First Galaxy Note 8 firmware update improves camera performance

Samsung is going to officially release the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15. However, there have been many reports of pre-ordered units shipping to customers before the actual release date. Merely days before it’s scheduled to release the new flagship, Samsung has today rolled out the first Galaxy Note 8 firmware update.

Samsung is rolling out firmware version N950FXXU1AQI1 for the Galaxy Note 8 today. The changelog mentions that this update brings improvements for the camera software. It doesn’t go into any more detail than that so it’s unclear precisely which improvements have been made. The changelog also mentions that wireless charging performance has been optimized with this update.

The first Galaxy Note 8 firmware update brings the latest September security patch for the handset. Samsung detailed the contents of the September security patch just a few days back. It brings fixes for dozens of vulnerabilities in Android OS and Samsung’s own software.

Customers who are due to receive their Galaxy Note 8 units in the coming days should update their units as soon as they get them up and running. The Galaxy Note 8 is going to be released on September 15. It will also be available from retail and carrier stores in all launch markets starting this Friday.

iPhone X’s OLED display isn’t as bright as Galaxy S8’s Super AMOLED display

Apple unveiled its first iPhone with a bezel-less screen, the iPhone X, yesterday. It features a 5.8-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels. Samsung is currently the sole supplier of OLED panels for this new iPhone, and one would think that Apple would source nothing but the best OLED panels from Samsung, but it doesn’t look like so.

While Samsung’s latest OLED panels, which are used in the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8, can reach a peak brightness of up to 1,000 nits, the iPhone X’s peak screen brightness is limited to 625 nits. Unless Apple has limited the maximum brightness deliberately or stated incorrect numbers on its website, there’s a chance that Samsung isn’t offering Apple its best OLED panels.

Samsung’s new high-end phones support the HDR10 format for high dynamic range videos, but Apple’s new iPhone X supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. It remains to be seen how well the new iPhone’s “Super Retina Display” performs in comparison to the Galaxy S8’s or Galaxy Note 8’s Infinity Display in terms of color accuracy and brightness.

Follow these five tips to get the most out of your shiny new Galaxy Note 8

If you’ve just got your hands on a Galaxy Note 8, we’d recommend following these five simple tips, which include changing the screen resolution, configuring App Pair and rearranging the order of the on-screen buttons, to get the very most out of it.

Activate One-Handed Mode

Whatever way you slice it, the Galaxy Note 8 is a big device, something that may prove to be a problem for owners with small hands. Fortunately, the device ships with a neat One-Handed Mode that shrinks the screen when you swipe up from either bottom corner.

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Select Advanced Features.
  3. Tap One-Handed Mode.
  4. Read the disclaimer, then slide the toggle from Off to On.

Assign your handset a name

People often forget to assign their handset a suitable name, making it near-impossible to find when attempting to pair it with a Bluetooth device—like a portable speaker—in a crowded place, so we’d recommend giving it a unique moniker from the word go.

  1. Navigate into Settings.
  2. Press About Phone.
  3. Select Device Name.
  4. Enter a suitable name.
  5. Hit Done.

Change the screen resolution

Like the Galaxy S8, the default screen resolution on the Galaxy Note 8 is FHD+ (2,220 x 1,080), but with a little bit of tinkering it can be changed to WQHD+ (2,960 x 1,440). We should note, however, that increasing the resolution takes a mighty toll on battery life.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Display.
  3. Tap Screen Resolution.
  4. Choose WQHD+.
  5. Press Apply.

Configure App Pair

If you picked up a Galaxy Note 8, chances are you’re familiar with its nifty new App Pair feature—but if you aren’t, don’t panic. It’s a tweak that allows you to simultaneously launch two applications in Multi-Window mode from the Edge Panel.

Here’s how to activate it:

  1. Swipe in from the right-hand side of the display to open the Edge Panel.
  2. Under the Apps Edge subheading, which can be accessed by swiping left, press the + symbol.
  3. Hit Create App Pair.
  4. Select the two applications you’d like to pair. We’d recommend starting off with Maps and Play Music.
  5. Tap Done.

Reorder the on-screen buttons

As will likely be the case with all of Samsung’s future flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Note 8 sports a set of on-screen navigation keys, but instead of opting for the stock Android arrangement—Back, Home and Recents—the firm retained its traditional capacitive order.

If you’ve come from a non-Samsung flagship, chances are you aren’t a fan of the skewed Recents, Home and Back setup. That’s not going to be an issue, though, as you can actually change the order of the buttons in a few quick (and easy) steps.

  1. Dive into Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Press Navigation Bar.
  4. Select Button Layout.
  5. Choose Back-Home-Recents.

Galaxy A9 Pro Nougat update released in India

We reported a month ago that Samsung was testing the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy A9 Pro. This handset was spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance’s online database running Nougat. Prior to that, the handset was spotted with Nougat on GFXBench and Geekbench.

There was ample circumstantial evidence to support the possibility that Samsung might roll out the Galaxy A9 Pro Nougat update in the near future. It has done just that today. The Galaxy A9 Pro Nougat update has now been released in India.

Samsung launched the Galaxy A9 Pro in May last year. It features a 6-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 652 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage. It has a 16-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera, fingerprint reader, Samsung Pay and a 5,000mAh battery.

The handset was initially limited to the Chinese market before Samsung decided to release it in Malaysia and India a few months later. We had actually confirmed exclusively that this handset was going to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update.

Firmware version A910FXXU1BQHB is now being rolled out by Samsung for the Galaxy A9 Pro in India. Weighing in at just over 1.2GB, it brings all of the new features that are part and parcel of Nougat. It also brings a tweaked user interface that’s simpler and smoother than before.

Galaxy A9 Pro users in India should keep an eye out for the update notification. It should arrive on their handset in the very near future.

Thanks, Diku!

After Apple, Samsung will be the biggest beneficiary of the iPhone X

Apple unveiled its new flagship smartphone called the iPhone X yesterday. The company says that this device represents the “future of the smartphone.” While that can be debated, Samsung actually stands to gain a lot if the iPhone X ends up performing well in the market.

The iPhone X is Apple’s first smartphone with an OLED display. The company has branded it as “Super Retina” and while it made no mention of this during the keynote, it’s sourcing the OLED panel from Samsung.

Apple actually has no choice in the matter. Samsung is the only supplier that can produce high-quality OLED panels that fit Apple’s requirements. It has an 89 percent share in the OLED display market. Apple can only source OLED panels for its new flagship smartphone from its biggest rival.

A recent report claimed that Samsung charges anywhere from $120-$130 for an OLED display panel. It’s actually in a strong enough position to dictate pricing for the display. Apple is expected to sell millions of units of the iPhone X which means that Samsung’s display business will end up making a ton of money in the process.

Apple may have to stick with Samsung for a couple of years because there’s no other supplier that can meet its requirements at this point in time. Japan Display, which supplies more than half of the LCD panels for iPhones, may not be able to mass produce OLED displays until 2019.

Samsung Pay launch in France might take place soon

Samsung has expanded its mobile payments service to a handful of new countries this year. Samsung Pay was released in Sweden, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates earlier this year. It was also reported a few months back that Samsung Pay might be launched in France in September.

It was reported that Samsung Pay would be launched for users in France come September 2017. The company apparently wanted to launch the payments service in the country with a new smartphone. Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 8 in a couple of days so it would make sense for it to launch Samsung Pay in France now.

According to a new report out of France, the Samsung Pay app has arrived for compatible handsets in the country but it’s not yet functional. We’ve seen this happen in other markets as well where Samsung Pay is due to be launched soon.

Samsung and its bank partners will soon enable support for the service which will enable those who have a Samsung Pay-compatible device to start making payments on the go with the company’s mobile payments service.

The Galaxy Note 8 is due to be released on September 15. We can expect Samsung Pay to launch in France by then.
