Samsung’s giant touchscreen-toting $5600 Family Hub refrigerator is now on sale

Samsung unveiled a Family Hub smart refrigerator with a giant touchscreen infotainment system during CES 2016. Users can not only keep a tab on their grocery stock, but also stream music using the company’s most high-end refrigerator. The company has now announced that it is now on sale in the US.

The Family Hub smart refrigerator is now on sale through home appliance stores across the US. The stainless steel model with a standard depth costs a whopping $5600 while the black stainless steel model with counter depth costs at $6000. As opposed to a run-of-the-mill $1000 refrigerator, the Family Hub smart fridge can be a menu planner, a media streaming device, a weather forecast information system, or a smart calendar. On top of that, it comes with three cameras that keep a snapshot of your grocery inside the refrigerator and send those images to a smartphone.

When users are running low on grocery, they can order it through MasterCard’s new Groceries app using the refrigerator’s 21.5-inch touchscreen system. Apart from coming integrated with Pandora, TuneIn, AllRecipes, Sticki, and Instacart, the smart refrigerator can mirror the company’s Smart TV or become a whiteboard. The company recently released a TV commercial for its Family Hub refrigerator featuring conversations between veggies and chocolate syrup.

Hardware specs of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Advanced leaks out

A couple of days ago, we talked about the Galaxy Tab 4 Advanced (SM-T536) possibly being the company’s next 10.1-inch tablet, courtesy of a benchmark listing. Well, it seems like the device is real after all with a German source now outing the hardware of this particular device.

As speculated, the device is sporting a 10.1-inch display, packing a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Further, it is revealed that the tablet will pack a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor, possibly the Exynos 5410. The tablet is also revealed to be packing 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (expandable by up to 128GB), a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. Rounding off the specs sheet is Android 6.0 Marshmallow and a 6,800 mAh battery.

The tablet is revealed to be just 7.9mm thick, which makes it a very compact device. At 487 grams, it’s not the bulkiest device either. Expect more word to follow on this tablet over the coming days.

Samsung clinches the top spot from Apple in the US smartphone market

Samsung seems to be doing all the right things all of a sudden. Its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, have become bestsellers around the world, so much so that the company has been able to clinch the top spot from Apple in the US smartphone market.

According to the numbers from Counterpoint Research’s latest report, Samsung became the largest smartphone brand in the US market with a market share of 28.8 percent during March while Apple ranked second with a market share of 23 percent. LG managed to claim the third spot on the podium with a market share of 17 percent.

According to Research Director Jeff Fieldhack, Samsung’s strategy to shift the launch of its flagship smartphones to early March helped the company. Even carriers and retailers wanted a product that could drive traffic to their stores since smartphone sales are traditionally slow during March.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge sold 30 percent more than their predecessors. Attractive offers such as the Gear VR bundled with each preorder as well as buy-one-get-one deals further increased sales. Slowing iPhone 6s sales also gave a boost to the sales of Samsung’s latest high-end smartphones.

Themes Thursday: Here are the five best themes from this week

Welcome back to Themes Thursday! Ever since Samsung started releasing third-party themes for its recently released Galaxy smartphones in its Theme Store, we’ve been bringing you some of the best themes from each week so that you don’t have to check out all the themes by yourself.

Samsung has released 62 new themes over the course of past one week, and we’ve selected five themes which we think might please you. The [FEIT] Banana theme is quite simplistic while the Flative theme has some really well-designed icons. If you like wallpapers and backgrounds with blur effect, the Oriental Lamp & MOH theme might interest you.

For someone who likes Samsung’s Tizen operating system, the Tizen UI theme might be a good choice. Which new theme did you like from this week? Also, you should check out our latest edition of Wallpaper Wednesday to find some good-looking wallpapers for your Galaxy device.

Galaxy Note 5 gets update with May security patch in India

Samsung is pushing out a sizeable update to the Galaxy Note 5 in India, bringing the security patches for the month of April to the phablet flagship soon after Samsung gave us official information on the same. At 359.77 MB, the lack of an informative changelog is surprising, suggesting the update includes a notable amount of bug fixes and stability improvements. The Galaxy Note 4 got a similar update in the country last week.

The update should have popped up on your Galaxy Note 5 already, but if it hasn’t, you should be able to grab it from the Settings » About device menu by hitting the Download updates manually button. You can also get the firmware from our firmware database. The build number is N920GDDU2BPD3, and we should be seeing the same update reaching other regions in the coming days.

Leaked Galaxy C5 pictures confirm metal body

We reported two weeks ago that Samsung had started firmware development for the Galaxy C5 (SM-C5000). This is going to be a new series of smartphones from Samsung with at least two models with different display sizes and we’ve already reported before that both will have thin metallic bodies. Pictures of the Galaxy C5 have leaked online today revealing that it does indeed come with a metal body.

It’s good that Samsung has gone for a metal body in a mid-range smartphone but we have to address the elephant in the room. It looks a lot like some of HTC’s recent smartphones from the back, the design happens to be quite similar and while there’s nothing wrong about that I think many would have preferred if Samsung went a different way with the design. As far as the specifications go, the Galaxy C5 is likely to feature a 5.2-inch Full HD display, an octa-core Snapdragon 617 processor with 4GB RAM, and we also see what appears to be a dual tone LED flash on the back. It’s going to come with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. China is going to be the launch market for the new Samsung Galaxy C series handsets and it’s unclear if and when these smartphones will be released in other markets.

Samsung’s own website leaks images of the Gear IconX and the Gear Fit 2

It was only last week that images of the Gear Fit 2 fitness band and the Gear IconX Bluetooth earbuds were leaked online. Samsung released the original Gear Fit some two years ago so it’s about time that it came out with a successor. The images we saw last week came from an unofficial source but now Samsung’s own website has leaked the images of the Gear Fit 2 and Gear IconX, hinting at an official announcement in the near future.

The images of both of these devices are up on Samsung S Health website even though the company is yet to officially announce the Gear Fit 2 and the Gear IconX. While the website doesn’t provide any information about these new devices, it’s believed that the Gear Fit 2 is going to be a big improvement over its predecessor with a 1.84-inch AMOLED display, 4GB internal memory, built-in GPS, water resistance and a host of fitness-related features. No word as yet on when Samsung plans to make an announcement.

Lens Cover for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge now available in some parts of Europe

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge were unveiled with an attractive Lens Cover accessory back in February. However, more than two months since the announcement, this particular accessory was nowhere to be found. That changes today with multiple Samsung online stores across Europe showing the Lens Cover in stock.

As of now, we can see the case listed in Samsung Netherlands, Germany, Spain etc and expect more regions to be added soon. Samsung UK’s site has the product listed, but it’s not available for purchase yet, while the aforementioned regions can buy the product right away.

The Lens Cover for both the handsets has been priced at €149.99 ($172), which makes it a pretty expensive affair. A Dutch retailer mentioned a similar pricing for the Lens Cover a couple of months ago. If you live in any of the European countries, make sure you visit your local Samsung.com website to check if the accessory is in stock.

Samsung rebrands its KICK application to Goal+ in the Play Store

In an effort to attract new users, Samsung has rebranded its KICK application to Goal+ in the Google Play Store. The app also received a minor visual overhaul, together with compatibility for a news-orientated edge panel; meaning Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy S7 edge owners will be able to stay up-to-date with all the latest soccer reports without having to unlock their device.

For those who have never heard of KICK before, let alone Goal+, it’s essentially a one-stop-shop for all die-hard football fans. The application provides users with instant access to a plethora of different statistics, including live scores, real-time match updates and transfer news. There’s also a nifty comparison feature on board, which enables them to compare players and teams from different leagues.

What’s more, Samsung has revealed that it will be introducing Goal+ support for the Gear S2 later this month — so users will be able to receive notifications on their wrist whenever there’s a major event in a game that they’ve marked as important. Stay tuned, though, as we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as this feature starts rolling out to the masses.
