Samsung announces industry’s first DRAM chips using 10nm EUV technology

Samsung is the global leader in memory and storage market for PCs and smartphones, and it often brings newer technologies ahead of other brands. The company has now announced that it has started mass producing and shipping the industry’s first DRAM modules based on 10nm EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) fabrication technology.

The new EUV-based DRAM modules have DDR4 speeds, and they have been shipped to Samsung’s customers worldwide for evaluation. The South Korean chip giant’s 10nm-class (D1x) DDR4 DRAM modules will be used not only in computers and smartphones but also in data centers and enterprise servers.

DRAM chips made using 10nm EUV process brings enhanced performance

Samsung is the first in the world to adopt EUV technology to manufacture DRAM chips as it allows for better scaling by reducing repetitive steps in multi-patterning and improving patterning accuracy when compared to the FinFET process. The new technology brings enhanced performance and shortened development time.

The company will fully deploy 10nm EUV technology for manufacturing all its future-generation DRAM chips. It will be used to make LPDDR4X RAM for smartphones and laptops, and DDR4 RAM for PCs. Samsung will also use the same technology to manufacture LPDDR5 and DDR5 RAM modules in the future.

Samsung expects to start the mass production of EUV-based 16Gb LPDDR5 and 16Gb DDR5 DRAM modules next year with 12-inch D1x wafers. The global memory chip leader will start volume-based mass production at its second semiconductor line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, in the second half of 2020.

Here are the Galaxy Z Flip’s cover display functions, detailed by Samsung

Despite its uniqueness, the Galaxy Z Flip’s design is relatively straightforward and doesn’t require a detailed explanation, at least for the most part. But the cover display is an unusual component. It’s something that’s never been seen on a Samsung smartphone before, at least not in this minimalist fashion, and it demands a closer look for it to be fully understood. To this end, Samsung has published a new video detailing the features of the Galaxy Z Flip cover display.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which ships with a more familiar 4.6-inch cover display that delivers a phone-like experience, the Galaxy Z Flip’s exterior panel measures only 1.1 inches. Its functionality is more limited, to say the least. You can’t type on it, open apps (except for Camera), or browse the web, but it does offer a few hidden functions to make the user experience of the Galaxy Z Flip owner a bit better.

The Galaxy Z Flip’s cover display offers the bare essentials

Double-tapping the Galaxy Z Flip’s cover display will wake it to reveal a minimalist status bar, complete with the time of day, date, and battery level. Swiping right will let you check your notifications, while swiping left gives access to music controls including play previous track, play/pause, and play next track. Swipe left when you receive a call and you can reject it. Last but not least, you can double-press the Side Key to open the Camera app and turn the cover display in a mini viewfinder for selfie shots. In this mode, the volume key acts as a shutter button.

Check out Samsung’s official video below, and if you want to learn more about the Galaxy Z Flip and our thoughts on the cover display, feel free to check our review.

Galaxy Z Flip Flex Mode explained by Samsung in new videos

Samsung has published a couple of videos explaining one of the Galaxy Z Flip’s unique features, namely Flex Mode. It’s something that sets the Galaxy Z Flip apart from any other Galaxy smartphone, and indeed, other handsets on the market, regardless of whether or not they’re Samsung-branded.

Flex Mode works hand-in-hand with the Galaxy Z Flip’s clamshell design. The smartphone’s intricate hinge mechanism allows users to unfold the screen at different angles, effectively turning the Galaxy Z Flip into a stand. It lets users capture steady hands-free selfies without requiring a tripod or similar solutions, and it’s a fantastic feature for capturing videos in Night Hyperlapse mode.

Galaxy Z Flip Flex Mode is what sets the device apart

The Galaxy Z Flip combines this hardware capability with software, i.e., Flex Mode, and essentially splits the foldable screen’s UI in half. When capturing photos or videos in Flex Mode, the upper half of the screen acts as a viewfinder, while the lower half accommodates all the controls. Similarly, Flex Mode lets you watch videos from the Gallery app on the upper half of the screen, and control the playback from the lower half.

Samsung had briefly demonstrated the power of Flex Mode on-stage at Unpacked, but its latest two videos offer an even closer look at this feature and what can be achieved thanks to the foldable design. Check them out below, and if they stir your interest, you can learn even more about the Galaxy Z Flip from our review.

Samsung Display staffers allowed into Vietnam amid coronavirus pandemic

Dozens of Samsung Display engineers will be allowed into Vietnam even as the country remains in a state of partial lockdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Following an agreement with the Vietnamese government, the company will fly 180 of its staffers to Bac Ninh on Saturday, The Korea Herald reports, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The special exemption was not agreed without unique precautions, as the engineers will ostensibly be quarantined close to Samsung Display’s North Vietnam factory. They’re expected to be flown over on a special chartered flight from Seoul.

Samsung Display allowed to bring its workers into Vietnam

The development is good news for Samsung whose global supply chain is heavily reliant on Vietnam. The quarantine precautions Hanoi set a month ago already prompted speculation about the tech giant’s ability to maintain everyday operations, particularly in regards to electronics output.

The entourage scheduled to arrive in Bac Ninh over the weekend will primarily be assigned to the chaebol’s OLED lines in the region. Those are understood to be absolutely crucial for a number of Samsung Electronics’ contemporary flagship lines, including the Galaxy Fold series.

While Samsung Display may count this as a win, it’s far from a major one seeing how the panel maker first wanted to send around 700 engineers to Vietnam earlier this month. Granted, that figure also included some subcontractors, but it remains to be seen whether Samsung manages to cut through any more of the coronavirus-related red tape in the coming weeks and get more of its personnel into the country.

Regular arrivals from South Korea are still being placed into a 14-day quarantine upon entering Vietnam. The measure that’s likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future also caused problems for Samsung’s domestic and global rival LG. However, LG Display and LG Innotek have now reportedly agreed to a similar exemption with the Vietnamese administration and will be sending some 250 staffers to the northeastern part of the country (Hai Phong) on Monday.

Samsung improves face mask manufacturing to help combat coronavirus

A global supply shortage of surgical masks is one of the many problems faced by the general population and businesses worldwide in the wake of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, and Samsung is doing its part to improve the situation. The company is lending its expertise to mask manufacturers in South Korea who can’t keep up with demand and has dispatched experts to assist three domestic mask manufacturers in speeding up the process.

Over the past three days, Samsung’s manufacturing experts have assisted E&W, Evergreen, and Lastek to improve on-site manufacturing processes and establish smart factories by setting up new equipment.

The company has also helped manufacturers speed up their production by creating a mold. It can take more than a month for this vital component to be imported from overseas, but Samsung was able to produce one in 7 days. The production output was increased from 40,000 masks per day to 100,000.

Samsung donates over a quarter-million masks

In addition to improving the manufacturing process of surgical masks in South Korea to combat coronavirus, Samsung has also donated roughly 280,000 masks in Canada, Colombia, China, and Hong Kong. 50,000 masks were donated to one of its semiconductor customers in China.

Over the past couple of weeks, the company took various measures to protect its employees from coronavirus and urged them to work from home whenever possible. It temporarily shut down countless Experience Stores in various markets to protect its workforce as well as its customers.

Samsung Vietnam donated 267,000 masks to its employees, including those who work at its smartphone manufacturing plant. Meanwhile, the company donated around 5,000 masks to schools located in the Thai Nguyen province.

Samsung Galaxy A31 unveiled and specs confirmed by way of infographic

Following months of rumors, leaks, and regulatory sightings, Samsung finally officially announced the Galaxy A31. The Android mid-ranger has been devised to pack decent bang for your buck and the company’s hoping to drive that point home with a new infographic featured below.

The promo focuses on the core specifications of the Galaxy A31 and places the quadruple camera on its back front and center. The solution is in line with what we’ve come to expect in this price range, pairing a general-purpose lens with a wide-angle one and backing it with two specialized modules for macro and bokeh-heavy portrait photography.

Samsung Galaxy A31 unveiled

As the Galaxy A31’s main sensor is a 48-megapixel affair, it’s fair to expect rather sharp images in decent lighting conditions at the expense of somewhat dubious low-light performance. Then again, even today’s best-in-class smartphones are hardly masters of nighttime photography.

Another major selling point of the Galaxy A31 is its 5,000mAh battery which has been rumored for a while now. The infographic doesn’t spell out the make and model of the SoC inside the Galaxy A31, though it provides enough details to indicate Samsung truly opted for a third-party chipset from MediaTek, as a recent benchmark sighting already suggested. That’s hardly surprising seeing how the Galaxy A41 launched last week is in a similar silicon boat.

With that said, the implementation of what’s likely the Helio P65 appears to be somewhat conservative here, with the company citing a 1.7GHz operating frequency for its hexa-core Cortex-A55 module, down from 2.0GHz that was in testing, according to the aforementioned benchmark listing.

The Galaxy A31 is expected to release in the coming weeks, though Samsung still hasn’t revealed any pricing or availability details. The device will retail in Prism Crush Black, White, Blue, and Red.

Samsung’s lightweight Galaxy Book S is available in the UK

Samsung is bringing the Galaxy Book S to more markets, and the UK is the latest addition to the list, after the USA and Germany. The company’s lightweight ARM-based laptop is now available in the UK for the price of £999, and customers can pick an Earthy Gold or Mercury Grey finish.

In the UK and other markets, the Galaxy Book S comes with 256GB of built-in memory, of which 196.8GB are available to the user. Should that not be enough, there is a microSD card slot capable of reading up to 1TB of external storage.

One of the biggest selling points of the Galaxy Book S is battery life. It can achieve up to 25 hours of video playback on a single charge, so even the most demanding users should have some juice left in the 42Wh pack at the end of the day.

Unlike the Galaxy Book Ion and Flex, both of which were developed in conjunction with Intel’s Project Athena program, the Galaxy Book S is an ARM-based laptop powered by the Snapdragon 8cx chipset. This is one of the reasons why battery life is stellar. The laptop runs Windows 10 Home OS, and the CPU is paired with 8GB of RAM, which should be enough if you manage your expectations. This is not a content creator’s pro-grade solution, but rather a lightweight media consumption powerhouse.

The laptop ships with a 13.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080, a 720p camera, a fingerprint sensor, a Nano-SIM card slot, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and VHT80 MIMO, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung temporarily shutting down factory in Brazil amid COVID-19 outbreak

Samsung announced earlier today that it would temporarily shut down one of its factories in Brazil to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The South Korean firm’s announcement comes amid the rapid spread of the pandemic in the Latin American region.

The company is closing its home appliance and smartphone manufacturing facility in Manaus in the northern part of Brazil until Sunday. Samsung said that it plans to support the Brazilian government’s effort to contain the novel virus. The company’s manufacturing plant in Campinas in the state of Sao Paulo will continue to function as usual. Its sales personnel have been ordered to work from home.

Brazil is not only the biggest economy in the region but also Samsung’s biggest market in Latin American. The South Korean company has been seeing growing demand for mid-range and high-end smartphones, as well as premium home appliances and QLED TVs in Brazil.

After Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong visited the company’s factories in Manaus in January, the company held a launch event for the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this month. The company fulfilled Galaxy S20 orders early in Brazil in the wake of the virus outbreak.

Samsung has also shut down its factories in India, Slovakia, and South Korea due to the virus. It also decided to close its stores in various parts of the world, including Canada, China, Malaysia, and the US. The ongoing pandemic has forced the company to revise its revenue expectations and find ways to protect its business.
