Samsung wants to speed up app development on Tizen

Apps are essential to a mobile platform’s survival now, one of the reasons why BlackBerry and Windows Phone have had such a hard time is because they just don’t have the kind of apps that people can get on iOS and Android. For Tizen to succeed Samsung needs to have a robust app ecosystem and the company is certainly working hard to ensure that there are more than enough apps available for the nascent platform.

Samsung has reportedly been in touch with Tizen developers to explain just how important it is to create an environment for developing Tizen apps, the company is providing them with a software development kit and detailing various methods for the development of Tizen apps. Samsung’s presence at IFA 2015 is also expected to serve an opportunity for the company to accelerate these efforts by prominently featuring Tizen OS. These efforts won’t go to waste, even though the Tizen Store is available in 182 countries it only has over 1,000 registered apps which is nowhere near the millions of apps available on other platforms, not good enough if you want to steal users from iOS and Android.

Samsung and Apple now account for 64% of the U.S. smartphone market

Kantar Worldpanel, an analytics firm, has just published the latest data regarding the technology market share, and it appears that Samsung and Apple are dominating the U.S. smartphone market with a notable majority.

The two tech companies, Samsung and Apple, make up for 64 percent of the smartphone market share in the U.S., and it doesn’t look like they’ll lose any ground anytime soon. These two vendors also have nine out of the ten best-selling devices in the three months ending July 2015, and LG is included in that list surprisingly. According to Kantar, the next quarter will be very interesting as Apple is set to launch its new iPhones and Samsung is also rolling out some new devices.

When it comes to OS market share, things aren’t so good for Android. The operating system has seen a 1.7 percent growth in the U.S. and 9 percent of existing smartphone owners migrated to iOS. It will probably catch on once Google launches its Android Marshmallow OS, but right now it seems a lot of people are considering the iPhone as a viable alternative to their current smartphone.

Samsung is reportedly working with Xiaomi, others on a $470 laptop

It looks like Samsung might be collaborating with Xiaomi and other brands on a laptop that is supposed to be released next year. This is pretty surprising considering the fact that Samsung is competing with Xiaomi for the top spot in the Asian smartphone market.

Xiaomi has some big plans for this laptop, and according to Bloomberg, Samsung will supply memory chips and display panels to Xiaomi for this laptop. A separate report from DigiTimes states that laptop will run Linux out of the box, feature a 15-inch display, and will have a price tag that revolves around the $470 mark. However, reports from DigiTimes should be taken with a pinch of salt as they have a poor track record when it comes to accuracy,

This sort of laptop is meant to compete with Apple’s MacBook devices, and it’s a logical move from Xiaomi. Samsung produces some amazing components so we can see how this sort of laptop could take the cake in Asia, especially against Xiaomi’s rivals like Lenovo, which currently has a 20-25% market share in China’s notebook market.

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 5 in India on September 7

There has been a lot of concern among fans of the Galaxy Note series after Samsung stated that the Galaxy Note 5 will only be released in select markets, at least initially. We have already reported on the markets where the Galaxy Note 5 will be released, but it’s not like Samsung won’t add more countries to the list as it goes along. India is the latest to join the list, because Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy Note 5 at an event in New Delhi next week, September 7 to be precise.

We did see this coming as we reported exclusively on the Galaxy Note 5 firmware for India. It wouldn’t have made sense for the company to work on the firmware if it had no intentions of launching the device in this market. The Galaxy Note 5‘s pricing and availability related details aren’t available at this point of time, but we will keep you posted once the company reveals those details next week during its launch event.

The Galaxy Note 5 features a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 2560×1440 pixel resolution, underneath the display there’s an Exynos 7420 processor with 4GB RAM, a 16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as 32GB/64GB storage options. You can find out more about the device’s design and performance by going through our hands-on preview of the Galaxy Note 5.

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S6 edge+ in the country with a price tag of INR 57,900 and the company’s latest premium tablet, the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7, is available in India starting today.

Samsung has lost billions in market value this year, $12 billion just last month

When Samsung released the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge earlier this year many thought that the new devices will revitalize growth for the company’s high-end handsets but unfortunately Samsung wasn’t able to capitalize on the momentum. It got bogged down with supply and demand issues particularly for the Galaxy S6 edge so it missed that opportunity, the company decided to make amends by launching the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ earlier than planned and while there have been reports that the handsets have been performing well the jury is still out on whether or not the new handsets make any substantial improvements to Samsung’s fortunes.

Samsung has paid a heavy price for this missed opportunity, since April this year the company’s stock price has steadily been declining, shaving billions off the company’s market value. It now sits on top of a $44 billion market devaluation, losing $12 billion in just last month when its stock tumbled 8.1%. The company is undoubtedly feeling the pinch from the onslaught of Chinese OEMs that are putting pressure on its low-end and mid-range smartphone business while it struggles to compete against the iPhone at the high-end segment of the market. Samsung might have to live with this slump for some time now since those OEMs are not going to be slowing down and with new iPhones just around the corner it faces an even tougher battle in key markets across the globe, the company’s next batch of high-end devices isn’t due before the first quarter of 2016 so it’s not like it can rely upon a knight in shining armor.

Samsung’s SLEEPsense is an IoT-enabled sleep tracker

Ever since Samsung started working on the Internet of Things they’ve been coming up with some really good ideas for your home, all of which are interconnected. Now they’ve come up with a fitness tracker of sorts called SLEEPsense, which is a 1cm thick device that goes right under your mattress, allowing it to monitor your sleep movements and sleep pattern. The interesting thing about this new device is that it can activate other devices using the Internet of Things, for instance if you are having trouble sleeping this device could turn on the air conditioner for ensuring an optimal sleeping temperature.

It can do a lot of other neat things as well like turning off the TV when you fall asleep for example. That’s the power of interconnected home devices and it’s something that Samsung has been working on intensively this year. SLEEPsense is packed full of features and it includes a heart rate and breathing rate monitor which is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Its most notable use would be for the elderly, allowing full tracking in a shelter for instance. This device is expected to be released later this year in South Korea.

Judge wants Apple and Samsung to get done with their second damages retrial quickly

This patent infringement lawsuit between Apple and Samsung has gone on for a couple of years now, Apple initially won a substantial damages award which was appealed by Samsung and reduced in subsequent proceedings. However the matter is far from over, Apple and Samsung are about to head to the second retrial in this damages case and the judge wants both companies to sort out the matter quickly.

Judge Lucy Koh is going to preside over the second Apple vs Samsung damages retrial, proceedings are set to start in either March or April 2016. Samsung’s request for a new hearing on the first patent trial has already been turned down and while the company has filed its case before the Supreme Court it can’t be said for sure right now if the apex court will take up the matter. The second retrial is going to focus on calculating the proper damages on the five Samsung devices that were originally found to have infringed on Apple’s patents, the products have since been discontinued and the initial damages award has been reduced from $1.05 billion to $548 million.

The judge doesn’t want this matter to drag on, the court is not going to allow both sides to bring new theories and only one week has been scheduled for the retrial which includes time for opening and closing statements. Apple has moved a request for a partial final judgement on the other hand Samsung has moved to stay the trial proceedings because of the recent invalidation of an Apple patent by the USPTO. In short: this is far from over.

Samsung will show off its transparent OLED display at IFA 2015

We know that Samsung has been working on transparent OLED displays for some time now and the company is ready to demonstrate its technology at the IFA 2015 consumer electronics show in Berlin this week. The company will show off its big-screen OLED transparent display at the event, the display is meant to be used for commercial displays in stores, it measures 55-inches and is not intended to be used for consumer TVs. Alongside this display the company will also show off a similar product that has a mirror back and has also been developed for retail use.

The company first showed off its transparent and mirror OLED panels earlier this year at the Retail Asia Expo 2015 in Hong Kong, they’re meant to be used for informational browsing and personalized shopping. This was a proof of concept from Samsung at that event to show that the technology can be put to use in commercial operations. Samsung might provide more information about this technology at IFA 2015, and if it’s ready to put it out in the market, we might also hear about the very first retail partners who adopt the transparent OLED displays.

FCC listing reveals alleged Samsung Z3 smartphone

A new device with a model number of SM-Z300H has just passed through FCC, and we suspect that it could be the Samsung Z3 due to the fact that the Z1′s model name was SM-Z130H. It seems a bit out of place since there was never a Samsung Z2 despite all those rumors. The SM-Z300H is passing the FCC certification indicates that we could see its official announcement soon, so we have something else to look out for in the upcoming months.

The Samsung Z1 really isn’t that impressive in terms of hardware specifications, but the Z3 could be a lot better. As we reported exclusively a couple of months back, Samsung Z3 will run Tizen 3.0 operating system, and feature a 5.0-inch 720p display with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, an 8MP primary shooter, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, and two SIM card slots, all of these powered by a 2,600 mAh battery.

What’s exciting about these devices is that they feature a newer version of Samsung’s Tizen operating system. The Z3 was supposed to be announced during the Tizen Developer Summit 2015, but Samsung handed over some early prototypes to developers.
