Galaxy S6 edge+ gets first software update, battery improvements in tow

The unlocked Galaxy Note 5 got its first software update last week, and Samsung is now rolling out the exact same update to the Galaxy S6 edge+. The Galaxy S6 edge+ shares all of its hardware with the Galaxy Note 5; it’s interesting to see Samsung finally maintaining consistency in software updates despite the two devices being from a different lineup, and despite the Note 5′s software not exactly being 100 percent similar to the S6 edge+ thanks to its stylus-related features.

The update brings improvements to battery usage and call stability, in addition to enhanced security. It’s a 138.14 MB update (with build number G928GDDU2AOJ5) that is available on our S6 edge+ in India, and it seems the same update has already rolled out for the European variant of the device in recent days, something that went under our radar. We will be keeping an eye on the battery life of the phone over the next few days to see if it actually improves; the S6 edge+ can last considerably long out of the box, and increased endurance would certainly be very welcome.

Have you received this update on your Galaxy S6 edge+? Let us know in the comments, and if you’ve been on the latest version of the OS for a few days, do tell us if you have noticed any changes in battery life.

AMD’s legendary CPU architect Jim Keller rumoured to join Samsung

Jim Keller, AMD’s legendary CPU architect, left the company last month. The company’s spokesperson stated that he had completed all his work, and his departure wouldn’t affect the company’s roadmap or future plans. Keller never revealed why he left AMD or where he will start working next. Now, it is being rumoured that Keller might join Samsung to develop the company’s next-generation mobile processors.

According to a post on Weibo, Keller will join Samsung’s R&D department in Austin Texas. It is being expected that he will play an important role in improving Samsung’s Exynos line-up of mobile processors. He played a major role in the development of AMD’s popular K7 and K8 processors, and the company was giving a tough competition to Intel then. He was also involved in the development of the first native 64-bit processor architecture for AMD. What’s even more interesting is that he joined Apple to work on A4 and A5 SoCs before returning to AMD in 2012.

We all know that Samsung has been focussing on its Exynos line-up of application processors, and it was the first to release mobile processors that were fabricated using industry-leading 14nm FinFET process. The South Korean electronics giant also manufactures RAM and NAND chips, and Keller would be an interesting addition to its R&D team. This is an interesting development, but just a rumour as of now, so you should take it with a pinch of salt and wait for some official information.

Eric Schmidt steps up cooperation with Korean firms such as Samsung

Alphabet’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt will be visiting South Korea on the 29th of October for a three-day visit in order to step up the company’s cooperation with South Korean giants, which includes Samsung and LG. This three-day visit will include a meeting with Samsung Electronics’ Vice Chairman Lee Jae-Yong at Samsung’s headquarters in Seocho. This is the first visit made after Google officially turned into Alphabet.

It seems that one of the hot topics that the two companies are discussing is the Internet of Things (IoT), driverless cars, and possibly, Nexus phones. Samsung continues to dominate the mobile device market and Google’s operating system dominates the global market with a staggering 82.8 percent market share in Q2, which is why the two tech companies are probably looking for a long-term cooperation.

The two companies established a cooperative partnership early last year which allowed Samsung to freely use Google’s Android-related patents. The South Korean electronics giant has also started using Tizen, an open source operating system that is lead by Samsung and Google, in its smartphones, wearables, and television sets.

More Samsung Galaxy View images and details leak

We posted some exclusive information about Samsung’s upcoming large-screen tablet last week along with its images and specifications. Now, some more images of this huge device have surfaced on the Internet. The Galaxy View is an Android-based tablet with an 18.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, and it will reportedly launch in the US with a price tag of $599. Apparently, Samsung will market it as a tablet that focuses on web browsingand media consumption. It will reportedly be available in black and white colors in the US, but there’s no information about the company’s launch plans for Europe.

As we reported multiple times, the tablet will be equipped with an Exynos 7580 processor with 64-bit octa-core CPU clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion. In terms of connectivity, it is expected to feature HSPA+ and LTE (Cat. 6) radios, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth v4.1. There’s no rear-facing camera on the Android 5.1 Lollipop-based tablet, but there will be a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, and high-quality stereo speakers on the front for a pleasing media experience.

There will be a 6,700 mAh battery that will help the tablet last upto 8.5 hours of video playback. It can double up as a mini TV that is “reinvented for the streaming-age” and provides a “PC-like user experience”. The Galaxy View also has a media interface that shows media recommendations on the lockscreen. Also, there’s no physical home button on the tablet, which means that it will use on-screen navigation keys. Also, as you can see in the images, it has a housing at its back that integrates a large handle and a stand to help users carry it around and place it on a surface for hands-free usage.
