Galaxy J2 Pro (2018) manual available online; launch imminent?

The Galaxy J2 Pro (2018) looks close to an official launch, as the official user manual for the device has now been uploaded online on Samsung’s website. The manual doesn’t reveal a whole lot, but it does confirm the J2 Pro (2018) will look similar to the mainstream Galaxy J (2017) handsets while sporting a plastic body and, hence, a removable back cover and battery. Not that some leaked renders hadn’t already cleared that up for us, but official confirmation is always welcome.

The manual also shows the J2 Pro (2018) will come with the new Samsung Experience UX, and since it’s running Android 7.1.1, we can expect to see the latest version of Samsung Experience as seen on the Galaxy Note 8. What the manual doesn’t confirm is what the phone will be called. Galaxy J2 Pro (2018) is what everyone is expecting, and it was even dubbed the Galaxy J2 Pro (2017) for a while, but we believe it may just be called Galaxy J2 (2018) when it goes on sale.

Latest Samsung software, but not much else

As far as specs are concerned, the new J2 will be a decidedly budget affair, with a quad-core Snapdragon 430 SoC (and an Exynos equivalent in some markets) and 1.5GB of RAM (as well as dual SIM slots). It’s set to launch in a handful of countries, although retail availability will only be confirmed for different markets when the phone goes official. With the phone’s manual available online, it doesn’t look like it will take too long for that to happen.

Android 8.0 Oreo update for US unlocked Galaxy Note 8 has leaked online

Well, it seems while Samsung is only doing betas for Android 8.0 Oreo on the Galaxy S8, it also has a couple of Oreo test builds for the Galaxy Note 8, at least for the unlocked Snapdragon-powered Note 8 in the US. Someone has managed to grab an Android 8.0 OTA for Samsung’s latest Note flagship and has posted links for it to Reddit for all to see and try out. As expected, it’s not a stable or final build, but it seems to be working well enough as a trial firmware.

The leaked OTA requires the device to be on firmware version N950USQS2BQK2, which is the latest official build and only available for unlocked Note 8 units on Verizon at this point. However, to get around that limitation, any unlocked Note 8 owner can get the N950USQS2BQK2 firmware on their device by following the upgrade path suggested by the Reddit user. Also, this is only for the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy Note 8 in the US, if that wasn’t clear already.

Try the leaked Galaxy Note 8 Oreo build at your own risk

Naturally, we don’t support flashing unofficial software unless it comes directly from Samsung as part of a beta test program, so you’re on your own and would require some knowledge of flashing firmware (both via a PC and through the phone’s recovery mode) if you decide to try this out. What we can suggest is looking at a few step-by-step guides that seem to be making the rounds online with directions for installing the leaked Oreo build.

We would also suggest making a proper backup of your Note 8 via Samsung Smart Switch (or any of your favorite backup apps) before trying the test Oreo firmware, as you may have to wipe all your phone’s data (including images and other files on the internal storage). And, if you do install it, let us know how it works! To see what features Oreo is bringing to the Galaxy S8, check out our exhaustive What’s New With Android 8.0 Oreo series, which should apply to the Note 8 as well.

Does this image confirm a few Galaxy S9 rumors? Maybe, maybe not

A Weibo user has posted a screenshot purportedly taken on a Galaxy S9 prototype that may or may not confirm rumors swirling around Samsung’s upcoming flagship. Taken from Samsung’s S Health app, the screenshot shows a demonstration on using the heart rate sensor, and if you look closely, the fingerprint sensor seems to be placed below the camera. Also worth noting here is that only a single rear camera can be seen. If you’ve been following Galaxy S9 rumors recently, you will likely be wondering whether this image is giving us some solid information to back them up.

Well, that’s what we’re wondering, too. While images inside Samsung’s apps are often placeholders that are replaced later, why would the company show a device that doesn’t exist (not with that design) in a placeholder if it wasn’t secretly in the works? It certainly doesn’t seem to be a Galaxy A (2018) phone, which isn’t likely to sport a heart rate sensor if all the leaks and rumors are to be believed. And it’s rather hard to imagine the placeholder in the screenshot is from a time when Samsung may have tried to put the Galaxy S8’s fingerprint sensor below the camera module and failed, as it would have been replaced a long time ago.

Here’s the leaked image from Weibo:

And here’s how it compares to the one seen in S Health on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 (from left to right):

Now, unless the source is trying to fool everyone with an old image, it leaves us with an interesting possibility. The phone seen in the screenshot could actually be the smaller of the Galaxy S9 flagships, which is said to have only a single rear camera. Heck, maybe even the Galaxy S9+ will miss out on a dual camera setup, but that would be impossible unless Samsung wants to lose potential consumers. Dual cameras are almost a must-have for smartphones these days, and at least the S9+ has to have one (among other things) to do well in the post-iPhone X world.

To trust or not to trust…

While we’re closer to the Galaxy S9’s official launch now than we were three weeks ago when we first heard of the 5.8-inch S9 possibly being limited to a single rear camera, it’s still tough to trust these leaks. The Weibo forums have often been the source of valuable information on upcoming devices, and even though that image looks legit, it remains to be seen if it really is telling us what we can expect from the Galaxy S9.

What do you think?

Tip: How to view full-screen YouTube videos on the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8

When Samsung introduced the tall and narrow Infinity display on the Galaxy S8, the YouTube app had a dedicated button to make videos fit the entire width of the screen and remove the black bars on the sides. That button disappeared with an update to the app, leaving S8 and Note 8 owners unable to fully utilize their phone’s display for viewing videos. Or did it? As it turned out, the button was only replaced with a different way of doing things for all phones with tall, nearly bezel-free displays.

Pinch-to-zoom is the answer

Now, to make videos fill the entire screen, you can use pinch-to-zoom gestures when a video is playing in landscape orientation, just like you would when trying to zoom in or out on photos in the gallery. To make a video fill the screen, zoom in, which is to say place two fingers on the screen and move them away from each other. To zoom back out, do the opposite, and viola.

Sadly, zooming in on videos still means that part of the top and bottom get cut, since most videos are made for the 16:9 aspect ratio rather than the 18:9/18:5:9 aspect ratios seen on these phones, which is unlikely to change anytime soon. But for videos where that doesn’t bother you, pinch and zoom is how you enjoy truly full-screen videos on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

Some of you were no doubt aware of this functionality already, but those who weren’t are now in the loop as well. Go try it out, and for more such tips, check out our dedicated tips and tricks section!

Samsung India kicks off major Christmas sale on its online store

A couple of weeks ahead of Christmas, Samsung India has kicked off a seven-day sale to celebrate the holidays. Starting today and going on until December 15, the sale includes phones across all price ranges, Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and a couple of TVs. Rather than just price cuts, Samsung is offering deals such as major cashbacks from wallets like Paytm, interest-free installment plans from Bajaj Finserv, and up to 40 percent exchange value for those upgrading to a new Galaxy device.

Samsung India Christmas sale has something for everyone

For the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8, consumers can get Rs. 8,000 cashback from Paytm. For budget phones like the Galaxy J3 Pro and Galaxy On series devices, there are minor discounts on the retail prices but with a 10 percent additional discount if the product is purchased using the Mobikwik wallet service. Some products also come with the option to start paying 15 days after the purchase and free insurance against accidental and liquid damage. For accessories like Bluetooth speakers, there only seem to be slight price drops; the same goes for a leather band that Samsung is giving off with the Gear S3 for less than half its official price (the watch itself has not been discounted).

Samsung India’s Christmas sale has too much to list here, so go ahead and visit the source link to check out the company’s online store and see what products take your fancy.

Rumor: Galaxy S9 has the same 18:5:9 display aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8

The Galaxy S9 is rumored to sport a never-before-seen screen-to-body ratio, but when it comes to the display itself, a new rumor says we will see the same 18:5:9 aspect ratio as we saw on the Galaxy S8. There have been some rumors of Samsung upgrading to a 21:9 aspect ratio, but GalaxyClub has received information saying it’s not going to change. It wouldn’t be surprising, really, but if the screen-to-body ratio is as high as 90 percent, it could mean the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be even more compact than their predecessors, which would be an impressive achievement.

Galaxy S9’s 18:5:9 Infinity display will help Samsung maintain uniformity

Sticking to the same aspect ratio will also help Samsung maintain uniformity across its device range, with the new Galaxy A series phones also set to launch with 18:5:9 Infinity displays. That’s on top of sticking to the same 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch panels as the Galaxy S8 and S8+, which are pretty much the most well thought out screen sizes for the tall “all-screen” smartphone designs of today. However, if the screen size does remain the same while the screen-to-body ratio goes down, it would mean one particular rumor about the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 losing out on a dual rear camera could turn out to be true, which would bring Samsung closer to its arch-rival when it comes to cutting down on features for the smaller flagship.

But, as with all such rumors, there is still a chance that things could change (or be different from what the leaks and rumors say) in the months leading up the official launch of the Galaxy S9. That goes for everything, from the colors options for the phones to the screen-to-body ratio, so none of the information making the rounds online should be taken at face value just yet.
