1-14-2016 Firmware Updates: Galaxy E7, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Grand Neo, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

How to force restart the Galaxy S6 trio and Galaxy Note 5

At some point in your smartphone’s life, it’s bound to break into a freeze, callously rendering it useless until a reboot takes place. Yet, if the processor won’t push through any data, it can be pretty difficult to switch the device off without having to remove the battery. That said, if your handset features a non-removable battery and is running a build of Android higher than KitKat, you’re left with no other option other than to wait for the juice to run out, which frustratingly could take a while

Samsung has, however, come up with an alternative by integrating a nifty hardware force-restart feature on the Galaxy S6 trio and Galaxy Note 5. The process is not dissimilar to the standard Android force-restart facility, but the operation requires the inclusion of an extra button when doing it on a Samsung device. All you have to do is press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons consecutively for just seven-seconds, then your handset should turn off for a few seconds and power up again.

There’s not much else to say about the force-restart function, other than to advise you not to overuse this feature as it’s not particularly good for the CPU owing to the fact that rebooting puts a lot of strain on it during the course of recovering any data that was corrupted when the unit shut down.

From the Galaxy Note 3 to the Galaxy Note 5: Five Good Changes

The Galaxy Note 5 is now available, even in the coveted Gold Platinum color option, so it’s likely that fellow Note 3 users are contemplating an upgrade from their now two-year-old smartphone. We’ve heard a lot about what Note 4 users think about the Note 5, but we haven’t heard as much from Note 3 users who are more than happy to jump to Samsung’s latest. I am one of those individuals who finally upgraded from a Galaxy Note 3 to the new Galaxy Note 5 two months ago. I was more than ready to upgrade my Note 3, and I am more than pleased with the new Galaxy Note 5. Samsung has made some excellent changes that are designed to give you the best mobile experience money can buy.

To that end, I want to detail five good changes to expect for former Note 3 users who are now picking up Samsung’s latest and greatest. Whether or not you want these new surprises is, as always, up to you, but you can’t say Samsung hasn’t made some major changes worth upgrading for.

The plastic has gone, the glass and aluminum have come

The Galaxy Note 3 features a plastic leather or “pleather” back cover that has a nice feel to it. I was completely satisfied with the feel of the back cover of the Galaxy Note 3. In its place in the Galaxy Note 5 is a Gorilla Glass 4 panel on the back with an aluminum frame that binds the back glass cover to another Gorilla Glass 4 panel on the front. It’s bold, risky, and vulnerable, but it’s also sexy.

As with 99% of smartphones on the market, you’ll likely want a smartphone case and screen protector to preserve your investment – whether the smartphone has glass panels, plastic panels, or neither. So, don’t worry about drops and impact once you get a case and screen protector on it. Some may want to showcase their phones without a protective case, but cases can also be useful for increased battery life. With that said, don’t assume using a case for the Galaxy Note 5 is a bad thing. It just may help improve some areas of the experience about which you or those you know have been critical.

Home Button Brings Security

E.T. always phoned home in the sci-fi movie from my childhood days, but the home button is appropriately named in the smartphone experience: whenever you get stuck out in the large world of mobile web browsers, apps, and webpages, you can always find your way home.

In the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung has taken the home button of the Galaxy Note 3 (designed for getting “home” if you get lost) and embedded a fingerprint sensor into the same button. Note 4 users have already experienced the difference, but Note 3 users have not – which makes the Galaxy Note 5 the first experience with Samsung’s biometric security for many consumers. I’ve been testing out the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy Note 5 for the last several days, and it is truly reliable. I’ve found myself using it more than I’ve ever used any fingerprint sensor. Yes, you still have to ensure that your thumb or finger goes over the entire home button to have a near effortless experience, but it is more than sufficient to engage Note 3 users. Many Note 3 users will experience fingerprint sensors for the first time with the Galaxy Note 5 – which means that the Note 5 will set the standard for your expectations of fingerprint sensors in the future. Samsung hasn’t disappointed in this regard.

Removing the S Pen Gets Easier

Remember the claw approach with getting the S Pen of the Galaxy Note 3 out of its slot? Well, the Galaxy Note 5 solves that problem with a push-to-eject button at the top of the S Pen (the top of the S Pen goes to the bottom of the slot, for those who may fall victim to Pengate). You can now push the “clicky” top of the S Pen when you want to remove it, and push the same top portion back in when you want to return it.

Go ahead and click the push button on the S Pen. We can’t blame you if it becomes your new addiction.

Cameras

Samsung’s cameras in its high-end smartphones have never disappointed, and the same is true for this year’s Galaxy Note 5. If you’ve held on to a Galaxy Note 3 for the last two years, prepare to get a kick out of your smartphone cameras in the Note 5.

The Note 5 holds its own in every scene of every photo you’ll ever take. Fast-tracking autofocus keeps subjects in the scene no matter what they’re doing. Yes, it’s faster than anything you experienced with your cameras in the Note 3 – and it’ll make you wonder why you didn’t upgrade sooner. The up-close, 5MP selfie photos and 16MP back photos will be “just what the photographer ordered.”

The display has a new trick

What have you been able to do when your Note display was turned off? Not much, to be honest. With the Galaxy Note 5, however, your display will literally perform a trick right in front of your eyes. You can take your S Pen and jot down notes while the screen is off, thanks to Samsung’s all-new Off Screen Memo feature.

Now, your friends may be able to do some impressive things with their smartphones, but can they do that? Nope – and, should you want to hold on to your Note 3 a little longer or even go for a Note 4, the new Off Screen Memo will make you toss out the old for good.

Conclusion

These are five good changes in the Galaxy Note 5 that you have yet to experience if you’re a Note 3 customer. Now’s the time to make that upgrade, embrace the new, and toss out the old. Again, this was written to show Galaxy Note 3 users what they can expect to see in the new Note 5, though our Note 4 users may not celebrate the new smartphone as much.

It’s been said that “three time’s a charm,” but I have an idea that this fifth time (Galaxy Note 5) is even more charming than the “third” (Galaxy Note 3). Write in and let us know what color and storage model of the Note 5 you purchased, and whether or not you picked up additional Samsung accessories (fast wireless charging pad, keyboard cover, adaptive fast charging chargers, etc.) as well.

Samsung releases its own Wi-Fi Transfer app on the Play Store

There are many apps available for Android that allow you to transfer files between devices using a Wi-Fi network, but Samsung has felt the need to release one of its own, which is why it has released an app aptly called Wi-Fi Transfer on the Google Play Store. As the name suggests the app will let you transfer files from a smartphone to a computer over a Wi-Fi network.

You don’t need an internet connection for this app to work, instead it users a Wi-Fi network to transfer files between devices, so it can really be useful if you want to transfer files on the go. Since this is a Samsung app it’s only going to work with the company’s Android handsets, but alternatives are plenty if you don’t have a Samsung smartphone. Samsung Wi-Fi Transfer is available for free from the Google Play Store.

Samsung could launch the Z3 in several European countries early this year

Last year we exclusively reported that with its upcoming Tizen-powered smartphone Samsung is going to bring its homegrown mobile OS to Europe. The Samsung Z3 has already been released in multiple emerging markets and now it’s expected that this handset will arrive in several European countries early this year.

According to a new report, Samsung is going to first release the Z3 for consumers in Russia, the handset has already been available to business-to-business and government customers as it has received security certification from the Russian government. Samsung is also expected to release the Z3 in as many as ten European countries in the first quarter of 2016, including but not limited to the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Ukraine and Poland among others. It will be interesting to see how this low-cost smartphone performs in these major markets that are dominated by Android and iOS, the app gap on this platform remains to be a major issue, and will likely be considered by customers before they decide to spend their money on the Z3 from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A9 (2016) preview

Not so long ago, Samsung’s flagship smartphones were the only devices you could get if you wanted a great experience, and the lower tier devices had many limitations that made them hard to recommend. But the Galaxy A series was the company’s first attempt to offer a premium experience in the mid-range category, and the 2016 iteration of the Galaxy A takes things up a couple of notches by introducing rather high-end specs and the same metal and glass design as Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagships.

We have all four devices – the Galaxy A3 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2016), Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A9 (2016) – in our possession; we will be reviewing all four phones in the near future, but while we’re working on the reviews, here is a quick preview of the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 (2016), which we managed to get our hands on in a trip to China. A preview of the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 is incoming too, so stay tuned for that as well!

The Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 are large, with the latter the biggest yet in the series with a 6-inch display. These phones have the same glass and metal build as the Galaxy S6 lineup and the Galaxy Note 5, and for most intents and purposes, look and feel the same as the S6 lineup. That is to say the design is pretty much perfect – it feels extremely premium, and while the glass makes the phones slippery, the overall design is something that gets high marks.

These devices have Super AMOLED displays, so the viewing experience is great. Software performance is great as well, and the software theme Samsung is using for the Chinese market is rather nice, especially thanks to the good-looking homescreen icons (the icons are flat and look immensely better than the tacky icons Samsung is using on other devices, including all of 2015′s flagships.)

Imaging is something neither the Galaxy A7 nor the Galaxy A9 score high points in. Both phones have 13-megapixel cameras with optical image stabilization and f/1.9 aperture, but the performance isn’t that nice based on preliminary testing. It reminds us of the Galaxy A8, which had good camera specs on paper but failed to take good pictures thanks to poor software processing. Samsung is probably limiting camera performance on these devices to make their flagship cameras stand out, or just not doing enough optimization to keep costs down.

The new Galaxy A devices are heavy as well, but we don’t mind that at all thanks to the large batteries Samsung has managed to fit in. We haven’t tested the Galaxy A7 or Galaxy A9 2016 enough to give conclusive battery life numbers, but the 3,300 and 4,000 mAh batteries should be able to last an entire day for most users.

The 2016 Galaxy A lineup was made available in China first, and considering the market’s affinity for large-screen smartphones, the Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A9 (2016) could do well in the country, and in other markets as well. The Galaxy A8 took our recommendation for the best mid-range smartphone from Samsung, and from what we have seen on the new A7 and A8 so far, the A8 might not be able to keep that crown for much longer.

Stay tuned for our full review in the coming weeks (and a preview of the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 (2016) as well), and do let us know what you think of the Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A9 (2016) down in the comments!

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge Plus get KNOX certification nod from China and France

Samsung’s KNOX security software is gaining adoption with users worldwide, and figures from just two months ago show that 4 million users have now adopted KNOX as their mobile security software for the workplace. While KNOX has been adopted by enterprise professionals, a great achievement in and of itself, it’s in the area of government embrace that Samsung’s KNOX will either rise or fall – and it seems as though everything’s coming up roses for the Korean giant.

After seeing the UK approval over KNOX for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, as well as the approval of the US Department of Defense, Finland and Russia, Samsung can now celebrate the growth of KNOX – as two new governments join the fold.

The Korean giant announced today that both the French (ANSSI) and Chinese (ISCCC) government security agencies have given their nod of approval to Samsung’s enterprise software on the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5, meaning that Samsung’s latest devices can be used by government officials with an assurance that their data is encrypted and protected. The certification testing was conducted with Samsung’s KNOX Workspace 2.3.

Governments want the very best in data encryption and security, and Samsung’s KNOX enterprise software will provide relief for government agencies and officials who know the dangers of data breaches and the harm it can cause. Samsung’s government certifications of its KNOX software serve as a reminder to consumers that the best manufacturers also provide the best mobile protection.
