Samsung’s Chinese market share expected to drop below 2 percent in Q4

Samsung’s share of the Chinese smartphone market will drop below 2 percent in the fourth quarter, according to Strategy Analytics. The firm ranked ninth in the People’s Republic, with a 2 percent share, in the third quarter—but that’s expected to drop to 1.6 percent by the time January arrives.

Believe it or not, Samsung was once a dominant player in China. Its market share peaked at 20 percent back in 2015, but the recent rise of more affordable smartphones from local competitors, including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, has resulted in it losing a significant number of customers.

“It seems almost impossible for Samsung to upend the Chinese smartphone market reorganized by local firms with quality products and affordable prices,” said Lee Byung-tae, a professor at KAIST College of Business.

“Since successful Chinese firms are expanding their presence in budget smartphone markets, Samsung and LG’s global presence will shrink further unless they secure competitiveness against Chinese firms.”

Samsung could have a solution

Samsung has cut around 20,000 jobs in China amid weak sales, reports The Korea Herald. The firm appears to have a solution, however: it’s appointed a new head of its Chinese unit, who could very well return it to its former position in the market. Whether that will happen though is anyone’s guess.

Galaxy S8+ October security patch released in India

We’re almost half done with November and Samsung has now started rolling out the October security patch for the Galaxy S8+ in India. Last week, Samsung rolled out this patch for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in its home country of South Korea.

The company recently detailed its November security patch and rolled out the first update today for the Galaxy A5 (2017). One can only imagine when it’s going to be released for the Galaxy S8+ in this market if the October patch is arriving just now.

Galaxy S8+ October security patch

Once Samsung releases Android 8.0 Oreo, this concern about security patches not arriving on time might fade away. That’s because by then everyone will just be waiting to find out when they’ll get a taste of Oreo.

Samsung has started rolling out firmware version G955FXXU1AQJ5 for the Galaxy S8+ in India. We’ve received this own our handset and it should be rolling out for the Galaxy S8 as well.

The update weighs in at 493MB and brings the October 2017 security patch. It also improves the stability of DeX mode and the launcher. The usual slew of performance improvements and bug fixes will also be on board.

The Galaxy S8+ October security patch is now rolling out over-the-air in India. We have the same firmware build available for download from our firmware section as well.

Samsung rolling out November security update to the Galaxy A5 (2017)

The Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2017) were the first Samsung devices to get an update with the October security patch, and it looks like at least the A5 (2017) is also the first to receive the November security patch. An update that includes the latest security fixes is rolling out to the A5 (2017) in the UAE, carrying firmware version A520FXXU2BQJ6.

Compared to the October security patch, there are considerably fewer vulnerabilities involved in the November patch, but it does bring a fix for the widespread Wi-Fi KRACK exploit. A total of 61 vulnerabilities in Android have been patched, in addition to six exploits that affect only Samsung devices (the same number of exploits were fixed in the October patch as well). A few of them have been detailed by Samsung, but as always, a few have also been kept under wraps to ensure they aren’t taken advantage of by hackers before the security patch reaches all devices.

If you own the Galaxy A5 (2017) and reside in the UAE, you can check if the latest update is available from the Settings » Software update menu. Alternatively, you can download the full firmware from our database and upgrade manually if waiting for the over-the-air update isn’t your thing. We’ll be sure to let you know once other Samsung devices start getting updated with the November security patch.

Samsung lists the Galaxy A5 (2018) on its website

Samsung is expected to unveil its new Galaxy A (2018) series in the near future. There have been a lot of reports recently about the Galaxy A5 (2018) and the Galaxy A7 (2018). A listing for the former has now been spotted on Samsung’s South Korean website.

The listing states the obvious, that Samsung has the Galaxy A5 (2018) in the pipeline. It doesn’t reveal anything about the device itself, though.

The Galaxy A5 (2018) will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7885 processor. The chip recently received its Bluetooth certification. It was thus revealed that the chip supports Bluetooth 5.0, making this the first mid-range Samsung handset to support the standard.

It was also confirmed recently that the Galaxy A5 (2018) is going to feature an Infinity Display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The handset won’t have a home button on the front and the fingerprint sensor might be relocated to the back.

The support page listing for the Galaxy A5 (2018) has been spotted on Samsung’s South Korean website. It mentions the model number SM-A530 which is what Samsung will use for the upcoming handset. Its predecessor, the Galaxy A5 (2017), has the model number SM-A520.

Samsung is yet to confirm when the new Galaxy A (2018) series is going to be launched. We can expect it to come out in January 2018.
