Galaxy Folder 2 flip phone stops by the FCC with 2,000mAh battery

Samsung is probably the only mainstream smartphone manufacturer that’s still making flip phones. We found out a month ago that the company is testing a new flip phone – the Galaxy Folder 2 – and that it’s going to have a 3.8-inch display. Alleged specifications of this handset were later spotted online and now it has stopped by the FCC, the filing documents reveal that this flip phone has a 2,000mAh battery.

The Galaxy Folder 2 (SM-G1600) is expected to have a 3.8-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution display, a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor with 2GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It may also have an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy Folder 2 is expected to run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow straight out of the box.  The FCC pit stop for this device suggests that it may not be long for the handset to break cover after certification is granted. The filing clearly indicates that it has a 2,000mAh battery which should prove enough for a smartphone of this calibre. Samsung has not yet confirmed when the Galaxy Folder 2 is going to be out and how much it’s going to cost but it’s likely that the handset will be launched in China first before it makes its way to South Korea.

Samsung launches a separate news site for fans in Vietnam

Vietnam is an important developing market for Samsung. The company has manufacturing facilities in the country and it often introduces low-end and mid-range offerings just for this particular market. To form a better connection with its fans in the country Samsung today announced the launch of a separate news website for Vietnam.

Samsung Newsroom Vietnam is a proper digital PR platform for consumers and the media. The aim is to use this medium to create a deeper understanding of Samsung and provide information about the company’s latest products and services in the local language, while also highlighting its business insights and citizenship activities. The Vietnam Newsroom is also going to feature content that’s going to showcase Samsung’s support for local employees and the local industry. This is the fourth Newsroom that Samsung has launched, following Global, Korea, and the United States. The company plans on localizing this PR platform in more markets throughout this year. Samsung Newsroom Vietnam’s URL is news.samsung.com/vn.

Samsung will suspend another LCD plant this year

News reports out of Korea suggest that Samsung has decided to suspend operations in another LCD plant and that it’s replacing the production line with that for LED panels. Apparently, Samsung Display is going to cease LCD production at its facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, by the end of this year. It’s reportedly going to sell the LCD production equipment to a third party.

Samsung has made a strategic shift towards OLED over the past few years so it’s gradually shutting down LCD production lines and replacing them with OLED lines. It was operating eight LCD plants in Korea until 2008 and up till now, it has closed five of those plants. This particular plant – Asan “L7″ – came online in 2005 and it had a monthly capacity of 320,000 seventh-generation LCD panels that were primarily used for 40-inch TVs. Demand for these panels has been slowing recently due to cheaper panels coming out of China so Samsung has decided to shut it down and replace it with an OLED production line to improve yields ahead of the much-rumored Apple contract for the next iPhone’s OLED displays.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 cases spotted online, point towards a curved display

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2, 2016, but a lot of information regarding the smartphone has been leaked already, including its possible specifications and color variants. Now, case maker Olixar has listed multiple Galaxy Note 7 cases online, revealing the physical design of the device.

These case listings reveal the Galaxy Note 7 in white color with a curved display and an S Pen slot in its regular position. The design of the device seems close to that of the Galaxy S7 edge. Samsung appears to have made up its mind to release only the curved screen variant of the Galaxy Note 7 and do away with the flat screen variant altogether. Other than that, these premium Olixar’s NovaShield cases for the Galaxy Note 7 would be available in Blue Leather, Carbon Fibre Gold, Fibre Black, and Red Leather trims.

The next Galaxy Note device is expected to feature a 5.7-inch or 5.8-inch QHD curved Super AMOLED display, an octa-core Exynos processor, 6GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, microSD card slot, TouchWiz Grace UX, an iris recognition system, IP68 certification, and USB Type-C port.

Exclusive: Samsung Z2 to feature My Money Transfer app for Indian users

Samsung has been testing the Tizen-based Z2 for quite a while. It was first reported to be in the works last year and was expected to be unveiled sometime in the second half of 2015, but it was delayed. The Samsung Z2 received Bluetooth certification two weeks ago, and it could be released in India early next month.

Now, we’ve now received information that the Samsung Z2 might launch with an all-new My Money Transfer app for Indian users. Using the app, users can transfer money to and from their bank accounts anytime anywhere. The app can also be used to check account balance and recent transactions. Moreover, it would work without an Internet connection. However, it would only work for accounts that have been enabled for Internet banking.

Users can add beneficiaries just like they can in their bank accounts to transfer money to others. The app would be compatible with most Indian banks, including big ones like Axis, ICICI, HDFC, SBI, and Yes Bank, as well as regional ones like Andhra Bank, Karnataka Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Vijaya Bank.

The Samsung Z2 is expected to feature a 4-inch display, LTE connectivity, S Bike Mode, and a more responsive version of Voice Control. Not much is known about the processor and camera resolution of the device right now, but we’ll let you know as soon as we receive more information.

Samsung launches the Z3 Corporate Edition in Russia

Following a successful launch in India back in October 2015, Samsung has today launched its latest Tizen-powered smartphone, the Samsung Z3, in Russia. However, this time, the handset has been specifically marketed at enterprise customers, and not the average consumer. This likely has something to do with the fact that this variant of the Z3 is the first device running Tizen to be SAFE certified for business use in Russia.

There are a number of subtle differences between the Z3 that was released in the Indian market last year and the one that hit the shelves in Russia today with the most notable being the introduction of a Qualcomm MSM8916 CPU, which is considerably more powerful than the Spectrum chip found in its counterpart. The other major difference is that Corporate Edition supports 4G LTE, while the original model only ships with compatibility for 3G.

Strangely, the handset isn’t available to purchase from Samsung’s website. Instead, those interested in picking one up will have to head over to the Linux Center store, which is an official Samsung Partner. Once there, they will have the facility buy one for RUB 16,618 ($260). It’s worth noting, however, that those who hand over their cash before June 30 will be eligible for a 15% discount, dropping the price down to RUB 14,126 ($220).

Exclusive: Samsung’s new Smart Glow feature detailed

Recently, Samsung’s new Smart Glow feature surfaced, bringing a fresh way of providing notifications to upcoming devices like the Galaxy J2 (2016). Now, we can reveal Smart Glow is actually much more than just a notification light alternative, though we will only see its full potential unfold in the future.

At first, in the yet-to-be-launched Galaxy J2 (2016), the glowing ring around the rear camera lens will have roughly three functions. Smart Glow can provide Priority alerts, Usage alerts and what Samsung calls Selfie assist. The first, Priority alerts, seems to be comparable to Edge lighting on the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S7 edge. Colors can be assigned to contacts, so one glance suffices to know whose call, message or email was just received.

Usage alerts pertain to the functioning of the phone itself. The Smart Glow ring will light up in different colors, indicating battery status and providing charging alerts. Last but not least, Selfie assist helps taking pictures of oneself using the rear camera. The Smart Glow ring will light up in blue when the face is detected, after which the picture is taken within two seconds.

These are the basic functions of Smart Glow that will be found on the new Galaxy J2 (2016) when it launches. However, we have been told that further down the line, functionality will be expanded. For example, Usage alerts will provide notifications for storage, memory and data usage. Selfie assist will be able to provide directions by have particular parts of the Smart Glow ring light up, thus helping to center the user’s face in the picture before taking the shot.

samsung-smart-glow-image

Smart Glow as shown in the leaked user manual of the Galaxy J2 (2016)

Furthermore, there is ongoing development of features named Weather ring and Health ring. Weather ring provides weather information through Smart Glow. After shaking the phone, the ring will glow in a color that represents current weather conditions. Sunny weather will be, for example, represented by a yellow glow, while rain results in a blue hue.

More interesting, as far as we are concerned, is Health ring. In future Galaxy devices, the rear camera itself will be used to monitor heart rate, in combination with the phone’s LED flash. Functionality will be integrated with the Smart Glow software, although it is unclear to us what role the ring itself will play here.

Initially, Smart Glow will launch on the Galaxy J2 (2016) in India with only the above mentioned basic features, but Samsung expects it to become an important mode of interaction. And from what we understand, Smart Glow will come to other devices as well, with the Galaxy S8 a likely candidate for the extended Weather ring and Health ring features, doing away with the additional (and according to some, ugly) heart rate sensor. Finally, with Samsung India responsible for development, we would not be surprised to see Smart Glow end up in future Tizen phones, like the Z2.

Eldar Murtazin says Galaxy Note 7 will have a 3,600 mAh battery, reiterates leaks specs

With a little over a month remaining before the Galaxy Note 7′s alleged official reveal, the rumor mill is expected to shift into higher gear with each passing day. Many of the Note 7′s specs have been revealed by various sources in recent weeks, and another source – one that has both been right and wrong about upcoming Samsung devices – has published a slew of details on Samsung’s next flagship.

Eldar Murtazin has written a pretty big “preview” of the Note 7 with information on various aspects. Murtazin’s sources confirm most of the specs that have been leaked until now, except for the battery. Apparently, the Note 7 will have a 3,600 mAh battery like the S7 edge instead of a 4,000 mAh unit as rumored. Google’s translation isn’t very clear, but it seems Samsung is depending on increased device optimization to offer dependable battery life. The company is also sticking to a Quad HD display because higher-resolution panels aren’t as power-friendly, although Murtazin says the screen will be increasing in size to 5.8 inches, at least on the Edge variant.

Other specs reiterated by the Russian blogger include the same cameras as the Galaxy S7′s (with improved software processing), IP68 water resistance, 6GB of RAM, Exynos 8893/Snapdragon 821 (higher-clocked versions of the chips inside the Galaxy S7), an iris scanner, and the updated TouchWiz interface that we saw in a leaked video. Pricing is pegged to be somewhere between $750 to $800 in the US and Euro 800 in Europe, with availability reportedly beginning in the latter half of August (which matches what Samsung did with the Galaxy Note 5 last year).

While it’s always best to grab the proverbial salt container when it comes to these leaks, at this point of time we can expect most of the rumors to be accurate. It won’t be long before we find out what’s real and what won’t come to pass, although the Galaxy Note 7 is looking to be one hell of a device that will build on the near-perfect Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung has mastered the multi-cell handover process for its 5G network

Samsung has been hard at work developing the technology required to operate a 5G network for a little over two years now. We first caught wind of the project when the manufacturer revealed that it managed to clock a transmission speed of 7.5Gbps (940 MB per second) using a 28GHz 5G cellular connection. Shortly after it achieved this milestone, the firm announced that it had partnered with Korean telecommunications giant LG U+ to aid the creation of standards for the next major frontier in mobile telecommunication. This partnership led to the development of the world’s first end-to-end 5G solution that we saw showcased at MWC back in February. Unfortunately, just after this, news on the subject went a little quiet.

However, following Samsung’s declaration to be a global top-three player in the 5G industry, the company has today divulged that it recently hit another significant achievement in the development of its 5G network: multi-cell handover. As opposed to blanketing an entire area with an individual radio signal, as current telecommunications do, Samsung has created an adaptive beamforming technology that’s targeted at each user’s device. These beams are handed over to different transmitters as the user passes from area-to-area. Unfortunately, the need to precisely manage beamforming during handover added additional complexity to the transition process, but it was a challenge that Samsung has now been able to overcome, as can be seen in the video below, where a vehicle traveling at 25kph was able to move between three transmitters, maintaining a gigabit data transmission.

Don’t be thinking that a 5G launch is right around the corner, though, as it will take a good few years before 5G becomes mainstream and affordable. Major carriers in the United States are hoping to launch their 5G services by late 2017 or early 2018. However, pricing will be at an all-time high in order to cover the extortionate cost of development.
