UI 3.1 under wraps but one main feature that could define the experience is a new form of authentication through Bixby Voice.

All of these devices, features, and more should be unveiled by Samsung on January 14 at a virtual Galaxy S21 launch conference. The series is expected to go on sale on January 29. Time will tell how much the new flagships will cost but they might reflect the Galaxy S20 series’ launch prices. Other reports suggest that the series might get a hefty price cut over the Galaxy S20, with the base model said to be going on sale for anywhere between $849 and $899. We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as more Galaxy S21 details emerge.
